HARMAN’s dbx® Debuts Its TR1616 BLU Link I/O at PLASA 2012

LONDON, United Kingdom – HARMAN’s dbx today announced the introduction of its TR1616 BLU link I/O a 16-input/16-output digital on ramp/off ramp module that brings professional digital networked audio connectivity to an attractive price point.

“Our new TR1616 allows users to create a digital snake or network to the size they need with plug-and-play simplicity. In an easy to use and highly flexible way using the BLU link digital audio bus,” said Noel Larson, Market Manager for Portable PA, Tour and Recording. “Thanks to the TR1616, customers will no longer have to keep buying new systems and replacing old ones, as the system will expand with your needs.”

The TR1616 offers 16 XLR/TRS analog inputs and 16 analog outputs, along with BLU link RJ-45 Loop input and output and an RJ-45 Snake input and output ports. Users can configure up to 256 channels at 48kHz or up to 128 channels at 96kHz. No addressing or programming is required.

Each of the TR1616’s 16 front-panel channels features a high-quality dbx mic preamp with mic gain, 20dB pad, low-cut filter, +48V phantom power and polarity selection, along with signal, clipping and additional indicators. A rear-panel USB and Ethernet port enables uploading future firmware updates.

Up to 60 TR1616 units can be linked together with no loss of control or fidelity, enabling first-time users to expand their systems as their connectivity requirements increase. The dbx TR1616 is ideal for use with mixing consoles and with the new dbx PMC Personal Monitor Controller, a remote control that allows performers to easily set up and control their personal mix of up to 16 channels of audio via a BSS Audio BLU link interface. Iconyx Breathes New Life into Eden Resort Courtyard

Lancaster, PA – September 2012…  Champagne Sunday Brunch in the Eden Courtyard at the Best Western Eden Resort & Suites has become a local area tradition, attracting patrons with an ever-changing menu that draws from the region’s finest seasonal ingredients. But while the Courtyard is known for its dining and social events, the room’s acoustics have long made it a challenge to attract speaking engagements. With its 40-foot-high glass ceiling, hard stone floor and hard walls, the room’s reverberation made intelligibility nearly non-existent.

“This is a gorgeous space and great for social events – cocktail receptions and so forth,” says Stephen Sikking, managing partner, Eden Resort & Suites. “But when a speaker wanted to present something to the entire room, it was very problematic to articulate so that people could hear intelligibly.”

Bob Bickelman, senior audio designer with Manheim, PA-based Clair Brothers Audio Systems, Inc., agrees. “The reverb time is pretty long,” says Bickelman. In addition to a massive water fountain at one end of the room, he says, “There is a rather large vaulted skylight running across the middle of the room that creates some very strange reflections.”

To address the room’s acoustical challenges, Clair Brothers selected the Renkus-Heinz Iconyx IC24-R-II digitally controlled column loudspeaker system, installing the arrays in the two front corners of the courtyard. The ability to precisely steer the Iconyx array’s multiple sonic beams had an immediate impact on the intelligibility factor. “Being able to direct the sound downward and away from the walls was huge,” says Bickelman.

Bickelman selected the Iconyx system based on both on price and performance. “We had previous experience with the Iconyx,” he explains. “Not long ago I did a synagogue down in Cherry Hill, NJ, and liked the way they performed and their ease of use. And they certainly cost less than some alternatives.”

Using Renkus-Heinz’s RHAON CobraNet-based DSP software, individual Iconyx elements can be shaped and aimed with programmable precision, lowering or raising the acoustic center as desired.

The newly installed system at Eden Resort & Suites also includes several Shure wireless microphones and is managed by a Symetrix DSP automixing and processing system with ARC (Adaptive Remote Control) programmable wall panels.

“Iconyx has been a wonderful addition to our courtyard,” comments Sikking. “Now we can take a 400- to 500-person room and actually use it for an event that includes speaking engagements. Because of the Iconyx system we are now able to be on individual company lists, social lists, and so forth for speaking events. These speakers have made a dramatic difference.”

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Introduces VTX-LZ-K Laser Accessory Kit for Precision Alignment of VTX Series Line Arrays

LONDON, United Kingdom – At PLASA 2012, HARMAN’s JBL Professional is introducing the VTX-LZ-K Laser Accessory Kit, which facilitates the alignment of JBL VTX Series line array loudspeakers for optimum performance and audience coverage.

