Seymour-Screen Excellence Introduces The Absolute Acoustically Transparent Film Screen

The Absolute features a fully-closing motorized lateral masking system

Full-Closing A.T. Motorized Lateral Masking Provides Variable Aspect Ratio with Constant Height

ISF-Certified A.T. 4K Surface and Infinite Black™ True Velvet Material Borders

Ames, IA – August 7, 2012 – Seymour-Screen Excellence today announced the debut of its Absolute curved fixed-frame acoustically transparent film-screen with a full-closing, motorized lateral masking system.

The Absolute is the first on the market to offer a motorized lateral masking system that returns to a fully-closed position. The masking system can be programmed to stop at any aspect ratio from 1.33:1 to 2.37:1.
So as to not compromise sound, both the screen and the masking layers are acoustically transparent.

The Absolute is available with either S-SE’s ISF-certified .98 gain Enlightor 4K or 1.1 gain Enlightor 2 acoustically transparent screen surface. The 4K material is a woven fabric that makes possible placement of the screen over in-wall loudspeakers (as close as desired) without creating a frequency or phase acoustic effect. The 4K material is the only AT screen that has no visible features indicating that it is acoustically transparent, and therefore has no minimum seating distance. Both Enlightor materials are free of the historical limitations of moiré or needing EQ compensation.

The Absolute’s 3.7-inch wide borders are comprised of the company’s Infinite Black™ true velvet material which absorbs 99.7% of projected light making for the sharpest border and over-scan absorption available today. “The masking mechanics are located behind the frame so the bezel depth does not get too thick like other masking screens on the market,” says S-SE managing director Chris Seymour.

The Absolute is available in image widths ranging from 70-inches wide (76-inch diag.) to 170-inches wide (184.5-inch diag.). Featured is a full-perimeter groove tensioning system that locks the screen with a perfectly continuous support. Pricing starts at $12,500 (MSRP).

S.E.A.L. Solutions — a Long Island, NY design and installation company with a discerning clientele that includes Hollywood actors, recording artists and professional athletes — installed a 110-inch wide (119.4-inches diag.) Absolute in its Theo Kalomirakis-designed home theater demonstration room, where it is paired with a Runco Q-750i LED DLP video projector.

Of The Absolute’s performance, S.E.A.L. CEO Chris Wyllie says, “I chose Seymour-Screen Excellence because I found the Enlightor 4K surface provides a bright, clear picture. This is extremely important to me as I’ve never been fully satisfied with even the most expensive vinyl-perforated designs available today.”

Bexel’s Custom Equipment Rental Package Gives Audiences a Glimpse Inside The Glass House

Tailored Solution Is Perfect Fit for ABC’s Interactive Reality Competition’s Production Needs

BURBANK, CA, AUGUST 7, 2012—Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group’s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, supplied a state-of-the-art custom equipment package for ABC’s new interactive real-time reality competition, The Glass House. As ABC’s second in-house produced show, Bexel worked closely with technical consultant Jerry Kaman and Tim Bock, ABC’s vice president of production for alternative series and specials, to find solutions that would help meet the demands of the aggressive, technically advanced 24-hour show.

The Glass House features 14 contestants living and competing for a quarter-million dollars in a state-of-the-art house that is under complete surveillance, with no access to the outside world. The contestants aren’t just competing with each other, but also playing the game to win over the audience each week.

Bexel supplied more than 50 cameras for The Glass House, including close to 40 robotic cameras, seven fixed cameras and eight large studio cameras/handhelds for the show. Among these were Panasonic’s new AW-HE120 2.2 mega-pixel robotic cameras. Not only do the Panasonic robotic cameras provide excellent picture quality, their entire control system is IP-based. This makes it easy for busy show staff members to deploy the cameras and use off-the-shelf equipment for camera control.

The Glass House is a large-scale job that integrates some of the more complicated equipment that we own,” says Johnny Pastor, director of technical services, Bexel. “From rigging to the engineering and large router infrastructure this is an ideal project for us, as Bexel’s expertise and experience is a perfect fit for these types of reality shows.”

