XPAND 3D’S NEW PASSIVE SYSTEMS RESET EXPECTATIONS IN SPECTACULAR FASHION!

DEAUVILLE, France – In a move to provide cinema industry professionals with more quality and choice than ever before possible, XPAND 3D — the leader in multidimensional imaging and pioneer of active shutter technologies — today introduced a new passive solution that delivers performance, comfort and commercial versatility to new, broader markets. The new XPAND Polarizer and Color Spacer passive systems will feature stunning new glasses that are lighter, more ergonomic and certainly more stylish than anything on the market today.

Commenting on the announcement, Maria Costeira, Chief Executive Officer, XPAND 3D noted, “XPAND 3D is singularly committed to advancing the consumer experience of multidimensional imaging and whereas our active shutter technologies are deployed by the world’s leading cinemas and for the studios’ most important premieres, we recognized that a sizable market was being under-served with sub-par passive technologies. Recognizing that only passive technology could meet the commercial needs of this group, we elected to design a superior solution that would elevate the performance threshold of passive 3D. I am thrilled that our new XPAND passive systems exceed all expectations on price and performance.”

XPAND 3D passive glasses reflect well on the theater and make for a more comfortable viewing experience. The new XPAND Infinity glasses are high-end 3D glasses, which provide the brightest, most vivid and realistic 3D images available. XPAND Infinity glasses are also optimized to work with laser projectors, making it the optimal future-proof 3D system. The glasses are available in adult and children sizes.

All new XPAND cinema systems and glasses fully support HFR (High Frame Rate) double and single flash at 96fps, 120fps, 144fps, 192fps, 240fps and even variable fps. The Infinity 3D glasses provide up to 38% transparency and a 3000:1 contrast ratio. The glasses’ lightweight ergonomic designs ensure long-wearing comfort, and their wide 3D viewing angle provides an optimal 3D image across the entire cinema.

XPAND offers a wide range of high-end IR systems that cover spaces from 10 to more than 5,000 seats. The XPAND Polarizer 3D system, a cost-effective 3D cinema solution using high-quality disposable circularly polarized 3D glasses and active projector polarizer with full support of all HFR formats. The system works with all digital cinema projectors and requires the usage of a high-gain silver screen. Due to the high gain screen usage, the XPAND Polarizer system is recommended only for cinemas that are used exclusively for 3D movies. Hybrid cinemas that are used for both 2D and 3D movies are recommended not use silver screens, due to the viewing zones and hot spot problems.

XPAND 3D Color Spacer is a passive, color wavelength-based 3D cinema solution. XPAND Color Spacer uses two cinema projectors, a matt white screen and reusable passive Color Spacer glasses. This solution is specifically designed for special venues that want to use passive glasses with a matt white screen. The system is recommended only with extra bright projectors due to the light output limitations of color wavelength filtering.

XPAND 3D systems are installed in cinemas worldwide, with 70 percent of the 3D cinema market share in Asia and more than 50 percent in mainland Europe. XPAND 3D glasses and systems are the default choice for VIP theaters, studio screening rooms, celebrities’ home cinemas, government presentations and high-quality 3D presentations. XPAND 3D is the official partner of the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival, and is used for the biggest 3D Premieres globally.

“There is no question that active shutter technology provides the optimal visual experience,” Costeira added. “But in many cases our customers have a stratified approach to offer ‘good,’ ‘better’ and ‘best theaters based on price and performance criteria. They have come to rely on XPAND 3D for technology and service at the ‘better’ and ‘best’ and have asked us to develop a solution for the broader entry level. We waited until a time that we could make a quantitative difference in the passive experience and yet do so at a price that would work. I believe we have achieved this dual goal in spectacular fashion!”

Inside Columbia Magazine Installs ELAN g! System To Gain Total Control In Kitchen

When Fred Parry, publisher of Inside Columbia magazine, was looking to enhance the publication’s in-house cooking class, Culinary Adventures, he wanted his chefs to have instant control of the live video camera so they could easily manage how the classes are presented to attendees. While planning their new state-of-the-art kitchen classroom, Parry asked the custom installation team at D&M Sound if there was a control system that would give his chefs complete control of the kitchen and provide fast, simple control of the audio, video, lighting, HVAC and surveillance systems. D&M rose to the challenge by equipping the new kitchen with an ELAN g! Entertainment and Control System that gives the staff the ability to control everything with the push of a button!