The VTX-LZ-K includes two VTX-LZ laser units and one rechargeable VTX-LZ-PS power supply. The VTX-LZ employs a Class 3R green laser (less than 5 mW, 532 nm wavelength) and is approximately 20 times more visible than a red laser for maximum visibility over long distances indoors or outdoors. The VTX-LZ laser units connect to the VTX-LZ-PS power supply by means of a standard XLR cable and multiple lasers can be daisy-chained (up to 10 units powered from a single power supply).

All VTX-LZ-K components feature rugged aluminum and high-impact plastic weather-resistant construction for long-term durability. The laser units are factory-calibrated, weather-resistant and feature fan-cooling and on/off cycling for extended laser life.

VTX-LZ laser units attach to the VTX enclosure suspension frame and are secured using a quick-release locking pin. Lasers can be mounted on either side of the enclosure by changing the orientation of the VTX-LZ mount tab and since the laser is centered on the middle of the enclosure, it provides an accurate site angle reference in accordance with JBL Line Array Calculator II (LAC II) software predictions.

“Precise VTX V25 line array vertical pattern control requires precise focus to achieve optimum coverage and the VTX-LZ-K Laser Accessory Kit is a valuable time-saver that helps to ensure the best possible setup of a JBL VTX line array system,” said Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound for JBL Professional. “Multiple VTX-LZ lasers can also be used to assist with microphone placement for more detailed system measurement as part of the calibration and tuning process and this has been specifically designed into the workflow of recently-released JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software.”

When mounted on the top enclosure of a VTX line array, the VTX-LZ laser provides a visual reference to confirm the on-axis vertical site angle of the array while also providing an azimuth indication so that relative horizontal pan angles can be matched for FOH left-right arrays. With reference to LAC II software, the normal installation procedure is to attach a tape measure to the lower front corner of the bottom VTX enclosure as a reference for setting array trim height. Once the array trim height is set, the front motor is turned off, the VTX-LZ is turned on and the rear motor is manipulated to adjust the array site angle while visually referring to the laser to ensure that top enclosure is pointed at the rear of the desired audience location.
For advanced system tuning, multiple LZ lasers can be deployed to serve as site angle references for individual array circuits, assisting in physical measurement microphone placement to correspond with virtual measurement microphones shown in LAC.

Using JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ control software and with reference to measured spatial response, circuit level gain shading and JBL Line Array Control Panel (LACP) frequency tapering adjustments are performed as a first step in system tuning. This initial step is referred to as array calibration and JBL LAC II / LACP simulations provide a good starting point. For the actual real world installation, VTX-LZ lasers mounted on array circuits can be used as a reference for microphone placement to verify and further refine the starting point gain shading and tapering parameters that were pre-determined in JBL LAC II / LACP and Performance Manager.

Once SPL and frequency response has been optimized on a circuit level, global equalization can then be applied to the entire array to compensate for room-related effects. For this step, array equalization can be based on the spatial average of all measurement microphones that were placed throughout the audience area with reference to VTX-LZ laser aiming locations. This patented approach to system measurement and tuning has been specifically designed into the workflow of Performance Manager (US patent 2008/0170729).

HARMAN’S JBL Marquis Dance Club Series Loudspeakers Bring High-Impact Sound to Club-Goers Worldwide

JBL Marquis Dance Club Series speakers have been adopted in a number of clubs worldwide. Three notable installations include the Blue Martini in Las Vegas, Nevada, Boogie Nights in Moorestown, New Jersey and Club MUTE in Seoul, South Korea.

The Blue Martini was voted to have Las Vegas’ best happy hour and keeps the party going with its JBL Marquis Dance Club Series loudspeakers, which are used for both DJ music and live bands. “The JBL Marquis loudspeakers are equally adept at DJ and live sound,” said Lord Toussaint of Miami, Florida systems integrator Infinite Audio Systems (www.goinfinite.com). “That’s because they’re high-output, wide-bandwidth speakers that will work with any music source.”

The Blue Martini system is comprised of four Marquis Series MD49 quad-amplified high-power 4-way loudspeakers complemented by two AM7215/95 high-power 2-way speakers. All are driven by Crown Audio CDi Series power amplifiers. “One of the key features of the MD49 is its rotatable midrange/high-frequency waveguide assembly, which enabled the speakers to be hung horizontally from the ceiling,” Toussaint pointed out. “We needed to do this because of sight line and architectural considerations and the MD49 was absolutely perfect for the application.”

“The MD49’s are quad-amplified and we’re running separate amps to the woofers, midrange, high-frequency and super tweeters, which gives incredibly clear, powerful and articulate sound that can handle anything the live bands or the DJs can throw at the speakers,” Toussaint added.

When Atlantic City’s Tropicana Casino and Resort renovated a section of its space into the Boogie Nights ’70s and ‘80s retro-themed dance club, they knew they needed a sound system that could accommodate an out of the ordinary situation. The club comprises a long space situated adjacent to the casino floor and is separated into three discreet sections: the club area, bar area and lounge. The challenge was to provide dance club-quality sound and volume levels within the dance club area while minimizing bleed-over into the casino area.

For the club area, New Jersey-based sound contractor Starlite Productions hung four JBL MD49 speakers and four MD7 dual 18-inch subwoofers and aimed them to cover the dance floor from all sides while providing stereo imaging from any area on the dance floor. The speakers are positioned around the perimeter of a large circular truss about 30 feet in diameter, suspended 20 feet above the dance floor. This allows dancers to enjoy the full impact of the music, yet people can step outside the circle and talk without interference from the high output levels of the speakers. There are also 10 MD55 loudspeakers throughout the bar and lounge.

“Starlite did a fantastic job, especially since the installation space was very challenging,” said David Peña, Owner of Boogie Nights. “Since the club is a transformation of a huge open space, it was a difficult room to fill evenly with sound. The system is incredible! Customers constantly comment on how impressed they are and how clean it sounds.”

It’s hard not to walk into Seoul, South Korea’s Club MUTE without doing a double-take, as the décor is breathtakingly distinctive, with sculptured ceiling panels, diamond-shaped wall detailing accented by inset lights, hourglass-shaped seating and curved metalwork. Even the DJ booth is unique, looking like a giant futuristic birdcage.

A special space like Club MUTE deserved a special sound system—and the Marquis Dance Club Series provided just that! The club features an all-out JBL Marquis Dance Club Series setup that includes two MD1 ultra-high-frequency modules, two MD2 mid/high-frequency modules, four MD3 low-frequency modules and four MD46 quad-amplified full-range speakers. The speakers are hung in two main clusters at the left and the right of the DJ booth. In addition, two JBL ASB7128 subwoofers, two MRX515 loudspeakers and a PRX612M stage monitor are deployed throughout the club and in the DJ booth. The speakers are powered by a variety of Crown amplifiers.

DPA Microphones’ 4060 Miniature Capsule Mic Provides Discreet Clarity for Tony Award-Winning Musical Once

NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 11, 2012 – Once, Broadway’s Tony Award-winning Best New Musical, relies on DPA Microphones’ 4060 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphones to provide a transparent sound in a small, discreet capsule. Based on the 2007 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, Once takes place on a set designed to give audience members the illusion that they are watching a true event unfold, making them feel as though they are right on stage with the actors. The natural sound DPA 4060s have aided in giving this impression.

With such specific requirements, Once Sound Designer Clive Goodwin turned to the DPA 4060 for its excellent sound and ability to provide an intimate sound in a large Broadway theater. To achieve this, Goodwin hides the DPA 4060 in the actors’ hair or beards, with the microphones in close proximity to the mouth, where possible. He also hides a 4060 in the concertina, and each of the ukuleles and cajons, as well as two in the accordion. By equipping each actor and musician with the small capsules, Goodwin ensures that audience members are visually unaware of any amplification happening behind the scenes.

“My main consideration in selecting a microphone was the sound quality,” says Goodwin. “To me, the DPA 4060s have a transparency and clarity that is missing in many other mics of this type. They have a sound that is closer to a large diaphragm microphone than a tiny body mic, and they accurately transmit the sounds of the instruments and the actors’ voices. This is important, because you have to start with a good source, such as the DPA 4060, because the audio just gets degraded through other gear after that.”

