HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® Line Arrays and Premier Sound Services Add Spice to New Orleans’ ESSENCE Music Festival

NORTHRIDGE, California – Launched in 1995 by ESSENCE magazine, the ESSENCE Music Festival is a New Orleans celebration of African-American music and culture that showcases a variety of classic and contemporary artists. Premier Sound Services (PSS) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana brought in a bevy of HARMAN Professional equipment for the festival’s Coca-Cola and Verizon Superlounge stages, including JBL VERTEC® line arrays, Crown amps, Soundcraft mixing consoles and BSS, Lexicon and dbx signal processing.

The recent 2012 festival took place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and featured acts as diverse as Aretha Franklin, Keyshia Cole, Mary J. Blige, Gary Clark Jr., SWV, Dru Hill, the Stylistics and many more.

“This was a major festival and we brought in a major portion of our inventory,” noted Russ Bryant, Director of Operations and Co-Owner of PSS. “For both Superlounge stages, we had to stack the line arrays on top of the subs as flying was not feasible in the venue. Because the rooms were very wide and had relatively low ceilings and structural columns just on either side of both stages, for each room we put one stack on the inside of each column pointing directly forward and one stack outside of each column at 45 degrees.”

The Coca-Cola Superlounge featured four main speaker ground stacks of three VERTEC VT4888 midsize line array elements mounted on a VT4888-SF frame atop three SRX728S subwoofers. The speaker complement also included four VERTEC VT4886 subcompact line array elements for front fill, four VT4886 and two VT4883 subcompact arrayable subwoofers for side and drum fill, plus 16 SRX712M floor monitors. Thirteen Crown I-Tech 12000 HD amps powered the main line arrays, with nine I-Tech 8000 amps for the monitors. A 96-channel Soundcraft Vi6 console handled front of house mixing.

The Verizon Superlounge stage employed four ground stacks of four VERTEC VT4887A compact line array elements each, mounted on a VT4887-SF frame atop three SRX728S subwoofers. The system also included four VERTEC VT4886’s for front fill, two stacks of two SRX722 speakers and one SRX718S sub for side fill/drum fill, plus 12 SRX712M stage monitors. Main amplification was provided by eight Crown I-Tech 8000 amps, two I-Tech 4000 amps and one I-Tech 5000, with six I-Tech 4000’s driving the monitors. PSS also used HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ and JBL HiQnet Performancer Manager™ to set up and control both stages.

Soundcraft Series FIVE 48×4 and 52×26 consoles were used for front of house and monitor mixing, while the system utilized a host of HARMAN signal processors including BSS FCS-966 and FCS-960 equalizers, other BSS compressors and noise gates, a dbx 1046 quad compressor limiter and Lexicon PCM96 and other stereo reverb units/effects processors.

“I can consistently depend on JBL no matter what the situation,” said Bryant. “I have used JBL speakers since I got into the business in 1984. When we decided to purchase a line array system, we considered all the speakers on the market but decided that VERTEC best met our needs from a price/performance standpoint.”

“One day we’ll be hanging 16 VERTEC boxes per side in an arena and the next, stacking VT4888’s and VT4886’s in a club with a national touring band. While other speakers may work for one application or the other, we’ve found that our VERTEC inventory handles any requirement while delivering all the volume and quality we need. Also, since JBL introduced the VERTEC V5 DSP preset tunings, VERTEC has become even more rider-friendly.”

“In fact, we may be the most impressed by the VT4886,” Bryant noted. “We use them as front fills, side fills, drum fills and down fills under our VT4888’s and have even hung them 12 per side in smaller venues to do loud rock shows. It is the best-sounding, smallest, loudest box I have ever used. We have 40 in our inventory and plan to purchase more.”

“I also need to single out the Crown I-Tech HD Series amplifiers,” Bryant added. “We use a variety of models and they are simply amazing. No other amplifier is as accurate—we’ve scoped them and verified this against other amplifiers –and is as pleasing to my ear. The internal processing allows us to run the V5 presets, and I find that the speaker limiting is sonically more pleasing and protects our transducers better. They were a big part of the superior sound quality we achieved at the ESSENCE Music Festival.”

HARMAN Studer Vista 9 Highlights ATM System’s new HD2 OB Truck

KOBIERZYCE, Poland — Polish systems integration firm 4Vision recently installed a 52-fader HARMAN Studer Vista 9 console as part of a world-class broadcast production system for ATM System’s new HD2 OB truck.

ATM System, one of the largest production companies in Poland, has already deployed the HD2 OB truck for numerous major events throughout Europe, including the Polish football championships, Woodstock Festival Poland 2012 and, most recently at the IBC2012 Show in Amsterdam. The Vista 9 console was sold through ESS Audio, Studer’s Polish distributor.

The ATM HD2 OB truck measures 16.7 meters long and four meters wide, with two pull-out walls that create an area of over 45 square meters, allowing for up to 25 people to work comfortably. The HD2 OB truck marks the first installation of a Studer Vista 9 console in Poland.

“System integration for the truck was completed in four months,” said Maria Pirga, President of 4Vision. “The first transmission was done one week after the truck was completed, for a football match.”

According to Pirga, the Vista 9 was selected for the HD2 OB truck for a variety of reasons. “In our opinion, the Vista 9 is the best audio mixing console on the market,” Pirga noted. “It’s reliable, high-performance and it’s what ATM wanted. They also have a Vista 8 in another of their OB trucks, so they can integrate both systems together for very large events if they need to. This capability, combined with the familiarity of working with the Vista 8, made the Vista 9 the right choice.”

“The Vista 9 is a very stable system and is able to handle anything we require of it,” said Mariusz Nowak, Audio Engineer for ATM System.