With the ELAN g! system the staff can now easily control the camera that films live culinary details and display the video feed on three flat screen TVs that hang above the kitchen. The cameras serve double duty when classes are finished, providing 24/7 security and monitoring for the expensive professional-grade kitchen. Each ELAN g! audio zone can play audio from CD players, iPods, traditional radio, TV or computers. The system also allows the chefs to direct the live audio from their microphones to any or all of the audio zones. The g! system is easy to use and can be accessed from anywhere in the world using any laptop or iOS or Android mobile device.

“Inside Columbia was looking for a system that would not only give them total control over every aspect of the kitchen, but would also be easy to learn,” said Anne Moore, owner of D&M Sound. “We knew right away that the ELAN g! system was the perfect choice. The simple-to-use interface allows the chef to have complete control over the production of the class, so that when he’s teaching a class, he can use one of the 8 camera presets to personally choose the camera angles and decide when to zoom in on the food.”

The system uses the ELAN HC8 controller, one ELAN NWA 18 network router and switch, one ELAN M86 6-zone audio controller, four Paradigm speakers and a Xantech video distribution amp used to feed the three TVs. The chef’s counter features a custom set of buttons that allow the chef to control the movement of the overhead camera, and two wireless microphones allow the audience to clearly hear the cooking presentation.

Parry demoed a number of control systems before eventually deciding that the ELAN g! system offered everything he was looking for. “We were looking for a system that could offer close-up shots of what our chefs are doing with their hands, as well as a number of other key shots during the classes,” said Parry. “Our goal was to give our cooking class participants a ‘front row seat’ in the kitchen, and the ELAN g! system allowed us to accomplish that. Other systems we looked at didn’t even come close to offering that level of versatility or flexibility.

“The g! system has significantly increased the production value of our cooking presentations. Our guests can now watch our chefs cook on crystal clear monitors that we can easily control from an iPad. I would highly recommend the system to anyone who has a similar need for total control. There’s a big ‘wow’ factor in our ELAN system and we couldn’t be happier with it.”

The ELAN g! Control System provides users with the most uniform and intuitive icon-based control from their favorite devices including TVs, touchscreens, touchpads, PCs, iPhones and iPads. The standardized interface works across platforms, so that the trendy g!Mobile app users love on the iPhone appears and works similarly on ELAN touchscreens, valets and handheld remotes as well as users’ televisions and mobile devices. And the system’s IP backbone makes it just as easy to control the system from across the room – or across the globe.

Individual “apps” for each subsystem allow the user to control security, climate, lighting, media, irrigation, pool/spa, messaging, video and photos with the flick of a finger. Access is fast and secure through any ELAN home interface or globally with mobile Internet enabled devices like the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Netbooks and PC Tablets. Since the intuitive interface empowers users with personalized scheduling and detailed history views, high consumption subsystems like lighting and climate can be closely monitored and managed for a greener lifestyle – and substantial energy savings.

Kramer CORE™ Products at Heart of San Antonio Main Event Entertainment™ Complex

Main Event Entertainment Complex Debuts All−Digital AV Infrastructure

The newest Main Event Entertainment™ complex in San Antonio, TX, boasts the company’s first center with a fully digital AV infrastructure, and it is powered by Kramer Electronics CORE products.

The complex, which features bowling, laser tag, obstacle courses, arcades, pool tables, rope course and food and beverage offerings all under one roof, has integrated a completely digital sight and sound experience into the building. Designed and installed by SAVE Electronics, a local professional electronics design and integration company, the San Antonio site features 35 big screen TVs ranging in size from 47− to 70−inches, as well as 11 WXGA projectors. Bowlers in the 22−lane bowling alley enjoy programming on 11 screens that span two lanes each. Music videos, advertising and programming are transmitted from six digital satellite receivers, six digital signage PCs, and five laptop connections.

