Red Bull Uses Vizrt for Live Graphics as Felix Baumgartner Breaks Sound Barrier

The edge of space was where Felix Baumgartner stood Sunday, October 14 2012. At 39km or 128,100ft, already setting a world record for highest manned balloon flight, Baumgartner leaned forward and rapidly disappeared from camera view.

9 minutes later Felix Baumgartner was on the New Mexico desert ground, fists in the air in triumph. His decent set additional world records for becoming the first skydiver to break the speed of sound, reaching a maximum velocity of 1,342km/h (833.9mph), and the record for highest ever freefall.

The entire event was broadcast live on youtube.com where another record was broken for simultaneous views. More than 8 million viewers watched the descent through youtube’s streaming service. The event was broadcasted by 77 stations across 48 countries around the world.

All the graphic content for TV and for live stream was provided by Vizrt Technology. The joint team of Vizrt and netventure personnel, represented on site by Yan Heydlauf of Vizrt South West Europe and Stefan Meyer of netventure Germany, gathered live data from capsule telemetry, mission clocks, chest pack information, bio-meds and other mission information in Red Bull Stratos Mission Control in Roswell, New Mexico. All data for several websites were fed by web services provided by netventure using data centers in Germany, Austria, Ireland and the US.

The team used Viz Graphic Hub’s shared memory to distribute content simultaneously
between New Mexico and the Red Bull Stratos studio at Servus TV in Salzburg, Austria. A Viz|Trio operator simply called up “pages” in a Viz|Trio show while the content was constantly being updated live using scripting and Viz Graphics Hub shared memory maps. Three Viz Engines, Vizrt’s real-time 3D compositing engine, were used to display the on-air graphics and video compositing. At Servus TV, netventure film Austria, which has been in charge of live graphics services for two years, used the same Viz|Trio show to broadcast this successful event. The several Viz|Trio systems were used to display on air graphics and all the studio monitors.

“Red Bull has been an exciting partner for us to work with over the last few years. From the Red Bull X-Fighters to this amazing jump, they are constantly pushing the limit and bringing us fun new challenges.” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, CTO Vizrt. “We congratulate Felix for this landmark accomplishment.”

BTX Ensures Patrons at Yavapai Casino Never Miss a Play With Sports Select Wireless Tabletop Speaker Systems

Sports Select TOUCHDOWN! Starter Kit Provides Customers With High-Quality Audio for Televised Games in Cantina Bar and Casino Floor

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. — Oct. 23, 2012 — BTX Technologies, a value-added distributor and manufacturer of interface, integration, and system products, today announced that the company has supplied Yavapai Casino in Prescott, Ariz., with a Sports Select TOUCHDOWN! Starter Kit to provide high-quality audio for games playing on eight different displays.

The Sports Select wireless tabletop speaker system broadcasts up to 16 channels of digital 900-MHz audio from a bar or restaurant’s displays to rechargeable tabletop speakers. Users simply choose which display they want to listen to at their table and the sounds of the game immediately come to life.

The Cantina bar, which is located on the Yavapai Casino property, is equipped with Sports Select wireless tabletop speaker systems with upgraded transmitters featuring remote antennas so that customers can take the audio action with them on to the casino floor.

“Before the Sports Select system, customers in our Cantina could only listen to games on three displays that were tied into our ceiling speakers,” said Ryan Tyson, support technician for the Yavapai Gaming Agency. “Our goal was to not only add value to their experience by providing convenient access to audio from any of our eight displays, but to utilize the same solution to give customers another reason to play in our casino. With the Sports Select system, our patrons don’t have to miss a play, no matter where they are on the property. They simply check out a tabletop speaker and tune in to the game of their choice.”

Easy to install and maintain, the Sports Select TOUCHDOWN! Starter Kit consists of six transmitters offering simple integration with satellite, cable boxes, or displays; twelve speakers; and two charging trays. Instead of the standard starter package transmitters, the Yavapai Casino upgraded to Sports Select’s transmitters with remote antennas, allowing them to extend the transmission distance of the transmitters and use the tabletop receivers from anywhere in the casino. An additional two transmitters were purchased to accommodate all eight TVs in the Cantina.

