Sound Devices Names Pat McConnell Sales Manager

Industry Veteran Brings More Than 20 Years of Experience to Company

REEDSBURG, WI, OCTOBER 2, 2012 — Sound Devices, developer of audio and video products for field production, is pleased to announce that Pat McConnell has been named sales manager. In his new position, Pat will work directly with the Sound Devices sales team to further promote the company’s entire range of audio and video products. In addition to driving sales initiatives, he will work to strengthen the Sound Devices reseller and distributor network. Pat is based at the Sound Devices office in Reedsburg, WI.

With more than two decades of experience in the audio and visual industry, Pat brings a strong background in live performance, systems engineering and production to Sound Devices. His consultative sales approach will help to further educate Sound Devices’ customers on the company’s products.

Prior to joining the Sound Devices team, Pat worked as a manufacturer’s representative with AudioBiz Incorporated, a Midwest U.S. representative of pro audio companies. During his 13-year tenure at AudioBiz, Pat received multiple national awards, including Salesperson of the Year from Shure Incorporated.

First starting out as a musician, he spent years performing professionally and taught recording technologies at an accredited Midwest media college. In addition to his performance career, Pat held several sales management positions in the Wisconsin area and also owned and operated PostScript Productions Incorporated, a regional sound company in Madison, WI.

MASQUE SOUND MAKES THE GRADE WITH CUSTOM AUDIO EQUIPMENT UPGRADE FOR AUDITORIUM AT NEW YORK CITY’S MS-223

Turnkey Sound System Provides Flexibility for The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology

BRONX, NY, October 2, 2012—As students arrived for their first day of the new school year at MS-223, also known as The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology, in the South Bronx, they were greeted by the site of the school’s newly upgraded auditorium. During the summer, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, completed the auditorium overhaul and installed new audio equipment for the nationally recognized school of excellence.

Contracted by Yorke Construction and working with acoustical design firm Akustiks, LLC, the team at Masque Sound provided a much needed upgrade to the old audio equipment in the aging auditorium. “Most of the existing AV gear in the auditorium was 10-15 years old and in bad shape,” says Matt Peskie, project manager, Masque Sound. “Certain aspects of the old system were broken and not properly maintained, or required a skilled operator who knew how to operate the equipment.”

Akustiks, LLC wanted to make sure the new system was simple to use, offering a turnkey experience for users, so they designed a Crestron TPMC-9 tilt touch screen as the core of the system. The Crestron touch screen features a generous 9-inch widescreen display and offers an easy-to-use interface for controlling all of the technology in the newly renovated auditorium.

Masque Sound installed an array of EAW speakers, a Panasonic PT-DZ6700UL projector, a Da-Lite Tensioned Large Cosmopolitan Electrol Screen, Listen Technologies transmitters and receivers, Audix microphones, a Clear-Com PS-702 intercom and all associated accessories.

“As soon as this project came up, we knew that we wanted Masque Sound to be involved in the installation of the AV system,” says Jordan Lytle, AV design consultant, Akustiks, LLC. “With a tight budget and short installation period, I knew that they would be able to efficiently manage and coordinate the installation. Masque Sound brought the highest quality products to this project – providing the kids with a great sounding system that is sure to last for ages to come.”

In addition to the audio upgrades, the MS-223 auditorium went through some significant cosmetic changes. Reflective tiles were taken down from the room’s back wall and replaced with sound-absorbent material, including some large fabric drapes. The auditorium received a complete paint job and some of the existing lighting was changed out. New scenery was brought in and the rigging grid was completely overhauled as well.

“This was a special project for a special school,” adds Peskie. “We wanted to make sure that we provided MS-223, a model of exemplary teaching and learning, with the technology to allow its students to explore their creative and artistic sides to the fullest. The auditorium went from an old, aging room to a great sound stage and was completed just in time for the new school year, which is a credit to all of the contractors involved.”

Located on the corner of 145th St. and 3rd Ave., MS-223 opened in September 2003. Since then, it has grown into one of the most popular and well-known middle schools in the entire Bronx.

Audio-Technica Holds Event with Parsons Audio at The Record Company in Boston

STOW, OH, September 27, 2012 — Audio-Technica, a leading innovator in transducer technology currently celebrating “50 Years of Passionate Listening,” recently held a product demonstration and networking event in Boston in collaboration with Parsons Audio on September 6, 2012. The session took place at The Record Company, a community-based studio committed jointly to the innovation and revitalization of youth music education and the advancement of independent record-making.

The event was a hands-on product demonstration featuring Audio-Technica headphones and microphones used in a mock session, such as ATH-M30 headphones, AT4047/SV studio microphone, AT4060 tube microphone, ATM450 instrument microphone, ATM510 dynamic vocal microphone and AT4081 bidirectional ribbon microphone, along with networking, raffles, catering and gift bags featuring Audio-Technica gear. In attendance were a number of students and young audio professionals, as well as personnel from Parsons Audio and The Record Company, Audio-Technica’s Roxanne Ricks and Doug Swan, and Bill House of Performer Magazine.

