Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800 Fixtures Join Peter Gabriel’s Nostalgic Back to Front Tour

photo: Todd Kaplan

Pop legend Peter Gabriel gives a rare glimpse of his nostalgic side in his new Back to Front Tour, which recently opened in Quebec City with a full performance of his classic 1986 album, “So.” Many aspects of the show hark back to the past, and lighting and show designer Rob Sinclair is using Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800 fixtures in an application employed 25 by him years ago.

Gabriel wanted to bring back some of the elements from the tour that launched “So,” including camera booms with lights mounted on the end, one boom for himself and one for each of the original touring band members who have reunited with Gabriel: bassist Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes, drummer Manu Katche and keyboardist David Sancious.

“We brought the technique up to date by having five manually-operated camera booms with three Alpha Spot QWO 800 fixtures on each of them,” says Sinclair. “They pretty much carry the show: The show is about those booms and the lights on them.”

photo: Todd Kaplan

Clay Paky’s Alpha Spot QWO 800 uses the latest MSR Platinum lamp, an 800W light source that produces an intense sparkling light – brighter even than older 1200W lamps. The Alpha Spot QWO 800 is equipped with optical features placing it at the top of its class, including a very wide zoom range from 7.6º to 55º, a uniform beam distribution at all zoom angles and a unique Stay-Sharp-Zoom feature that locks images in focus while zooming.

Sinclair selected the Clay Paky luminaires after conducting a test earlier this year. “I wanted something that was bright and had a wide zoom on it so when it was on the floor it would light Peter,” he explains. “In the shootout we were looking for a combination of brightness, zoom angle and weight: The lights have to be counter-weighted with four times the weight on the back of the booms. The QWO’s delivered the perfect combination of brightness and weight, and I preferred the zoom on them. The brightness carries to the back of the arena when they’re zoomed in and when they’re zoomed out they can be a foot away from Peter.”

The show is broken into three sections with part three being the complete performance of “So.” “So” is being reissued on October 22 in an extensive boxed set, which includes a making-of documentary and book. The stand-alone re-mastered album will also be released on the same date.

Sinclair reports that the Clay Paky QWO 800s are “working really well. They are an impressive light. I’m very happy with them and the decision to run them.”

Prism Sound Launches Lyra – A New Audio Interface For The Studio Producer, Musician and DJ Market

Internationally renowned manufacturer Prism Sound is bringing its high performance audio technology to an even wider audience with the launch of Lyra, a brand new family of interfaces aimed at musicians, composers, project studio owners, DJs, re-mixers and other audio content producers such as radio and podcasting. It is also anticipated that high-end home audio enthusiasts will find the USB interface and stereo configuration with digital volume control an attractive package.

Lyra, which will make its debut at the 2012 AES Convention in San Francisco, is based on the award-winning and critically acclaimed Orpheus interface. With Lyra, music recording professionals can access the power and sophistication of the Orpheus audio path and clock circuitry, but in a smaller package and at a much improved price point.

“Lyra connects seamlessly with both Macs and PCs via a simple USB interface,” says Graham Boswell, Sales and Marketing Director for Prism Sound. “For recording professionals who don’t need eight channels of analogue I/O, Lyra is the perfect interface because it allows them to access Prism Sound quality in a convenient package and at an affordable price.”

Prism Sound, which plans to launch a number of different variants of Lyra, has started the ball rolling with Lyra 1 and Lyra 2. Both incorporate new ARM Cortex-based ‘Xcore’ processor design offering class-compliant USB interfacing, plus DSP and a low latency ‘console-quality’ digital mixer for foldback monitoring. Both products also have optical SPDIF capability and Lyra 2 also supports ADAT.

Lyra 1, which retails at £1,349 plus VAT, will be of particular interest to the musician and project studio market. This unit offers two analogue input channels – one for instrument/line and one for mic/line – plus two DA output channels and optical-only digital I/O. With Lyra 1, musicians can connect a guitar and a microphone through the input channels, plug into their software mixer via a simple USB connection and start laying down basic tracks in a matter of minutes.

Lyra 2, which retails at £1,849 plus VAT, takes the concept a little further by offering two AD input channels with switchable microphone, instrument or line input modes and four DA output channels. Both optical-only digital I/O and copper S/PDIF are available on this version of Lyra, which also offers wordclock In/Out enabling synchronization with other digital devices.

Both products are ergonomically designed to look as good as they sound. The front panel has a master volume control assignable to selected output channels, while the unit’s small size – just 11 inches wide – makes it very easy to transport for musicians, producers and DJs on the road. For studio use, Prism Sound can supply dedicated rack mounts as an extra.

“We know there is a market for Lyra because our customers have been demanding this product ever since we launched Orpheus,” Graham Boswell adds. “However, we are very protective of our reputation for delivering the highest possible audio quality so we were not going to bring any product to market until we were 100% convinced that it could live up to our exacting specifications. Lyra does just that, and we are very proud to introduce it.”

Lyra will start shipping in November 2012 and will be fully supported by Prism Sound’s acclaimed technical and after-sales service staff.

