Pacific Wild Monitors Whale Behavior with Barix IP Audio Solution

Non-profit conservation organization depends on reliable, high-quality audio streams from Barix devices to study humpback whales in their natural setting off the Canadian coast

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, October 23, 2012 — Audio over IP pioneer Barix AG is well-known for supplying one-way and two-way audio solutions for broadcast radio, entertainment, in-store media, security and transportation applications. Scientific audio is a lesser-known application from Barix — but one that non-profit conservation organization Pacific Wild has found clear benefits from using.

Dedicated to protecting Canada’s Pacific coast, Pacific Wild has deployed audio monitoring stations at four points along the British Columbia shoreline to capture live sounds of humpback whales in their natural marine environment. The monitoring stations use rugged “hydrophones” — microphones designed for underwater listening and recording — to capture whale audio and other sounds of the ocean in high quality.

Barix Instreamer IP audio devices encode the captured sounds live and stream the audio 24/7 over the internet to Pacific Wild offices, allowing Pacific Wild employees, scientists and wildlife enthusiasts to study and learn from the behavioral patterns of humpback whales — and how surrounding activity such as shipping activity affects their behavior. According to Rob MacKenzie, a freelance IT engineer working with Pacific Wild, the Barix solution has significantly raised live audio quality from the hydrophones. MacKenzie was brought in to “bring the technological level up a few notches” and improve the end-to-end system. The previous audio system recorded 8-bit audio at 8kHz, which made it challenging to capture clear sound. The Barix solution digitizes the hydrophone-captured audio into 16-bit MP3 for the best signal integrity and compatibility.

“I was tasked with rebuilding the entire system,” said MacKenzie. “I put up a new Linux recording system, added new monitoring systems, improved network availability and rebuilt the power systems for all the enclosures. But the Barix Instreamer has been instrumental to our research. We’re capturing everything from loud identification calls to soft back-and-forth chatter. Just being able to record those very soft sounds proves the bit depth and audio quality we get from Barix.”

MacKenzie noted that while there are a number of research stations for whale behavior in British Columbia, there has been a gap in the central coast area that Pacific Wild is now covering. Pacific Wild expects to expand to 12 sites over the next five years, using Barix to encode and stream all live audio.

“There is a lot of research going on with humpback whales, including male song and how it changes across large geographical areas,” said MacKenzie. “We can monitor how one whale will start singing a slightly different song, and how it is passed along to other whales. We’re also studying how ambient underwater noises and shipping traffic affect their behavior and ability to communicate. The Barix devices, in addition to providing audio, help us perform measurements, create graphs and understand trends related to all these sounds.”

MacKenzie adds that the Barix Instreamer has been extremely reliable, with relatively no setup process beyond assigning each device an IP address. The devices are bolted into protective, solar-powered enclosures installed off the shoreline and out in the wild, built to withstand the icy blasts of wind and year-round moisture associated with the harsh regional climate.

“The Barix encoders spit out data constantly and consistently as long as the radios are up,” he said. The complete, end-to-end network includes 802.11 microwave radios to deliver the live Barix stream from the remote locations to Pacific Wild headquarters.

AES Convention Heyser Lecture By JJ Johnston

“Audio, Radio, Acoustics and Signal Processing – The Way Forward

SAN FRANCISCO: An innovative and highly respected pro audio doyen James D. “JJ” Johnston, will present the 133rd AES Convention Heyser Lecture. Scheduled for Saturday evening, Oct. 27 from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the Moscone Center. Dr. Johnston’s lecture is entitled “Audio, Radio, Acoustics, and Signal Processing – The Way Forward.”

This presentation will explore the current understanding of human auditory perception, and reveal how the way we actually work encourages a dichotomy of knowledge that no longer exists. Dr. Johnston will propose educational methods designed to amalgamate artistic and technical approaches; and techniques for applying some of the technical expertise we’ve acquired on the artistic side in order to better understand what the artistic side of the business needs and desires.

Currently an independent consultant, JJ Johnston recently retired from his position as Chief Scientist for DTS, Inc. In that role, he contributed to a variety of acoustical modeling, preprocessing and post-processing algorithms for audio capture, analysis, control, and presentation. He served in a similar capacity at Neural Audio, and as an Audio Architect for the Codecs, Core Media Processing, and Video Services Groups of Microsoft Corporation. He previously worked with AT&T Labs Speech Processing Software and Technology Research Department. And, with AT&T Bell Laboratories’ Acoustics Research and Signal Processing Research Departments.

ADAM Audio Targets Wide User Base With New F Series Monitors

San Francisco, CA––At the 133rd AES Convention, ADAM Audio is introducing the F Series professional monitors with signature tweeter technology that provides unsurpassed performance at the most accessible prices in the company’s history.

