Genelec 8240A Monitors and 7270A Subwoofer Make the Music at the New Jazz Space at New Orleans’ Former U.S. Mint Sound Like a Million Bucks

— Jazz Theater performance venue on the top floor of a historic building in America’s Capital City of Jazz includes a recording studio that uses Genelec DSP monitoring —

NATICK, MA, August 7, 2012 — The Jazz Theater on the top floor of the Old U.S. Mint Building in New Orleans is designed around the music itself: the small (120-seat) rectangular room is intimate and acoustically pristine, fitted with complex movable panels that provide both diffusion and absorption while offering variable acoustics as they slide into place as needed for different types of jazz artists. As part of the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, the Jazz Theater is part of a larger museum that incorporates the State Museum’s already substantial collection of jazz artifacts, a collection that includes sheet music, manuscripts, photographs, records (including what is thought to be the first jazz recording, from 1917) and instruments such as Louis Armstrong’s first cornet.

The theater is a modular 4,000-square-foot performance space with a stage that can be configured multiple ways to accommodate any type of jazz genre. The venue has hosted several great performances since it opened in late 2011, and it’s recorded many of them via its state-of-the-art recording studio at the rear of the space, where reference speakers from Genelec, the world’s longstanding pioneer in active monitoring, serve as the monitor of choice. A pair of Genelec 8240A Bi-Amplified DSP Monitors, featuring Genelec Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™) and the rounded edges and gently curved front and sides of the Minimum Diffraction Enclosure™ (MDE™), provide uncolored and utterly accurate imaging. A Genelec 7270A Active DSP Subwoofer provides additional low end, creating the ultimate stereo-and-sub monitoring system for music as nuanced as jazz.

“The Genelecs work amazingly well in this studio – their imaging and accuracy are the best,” says Sam Brandt, AV Designer on the project and a Senior Consultant with Akustiks, the South Norwalk, Connecticut firm that designed the Jazz Theater’s acoustics and AV systems. Brandt says the Genelec monitors are connected using their onboard AES digital inputs in combination with a digital-thru connection. “The ease of their setup and the way they sound are equally remarkable,” says Brandt. “They are impressive.”

Sennheiser Delivers End-to-End Audio Solution at Newport Folk Festival®, As Fans Experience Authentic Sound via Wireless Headphone Technology

Newport, RI – August 9, 2012 - The last weekend of July, audio specialist Sennheiser, in conjunction with event partner Paste Magazine, hosted a live broadcast / recording studio session housed in an alcove of an 18th century fortress, located on the site of this year’s Newport Folk Festival®. By simply donning a pair of Sennheiser RS 120 wireless consumer headphones, music fans were able to experience true-to-life, intimate performances artists from festival artists, including Of Monsters and Men, Tom Morello, Jonah Tolchin and 26 others.

Wherever possible, the entire audio chain consisted of Sennheiser related technology — including microphones from subsidiary Neumann and Sennheiser, preamplifiers from distributed brand TRUE Systems and wireless RF technology from Sennheiser.

The two-day recording session was not without its challenges. These included a live sound stage located just 100 yards away and an extremely reflective — and somewhat leaky — recording environment. Despite all this, the wireless headphones delivered a clean and quiet performance, faithfully representing the artists’ sounds for the duration of the two-day event.

Microphones on stage and in the room included several Neumann TLM 49s and KM 184s, two U 87s and a pair of Sennheiser e 906s. The microphones were connected to a pair of TRUE Systems Precision 8 preamplifiers, which — through a special feature on the back panel of the unit — split the signal and subsequently routed it to both a multi-track recording rig as well as a live mixer. Each of the Sennheiser wireless headphones received a live stereo mix of the multi track recording sessions courtesy of Nashville-based veteran engineer Steve Ledet. A Sennheiser A5000CP antenna was strategically placed in the rear of the grotto, providing a generous amount of RF coverage both inside and outside the grotto.

In addition to having many pairs of wireless headphones on hand, Sennheiser set up a special VIP seating area where listeners could audition an assortment of Sennheiser’s audiophile and professional headphones, including the HD 600, HD 650, HD 700, HD 800 and the new Amperior.

“Each of the performers we hosted at the Sennheiser Sound Lounge at the Paste Ruins takes an enormous amount of pride in the craftsmanship and honesty of their songs — this is of paramount importance to them,” commented Tim Moore, artist relations manager, Sennheiser. “By selecting a complete signal path of Sennheiser family gear before and after the mixing console, we were able to ensure the integrity of the audio at almost every stage. As a result, the performers were able to establish a more direct and honest connection with their fans.”

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Jonah Tolchin, who performed on the second day of the festival, found the Sennheiser Sound Lounge at the Paste Ruins particularly inspiring. “This is just incredible,” he said. “In this environment, with all these great mics, you are so zoned in and focused with all your heart and soul.” Tolchin recently released his debut album entitled Criminal Man, which was recorded using Neumann microphones. “The sound was very crisp and clear — I got true sound out of these mics and my music is true. So it was a good pairing!”

