EA’s Press Event at E3 Gets AV Support from WorldStage

High Tech met Old World when top game publisher Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) staged its press event during the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) at LA’s century-old Orpheum Theatre with AV support from WorldStage. “The Download: EA 2012 Preview” provided guests with a first look at EA’s upcoming titles with live demos, world premiere trailers and breaking news.

“Electronic Arts is one of the world’s leading game publishers, and we at WorldStage were proud to be the chosen provider of innovative, state-of-the-art technical solutions for their press event,” says WorldStage project manager Jack Dussault.

EA’s Press Conference was broadcast live on MTV2, Spike and G4 television. The event was part of Spike TV’s “E3 All Access Live” coverage, which featured more than 17 hours of multi-platform coverage from the convention. The press event premiered such highly-anticipated games as SimCity, Crysis 3, Battlefield 3, Medal of Honor Warfighter, Madden NFL 13 (with a live appearance by NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin), FIFA 13 and other projects currently in development.

“Besides a live invitation-only presentation, this year 1080i, 720P, 480i and composite feeds went out worldwide to -over three million viewers,” Dussault notes. “It was streamed live from 11 sites, including IGN, Boxdownstairs, Stuff We Like, EA.com, JeuxVideo, GameSpot, EuroGamer (France), Game Informer and Gamers Bliss. After the event, the footage was posted to sites such as GameSpot and G4, eventually reaching an estimated virtual audience of over six million viewers.”

“This was the fifth year Debra Robins, owner and Executive Producer of Plumbago Productions brought our firm in to support the audio and video requirements of the EA press event,” says Senior Account Executive Michael May. “Each year Debra and Plumbago Productions’ Creative Director, Jeffrey Hornaday create a unique, “boundary pushing” technical stage design. We were extremely honored to once again be part of the production team.”

WorldStage provided an array of display surfaces for the Orpheum stage. A custom 50′ x 30′ voile scrim that hung across the front edge of the proscenium served as the display surface for a trio of Christie HD18K projectors mounted on the front of the balcony.

Three LED screens were positioned upstage behind the scrim: a 15×26-foot center screen, which was stationary, and 6.5×10-foot screens on either side, which flew in and out depending on the segment and the look desired. The LEDs were composed of approximately 200 PIXLED F-6 LED tiles.

“During certain segments of the presentation, the LEDs went black so you couldn’t see them behind the scrim,” recalls May. “Then we’d fire them up and you’d get an awesome three-dimensional visual experience.” The LEDs gave a lot of depth to the stage. There was only 1 presenter that appeared between the main led screen and the scrim. This was the CEO – during his introduction,

Rounding out the video gear were five HD cameras: three Hitachi SK-HD1000s, one of them on a 30-foot jib, and two Sony BRC-H700s robotic cameras, WorldStage’s Digital MediaHub players and a Spyder screen switching system.

On the audio side, “We retrofitted the client’s demo game sources and video sources with state-of-the-art HDMI to 5.1 analog audio decoders to feed center, subs, left/ right side and rear true 5.1 surround sound with over a half-million watts of amplification for a truly amazing surround audio application,” says Dussault.

The WorldStage team for the EA press event included Shane Zinke as EIC, Jason Spencer Spyder operator, Rob Ricci media hub playback, Ken Stanford video director, Justin “MC This” Hammond robocams, Terry Nakamura and Bryan Dominick projectionists, Ken “soundmantofthestars” Newman A1, Geoff Gibson A2 systems and Will Herold A2 RF.

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.

D.A.S. AUDIO DEPLOYED AT STJARNAN F.C. HOME STADIUM

*** The Stjarnan F.C. home stadium ***

Garðabær, Iceland – August 2012 … Located in what many people know as Gardentown, Stjarnan F.C. is an Icelandic football (soccer) club that is part of the KSI Premiere League. For their home games, the stadium had previously used various portable PA systems for announcements. This situation resulted in inconsistent sound quality, creating a most frustrating experience for both the announcers and the fans alike. Recognizing the need for a better solution, stadium management recently elected to deploy a more permanent solution—one that was drawn from the catalog of Valencia, Spain-based D.A.S. Audio.

Garðabær based Northern Lights Audio, a design/build firm specializing in audio, video, lighting, security, and heating solutions for both the professional and residential markets, was contracted to design and install the stadium’s new sound reinforcement system. Þorsteinn Halldórsson, the firm’s owner discussed the project and his reasons for installing the D.A.S. Audio equipment. more

IBC Press Release: The T-VIPS TNS460 enables operators to deploy full end-to-end video signal monitoring

T-VIPS stand: Hall 1. B71.