Idol Puerto Rico Starts Second Season with Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Console

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Idol Puerto Rico is a reality television competition seeking to find the next best solo singing talent. Sound familiar? That is because it is part of the Idol franchise, based on the British TV show Pop Idol and the U.S version American Idol all created by Simon Fuller. Now In its second season, Idol Puerto Rico made its debut in August 2011 and has recently added a spin off entitled Idol Kids Puerto Rico.

Ricky’s Audio Corporation of Arecibo, PR handles audio production for the show, and has supplied a new Yamaha CL5 digital audio system for the live mix to direct TV audio feed. Idol Puerto Rico is performed and transmitted live every Monday from the 1,900-seat “Centro de Bellas Artes de Caguas” theater. The audio system is distributed in three main locations: the TV broadcast room which houses the new CL5, the performance stage where two Yamaha RIO-2416 remote I/O boxes reside, and the front of house and monitor system that includes a Yamaha M7CL digital console with three Dante-MY16-AUD cards and two Cisco Gigabit switches.

A long-time Yamaha console provider, Ricky’s first mixer was a Yamaha MC1604, followed by newer analog and digital mixers, including the 01V96, LS9, and M7CL-48. “There were many factors that contributed to our decision to purchase a CL5,” states Néstor J. Heredia,
Executive VP/Electrical Engineer, Ricky’s Audio Corporation. “The most important factor was knowing that Yamaha mixers are widely accepted and present on almost all riders, which makes the CL5 ideal for our rental inventory since most engineers will immediately feel familiar with it. Another important factor in our decision to purchase the CL5 was the ability to use a normal Ethernet cable as a transport for the Dante network along with the flexibility this protocol has to offer.”

“The Yamaha CL system sounds amazing,” says Heredia. “I am a real big fan of the sound of the PM5D, and I like the sound of the new CL Series even more.”

University of North Texas Students Produce New Sitcom with Hitachi Z-HD5000 HD Cameras

WOODBURY, NEW YORK – Hitachi Kokusai Electric America, Ltd., today announced that Radio-TV-Film students at the University of North Texas (UNT) in Denton, Texas used four of the department’s six Hitachi Z-HD5000 HDTV studio production cameras to produce three half-hour episodes of an original sitcom, “Peppuccinos.”

The sitcom—created and produced by Noah Sargent while an undergraduate senior in the spring of 2012—takes place in a shop that offers coffee on one side and pizza on the other, hence the name “Peppuccinos.”

Sargent and fellow radio-TV-film students volunteered their time to tackle every aspect of the demanding multi-camera production—including scriptwriting, manning cameras, technical directing, lighting design, audio recording, and music composition. They also had help from UNT theater students who lent their acting talents to bring the project to life while cameras rolled before a small studio audience.

“This was one of the most ambitious projects we’ve attempted, and the results were impressive. Were it not for the quality of these Hitachi cameras, we probably wouldn’t have attempted this,” said James M. Martin, a senior lecturer at the University of North Texas and technical supervisor of the sitcom. “The Hitachi cameras produced excellent HD image quality, and the students were able to ‘dial in’ the exact look they wanted because the camera shading controls were so easy to use.”

All six Hitachi cameras—purchased through Hitachi dealer Burst Communications in Houston—are outfitted with Hitachi CU-HD500 camera control units (CCUs) and RU-1000VR remote control panels.

“Producing these sitcom episodes put our students in a real-world, multi-camera television environment where they could really apply and refine the skills they learned in class,” said Martin. Prior to the “Peppuccinos” project, UNT students primarily produced newscasts, such as “The NTTV Nightly News,” a daily, half-hour news report featuring field reports via Skype; elections coverage for broadcast by local cable systems; as well as a Spanish language program. UNT has won several “Lone Star Emmy Awards for Excellence in Student Broadcasting” and other awards.

This student-driven sitcom production maximized UNT’s video facility resources, especially Studio A where the “Peppuccinos” set and risers for up to 35 audience members were constructed. The larger of two UNT studios, Studio A has an adjacent control room that houses a Ross Vision-M 1.5-M/E multi-format switcher, Compix Synergy 2 dual-channel HD graphics system, Blackmagic Design Videohub router, and a 360 Systems HD Max server.

“Since we installed six Hitachi Z-HD5000 HD cameras in 2010, we’ve transitioned to a fully digital, HD-SDI workflow that helps make the most of the high-quality imagery these cameras capture,” Martin said. “As a university facility, we need to stretch our dollars as far as they can go to provide our students with the best possible studio production experience, and Hitachi enables us to do that.”

The three “Peppuccinos” episodes were staged and recorded in one weekend, and that video is being edited by students using Apple Final Cut Pro. When finished, the shows will air on North Texas Television, a local origination channel devoted to UNT programming that is offered by the local Charter cable system, as well as on UNT’s website.

“This was a unique project that brought two UNT departments together—Radio, TV, Film and Performing Arts,” said Martin who collaborated with UNT Theater Professors Adam Chamberlin and Mario Tooch. “Based on the success of these three episodes, we’re looking forward to offering more multi-camera production projects and classes where students can obtain valuable skills and academic credit. Our goal is to prepare our students for the media jobs of the 21st century by giving them training they can’t get anywhere else.”