Clips of the performances will be made available for viewing via Sennheiser’s social media outlets over the next several weeks.

Youth Group Experiences Ultimate Yamaha and NEXO Audio System Thanks to Gand Concert Sound

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The tri-annual gathering of the Evangelical Lutheran Youth of America (ELCA) took place in late July at the Mercedes-Benz Super Dome in New Orleans, and the 35,000 plus teenage attendees once again were treated to praise activities, theatrical and musical performances, and the ultimate Yamaha and NEXO audio system thanks to the production services of Gand Concert Sound (GCS) of Glenview, Illinois, aka “the NEXO guys”. Christian acts including Rhema Soul, Lost and Found, Jimmy Buffet guitarist Peter Mayer, and GRAMMY® winners Switchfoot performed.

For its fourth time supporting the youth event, Gand provided a flown system comprising 60 NEXO GEO T speakers, 18 GEO S12, eight RS18 Ray Subs and 30 ground-stacked CD18 subs. Fifteen NEXO 4×4 amps were utilized to power dozens of NEXO PS15 and PS10s used for stage monitors and front fills, and PS8s used for under balcony delay speakers, as well as S12s and RS18’s.

“This was the first time the event was mixed totally digital from front of house to a pair of Yamaha M7CLs used for monitors on the A and B stages,” states Gary Gand, President, Gand Concert Sound. “A Yamaha LS9-16 was used for audio to video feeds to the Internet and an LS9-32 was put in place for the audience aux island stage. The use of all digital consoles allowed national acts such as Switchfoot, who flew from Seattle to New Orleans to make the show, call up their previous shows with GCS and get right down to business.”

Additionally, GCS used the new Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5045 processor developed specifically for Yamaha on specialty mics for added clarity. “We were able to achieve a great sound in one of the USA’s largest venues,” states front of house engineer Adam Rosenthal.

Gand bought their first large NEXO GEO T system in 2003 for an ELCA event held at the Georgia Dome. Since that time, they have continued to expand their inventory as NEXO has brought out more new products while they continue to add to their GEO T stock. “NEXO is constantly updating their software to improve the performance of the gear,” Gand says. “Now we have the integrated 4X4 amp that will work with every NEXO speaker in any combination enabling us to configure amps onsite for arrays, monitors, subs, in any combination and for any model.”

In addition to the July ELCA mega event, GCS also supplied audio production for the Pitchfork Fest in Chicago and dozens of other events around the Midwest.

Autoscript Demonstrates Prompting Solutions for Broadcasters at 2012 Texas Association of Broadcasters Show

AUSTIN, TEXAS, AUGUST 8, 2012—Autoscript, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, and a world-leading teleprompting company, is demonstrating several of its innovative prompting solutions for broadcasters at the 2012 Texas Association of Broadcasters Annual Convention & Tradeshow (Booth 107) this week.

“From LED prompters to software and wireless controls, attendees can expect to see the very latest in prompting technology at this year’s show,” says Greg Prentiss, sales director for the Americas, Autoscript. “We look forward to meeting with local broadcasters and introducing them to our solutions, which were designed with their production needs in mind.”

Autoscript is showcasing its compact, entry-level prompter, the ELP15 Plus. The perfect prompting solution for schools, colleges, universities and broadcasters, the ELP15 Plus offers a 15-inch monitor that is energy efficient—ensuring longevity, performance and reliability, and it contributes to green energy savings. It boasts 400 nits of brightness, composite, VGA and s-video inputs and the image-reversal capabilities necessary for prompting. Weighing just five pounds, the ELP15 Plus is an ideal teleprompter for entry-level users, while also offering great performance in the newsroom.

Also on site is the company’s line of LED teleprompters, ranging in size from eight to 19 inches. These on-camera prompter systems incorporate the latest in Autoscript’s illumination technology, the TFT (thin-film transistor) LED system. Unlike CCFLs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tubes), which take many minutes to reach full efficiency and light output, the company’s LED prompters offer instant warm-up to full brightness. In addition, these on-camera teleprompters come with a wide-angle hood, making them optimal for news- or studio-based productions.

For those looking for software, Autoscript is highlighting its +WinPlus-News+ software with the XBOX ULTRA. Compatible with all leading newsroom systems, including ENPS and iNEWS, +WinPlus-News+ offers users an all-in-one solution for show rundowns, cues and prompting. In addition to its enhanced features and capabilities, the XBOX ULTRA is ideal for portable prompting, as it can be plugged into a laptop or PC via its USB 2.0 interface. The video output is standard composite PAL or NTSC, but is also available in an SDI version.

Autoscript is also exhibiting its range of hand, foot and wireless scroll controls, including the new Magno Wireless Foot Control. This control allows presenters to control the speed of the script anywhere within the studio location, without the need to run cabling. Using RF technology on the 400-MHz license-free range, the Magno Foot Control will not interfere with any other devices and can be used up to 100 meters from the receiver module. The Magno Foot Control can be seamlessly added to existing Autoscript installations.