Oslo, Norway – T-VIPS, a global leader in professional video contribution and distribution solutions, today announced the launch of its TNS460 HD/SD-SDI Monitor, a new addition to T-VIPS’ nSure product line which has been developed to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of high quality video content. 133rd AES Convention Product Design Track Breaks New Ground

Enhancing Acoustically Challenged Devices – Processor Agnostic Systems -
Audio For iPad Publishers

SAN FRANCISCO: “133rd AES Convention Product Design Track Chair Conrad Cooke has developed a groundbreaking combination of razor edge Tutorials, Workshops and Master Class Events,” states Convention Co-Chair Jim McTigue. “This Track is designed to provide deep insights into emerging technology which is expected to have a lasting impact on the field of pro audio.”

“My goal was to ferret out the most relevant issues facing today’s product designers,” Conrad Cooke said. “I uncovered a wealth of knowledge, and selected thirteen presentations which present techniques to help solve some of those common issues. We are confident that attendees will come away with invaluable information that will greatly benefit their future thinking.”

133rd AES Convention Product Design Track Events Include:

A Next Generation Audio Processing Suite For The Enhancement of Acoustically Challenged Devices: Presenter, Alan Seefeldt, Dolby Laboratories – A commercial audio processing suite has been developed to enhance the sound of acoustically challenged devices such as laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. This tutorial will address the design principles and algorithms developed for the suite. Each example was designed to operate within a common frequency domain framework. Several of these algorithms were tuned specifically for the acoustics of the device on which they operate.

Implementing Application Processor Agnostic Audio Systems For Portable Consumer Applications: Presenter, Jess Brown, Wolfson Microelectronics. – This tutorial will outline future audio trends for portable consumer devices. Areas covered include: HD audio voice, capture, playback and share. The total ‘mouth to ear’ audio solution will be reviewed, from both the technology and device perspectives.

Don’t Make Your Product a Noise Nightmare: William Whitlock, President/Chief Engineer, Jensen Transformers – Audio systems that operate on AC power experience interference in the form of ground voltage differences, magnetic fields, and electric fields. Establishing high immunity in real world, mass-produced equipment is not a trivial issue. This Master Class will probe the critical importance of high common-mode impedances; the disadvantages of legacy test methods; the new IEC test for CMRR; alternatives to ordinary input stages and ubiquitous design errors.

Audio For iPad Publishers: Jeff Essex, AudioSyncrasy – Book publishers are running to the iPad, and not just for iBooks, or one-off apps. This tutorial consists of two case studies which explore how to build audio creation and content management systems to produce multiple apps in high-volume environments, including VO production, concatenation schemes, file-naming conventions, audio file types for iOS, and, helping book publishers transition from the printed page to interactive publishing.

Audio In HTML 5: Jeff Essex, AudioSyncrasy, Jory K. Prum, studio.jory.org – HTML 5 is coming. Many expect it to supplant Flash as an online rich media player, as Apple has made abundantly clear. But audio support is slow in coming, and there are currently marked differences between browsers. From an audio content standpoint, it’s the Nineties all over again. The W3C’s Audio Working Group is developing standards, but this is a fast-moving target. This talk will provide an update on what’s working, what isn’t.

Multimedia Device Audio Architecture: Laurent Le Faucheur, Texas Instruments – This tutorial investigates a low cost, hardware audio architecture that solves several mobile low power multimedia application processor constraints related to: Legacy software reuse, signal processing performance, power optimization, multiple data format interfaces, and low latency voice and tones.

Audio DSP Requirements For Tomorrow’s Mobile & Portable Devices: John Richards, Oxford Digital Limited: Presenters: Peter Eastty ( Oxford Digital), Howard Brown (IDT), Bob Adams (ADI), Alan Kramer (SRS Labs), Julia Backman (Nokia), Cyril Martin (RIM) – As the convergence of communications, entertainment and computing races ahead, largely centered on portable and mobile devices where form factors are shrinking and style wins out over practicality of design in some instances, the challenges in delivering the audio DSP to provide good sound and differentiated effects are discussed by a panel of experts representing semiconductor manufacturers, mobile/portable device manufacturers and DSP IP providers.

Other Product Design Track Presentations Include:

* Ethernet Standard Audio: Steve Lampen, Belden
* Rub & Buzz and Other Irregular Loudspeaker Distortion: Wolfgang Klippel
* An Overview of Audio System Grounding and Interfacing: William Whitlock, Jensen Transformers
* AVB Networking For Product Designers: Rob Silfvast, Avid
* Graphical Audio/DSP Applications Development Environment For Fixed And Floating Point Processors: Miguel Chavez, Analog Devices

Scheduled for October 26 – 29 at SF’s Moscone Center, the Convention is expected to draw thousands of attendees from around the globe to its 4-day program of Broadcast/ Streaming, Educational, Live Sound and other Special Events.