The Sports Select rechargeable speaker is portable, compact, and can operate all day on a single charge. For Yavapai Casino’s patrons, the 4.5-inch by 8.5-inch speaker offers excellent localized sound quality, built-in volume control, and a channel selector. The compact Sports Select charging tray is table-top or wall-mountable, and can charge six units at a time. In addition, speakers can be charged with an optional power supply.

“BTX really went above and beyond to meet our needs for this project,” added Tyson. “To extend the tabletop speakers’ range to the casino floor, the company upgraded our transmitters. We’ve received great feedback from our customers in terms of ease of use and sound clarity. And now that football season is under way, the speakers are getting checked out at such a high rate that we are already considering purchasing more.”

Martin Audio OmniLine: Perfect Solution For New Spanish Congress Palace

–Adagio Pro Provides Design Support For Geometrically Challenging Main Hall–

The Congress Palace (Ciudad de Oviedo) recently opened in the heart of Spain’s Asturian capital and has already become the newest symbol for its spectacular architecture.

Designed by Valencia-born architect Santiago Calatrava, this visually stunning exhibition and convention center has left its own indelible footprint on the local landscape.

Set on three floors, and elliptical in shape, the 50, 951 square foot Congress Palace consists of several different function room and exhibition spaces — but without doubt the most spectacular is the main auditorium. This unusually shaped 8,202 square ft. hall has a seating capacity of 2,144 seats, with a height of 149.6 feet up to the dome.

With the complex geometry (and high reverberation time) of the room, the choice of sound system was critical—and after an extensive study of electro-acoustic systems the decision was taken to specify an OmniLine® micro array system from Martin Audio.

According to Marc Rovira, product manager at Adagio Pro, the Martin Audio distributor in Spain, given these challenging conditions, it was logical to propose a system with a large coverage control pattern, especially in the vertical plane, to achieve optimum intelligibility.

Thus two hangs of 24 OmniLine elements, with a 9.25 ft. drop have been flown on either side of the stage.

Rovira and the project manager of Adagio Pro, Bernat Camacho, knew that given the micro size of OmniLine, the array would provide a perfect and discreet solution. Each module measures just 9.6 x 4.5 x 7.8 inches and weighs just 9.9 lbs., with drivers and mechanical alignment techniques purpose designed by Martin Audio for this product. Up to 32 modules can be interconnected and in many cases just one amplifier channel per array is required, while the system achieves high levels of SPL and delivers unprecedented vertical accuracy.

However, in this instance the installers MEDIACOM 95 and GMI preferred to divide each column of the array into three zones or channels of amplification to produce a higher level of control in the audience. Processing was carried out in a Martin Audio DX2 4 in/8 out DSP environment, which manages the different levels and equalization of each column.

Camacho, supported the installation every step of the way, initially presenting a 2D model using OmniLine’s own software, before constructing a 3D visualization using EASE software, in order to study the coverage throughout the room and the predicted levels of intelligibility.

The full integration of the audiovisual systems was implemented by MEDIACOM 95 and GMI with the final tuning and commissioning carried out with the engineering team of Adagio Pro. The result is a loudspeaker solution of high quality, which is impressively discreet at the same time.

Darrell Webb Band Gets Picking With DPA Microphones

Bluegrass Group Relies on DPA d:vote and d:fine Mics for Pure Sound and a Completely Wireless Experience

NASHVILLE, OCTOBER 23, 2012 – Whenever the Darrell Webb Band bluegrass group performs live, it’s sure to be a raucous, high-energy set. While Webb belts out songs and plays the mandolin, his band mates’ strum their instruments at a frenetic pace around him. To keep this momentum going, the band employs DPA Microphones d:vote™ 4099 instrument microphones and d:fine™ headset microphones, allowing its members to go full throttle during shows, without the hindrance of bulky gear while providing superior sound quality.

