ssors Evaluate Students with Vaddio HD Cameras at William Carey University

On October 23, 2007, the Board of Trustees at William Carey University (WCU), located in Hattiesburg, Miss., unanimously voted to construct the WCU College of Osteopathic Medicine. The rationale was to open the College of Osteopathic Medicine to address the severe shortage of physicians in Mississippi and surrounding states and to impact the healthcare of rural Mississippians. In summer of 2010, the new facility opened and the College of Osteopathic Medicine enrolled an inaugural class of 110 students. Three buildings comprise the medical complex: Academic Building, Medical Arts Building and the Asbury Administrative Center.

The Medical Arts Building consists of a clinical skills area/clinic, two simulator rooms, eight clinical exam rooms, a furnished video production/teleconference studio, and student government and faculty offices. Scott Daniel, President of Vision Integration – based out of Daphne, Ala. – provided the Medical Arts Building with the AV equipment to accommodate eight clinical exam rooms and two simulator rooms.

Exam Rooms
The eight clinical exam rooms are setup to emulate a doctor’s examination room for use as a teaching tool to see students interact with patients. “They do 30-minute sessions twice a week and they wanted to be able to record each session so both students and professors can go back and watch them,” explained Daniels. “Each recorded session can be used for recording and evaluating student improvement, consistency and interaction with patients.”

These rooms are used primarily for practicing history, clinical and physical exams.

Dr. Judy L. Turner, D.O., chair of the Family Medicine Department adds, “The video capture allowed us [the faculty] to spread our resources a bit. We needed a way to test the students’ clinical and physical exam skills in an efficient, yet effective manner. Using the recordings, we can standardize the students’ results and eventually create a standardized patient program to review students for consistency.”

Each room is equipped with two high definition Vaddio WallVIEW HD-20 PTZ camera systems – one camera getting a tight shot of the patient on the examining table and another camera capturing a wide-shot of the entire room. “Each examination room is controlled from a single control room with three Vaddio ProductionVIEW Precision Camera Controllers connected to four quads, says Daniels. “So we get all 16 cameras on four 32-inch monitors with three controllers.”

Simulation Rooms
There are also two simulation rooms with Laerdal full-body simulator men for teaching students how to interact with patients in a realistic manner, explained Turner. “These rooms are used primarily for second year Clinical Sciences classes for Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training. Students use plastic models of breasts and pelvises – leading to eventual practice on their classmates. The simulation rooms are also available for community-based training and Turner is hoping to eventually start collaborating with the Joseph and Nancy Fail School of Nursing, also located on the WCU campus.

Each simulation room has five Vaddio WallVIEW HD-20 camera systems. “One camera is placed in the center right over the gurney,” explains Daniel. “And there are four more in each one of the corners of the room with presets – you name it – it’s the whole nine yards.”

Everything is being captured and recorded via DVR and is ultimately saved to the server or a DVD for students/professors to take home.

“This solution really gives the clinical faculty the time and resources to examine the students and not miss anything,” explained Turner. “It’s been extremely useful in helping to not only grade and evaluate students, but it really lets them self-evaluate and watch their patient experience.”

Draper Intros New Screen Surface Selection Tool

(Spiceland, Ind.) – When selecting a projection screen surface, there are many variables to consider, including screen gain, surface color and screen material. Matching up screen surface capabilities with room conditions can get complicated very quickly, but Draper Inc. has simplified the process with a powerful new Web tool.

Draper’s new screen surface selector takes into account variables such as projector brightness, light on the screen, projector location and specs and more to narrow screen surface choices to “good,” “better” and “best.”

“This new tool is unique to Draper and was entirely designed and developed in house. Our Quality Lab team performed numerous performance tests on each surface for gain, ambient light rejection, contrast, and more, all of which support the logic behind the tool,” according to Draper Advertising Manager Penny Sitler. “Members of our field sales staff provided real world input on the performance of these surfaces in a variety of settings, and our web development team spent many hours integrating the results into an easy-to-use and reliable selector.”

The new screen surface selector was developed using InfoComm standards as a basis for screen selection, and designed to be easy to use by people with basic or advanced AV knowledge.

Salt Lake City – September 26, 2012 – Mozaex(tm), the premiere manufacturer of multi-room Blu-ray entertainment servers, announced today it has completed a contract through its Integrator, Smart Design International (SDI), to deliver its media servers into a U.S.-sanctioned Department of Justice (DOJ) forensic lab project located in Medellin, Colombia. While best known for its award-winning residential entertainment media servers that support movies, music, and online media, Mozaex also has a long history of developing professional video servers for commercial applications.

The Mozaex server was specified, installed, and is being serviced by SDI, which is located in Miami with an office in Colombia. SDI is the prime contractor of this project and was selected for their unmatched capabilities to deliver a complete networked audio/video recording, storage, and indexing server solution.

The Mozaex 72 Terabyte RAID Server is being used for recording HD 1080p videos via HDMI, and playing Blu-rays and DVDs, that can be instantly viewed in multiple independent rooms via its Control4(tm) controlled, customizable Metadata Media Library.

After six months of testing, customization, and integration, the Mozaex system received final approval with a potential for at least 12 more systems in Colombia and the United States.

Mozaex Server Combines Networked Movie Server with Video Recording and Indexing Server

“Mozaex was selected for its breadth in both movie and video server products plus its knowledge and expertise in video and movie encoding that dates back to 1997 when the company’s founders released the first network video storage server called SuperVue,” said Mozaex CEO Douglas Kihm. “SuperVue continues to be used in many educational institutions, military facilities, and corporations.”

