Updated Edition of Industry Standard Book Released – Show Networks and Control Systems by John Huntington

Author, educator, and industry veteran John Huntington has released Show Networks and Control Systems, the completely updated and revised edition of his industry standard reference text, which was previously titled, Control Systems for Live Entertainment. The book includes an in-depth examination of the control and networking technology used in lighting, lasers, sound, stage machinery, animatronics, special effects, and pyrotechnics used in concerts, theme parks, theatre, themed retail, cruise ships, museums, interactive performing arts, and special events.

“With the increasing impact and ubiquity of networking in our market, I felt a new edition with an expanded networking focus was important,” comments Huntington. “So, I completely reorganized the content; checked, updated, and expanded the information; and added a lot more information. And, to reflect the changes in the market I also changed the title.” There are 30 new pages of material including dramatically expanded show networking technology along with real-world examples for reference and graphical aids have been added to help navigate through the information, as well as a glossary. Huntington has presented the information in a form readable straight through by motivated, independent readers, while also making the structure modular enough to be useful for working professionals, educators, and students. In addition, Huntington is now posting supplemental video lectures for each chapter on his website, www.controlgeek.net.

As in the previous editions, he focuses not on gear, which constantly becomes obsolete, but on techniques and standards, because Huntington thinks it’s critical that people know not only the ‘what’ but the ‘why’ of entertainment technologies. “Though I’ve tried not to be extremely technical, this is a field of ever-increasing technological complexity,” comments Huntington. “It’s important for the average technician to learn how to put together reliable systems and make sure the show actually happens.”
The well-received book is quickly becoming an industry ‘must read’ for both working professionals and educators, as noted in much of the praise of Show Networks and Control Systems:

“We also tell our newly hired engineers that they should be conversant with the entire contents of this book because it covers the core knowledge commonly needed in the design of show control systems.” – Glenn Birket, P.E., President, Birket Engineering, Inc.

“This book is the definitive guide for designing and using network technology across a wide range of live performance applications. It’s a must-read for designers, technicians, and engineers of all experience levels.” – Steve Terry, VP of Research & Development Electronic Theatre Controls

“Most technicians can learn to use show networking and control equipment. They accomplish this by reading manuals and taking classes. Exceptional technicians understand how their gear works inside and out. They accomplish this by reading John Huntington’s book.” – Jason Potterf, Cisco

“John Huntington’s book provides an invaluable introduction to networking for entertainment systems, helping students build a foundation and vocabulary for systems integration across lighting, sound, media, scenery, and more.” – David Boevers, Professor, Carnegie Mellon School of Drama

“This book presents these indispensable techniques and concepts in clear, concise terms and examples. It’s easily the best resource for anyone needing a better understanding of where entertainment control technology is today and where it’s headed in the future.” – Scott Fisher, President, Fisher Technical Services

Show Networks and Control Systems retails for $50 USD and is available through John Huntington’s website at www.controlgeek.net.

Vizrt introduces the IP-based Viz Engine

Vizrt Ltd. announced that the company has developed a new version of its real-time 3D compositing system, Viz Engine. This new version is a renderer capable of IP in and IP out as well as real-time compositing IP streams with graphics in a low cost solution. With IP capability in the new Viz Engine, Vizrt has created a complete end-to-end IP solution for broadcasters to manage all their content.

Broadcasting has traditionally been a SDI world. While formats change – SD, NTSC, PAL, HD – SDI remains a constant. Managing SDI content requires specialized equipment for the management and synchronization of the signal. It also requires a specially trained staff of broadcast engineers.

With an IP based workflow, broadcasting enters the IT world. Instead of SDI cables and routers built through a TV station’s infrastructure, one simply needs a network connection to distribute video. Content is becoming file-based so it can be easily stored, searched and distributed. Live video can exist as a stream that can be distributed to multiple platforms.

The latest version of the Viz Engine allows for IP-based streaming video IO. Graphics and video are composited in real-time and output as a stream that can be many formats from online, to mobile devices to live on-air. With no need for an expensive video card, the system takes up less rack space. The IT infrastructure makes it highly portable for OB vans and very affordable for broadcasters.

Multiple Viz Engines can render the same content and output different formats for multiple platforms. All in real-time, eliminating the need for transcoding to each platform.

“This innovative solution changes the traditional SDI workflow of broadcasters to a IP streaming and file-based workflow, allowing them to increase speed and volume while retaining high quality,” stated Petter Ole Jakobsen, CTO Vizrt. “The cost of the solution puts the highly capable Viz Engine in the reaches of web-based productions as well as allows broadcasters to bolster their efficiency by directly rendering to any platform during a live broadcast.”

About Vizrt:

Vizrt offers a new vision for content creation and delivery with an end-to-end solution from ingest to visualization. Our solution combines Vizrt’s true 2D/3D graphics tools with Curious Software’s World Maps and Ardendo’s Asset Management. Running on non proprietary software, the combination of these unique cutting edge products ensures a seamless workflow from conception to multi-format distribution.

Vizrt’s product suite is used by the world’s leading broadcasters including: CNN, CBS, Fox, BBC, Sky, ITN, ZDF, Star TV, TV Today, CCTV and NHK. Also, many world-class production houses and corporate institutions, including both the New York and London Stock Exchanges, utilize Vizrt solutions.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Showcases Si Performer US Debut at WFX and Provides Si Compact Consoles for Hands-On Training Sessions

At the Worship Facilities Conference and Expo (WFX) in Atlanta, Vision2 Marketing will be demonstrating the new HARMAN Soundcraft Si Performer console—the US debut of the first and only audio console with integrated DMX functionality—at Booth 658. Soundcraft is also sponsoring the Hands-On Training (HOT) sessions at WFX, which are designed to improve the technical knowledge and skills of the entire tech arts department of any church.

The Si Performer builds upon the successful Si Compact range to which it bears a likeness, providing almost twice as much DSP power and increased functionality, with an input capacity of 80 inputs to mix on all models. The unique integration of a DMX512 port offers core lighting control. The first release of software provides four scene masters (A-D) with associated slave channels on the ALT fader layers, individual color intensities or parameters are set on the slave faders with an overall master level fader, which itself may be assigned to any of the main fader layers for simultaneous access to audio and lighting levels.

For the HOT sessions, Soundcraft is supplying 18 of its Si Compact audio consoles for HOT attendees to work on over the three days of classes. In addition, Katy Templeman-Holmes and Tom Der of Soundcraft will be on hand to assist in the training and to answer any questions about the Si Compact products.

“As the house of worship market continues to grow, so does the importance of providing valuable training to church staff, and much of that responsibility belongs to the manufacturers of the technology,” Templeman-Holmes said. “The WFX HOT sessions will provide the opportunity for house of worship engineers to learn the ins and outs of audio mixing while working on world-class Si Compact digital consoles.”

In addition, the new Soundcraft Si Performer console is ideal for house of worship applications, according to Mick Beisel, CEO of Vision2 Marketing. “Because many churches rely on a single technical operator to control all elements of worship services and events, the Si Performer provides an opportunity to simplify these responsibilities by integrating both audio and lighting control into a single, compact console,” Beisel said. “We are excited to be the first to showcase the Si Performer in the United States and encourage all WFX attendees to experience the console for themselves!”