Webb was the first member of the band to use DPA microphones, having employed them since the band formed three years ago. Last year, he and the rest of the group began using the d:vote 4099s for each of the instruments played in the group. Impressed with the level of precision of the audio, the band members soon added the d:fine headset mics to their mix. The band members chose to have all microphones arranged in a wireless setup, which gives them the flexibility of movement and ability to put on lively performances that are typically associated with a bluegrass band.

“The d:vote and d:fine mics give us the complete freedom to do whatever we feel like doing on stage, including walking out to the crowd if we want to,” says Jeremy Arrowood, the bass player for the Darrell Webb Band. “The clarity of the mics has also stepped our musicianship up, allowing the personality of our instruments to really show through. You just can’t beat the sound. We’ve received so many compliments on the sound of our instruments; it’s just a great feather in our cap. Now, when we perform at venues that don’t have the ability to support our DPAs, it feels like torture.”

Based on DPA’s award-winning 4099 series, the d:vote 4099 instrument microphones feature supercardioid polar patterns for highly uniform off-axis frequency response and superior gain-before-feedback. Capable of handling high sound pressure levels these microphones live up to DPA’s pedigree of breathtaking clarity and natural sounding richness. Capable of accurately capturing the true voice of acoustic instruments, all d:vote 4099 condenser microphones reject unwanted noise and the enhanced shock-mount design and extendable gooseneck provides stable positioning. The additional option of detachable cables in varying lengths, make the d:vote highly flexible for all live performance applications. The mics can easily be unclipped and repositioned or moved to another instrument with only one hand. d:vote’s microphone mounting system is designed to be extremely gentle, never marring the finish of an instrument.

Despite its tiny, discreet size and lightweight design, the DPA d:fine is rugged and stable, while still being versatile. The line of headset microphones combines absolute pristine audio quality with unique and simple mechanical solutions alongside an extensive accessory line. Ergonomically designed to adjust to fit the user’s ear and head easily and seamlessly, it also mounts securely, with minimal visibility. The microphone is available in several colors as omnidirectional or directional and in single- or dual-ear varieties
The Darrell Webb Band performs traditional bluegrass music in the vein of Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Dierks Bentley, Doyle Lawson and Ken Mellons, among other greats. Known for its electrifying sets and the high-tenor vocals of Webb, the band features Webb as the lead vocalist and mandolin player, Arrowood on bass, Jared Hensley singing baritone and playing guitar, Jake Joins on the Dobro resonator guitar and Chris Wade on banjo. Webb is famous for his version of the Stanley Brothers tune, “Little Maggie,” which can be found on his “Live at Bellamys CD” as well as “Smash Hits of Bluegrass Vol. 1.”

The group was nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Emerging Artist of the Year Award and will soon release a new album, titled “Breaking Down the Barriers,” on which it used the DPA microphones. It also used the microphones during performances recorded to DVD, planned for upcoming release.

The band’s IBMA performances include the Rhythm Showcase on Tuesday, September 25 at 7 p.m. at the Earnest Tub Record Shop, the Darrell Webb Band Showcase and CD Launch on Wednesday, September 16 at 11:30 p.m. at the Grand Master Fiddle Championship and an appearance at FanFest on Saturday, September 28 at 3:15 p.m.

Sound Devices’ New 664 Production Mixer Makes Pro Audio Debut at AES 2012

Flagship Mixer Features an Unprecedented Amount of I/O Connectivity and Recording Flexibility

SAN FRANCISCO, OCTOBER 23, 2012 — Following its recent international introduction at IBC 2012, Sound Devices’ 664 Production Mixer will make its first professional audio debut at AES 2012 (Booth 934). Sound Devices, experts in audio and video products for field production, has designed the 664 to build upon the powerful features of the company’s best-selling line of field and production mixers. This new flagship mixer offers expanded input/output connectivity and recording capabilities, along with greater flexibility and ease-of-use. Its six input channels have dedicated controls for trim, fader, pan and PFL. The inputs and four output buses are all recordable, for a total of 10 tracks of recording.