“The custom Mozaex system designed for the Department of Justice application uniquely combines multi-stream HD video and movie encoding, multi-room networking and storage, metadata editing, file indexing, and an elegant user interface technologies,” Kihm continued. “Many other applications are already being considered by medical facilities and other companies that are seeking a reliable and effective way to record, store, index, and playback HD videos in multiple rooms with up to 264 TBs of RAID 6 storage.”

The Mozaex Server Uniquely Records, Stores and Plays from Eight HDMI HD Video Sources

The Mozaex system installed includes four Mozaex servers with the combined ability to simultaneously record and store up to eight HDMI live video streams. Each Mozaex server incorporates two HDMI video recording inputs that can record video up to 1080p.

Each server can store locally up to 32TBs of RAID 6 or up to 40TBs of non-RAID media. The initial system was configured with 18TBs of RAID 5 storage per server. Networked Mozaex players provide playback media from any of the networked Mozaex servers.

The Mozaex system can support up to 25 simultaneous playback streams of movies and videos with up to 25 players over CAT 6 gigabit Ethernet. More than 25 independent playback zones can be supported with a higher speed network.

2012 AES Convention Preview NUGEN Audio Stand 512

NUGEN Audio at the 2012 AES Convention
At AES, NUGEN Audio will be displaying a range of industry-leading innovations for loudness correction that offer a smarter approach to meeting new loudness regulations and raising the quality of broadcast audio.

NEW — ISL: Inter-Sample True-Peak Limiter
The NUGEN Audio ISL inter-sample True-Peak limiter is designed for the control of peak levels in audio signals from mono through to 5.1. Unlike traditional approaches to limiting, ISL offers a true brick-wall solution, measuring inter-sample peaks and allowing the user to define the true-peak limit of the audio output — rather than the more traditional threshold control at which limiting begins to take effect.

Easy to use and totally transparent, ISL is based on the standardized true-peak algorithms of ITU-R B.S. 1770 and related standards, and is suitable for the control of audio for post-production and broadcast applications. Additionally, true-peak limiting can be used to ensure that downstream codecs such as mp3 and AAC do not introduce distortion into the signal. While ISL has been designed for limiting relatively dynamic high-quality audio, it can also be used to hard limit and reduce dynamic range considerably as required.

NEW — ISOSTEM(R): The Upmix and Crossmix Solution
NUGEN Audio has collaborated with signal processing equipment manufacturer DSPECIALISTS on the development of a software plug-in offering market-leading upmixing/downmixing between stereo and 5.1 surround. The plug-in will use the patented ISOSTEM(R) technology, believed to be the only upmix engine that is fully compatible with stereo, delivering a surround stem that downmixes exactly to the original stereo.

The availability of the crossmix technology in a plug-in will provide studios with a convenient and powerful software mixing tool to complement the ISOSTEM real-time conversion hardware.

NUGEN Audio will develop three versions of the plug-in, allowing audio professionals to produce a mix in the studio using a stereo mixing process, with the software automating the conversion to 5.1. An upmix plugin will provide pure upmix with flexible settings while the crossmix plugin provides upmix as well as downmix, and a third version will provide the extended functionality available in the ISOSTEM expert model.

VisLM: Visual Loudness Metering That Shows Exactly What’s Happening in a Mix
With detailed, objective loudness measurement, history and logging facilities, VisLM provides an easy-to-use ITU, ATSC, and EBU standard-compliant way to measure, compare, and contrast loudness during production, broadcast and post-production, on the fly or for entire sections of audio. Offering true-peak level metering (inter-sample accurate level monitoring); loudness range (to help decide if and how much dynamic compression to apply); momentary “instantaneous loudness” for mixing by ear; short-term loudness (3-second time window); and program loudness (long-term integrated loudness measurement); VisLM is a comprehensive tool that helps audio professionals cut through the complexity of loudness compliance.

Updates to VisLM being launched at AES include a dialogue gate option and a customizable sliding window feature. Additionally, VisLM will now be available in a 64-bit OS X(R) version.

VisLM is available in two versions: VisLM-C (compact) and VisLM-H (history), with both versions available in 2.0 and 5.1 formats.

LM-Correct: Integrated, Short-Term, and True-Peak Loudness Correction for Avid(R) Editors
NUGEN Audio LM-Correct is an audio suite plug-in designed to offer automatic, faster-than-real-time loudness analysis and correction within Avid(R) edit systems, including Media Composer(R), Pro Tools(R), and NewsCutter(R).

LM-Correct is ideal for rapid, intuitive correction in situations where time is limited, providing an automatic method of rapidly conforming audio to current loudness standards. LM-Correct can be used as a one-stop solution for loudness correction, fixing audio that has not been mixed with loudness standards in mind, or in conjunction with a real-time loudness meter such as VisLM to fine tune audio mixed to loudness requirements from the outset. LM-Correct can serve as a final “backstop” processor, ensuring that finished files are within specification and performing an in-place fix where errors are found.

LM-Correct can be used within a project to measure and correct audio without needing to leave the editing environment, enabling rapid in-place loudness normalization of mono, stereo or multi-channel audio. It is also possible to use LM-Correct within Avid batch processing for fully automated file handling.

LMB: Batch Processing Loudness Correction Tool for High Throughput Applications
The NUGEN Audio LMB system is an off-line file-based loudness analysis and correction program designed for rapid assessment and correction of files for loudness and true-peak content to ITU-R BS. 1770/1, ITU-R BS. 1770-02, and EBU R128-based specifications.

With a drag-and-drop interface and/or specific watched folders, LMB saves operator time by handling the process of checking and conforming files to multiple broadcast criteria automatically. LMB produces detailed post-mortem logs, includes a built-in graphing facility, and can be fully integrated into an automated system using the optional command-line interface and XML file output logs.