Supplied by Masque Sound, the new microphones are being used with Sennheiser wireless systems. Designed for use with wireless systems in theater, television and instrument applications that use close microphones, DPA’s 4060 miniature microphones are exceedingly accurate and highly unobtrusive. Because of their small size, these tiny condensers exhibit a precise omnidirectional pattern and therefore do not need to be aimed directly at the sound source to achieve quality pickup.

As Once is staged in a 1,000-seat theater, Goodwin’s ultimate goal was to make every audience member feel close to the stage. With very few sets or props involved in the production, he knew that the best way to draw people into the performance was through sound. “One of the factors we considered when selecting microphones for the production was making the actors’ voices sound natural,” he notes. “Our show isn’t as loud as you might expect it to be; I wanted it to sound as natural as possible. I also wanted to retain the sense of intimacy that we had in the small theaters where we did our workshops.

This way, the audience would be drawn into the production, rather than just listening to the music. Our aim was for them to listen closely and be drawn into the story that unfolds. And, it seems to be working, as people are leaving the theater with smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. I think the DPA 4060 plays a significant role in this.”

Bar Sport Gets a Winning Community Solution

Maidenhead, UK, September 2012… Oxfordshire-based RealSound and Vision has completed the installation of a Community sound system for Cedar Sports Management Ltd. at Bar Sport in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

The new Bar Sport venue is located at Grenfell Island, a popular area in the town for cafés, bars, restaurants and the cinema. “Being a sports venue, the timeline for their scheduled opening was pretty much dictated by Euro 2012,” commented RealSound’s Managing Director, David Nibbs. “This defined a tight schedule for the sound and dance floor lighting to be designed and installed, but with a decisive client and good service from our suppliers we were able to complete the installation on time.”

RealSound designed the system using Community ceiling loudspeakers to maintain clear sightlines to the bar’s 42 video screens in the low-ceiling venue. “With high ambient noise levels we chose Community for their high efficiency, intelligibility and well defined coverage” said Nibbs. “Bar Sport has four zones over two levels and required 15 Community D6 ceiling loudspeakers to provide optimum coverage. Their high efficiency meant we only needed to tap each loudspeaker at 15W and could comfortably drive the system with a t&mSystems Project120.4P four zone power amplifier and still have ample headroom.”

“The more challenging area from a design perspective was the central dance floor,” Nibbs continues. “With the ceiling height and sightline issue, traditional large box loudspeakers were unacceptable. I discussed this with Stuart Cunningham of CUK Audio, the Community distributor. He came up with an unusual but ideal proposal, suggesting four Community MX10 monitor loudspeakers, ceiling mounted at each corner of the dance floor. This provided a perfect solution: With their mounting brackets, the MX10s were easy to ceiling mount and presented minimal intrusion into the room. The loudspeakers could be accurately directed to the dance floor, minimizing reflected sound both within the venue, and to the surrounding residential areas. And the MX10 uses the same family of drivers as the D6, giving consistent sound quality throughout the venue.”

The dance floor system is completed by two Community VLF212 subs for high power low frequency energy. A Powersoft M28Q four channel amplifier drives the dance floor system. System control is via a DBX ZonePro 1261 central processor, with four DBX ZC-8 remote control wall plates providing user flexibility.

The venue is additionally used for both live music events and DJ entertainment. In the DJ booth,RealSound provided a Denon DN-X1100 DJ mixer and two Denon DN-SC3900 media players. For continuous music playback throughout the day, they also installed a Tascam CD200i CD player with integral iPod dock plus a Numark iDec as a second iPod docking and control facility.

A very compact and discreet lighting system was also installed around the dance floor, consisting of six Chauvet ColorBand Pix RGB LED battens and two Chauvet DMF10 LED moonflowers, operated via a Martin Professional 2510 lighting controller.

“The Community loudspeakers allowed us to achieve a powerful foreground system very discreetly, and the client is suitably impressed with the result,”concluded Nibbs. “Bar Sport has chosen a bumper sporting year to open this new venue and I’m pleased we’ve delivered a system which will enable their customers to enjoy the many upcoming events to the fullest.”