The new F Series consists of the F5 and F7 nearfield monitors and SubF dedicated subwoofer. The F5

The F7
The F7 continues ADAM’s most popular configuration using technology that makes it affordable to the widest range of users. The SubF
A small yet powerful subwoofer, the SubF features a robust 8″ woofer with driven by a 150W (rms) PWM (pulse width modulation) power amplifier. The amp stays cool while handling maximum power levels, even when sustained. Several controls to adjust the subwoofer are located on the rear panel: a volume knob (-∞ to +6 dB), a control for the crossover frequency, and a phase switch. The SubF is an ideal match for both the F5 and the F7 monitors wherever a deeper and more powerful bass response is required.

Inputs & Controls
Several controls provided to adjust the F5 and F7 monitors to the environment are located on the rear panel: 2 room EQs for the high (>5kHz) and the low (<300Hz) frequencies as well as a volume knob (-∞ to +6 dB). In addition, there is an 85Hz high pass filter to facilitate the use of a subwoofer. There are both XLR combo (jack) and RCA connectors on the rear panel as well.

All F Series products will be available in the United States in January 2013.

According to NanoLumens Director of Marketing, Josh Byrd, the São Paulo Metro Line 4 installation is the largest project undertaken to date by the pioneering Georgia-based company that introduced the world to flexible LED displays in 2010. “São Paulo’s Metro Line 4 is full of next generation technologies, and NanoLumens is proud to provide the most dazzling digital displays in the world to give advertisers a powerful medium to share their messages. Metro Line 4, also known as the Yellow Line or ViaQuatro, is the result of a strategic partnership between the Government of São Paulo and ViaQuatro®, a private company that has invested $450 million in the project to date, with expectations to invest a total of $2 billion over the next 30 years of operation. The line began offering service at six stations in 2011 with 14 trains, and full operation of all 11 stations and 15 additional trains is expected in 2014.

Metro Line 4 is Latin America’s first driverless subway line and points to the future of fast, efficient, autonomous public transportation in one of the world’s most populated metropolitan areas. Each train is remotely controlled by a human operator at the line’s Operational Control Center (OCC). The trains, which are manufactured in Korea, offer passengers a comfortable commute with a number of LCD displays, air conditioning, free passage between cars while in motion and low noise operation.

Community Brings Custom Sounds to New York’s Trendy Z Hotel

 

Long Island City, NY, October 2012… New York is the city that never sleeps, and the tiny island of Manhattan has never been able to contain the city’s buzz. Just across the river, hip new neighborhoods spring up like dandelions – once-gritty enclaves like Williamsburg and Bedford-Stuyvesant are now home to the trendy elite. As locals are fond of pointing out, these areas have one thing Manhattan lacks: breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline.

New York’s newest peripheral gem is Long Island City. Just a subway stop away in Queens, this aging warehouse district is now abuzz with nightlife, eateries, and fashionable hotels.

And the Z Hotel is a prime example: within months of its grand opening, the hotel boasts a 90 per cent occupancy. This former factory has been redesigned from the ground up, with chic décor from its airy rooftop bar to the intimate basement lounge and restaurant. Both venues feature sleek sound systems designed and installed by El Media Group, a Manhattan-based company that provides high-end boutique hotels and restaurants with both custom music and the sound systems to accompany it.

The rooftop lounge area is served by more than a dozen Community WET Series W2-218 all-weather two-way systems. “We opted for the WET Series mainly for their weather resistance,” explains El Media’s Andrew Mitchel. “But we were pleased to find that they have a nice tight coverage pattern as well. Even though the rooftop is 20 stories up and there are not a lot of immediate neighbors, we wanted to make sure that there wasn’t a lot of sound spilling over into the neighborhood.” Lab Gruppen C-Series amplifiers power the system.

Community’s VERIS Series covers the downstairs restaurant and lounge. The basement venue is outfitted with a distributed system featuring Community VERIS 26 two-way, dual 6-inch full-range systems, with VERIS 212S dual 12-inch subwoofers for added low-end punch. The loudspeakers are powered by Lab Gruppen C- and FP-Series amplification, with Symetrix Jupiter DSP providing system drive and processing.

“It’s a pretty nice sounding space,” says Mitchel. “It’s not very wide, but the room is pretty friendly – not a lot of parallel walls or reflective surfaces, plenty of soft seating and cushions, and the ceiling’s not too low like a lot of basement spaces. It’s a nice looking place too – they’ve opened up a large part of the space to the level above, so they’ve got a lot of natural light coming in. It’s a really nice room, and the VERIS speakers sound great in there.”