In addition to some smaller prizes, the Grand Prize Drawing was for a pair of ATH-M30 headphones, an ATM510 Microphone and six hours of studio time at The Record Company.

XPAND 3D Brings Artistic Visions to Life at San Sebastián Film Festival

SAN SEBASTIÁN, Spain – Reaffirming its 3D systems as the technology of choice for the most prestigious film festivals around the world, XPAND 3D provided a world-class 3D cinema system through regional partner Kelonik for the 60th San Sebastián Film Festival in San Sebastián, Spain.

This year’s San Sebastián Film Festival featured Dustin Hoffman, Tommy Lee Jones, Ewan McGregor, John Travolta Oliver Stone, Benicio del Toro, Ben Affleck and Catherine Deneuve receiving Donostia Awards. HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays and Premier Sound Services Add Spice to New Orleans’ ESSENCE Music Festival

NORTHRIDGE, California – Launched in 1995 by ESSENCE magazine, the ESSENCE Music Festival is a New Orleans celebration of African-American music and culture that showcases a variety of classic and contemporary artists. Premier Sound Services (PSS) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana brought in a bevy of HARMAN Professional equipment for the festival’s Coca-Cola and Verizon Superlounge stages, including JBL VERTEC® line arrays, Crown amps, Soundcraft mixing consoles and BSS, Lexicon and dbx signal processing.

The recent 2012 festival took place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and featured acts as diverse as Aretha Franklin, Keyshia Cole, Mary J. Blige, Gary Clark Jr., SWV, Dru Hill, the Stylistics and many more.

“This was a major festival and we brought in a major portion of our inventory,” noted Russ Bryant, Director of Operations and Co-Owner of PSS. “For both Superlounge stages, we had to stack the line arrays on top of the subs as flying was not feasible in the venue. Because the rooms were very wide and had relatively low ceilings and structural columns just on either side of both stages, for each room we put one stack on the inside of each column pointing directly forward and one stack outside of each column at 45 degrees.”

The Coca-Cola Superlounge featured four main speaker ground stacks of three VERTEC VT4888 midsize line array elements mounted on a VT4888-SF frame atop three SRX728S subwoofers. The speaker complement also included four VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements for front fill, four VT4886 and two VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers for side and drum fill, plus 16 SRX712M floor monitors. Thirteen Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amps powered the main line arrays, with nine I-Tech 8000 amps for the monitors. A 96-channel Soundcraft Vi6 console handled front of house mixing.

The Verizon Superlounge stage employed four ground stacks of four VERTEC VT4887A compact line array elements each, mounted on a VT4887-SF frame atop three SRX728S subwoofers. The system also included four VERTEC VT4886’s for front fill, two stacks of two SRX722 speakers and one SRX718S sub for side fill/drum fill, plus 12 SRX712M stage monitors. Main amplification was provided by eight Crown I-Tech 8000 amps, two I-Tech 4000 amps and one I-Tech 5000, with six I-Tech 4000’s driving the monitors. PSS also used HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ and JBL HiQnet Performancer Manager™ to set up and control both stages.

Soundcraft Series FIVE 48×4 and 52×26 consoles were used for front of house and monitor mixing, while the system utilized a host of HARMAN signal processors including BSS FCS-966 and FCS-960 equalizers, other BSS compressors and noise gates, a dbx 1046 quad compressor limiter and Lexicon PCM96 and other stereo reverb units/effects processors.

“I can consistently depend on JBL no matter what the situation,” said Bryant. “I have used JBL speakers since I got into the business in 1984. When we decided to purchase a line array system, we considered all the speakers on the market but decided that VERTEC best met our needs from a price/performance standpoint.”

“One day we’ll be hanging 16 VERTEC boxes per side in an arena and the next, stacking VT4888’s and VT4886’s in a club with a national touring band. While other speakers may work for one application or the other, we’ve found that our VERTEC inventory handles any requirement while delivering all the volume and quality we need. Also, since JBL introduced the VERTEC V5 DSP preset tunings, VERTEC has become even more rider-friendly.”

“In fact, we may be the most impressed by the VT4886,” Bryant noted. “We use them as front fills, side fills, drum fills and down fills under our VT4888’s and have even hung them 12 per side in smaller venues to do loud rock shows. It is the best-sounding, smallest, loudest box I have ever used. We have 40 in our inventory and plan to purchase more.”

“I also need to single out the Crown I-Tech HD Series amplifiers,” Bryant added. “We use a variety of models and they are simply amazing. No other amplifier is as accurate—we’ve scoped them and verified this against other amplifiers –and is as pleasing to my ear. The internal processing allows us to run the V5 presets, and I find that the speaker limiting is sonically more pleasing and protects our transducers better. They were a big part of the superior sound quality we achieved at the ESSENCE Music Festival.”