Nowak’s favorite feature of the Vista 9 is its History display. “It’s very useful if for some reason the audio drops out on one channel but you can’t tell which one it was,” he said. “The Studer Histogram feature allows you to easily spot the channel where the audio dropped and you can react immediately, making the required adjustments. It’s the same if there is an unexpected signal overload in a particular channel. The red indications in the History display can’t be overseen and you can react right away. This is a very unique feature.”

Nowak also notes the benefits of the FaderGlow™ feature. “It’s extremely convenient to be able to assign the same color faders for similar channels,” he said. “I can quickly identify what each fader is assigned to. It just makes operation much more efficient.”

In addition, the Vistonics™ interface gives Nowak intuitive yet sophisticated control. “Vistonics is very useful,” he noted. “With one touch I can adjust compression, EQ, effects, every function I need.”

New MediaStar LAN-Caster Brings SD and HD Terrestrial and Satellite Streams to the IP Network

Cabletime, developer of the powerful MediaStar range of IPTV distribution solutions is launching new products in its Evolution LAN-Caster range. The LAN-Caster streams live news, sport, entertainment and information in both SD and HD from digital terrestrial and digital satellite channels into the LAN.

The new product line-ups, Evolution LAN-Caster DVB-T/T2 (Terrestrial) and DVB-S/S2 (Satellite), will feature a DVB-CAM slot for single or multiple channel decryption per single MUX, and within each MUX will deliver up to 15 concurrent TV and/or radio channels. The new solutions will enable users to deliver to the LAN a range of 2, 8 or 12 concurrent encrypted SD and HD channels from one single unit.

The MediaStar Evolution DVB-T/T2 line-up includes the 783-T; 783-T-CI (with DVD-CI); 783-T2; 783-T2-CI and the 783-T to T2 Upgrade. Customers and resellers can purchase a low cost entry-level DVB satellite or DVB terrestrial blade and upgrade it to take advantage of HD TV, and where available, Pay TV channels. The DVB-S/S2 line up comprises the 784-S2; 784-S2-CI (with DVD-CI); and the 784-S2-CI Upgrade. Both base products can also be upgraded to support the CAM module, DVB-CI.

“The great advantage of these features is that they reduce the project costs per channel by maximising the 15 channel count per device and with prices starting from £1295 and upgrades under £150 they represent incredible value,” comments Mike Cuckow, Sales Director, EMEA & Asia Pacific, Cabletime. “There is full flexibility to move between multiplex to access available channels via our SIP IP API commands.”

The LAN-Caster is designed to receive the digital terrestrial or satellite signal off-air DVB signals and to extract the digital data out of the MPEG-2 stream so it can be re-packetised in a format suitable for transmission over an IP-based network. Channels can be selected according to user preference and both new products will feature auto configuration through the MediaStar Media Manager enterprise software.

Another key feature of the DVB-T/T2 and DVB-S/S2 products is that they provide full support for third party API control options, including AMX Netlinks™ and Crestron QM-RMC™ through the RS232/USB port. Users can, therefore, extend their control system options and reduce hardware costs by using the ports on each Evolution LAN-Caster. The control system commands are passed through the RS232 ports and on to the MER control peripherals with full support for any command response.

Password protection and enablement coding that provides the option to field upgrade is included; the new products also feature front panel setup and configuration; and an integrated IR Blaster provides optional MER equipment control.

“The new LAN-Caster line up offers flexibility, upgrade options and the reassurance of MediaStar’s robust, proven technology, to ensure customers can take advantage of the growing number of digital SD and HD channels,” said Mike Cuckow. “Suitable for applications ranging from banking, financial institutions and international corporate organisations through to retail outlets, stadia and hotels, the new products will ensure that audiences across the IP network receive the highest quality SD and HD broadcasts.”

The MediaStar range, which has a strong, established heritage, includes TV/AV and multimedia delivery products for use over Cat-5/UTP and IP infrastructures, providing solutions for live TV, corporate communications, multicasts, music TV, training and digital signage.

MIDI Manufacturers Association and AES Partner to Celebrate 30 Years of MIDI Technology

LA HABRA, Calif., Oct. 2, 2012-The MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) today announced a partnership with the Audio Engineering Society (AES) to support the MMA’s upcoming “MIDI Makes Music” 30th anniversary celebration designed to educate consumers about the benefits of MIDI technology for anyone interested in learning, writing or playing music.

MIDI dramatically changed music-making 30 years ago-and it remains a key technology for music-making today. AES played a key role in MIDI’s history as the idea for the standard was first proposed at the 70th AES Convention in 1981.

At the upcoming 133rd AES Convention in San Francisco, the MMA will exhibit in booth 537 and host a session during AES’ “Project Studio Expo”. Developed in partnership with Sound On Sound and Craig Anderton, the Project Studio Expo (PSE) brings the latest recording techniques, best practices, and practical tips from leaders in the recording business.

“Our Project Studio Expo is focused on the very market that grew from the seeds MIDI planted 30 years ago”, said Bob Moses, AES Executive Director. “As someone who was there, actively participating in the MMA and developing early MIDI products in the 1980′s, I’m thrilled to welcome the MMA to our party as they begin their celebration.”

The MMA will formally launch its “MIDI Makes Music” campaign in 2013 at the NAMM Show.

“It takes broad industry-wide support to make MIDI a successful industry standard,” said Tom White, president, MMA. “We are grateful to AES for helping all of us celebrate this important milestone.”

About the MMA
The MIDI Manufacturers Association (MMA) is the publisher and authoritative source of MIDI specifications. Manufacturers achieve interoperability through compliance with MMA Recommended Practices. We provide forums for developers to coordinate changes to the MIDI specification, which today remains one of the most relevant standards in the entertainment industry.
