Garbage Touring with Earthworks WL40V Wireless Capsule

Milford, NH, October 2, 2012 – After a 7 year hiatus, Garbage released their fifth studio album, Not Your Kind of People, in May this year. The band has hit the road in support of the album’s release and is taking the new Earthworks WL40V along for the ride.

Shirley Manson singing into the WL40V

Garbage’s FOH engineer, Brad Divens, is no stranger to Earthworks microphones on tour. “I used the DP25/C and the DP30/C on Don Brewer’s kit during the Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band tour last year,” says Divens. “I was so blown away by the microphones that I used them on Stephen Perkins kit while on tour with Jane’s Addiction, also adding a pair of SR25s for overheads.”

After learning about the WL40V Wireless Capsule, Divens reached out to Earthworks to ask about trying the capsule on Garbage’s lead singer, Shirley Manson. “I heard that it was being developed and close to being finished about the time Garbage was starting up rehearsals,” says Divens. “I called Kim Hilton at Earthworks and inquired about trying one out on Shirley. I figured since the drum mics were so amazing that the vocal mic had to be just as impressive.”

As a touring professional who has used his fair share of microphones and wireless capsules on stage, Divens explains the major benefit of using the WL40V that he found. “When Shirley said to me that this was the first time she’s used a microphone that sounded like what she uses in the studio, I knew it was the one.”

“Shirley is a very dynamic singer and the WL40V responds well to her different vocal styles. One song she’ll be very intense and aggressive and the next song very soft and lush. She loves the way this microphone sounds both in her ears and on the live recordings that I’ve done on the road,” explains Divens.

Divens also got to try out the Earthworks SR40V wired vocal microphone at the 98.7 FM & Grammys.com performance in May. “I thought the SR40V sounded incredible,” says Divens. “It required very little EQ. It had clarity, presence and a very rich sonic quality about it. The rejection is very impressive also. When we do these types of performances there are wedges involved and we all know how troublesome that can be at times.”

So, how does the WL40V Wireless Capsule compare to its wired counterpart, the SR40V? “It had the same sonic clarity and presence as the SR40V,” concludes Divens. “A great addition to the Earthworks family of microphones.”

Spyder Takes Center Stage in Breakthrough LED Wall Installation At Redmond, Washington’s Timberlake Church

When Timberlake Church in Redmond, Washington wanted to redesign its main stage, it asked FocusWorship for help in meeting its AV needs. A Vista Systems Spyder X20 features prominently in the new install, which has a breakthrough LED wall at its center and numerous other display devices scattered across the campus.

FocusWorship is a rapidly growing, five-year old company in West Richland, Washington that provides AV, lighting and LED wall systems design and integration to the worship community. Its just-launched FocusAVLED division offers similar services to the education, medical, corporate and theater sectors.

FocusWorship owner Dave Dartnall’s extensive background in worship ministry helped Timberlake Church “clarify the vision of what it wanted to accomplish on stage,” he notes. “They needed something simple, compelling and high impact. A clean stage with an LED wall was the solution, creating and controlling all of the content digitally so they wouldn’t be wearing out a volunteer crew resetting the stage every week. And it was clear that Spyder needed to be the brain behind all the video distribution.”

Dartnall was convinced that an LED wall was the right solution for delivering the church’s message to a congregation that includes some very AV savvy people. “Timberlake Church is in the middle of Microsoft country, and some of the most advanced professionals in the world attend,” he reports. “The church needed to speak the language of its congregation, and it was willing to make a significant financial investment to connect with them. The result has been pretty powerful and amazing: On the Sunday the new stage debuted, the media professionals in the congregation lined up to take a look at the control room.”

FocusWorship installed a proprietary 24×14-foot LED wall with 6mm dot pitch on the stage of the sanctuary auditorium. It forms the back wall for those on stage: speakers, pastors, and the rockin’ band led by Julian Garcia.

“The LED wall’s picture quality looks like HDTV – only ten times better,” Dartnall declares. “It’s crystal clear and stays bright even with all the stage lights required to record services, unlike projection screens that tend to wash out.” And unlike split screens that can divert a congregation’s attention from the leader or speaker, the single big LED wall powerfully supports the activity on stage without having congregants disengage from the worship service underway.

The LED wall is active from the moment people arrive in the auditorium displaying a countdown clock, points of information and scripture verses, then song lyrics, graphics, personal testimonies, and preproduced video content during the service. “It’s a very media-rich environment,” says Dartnall. Two angled projection screens, a bit higher than the top of the LED wall and driven by a pair of 6K lumen projectors, flank the center wall and display IMAG of the service.

“So far the Timberlake LED wall is the only one we know of in a church in the Pacific Northwest,” says Dartnall. “It’s exciting to be part of what we see as a rapidly growing trend.”

FocusWorship’s LED wall is “a very affordable solution for this market at just one-quarter the cost of most current LEDs available,” he notes. It eliminates the need for expensive projector bulb replacement, offers low electrical consumption, and can last ten years in constant use. “The cost savings for an installation over time can be huge,” he says.