According to Tim Boyd, owner of SAVE Electronics, building an all−digital system required switching equipment that could both handle the heavy source volume and be expandable for the future. “No one had a big enough switcher that would send video from the satellite receivers to all the TVs. Kramer was the only one that could handle it at the resolution we required,” Boyd said. “The system lets us send anything, anywhere throughout the building.”

Clint Hoffman, vice president of marketing for Kramer Electronics, noted that the Kramer CORE products were ideal for the Main Event Entertainment application. “The CORE products are designed to be complete end−to−end solutions − − they handle any Pro AV signal type and allow for easy future expansion,” he said.

The system features two Kramer Electronics CORE VS−3232D matrix switchers, each of which can be populated with boards up to four inputs or four outputs per board. The Main Event system in San Antonio is populated with a total of 12 HDCP compatible DVI input cards and 12 HDCP compatible DVI output cards, making it capable of distributing 48 sources to 48 displays. Forty Kramer PT−571 and PT−572 DGKat™ technology twisted pair transmitter/receivers for HDMI signals, six Kramer TP−581T and TP−582R HDBaseT™ transmitter/receivers for HDMI signals, and six Kramer WP−121 and TP−122 wall plate transmitter/receivers for computer graphics video signals convert the various sources to HDMI for long−distance routing around the facility. Six Kramer VP−434 ProScale® Digital Scalers and 20 Kramer VM−2HXL 1:2 distribution amplifiers for HDMI signals are used to scale the video to a uniform resolution and distribute it to every display. A Kramer VS−1616A 16×16 audio matrix switcher handles the audio signal routing in the system.

The system also uses Kramer Electronics power supplies, rack mounting kits and over 16,000 feet of Kramer DGKat™ cable. The switchers and sources are all housed in a dedicated control room on the building’s second floor.

Main Event Entertainment officials say they plan to upgrade and retrofit the company’s other locations to completely digital AV entertainment systems.

Christie Digital Cinema Projectors Screen World Premiere of Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” in Brilliant 3D at New York Film Festival

A Festival Sponsor, Christie is Among “The Brightest Stars” of NYFF Opening Night Celebrations.

The highly anticipated world premiere in 3D of Academy Award® winning director Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” was projected at Alice Tully Hall this weekend using acclaimed Christie Solaria digital cinema projectors as part of the 50th Annual New York Film Festival opening night celebrations.

'Life of Pi' lead actor Suraj Sharma (l.) and director Ang Lee at the New York Film Festival.

'Life of Pi' lead actor Suraj Sharma (l.) and director Ang Lee at the New York Film Festival.

Preferred Christie dealer Digital Media Systems selected and installed two powerful Christie CP4230 DLP Cinema projectors and synchronized their images on screen to meet the demands of the festival organizers, who required double the brightness levels of typical 3D presentations to more accurately depict Ang Lee’s epic 3D film, a fantasy about a boy stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. The film kicked off the prestigious festival, setting the tone for the scores of other screenings and special events on tap, including workshops and panel discussions, many of which will feature today’s most influential filmmakers and industry leaders, from September 28 through October 14.

In addition to Alice Tully Hall, the festival is utilizing other venues on the Lincoln Center Campus, including the Walter Reade Theater, and the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, which includes the Francesca Beale Theater, Howard Gilman Theater and the Amphitheater.

“We are pleased to be a sponsor of the New York Film Festival,” said Craig Sholder, vice president, Entertainment Solutions at Christie. “As the undisputed leader in digital cinema with the largest number of digital cinema installations worldwide, Christie has earned a solid reputation as an industry innovator whose groundbreaking technology has revolutionized the digital cinema landscape. It’s our privilege to ‘play’ the premier venue at the New York Film Festival, and to be in the excellent company of some of the most creative and visionary filmmakers of our time.”

Gregg Paliotta, president and owner of Digital Media Systems, noted that festival organizers have worked with him in the past, and so placed complete trust in him to provide them with the best digital projectors available to meet their needs. Representing 20th Century Fox, which is distributing the film and is also a Festival sponsor, Paliotta selected the Christie CP4230 projectors for their exceptional performance on the large screen. The two-projector system helped deliver an unprecedented level of brightness, image clarity, and realism.