The production also called for robotic cameras with infrared capabilities. For those, Bexel turned to Camera Corps and its Q-Ball. The Q-Ball is Camera Corps’ latest HD/SD pan-and-tilt camera system, combining both appearance and performance in the smallest system currently available. The Q-Ball incorporates a built-in 10x zoom optical lens and smooth accelerating pan/tilt motors in a sturdy, fully weatherproof aluminum sphere with a diameter of 115 mm/4.5in.

For the project, Bexel also built a custom HD control room with a large fiber infrastructure and custom work benches for producers and loggers. A PESA router was utilized with a distributed audio routing system, which made the cabling very easy—requiring the team to simply interconnect everything using fiber.

Technomad Loudspeakers Blanket Larkin Square in Buffalo with Brilliant Audio Quality

Noho C and Vienna weatherproof loudspeakers deliver high-quality music, intelligible announcements across large new public space

BOSTON, August 7, 2012 – The Larkin Development Group of Buffalo, NY has unveiled a multi-purpose public space in the Larkin District of Buffalo, NY to further unite the community. The newly developed Larkin Square is alive with outdoor concerts, retail markets, office buildings, lounge areas and more, bringing people together in a vibrant open-air environment.

Stretching the length of one city block, Larkin Square features an exceptional professional audio system equipped with 25 Technomad advanced audio loudspeakers. The new audio system supports the “Live at Larkin” summer concert series, a weekly Wednesday evening entertainment series featuring local musicians and nationally recognized artists.

Local systems integration firm Powerhouse Pro Systems strategically positioned the loudspeakers throughout the square to maximize coverage for large audiences. The weatherproof loudspeakers deliver background music and announcements, including public safety information, to roughly 10,000 people gathered in the square each week.

The Technomad loudspeakers comprise a mix of the company’s Noho and Vienna loudspeakers, and were chosen for their ability to deliver intelligible voice and background music in a compact and durable package. The weatherproof loudspeakers are unprotected from outdoor elements and deployed in a 70-volt configuration to accommodate lengthy cable runs.

Tony Spencer of the Buffalo-based Powerhouse Pro Systems installed the systems in cooperation with local electrical designer Paul Foxe of Wittburn Enterprises. Spencer, in the AV installation business for more than two decades, consistently uses Technomad loudspeakers for their ability to withstand rigorous climates and project full-range audio with broad dispersion over long distances.

“Technomad loudspeakers were designed to perform under a multitude of weather conditions, whether it’s 90-degree heat in the summertime or below-zero temperatures during winter,” said Spencer. “We get both in Buffalo, so having durable, weatherproof construction that could withstand snow and ice buildup was of major importance. We also wanted loudspeakers that offered good projection and delivered well-rounded audio with an admirable amount of bass. The Noho and Vienna were the perfect fit for this project as they are the ideal size, and deliver superbly intelligible speech and unmatched audio.”

Spencer and Foxe installed 10 Noho loudspeakers on five light poles spread throughout the square. The two-per-light pole strategy ensures an even outdoor audio pattern outside with broad audio coverage at any volume.

The remaining 11 Nohos blanket a covered walkway area that can accommodate 1,000 people, with the loudspeakers positioned high above the crowds. The Nohos in this section are evenly spaced and directed inward to the crowd — ensuring even audio coverage and a pleasant background music soundtrack to match the relaxing, lounge-like atmosphere of the space.

The duo also installed four compact Vienna loudspeakers in the nearby covered stage area, which is an elevated space for smaller live acts.

“We placed the Viennas roughly 10 feet up from the stage floor, which was the ideal height to deliver the perfect pitch here,” said Spencer. “This space doubles as a lounge area with background music when not being used for a live band. The Viennas fill the need perfectly.”

The Technomad system is performing without fail, and Spencer notes that there are future plans to expand Larkin Square with additional shops and recreational space. “I’m used to Technomad performing well, and that’s why I continually rely on their excellence,” he said. “When they expand, we’ll turn to Technomad again. There’s no other choice in my mind.”