The 664 contains six ultra-low noise, high-dynamic range and transformer-less preamps, which accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, input trim control and direct outputs on every channel. Featuring full analog audio paths for high-performance audio and superb power efficiency, the 664 also has numerous digital capabilities. Inputs 1 and 6 can be selected as AES3 or AES42 inputs for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking.

The analog output compliment includes four output buses. The L and R buses are on balanced XLR, 10-Pin and TA-3M connectors; unbalanced on TA-3M or 3.5mm connectors. Secondary output buses X1 and X2 are available on balanced TA-3M connectors. Inputs and buses can be routed to four AES3 connections for eight digital outputs on the XLR and 10-pin connectors.

The 664 can record up to 10 tracks of 16- or 24-bit broadcast WAV files to SD and/or CompactFlash cards. All inputs and outputs are individually selectable for recording, enabling the mixer to record all 10 channels of audio. With its dual card slots, content can be recorded to either or both cards simultaneously, with the added ability to assign different tracks to each memory card.

The 664 includes a high-precision, Ambient-based time-code generator/reader for multi-camera and double-system sound applications. All common production time-code rates and modes are supported.

Sound Devices also introduces a companion accessory, the CL-6 Input Expander, for the 664 Production Mixer. It is designed specifically to add six analog line-level inputs to the mixer. With the CL-6 attached, the direct output connectors are available as inputs, controlled by faders located on the CL-6 front panel. The CL-6 also offers additional LED output metering and duplicate-recording transport controls. With the 664 Production Mixer connected to the CL-6 Input Expander, users can now record all 12 input channels and four outputs, for a total of 16 tracks.

The 664 features an abundance of connectivity options in addition to the main audio I/O, catering to the complex productions becoming more common today. It has expanded return-monitoring capabilities, with three separate camera returns as well as a dedicated private-line communications connection. The 664, like the 552, has a built-in slate microphone and tone oscillator, and includes a dedicated input for an external slate mike. The internal or external slate mike can be routed to either outputs or to the dedicated comm output. The 664 can easily build a private-line communication with a comm return input, separate from camera returns.

“Our customers are looking for more inputs, connectivity, flexibility and power in the field,” says Jon Tatooles, managing director, Sound Devices. “We have taken the strengths and knowledge gained from our existing mixer line and continue to evolve the technology to meet the growing needs of sound mixers. The 664 is how we see the future of high-performance field mixers; they need to have recording capabilities in order to be a fully functional tool in the field.”

Sound Devices’ 664 features an intuitive LCD menu enabling users to simply adjust input settings. It also offers the capability to see how an input is routed and connected when its settings are altered. The LCD display also allows users to quickly activate the individual tracks that are to be recorded. The Sound Devices 664 features dedicated front panel controls for gain, trim and faders, as well as full-size XLR connectors. The mixer is powered by five AA batteries or external DC power.

The 664, like all Sound Devices products, is designed to withstand the physical and environmental extremes of field production. Its top and bottom chassis panels are made from molded, metalized carbon fiber for superior durability and weight reduction. The chassis panels are also gasketed for water resistance.

TV2 East of Denmark Expands its Horizons With HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 M2 Console

(Left to Right) Peter Holmberg Pedersen; Tonni Manum; Kasper Thor Larsen

VORDINGBORG, Denmark — In a move to bring its audio capabilities to the cutting edge, regional broadcaster TV2 East of Denmark recently purchased a 32-fader HARMAN Studer Vista 5 M2 digital mixing console for its studio in Vordingborg. The console was supplied by Studer’s Danish distributor Danmon.

TV2 East is primarily using the Studer Vista 5 M2 console for news (TV2 East broadcasts four news shows each day) and sports programming, along with regional talk shows and documentaries.

According to Kasper Thor Larsen, Head of Technology at TV2 East, the station was looking to upgrade to the latest and most sophisticated audio equipment. “We had a Yamaha PM1D console but it was time to replace the board,” he said. “So we have been researching and found Studer to be the best fit.”