“They wanted the most reliable, most powerful projection system in the industry to achieve the higher level of brightness required for the 3D ‘Life of Pi’, ensuring the visual impact that
Ang Lee sought to bring his cinematic vision to life,” he said. “There was never any doubt in my mind that Christie was the only one that could meet such a challenge in terms of image brightness, while still maintaining deep color saturation and razor-sharp resolution. Christie was a huge success last year when I used them for the advance screening of Martin Scorsese’s highly acclaimed film, ‘Hugo,’ and I was confident that Christie would again surpass all expectations this year.”

Paliotta added: “The feedback from the audience was remarkable. The picture was visually stunning. Everyone was beyond blown away by how it looked. Without a doubt, it was a fantastic screening and an unforgettable evening.”

Ventuz Guides a Virtual Dive at Expo 2012 in Yeosu Korea

German Pavilion Wins Gold Award for “Best Content Implementation” of Event Theme

Ventuz Technology, provider of high-end 3D graphics software technology played an integral role in the interactive content display for the award-winning “Seavolution” German pavilion at the World Expo Yeosu Korea 2012. The Ventuz software suite was used by German-based multimedia agency Deutsche Werbewelt to create large scale interactive installations that demonstrated an animated voyage of discovery beneath the ocean.

“The Living Ocean and Coast” was this year’s Expo theme, where more than 100 countries and international organizations were invited to communicate and demonstrate their ideas for balancing the preservation of ocean and coastal areas with economic development. The next World Expo will be held in 2015 in Milan, Italy.

“Seavolution” (“Sea” and “Evolution”) presented by Germany, consisted of three exhibition areas: “Coasts,” “Biotope,” and “Treasure chamber.” The technologically sophisticated exhibits ranged from environmentally-friendly ships, tidal power stations, tsunami early warning systems, waste in the sea, overfishing, to the wealth of resources found on the bottom of the ocean. The German Pavilion at Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea was organized by the HMC on behalf of the BMWi. The concept for content design was provided by the working group facts and fiction GmbH and GTP Architekten. For more information, visit http://www.expo2012-deutschland.de.

Deutsche Werbewelt utilized Ventuz to plan, produce, create, and develop a variety of graphical and content-rich visualization applications that guided visitors at the Expo through interactive touch-screens, as well as dynamic presentations of a number of scientific oceanic evolutions. At the heart of the entire set of highly immersive experiences was the Ventuz software suite, a feature-rich solution that not only provided Deutsche Werbewelt with the production toolset, but also enabled visitor browsing and touch-screen interaction, as well as multi-dimensional and multi-layered content.

“For many years Ventuz has been our number one choice for creating interactive applications,” commented Dennis Presche with Deutsche Werbewelt. “It allows us to work extremely fast and adjust to the customer’s needs and wishes in the most flexible way. Therefore it was the perfect tool for a project of this size and versatility. There are no limits to our creativity with Ventuz.”

Due to the overwhelming creativity and popularity of “Seavolution,” the Yeosu Korea organization committee awarded the German pavilion with the Gold Award for the “best content implementation” of the event’s theme.

Used throughout the live presentation and broadcast markets, the Ventuz software suite is considered one of the most innovative solutions available today. It specifically addresses the challenges creative agencies are facing in keeping up with the technological and presentation needs of customers as well as helping broadcasters produce, manage and deliver high-end 3D on-air and in-studio graphics efficiently and economically. Regardless of the application, the openness of the Ventuz software suite allows for a variety of external control capabilities, such as multi-touch functionality enabling communication with any input device connected to a standard Windows PC.

Its easy to use authoring and animation environment offers an open framework of building blocks, which means users not only have a complete toolset for creating compelling content, but it also supports seamless integration with 3rd party applications. The unsurpassed flexibility of the Ventuz 3D engine provides unique possibilities to utilize designs for live presentations, interactive exhibits, broadcast on-air graphics, and interactive in-studio applications.

About Ventuz Technology AG:
