THE HÅLOGALAND THEATRE UPGRADES WITH DPA

The Hålogaland Theatre in Tromsø, Norway, is putting its new DPA d:fine™ Headset Microphones through their paces on a production of Les Misérables, which opened on September 6th 2012.

The theatre has replaced its old stock of DPA 4060 omnidirectional miniature microphones with 40 directional d:fine Headset Microphones and 40 d:fine omni microphone booms, which are being used with a new 32 channel Shure Axient wireless system. The microphones were supplied by sound company Lydproduksjon Tromsø AS, in conjunction with DPA’s Norwegian distributor Lydsystemer.

Jim Oddvar Hansen, Head of Sound at the theatre, says: “The new d:fine Headset Microphones replace a selection of DPA 4060 miniature microphones that we had had for some time. As our previous experience with DPA technology had always been good, it made sense to upgrade using the same manufacturer’s products.”

Jim Oddvar Hansen adds that the d:fine headset microphones were chosen because they offer the latest technology and are also very comfortable for performers to wear.

“The microphones stay in place even with theatre productions like Les Misérables that include dancing and running about the stage while singing. This was a major consideration when it came down to our choice of headworn microphones – we needed something that not only offered exceptional sound quality but was also durable and practical. The DPA d:fine fits all these criteria.”

The Hålogaland Theatre, the regional theatre for Troms and Finnmark, has also invested in 40 DPA omni microphone booms, which are less sensitive to handling noise and to wind, blows and pops.

“We felt that omni microphones would give us the best sound quality for musical productions,” Jim Oddvar Hansen adds. “Also, having both long and short booms provide maximum flexibility and makes it possible to use the microphones on children, or to hide them underneath costumes.”

The Hålogaland Theatre’s production of Les Misérables stars some of Norway’s most talented artists and will run until 28th of November 2012.

Sennheiser HD 700 Headphones and Neumann KK 204/205 Wireless Microphone Capsules Each Nominated for TEC Award

Audio specialist Sennheiser announced that its HD 700 headphones and the Neumann KK 204 and KK 205 wireless microphone capsules have been nominated for the 28th Annual TEC awards. Sennheiser’s HD 700 headphone, which has been nominated in the new ‘Headphone/Earpiece Technology’ category, is an open, dynamic stereo headphone combining high-end sound with an innovative headphone design. The cardioid KK 204 and supercardioid KK 205 capsules, which have been nominated in the ‘Microphone Technology/Sound Reinforcement’ category, are fully compatible with Sennheiser’s 2000 Series wireless handheld transmitters.

Presented by the TEC Foundation, the TEC Awards is the pro audio industry’s most prestigious awards show honoring outstanding achievement in product innovation and sound production. The 28th Annual TEC Awards will be presented during the 2013 NAMM Show, to be held in Anaheim, Calif. in January 2013. The nominations, based on product entries by audio manufacturers, were made by a select panel of 130 professionals in numerous audio specialties. Products and projects released and in commercial use during the period of September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012, were eligible for nomination.

Greg Beebe, president of Sennheiser USA, commented: “We are pleased that both Sennheiser and Neumann have once again been nominated for an Outstanding Technical Achievement Award by the TEC Foundation. Both the HD 700 headphone and the Neumann KK 200 Series capsules are best-in-class products, representing the pinnacle of premium sound and innovation.”

HD 700: A Wide Sound Stage with an Ultra-Fast Response
The HD 700 open, dynamic stereo headphone joins Sennheiser’s series of acclaimed audiophile headphones. A patent-pending vented magnet system manages air movement beneath the diaphragm, providing clean, controlled dynamics with ultra-low total harmonic distortion. An angled transducer design and a vibration dampening chassis offer audiophiles and mastering engineers outstanding spatial imaging without artificial coloration.

