With access to the SUR40, Almo Pro A/V partners can now bring an entirely new dimension of sharing, collaborating and exploration to commercial applications with the first large, thin display that recognizes fingers, hands and other objects placed on the screen.

To register for an event, go to www.almoproav.com/samsungSUR40.

Melody Craigmyle, vice president of marketing for Almo Professional A/V said, “Because the SUR40 technology is so unique, we felt that it was extremely important to bring local training to our partners. This road show makes it as easy as possible for them to become certified experts on the SUR40, which can help create limitless new business opportunities.” Craigmyle added that participating partners will receive an exclusive offer to purchase an SUR40 demo unit from Almo Professional A/V at 50 percent off MSRP.

“The Samsung SUR40 Certification road show is a great way to explore the potential of this new and compelling interactive display solution, and continues our efforts to support channel partners through comprehensive training to keep them abreast of emerging technologies and trends,” said Richard Hutton, director of channel marketing at Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division.

About the SUR40
The SUR40 is designed especially for use in hospitality, retail, education and finance applications. It can recognize unique optical tags and detect physical objects placed on its surface, such as room keys or a retail item which then trigger a response. Applications can be installed on the SUR40 that will allow it to share information from Internet and Bluetooth technology devices, while allowing content to be dropped and dragged from the device to the SUR40 surface. And, it can recognize and react to more than 50 points of contact simultaneously, to allow multiple people to collaborate and connect.

The SUR40 can be used as a table, mounted on a wall or built into a custom fixture to increase interactivity. With HD quality and four built-in speakers, the visual and sound quality provide a fully immersive experience.

The Microsoft PixelSense vision-based technology is what enables the touch and object recognition capabilities of the SUR40, so applications respond to tagged objects and people’s fingers. The SUR40 also features powerful computing, blazing speed, and quick and simple multitasking with fast and powerful graphics. It can be customized to exactly fit the specifications of the organization. And its four USB ports allow for content to be limitless and for peripherals such as scanners, video cameras and printers to be attached, creating an even more powerful business tool.

Golden Gate Bridge Celebrates 75th Anniversary with DPA Microphones

San Francisco Artist Bill Fontana Calls on DPA 4006A Omnidirectional Microphones for a Live Video and Sound Portrait Honoring the Landmark

SAN FRANCISCO, OCTOBER 10, 2012
– The iconic Golden Gate Bridge turned 75 this year, and DPA Microphones is supporting local San Francisco artist Bill Fontana in honoring the landmark’s anniversary. With a video camera and seven DPA Reference Standard 4006A Omnidirectional microphones affixed to the bridge, Fontana is streaming and capturing six months’ worth of sound and footage for a live video and sound portrait titled “Acoustical Visions of the Golden Gate.” He also relies on a Sound Devices 788T multi-track digital audio recorder to capture the audio.

Fontana, who commemorated the landmark’s 50th anniversary in similar fashion, has been a long-time DPA Microphones advocate. He selected the highly praised DPA Reference Standard 4006A for the 75th anniversary project for its true-to-life sound reproduction and its ability to withstand all San Francisco weather conditions.

“I think DPA microphones are world-class, so that’s the first place I go when I need to record something,” says Fontana. “One of the reasons I chose the 4006A is that it is one of the only great studio condenser microphones that can also live out on the Golden Gate Bridge for half a year. It is a pretty robust microphone and has a great sound.”

The versatile DPA 4006A is the most popular DPA microphone available and is used worldwide as a recording standard. The unit boasts total transparency in any recording situation, and can pick up incredible detail and depth of sound. With the 4006A, everyone from broadcasters to musical engineers can use the microphone, which produces a clean, natural and precise reproduction in a variety of applications. These features made the 4006A an ideal option for Fontana, who needed to simultaneously stream and record the audio for “Acoustical Visions of the Golden Gate.”

For the times when Fontana is recording, he utilizes a Sound Devices 788T, which is the perfect partner to any DPA microphone for on-location recording. The recorder’s plug-and-play capabilities are the ultimate pairing with the DPA 4006A, as each of the DPA microphones’ multi-pin connectors break into clearly labeled XLRs, which can be simply plugged into the Sound Devices 788T. With the different monitoring functions on the 788T, Fontana can pinpoint what channel he wants to listen to while still recording.

For video streaming and capture, Fontana installed a camera at Fort Point, a historic property owned and operated by the National Park Service, located on the southern side of the Golden Gate Bridge. His project, “Acoustical Visions of the Golden Gate,” is being featured as part of a larger exhibition known as “International Orange.” Named for the color of the paint used on the bridge, the exhibit offers fresh perspectives on the enduring landmark. Located at Fort Point, the show features new works by contemporary artists who are responding to the bridge as an icon, historic structure and conceptual inspiration.

HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 Console is Easy as ABC for Jacksons Unity Tour

(Left) Norman Swisher, Head Audio Tech at the Borgata in Atlantic City, with Shannon Austin.

POTTERS BAR, United Kingdom — America’s musical first family The Jacksons has reunited for the 2012 Unity Tour, the Jacksons’ first concert tour of the US in almost 30 years. The Jacksons Unity Tour brings together Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon Jackson to celebrate the remarkable musical heritage of the Jackson 5 and to honor the spirit of Michael Jackson. The Unity Tour features the brothers performing beloved hits like “I Want You Back,” “I’ll Be There,” “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” “The Love You Save” and many others, with plans for a live concert album and DVD to follow.

Veteran tour sound pro Shannon Austin is handling front of house duties for the Unity Tour and chose a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 digital live sound console after an auditioning process that wasn’t exactly as easy as ABC. “At first, another manufacturer’s console I won’t name was being forced on me, and I didn’t like it,” said Austin. “For a historic tour of this magnitude, I didn’t want to settle or compromise. After all, you’re talking about a group and individuals who have sold hundreds of millions of records whose songs are part of the very fabric of American pop music. I had also tried other brands of consoles and none of them impressed me as much as the Soundcraft Vi6.”

“I’d already used the Vi6 with two other clients, Jay Sean and Martha Munizzi, and the thing that jumped out at me the most was the sound quality,” Austin noted. “In both cases, the desk performed beyond my expectations. I called Tom Der at Soundcraft, told him I wanted a Vi6 for this tour and he was able to make it happen.”

“I’m using the Vi6 in a standard configuration for the tour—64 inputs and 32 outputs on the stage rack,” Austin continued. “The local rack is also pretty straightforward and adds 16 more line inputs in addition to AES and MADI connections.”

One of the many aspects Austin likes about the Vi6 is its configurability. “You can customize it to be the way you want it with the Vistonics™ II touchscreen interface and the user options on the input section,” he said. “It’s like designing your own configuration based on your workflow. Compared to other digital desks, the Vistonics screens make setting up the console a breeze, as well as making any needed tweaks during a performance.”

“Also—and this is something that more and more people are paying attention to—the Vi6 has a really good internal word clock,” Austin added. “The quality of a word clock is absolutely essential to a piece of digital equipment’s sound quality, and the depth and width of the sonic image you can achieve.”

“Another big part of the reason the Vi6 sounds so good is that it has Studer ‘guts’ inside,” Austin concluded. “I’ve worked with Studer equipment as well as Soundcraft in the past and the fact that the two companies share technologies is a big plus in my book. If you were to ask me what three things set the Soundcraft Vi6 apart from other consoles, I would answer: Sound quality! Sound quality! Sound quality!”

Vista Spyders Support Jay-Z and Pearl Jam at Made In America Festival in Philadelphia

There were Spyders in the house at Budweiser’s Made In America Festival in Philadelphia on Labor Day weekend, and the 100,000 or so people who turned out to hear Jay-Z and Pearl Jam were glad they came. Austin-based J3 Productions LLC, a leader in multi-source and destination management for corporate events and large-venue live entertainment, selected Vista Spyders to pixel map LED content and handle live background media on the main stage during the two-day concert series on Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Jay-Z headlined the first night of the Made In America festival performing for 90 minutes before a crowd estimated at nearly 50,000; Pearl Jam led off the second night with a two-hour set for fans. The festival benefited United Way.

A long-time Spyder user, J3 didn’t think twice before choosing the system for the media-rich main stage. “Spyder is the most powerful and versatile high-resolution pixel mapping system on the market today,” declares J3 applications engineer John Mims III. “We have been using Spyder since 2006 and have been on the cutting edge of this technology evolution.”

J3 deployed three Spyder X20 1608 systems running in parallel to meet the challenge of mapping over 1,700 LED panels that formed the backdrop for the main concert stage and to handle the live background media displayed. “Spyder was a great choice for its mapping and live control abilities,” says Mims. “By running the three systems in parallel we could map the outputs to LED processors to create one virtual image. A total of 12 media servers were used to stream content through the Spyders to paint one very large contiguous image at 11520×2160 resolution.”

The LED panels were configured as a pair of tall vertical panels that flanked the stage and sprouted upswept wings evoking the iconic symbol of America – and Anheuser-Busch’s (Budweiser) eagle logo. A thin ribbon of LED panels also ran across the top of the stage. The LEDs displayed IMAG and other graphical images that lit up the night and supported the powerful musical performances on stage.