HARMAN’s Crown Audio Expands Its VRACK Offerings With Introduction of VRACK 4x3500HD Complete Multichannel Amplification System

LONDON, United Kingdom — HARMAN’s Crown Audio today announced it is adding to its popular VRACK complete amplifier management solutions with the introduction of its VRACK 4x3500HD. The new version incorporates three of Crown’s flagship I-Tech 4x3500HD DriveCore™ Series 4-channel power amplifiers in a single road-ready plug-and-play rack, providing a versatile, turnkey multichannel amplifier solution for tour, rental and installed sound applications.

Designed to work hand in hand with JBL VTX and VERTEC Series models with upcoming support planned for JBL VRX and STX models, the VRACK 4x3500HD includes three built-in Crown I-Tech HD Series 4×3500 DriveCore power amps, analog and digital connections and a globally universal power distribution system that can be set to meet US and international power standards. All the components are housed in a wheeled rack with a captive suspension system that enables it to be flown in the same manner as a line array loudspeaker system. Multiple VRACKs can be linked together for integrated operation in larger systems.

The I-Tech 4x3500HD amplifiers feature a 4.3-inch front-panel LCD touchscreen that provides amplifier monitoring and access to key functions with color-keyed visuals. Each amplifier offers an extensive complement of inputs and outputs including four analog inputs, four AES3 digital inputs and four AES inputs over VDrive and the ability to select four CobraNet® inputs. The amplifiers also include SpeakON or banana plug speaker connectors.

The VRACK 4x3500HD utilizes HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ 3.2 control functionality and Version 5 DSP preset support for JBL Professional’s new VTX Series V25 plus VERTEC Series line array loudspeakers. System Architect provides control through monitoring and adjustment on a rack-by-rack basis and the ability to make changes to all three amps in the VRack through a single interface. The VRACK 4x3500HD is also compatible with JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ sound reinforcement system design software for enhanced control and monitoring capabilities.

The I-Tech 4x3500HD amplifiers deliver 1,900 watts per channel into eight ohms, 2,400 watts per channel into four ohms and 4,200 watts into four ohms bridged. The amplifiers provide extensive DSP sound-tailoring capability and incorporate Crown’s exclusive linear phase FIR and IIR filters to provide optimized loudspeaker crossover points with improved midrange clarity and off-axis response. The amplifiers’ USB port enables users to load preset amplifier settings or device files and update firmware.

HARMAN’s Crown Audio Showcases PIP-BLU Programmable Input Processor Card for Its CTs Series Amplifiers At PLASA 2012

LONDON, United Kingdom — At PLASA 2012, HARMAN’s Crown Audio is showcasing its PIP-BLU Programmable Input Processor (PIP) card for the Crown CTs Series power amplifiers. The PIP-BLU adds BSS Audio Soundweb London digital audio bus functionality to Crown CTs Series amplifiers, offering a simple, cost-effective way to get digital audio all the way to the amplifiers.

“The PIP-BLU adds BSS Audio’s Soundweb London digital audio bus to Crown’s popular CTs Series amplifiers, without having to use additional network switches. This makes installation much easier, saves time and money, greatly simplifies the cabling within an amplifier rack and provides advanced control and monitoring capabilities,” said Daniel Saenz, Install Business Segment Manager, Crown Audio. “With the PIP-BLU, contractors are now able to leverage the functionality and simplicity of the Soundweb London digital audio bus all the way to the amplifiers.”

The PIP-BLU is compatible with Crown CTs Series 2-channel amplifiers built after April 2011. It provides BSS Audio Soundweb London digital audio bus functionality along with analog input and output connectors, and offers two digital audio bus channels to the amplifier, an RJ-45 Ethernet jack for remote configuration, control and monitoring and two digital audio bus channels back from the amp (for the listen bus), along with two analog input channels and two analog output channels. The analog channels provide analog backup and also facilitate using the CTs amplifier as a 2-channel Break-In Box (BIB). The analog outputs provide a buffered version of the inputs, allowing daisy-chaining down a rack.

The PIP-BLU card allows the amplifier to be connected into the Soundweb London digital audio bus ring, providing the sharing of digital audio, fault tolerance and greatly simplifies cabling. The PIP-BLU uses HARMAN’s HiQnet™ protocol and is configured, controlled and monitored using HiQnet London Architect.