KK 204/205: Uniform over the Entire Frequency Range
The Neumann KK 204/205 microphone capsules were designed to complement Sennheiser’s renowned 2000 series wireless transmitters. The acoustic features of the KK 204 and KK 205 capsule heads are derived from the multiple award-winning wired Neumann stage microphones, the KMS 104 and KMS 105. The KK 204, with its cardioid pattern, ensures the best possible suppression of sound originating from 180 degrees to the rear, while the supercardioid KK 205 has greater directivity, and maximizes incident sound from the front as compared to sound from the rear. Due to the “single polar pattern design,” the polar patterns are very uniform over the entire frequency range and provide excellent resistance to feedback.

Christie Nitro Solutions Add Bite to Discovery Channel’s Shark Week 25th Anniversary Celebration

The Christie® YK200 dual-arm yoke was part of the recent 25th anniversary celebration of Shark Week, the popular Discovery Channel program that details the lives of one of nature’s most intriguing and feared predators. Attended by press, producers and friends of the network from around the world, the festivities took place at the Beverly Hilton hotel poolside.

Part of the Christie Nitro Solutions family of moving digital luminaires, the Christie YK200 featured an installed Christie Roadster HD20K-J 3-chip DLP® projector displaying moving sharks in the pool while six Christie Roadster S+20K 3-chip DLP projectors displayed images of the imposing creatures on a large wall.

“The six Christie Roadster S+20K projectors created a 1:3 blend that was then stacked for double brightness,” said Joel St-Denis, product manager, Christie. “A Christie YK200 yoke with a Christie HD20K-J projector was used to move sharks around the entire pool, achieving with a single projector what would normally require several projectors.”

Designed for staging and event applications, Christie Nitro Solutions offers three yoke models to choose from. Each yoke provides a platform to move and control a variety of Christie video projectors via DMX protocol – allowing integration of lighting equipment and video projectors easily with the same control console. These versatile yokes can be flown, rigged or set up at floor level, according to application needs.

“The reason that I love [Christie] Nitro is because it moves a 20K projector,” said Bart Kresa, principal, BARTKRESA Design. “And in this event … in order to do this across the whole pool, we probably would have had to set up six 20K projectors. With the [Christie] Nitro, we can use one projector and then create an animation. When we move the animation and the projector around, it looks natural. The sharks are moving around the pool but it sort of gives the sense that the whole pool is filled with an image.”

Contributing to the success of the ‘Shark Week’ display provided by Nitro Solutions was the Pandoras Box media manager and server, which, according to Jared Leunis of coolux® Media Systems managed the movement of the Christie YK200 yoke and the sharks’ movement throughout the pool.

“Five years ago, doing something like this was quite a bit more difficult because we had to measure and calculate everything, and everything had to be very, very precise,” concluded Kresa. “The cool thing about the new technology is that working with digital projectors and with digital tools, we can pre-design everything.”

Solving the Security Problem Facing Government Desktops

Advanced KVM Technology Protects Government Desktops from Cyberthreats  - http://bit.ly/NSKqzS

VNM100312 – Over a three-year period, government agencies reported a 400-percent increase in attempted incursions into federal systems – demonstrating that cyber attacks on government systems are increasing at an exponential rate. While there is no current data on the number of attempts to compromise intelligence and defense computer systems, they are no doubt under similar stress as foreign governments, terrorists, and malicious hackers target classified data and government documents, attempt to shut down networks and destroy valuable infrastructure, and steal intellectual property.

Firewall protection alone is not enough to deter sophisticated cyber threats. One of the least understood and most under-utilized preventative measures for thwarting attacks is the use of keyboard-video-mouse (KVM) switching devices that allow government employees to switch between networks with various security levels from one desktop. Cyber attacks from within an agency need to be as rigorously addressed as those originating from outside sources. However, government purchasers of KVM products need to thoroughly vet the security features, design, manufacture, and even the packaging of any product before trusting a deployment in any areas that require high security.

To learn more about securing government desktops from cyber threats with secure KVM, read the whitepaper: http://bit.ly/NSKqzS.