MHA Audio Acquires Martin Audio MLA™ System

Waterloo, ONT––MHA Audio of Hagerstown, MD, an award-winning sound reinforcement and live event production company in the northeastern US, recently joined ranks with other leading audio providers who have acquired the breakthrough Martin Audio MLA Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array system.

MHA Audio provides professional sound systems and production management services regularly for leading local promoters and event companies such as IMP Productions, Live Nation, Merriweather Post Pavilion, Pier Six Pavilion Partners, and Showcall Inc.

As part of its dynamic growth, MHA Audio has purchased the MLA System 36 (24 MLA enclosures and 12 MLX subwoofers) to fulfill the company’s busy schedule of live events. MHA recently provided their new MLA rig for the annual Capital Jazz Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion along with shows by Maroon Five, Katy Perry, Fiona Apple, Drive by Truckers & Lucinda Williams, AVICII, Kaskade, Queensryche, Luke Bryan and other leading artists.

Commenting on the MLA acquisition, Mike Scarfe said, “MHA Audio is excited to offer the MLA System to our clients. About MLA™ (Multi-cellular Loudspeaker Array)
The result of many years of intensive R&D, MLA’s methodology replaces trial-and-error array design with intelligent numerical optimization of the array’s output based on a highly accurate acoustic model. The multi-cellular format has six individual cells in each enclosure, each with its own DSP and amplification.

With up to 24 enclosures, each MLA array has up to 144 cells — too great a number to optimize manually, or by ear. Instead, Martin Audio’s proprietary Display2™ system design software automatically calculates FIR DSP filters for each cell and a redundant-ring audio network (U-NET™) downloads the settings into each array enclosure. Martin Audio’s VU-NET™ software provides real-time control and monitoring of the system.

MLA delivers a frequency response and SPL consistency never before achievable; a very high system output (140dB peak, per cabinet @1m); Automatic optimization of the array, both physically (splay angles) and electronically (DSP); Computer control and monitoring of the entire system, and total control of sound system balance for engineers and sound technicians.

MLA is fully integrated, with Class D amplification, DSP and U-NET digital audio network built into each enclosure. MLA complete systems are ready-to-use, with MLA, MLD and MLX enclosures, flying hardware, software, cabling and training all supplied. Everything needed is included. All ancillary items — from tablet PC and Merlin™ controller to network interconnects and mains distro — are also included in the complete system package. This ensures full compatibility worldwide, down to cabling and accessories.

Additional features include 90° x 7.5° dispersion; a compact size (1136mm wide x 372mm high x 675mm deep), one-box-fits-all (festivals to theaters) application range and a global voltage, power factor corrected power supply.

MLA’s compact size and very high output allows it to be shipped using smaller trucks, offering considerable savings and reduced carbon footprint. The system also includes the MLX powered, flyable subwoofer capable of an unprecedented measured peak output of 150dB @ 1m; MLD downfill cabinet, and Merlin 4-in/10-out system controller and network hub. Audio input is via analog, AES3 or U-NET.

By adopting these principles and system components MLA is optimized for every member of the audience — from a 2,000 capacity theater, to a 20,000-seat arena, to a 100,000-person festival site. It will deliver the engineer’s exact mix to every seat (up to over 150 meters) with precision, exceptional power and clarity.

About Martin Audio®
Founded by audio engineer David Martin in 1971, Martin Audio pioneered the use of all-horn-loaded bass designs in world-class touring loudspeaker systems for groups such as Pink Floyd, ELP and Supertramp. Located outside of London, Martin Audio now embodies a sophisticated mix of acoustic design, research, mathematical modeling and software engineering for a wide range of products in the installation, cinema and touring sound markets.

Clay Paky Sharpys Shine a Light on Miss Florida USA 2013 Pageant

Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures made their debut on the Miss Florida USA 2013 pageant, which was televised from Davie’s Bailey Concert Hall on the campus of Broward University.