The reasons for Studer being the best fit, Larsen continues, are multiple. “We wanted a true broadcast-quality audio board and we get that from Studer for sure,” he said. “This Vista 5 console has the best audio quality I’ve heard from a broadcast console, and its redundancy was another major factor in our decision. It’s very flexible and it can be easily configured to our needs.

In addition, the ability to control and automate the console via the EMBER protocol played a big factor in the decision process. For some applications, the console will be controlled from TV2 East’s Ross Overdrive automation system. The console will also work as an audio router and format converter in TV2 East’s infrastructure, giving them a simple and economic solution.

“The integration of Studer VISTA FX by Lexicon is also a perfect match for our requirements and gives easy control of the sophisticated effects in a very cost-effective way,” Larsen noted.

Larsen and his team also cited the Vista 5 M2’s TFT metering system as an attractive feature. This meter bridge is capable of displaying signal levels from mono through to 5.1 channels on each input, with a configurable lower area which can be used to display bus assignments, sound images or the unique History mode, where a scrolling audio waveform displays signal anomalies and highlights them for up to 50 seconds to allow the engineer to identify where the event occurred.

“Our audio team also found the console very easy to use,” Larsen said. The Vistronics™ control surface is a very nice way to build an audio board. The controls are simple to use and the entire operation is very intuitive. The possibilities are endless. This is the new world!”

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG, Harman Kardon, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon and Mark Levinson. Bose® PowerMatch™ 8500/8500N Configurable Power Amplifier Selected for Large-Scale Installation at The Villages Golf Community in Central Florida

The Villages and other projects benefit from the Bose PowerMatch PM8500’s Class-D efficiency and up to 4 kW of pure, clean power

Framingham, Massachusetts, October 18, 2012 – Some projects are inarguably massive. They cover an enormous amount of ground and need the power to deliver music and other critical audio across areas measured in acres instead of square feet. That’s why AV systems integrators are turning to the PowerMatch™ PM8500 from Bose Professional Systems Division . Such is the case with a recent audio systems project where power, reliability and sound quality are critical across very large amounts of space, and the Bose PowerMatch amplifier is proving to be the best choice.

The Villages is a master-planned retirement community located in central Florida about midway between Ocala and Orlando, with a population of over 90,000 residents living on over 26,000 acres. With a focus on golf – boasting 504 holes, on both executive and championship courses, including courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Nancy Lopez. Installing landscape sound for The Villages is a big job – the new downtown area, Brownwood, has 240 light poles, each will have Bose® DS 40SE full-range, surface-mount loudspeakers mounted to them. All of these will be powered by just six Bose PowerMatch™ PM8500/8500N amplifiers, covering an area up to a half-mile in all directions from the town’s central square. In addition to the PowerMatch PM8500, the area also includes Bose Panaray® MA12EX full-range modular line array loudspeakers and MB24 modular bass loudspeakers for the town square’s live stage for music performances, as well as 12 Bose ControlSpace® ESP-88/ESP-00 engineered sound processors, digital signal processors to control audio throughout The Villages. Going forward, Bose PowerMatch amplifiers will also be used in a forthcoming movie theater in the downtown area and other applications.

“There’s really no place like it on the planet,” says Steve Brown, Eastern Regional Business Manager, Bose Professional Systems. “And just as The Villages are all about quality of life, they are a whole community built around Bose audio because Bose is all about quality of sound. The Villages are about great golf as far as the eye can see and great sound as far as the ear can hear. It’s an amazing project, and the Bose PowerMatch offers them the ability to power a huge amount of sound over an enormous amount of space and do it cost effectively.”

The Bose PowerMatch PM8500/8500N is a configurable professional power amplifier delivering concert sound quality for fixed installation sound reinforcement systems. Building on the ruggedness proven by 20 years of experience building Class-D power amplifiers for the automotive market, the PM8500/8500N adds numerous new Bose patented technologies to simultaneously provide class-leading power, efficiency, sound quality and reliability.