Spyder delivers the video content to the LED wall and to an array of flat-panel TVs/digital signage displays located in the church lobby, nursery, an overflow room and other areas. “Spyder takes the video signal and spreads it to its different destinations,” Dartnall explains. “It can take a lot of other devices to do what Spyder does all by itself. It’s completely in a league of its own. Spyder is able to support the media-rich environment everyone is craving.”

Content sources in the dedicated control room include computers, DVDs, media players and live cameras. “We really need all of Spyder’s inputs,” notes Rob Schulgren, lead installer at FocusWorship, “and Spyder’s amazing video processing capabilities. Timberlake Church also takes advantage of Spyder features such as PIP.” A High Resolution Systems UDC Spyder Touch serves as the touchscreen interface, he adds.

“The church has a technical director who’s built a volunteer team” to man the LED wall, says Dartnall. “Just like Timberlake Church, Spyder values simplicity. So the technical director is able to preprogram all media before the service, and the volunteers just push the buttons on the UDC Spyder Touch to trigger content. I understand that the chance to use this sophisticated equipment has boosted the church’s volunteer base!”

One of FocusWorship’s technical engineers, Marshall Hopkins, was also a key member of the Timberlake Church install team.

WE’RE HEARING YOU LOUD AND CLEAR WITH DPA MICROPHONES

As the Torch Relays made their way around the UK this summer, DPA microphones were at the heart of the festivities, providing loud and clear audio at a total of 70 evening celebrations and the daily lighting of the cauldron ceremonies.

Among the items on the extensive sound, lighting and power equipment list for the Torch Relays were DPA d:fine™ Headset Microphones, supplied by DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network. These were used at every one of the 70 locations to mic a wide range of dancers, actors, presenters and TV presenters.

“We chose DPA d:fine Headset Microphones for their discreet profile and sensitive capsules,” says sound engineer Doug Maddison, who was responsible for the on-stage sound at the evening gigs. “We specified the cardioid version to try and reduce spill and feedback from the monitors and the PA. This was important as the presenters were often standing in front of the PA to address the audience.”

Among the artists who took part in the evening celebrations were Dizzee Rascal, Labrinth, Eliza Doolittle, Friendly Fires, The Wanted, You Me At Six, Mark Ronson, Katy B, Emeli Sandé, Wretch 32 and dance troupe Twist And Pulse. A number of presenters were also involved in each leg of the relay, including former ‘Blue Peter’ presenter Andy Akinwolere.

“When I heard I was doing 70 gigs in a row on monitors with multiple headset microphones, I did wonder if I was going to go mad, but thanks to DPA I was very pleasantly surprised,” Maddison adds. “The d:fine’s performed really well and required very little EQ-ing. Normally, if I am using headset microphones, I would anticipate having to do some very careful EQ-ing to achieve either a quiet but full sound or a loud but very modified sound with lots of missing frequencies. However, on the first day of using the d:fines, I found that it was possible to use the same output wedge EQ that I used for a band with dynamic microphones, without having to do much EQ-ing on the d:fine input. The result was impressively loud and clear.”

Doug Maddison says his experience of fitting the d:fine Headset Microphones to artists, performers and presenters was also very positive.

“They were very comfortable for the performers and incredibly easy to fit – to the extent that some artists could actually mic themselves up. Even the dancers doing breakdancing and acrobatics had no trouble keeping the d:fine’s in place.”

Over 1.5 million people saw the Torch Relay evening celebrations, some of which took place in seriously adverse weather conditions.

“We were outside for 70 days and for about 36 of those it rained non-stop,” Maddison adds. “The d:fines were used every day and regularly got soaked. As one would expect this occasionally had an impact on high frequencies, but once we’d dried the microphones out in a box of silica gel their performance quickly returned to normal.”

One thing Maddison did discover is that, compared to previous microphones he has used, the cardioid version of the DPA d:fine proved very effective in high winds.

“Overall we were really delighted with their performance,” he says. “They looked great, they sounded great and all I can say is thank you, DPA, for making it all so easy.”

Hot Chelle Rae Turns to Neumann KK 205 Microphone Capsules for Warm, Crisp Sound

Nashville-based pop rock band Hot Chelle Rae burst onto the charts last year with its double-platinum single, “Tonight, Tonight,” off its sophomore album, Whatever. Since then, the band’s intense schedule has taken them on an almost non-stop international tour with headline appearances in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Japan. Premium audio brands Neumann and Sennheiser have been along for the ride as Hot Chelle Rae’s equipment demands have become increasingly sophisticated and their fan base multiplies.

Hot Chelle Rae‘s core members have been playing together for the better part of seven years and were born into Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter families. Just two years ago, the bandmates were touring in a van and a trailer playing 1,000-capacity clubs. Their single “Tonight, Tonight” helped rocket them to the top, coming in at number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts and number five on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 charts.

With a rigorous tour schedule that now involves buses rather than small trailers, the band routinely finds themselves opening for acts like Taylor Swift and The Script when they are not playing major headline dates themselves. The band has dramatically improved the audio quality of their live performance by utilizing a combination of Neumann KK 205 capsules and Sennheiser SKM 2000 wireless transmitters for their two primary vocal positions.

“We were looking for better clarity in our vocal performances,” commented Zach Snyder, monitor engineer and production manager of Hot Chelle Rae. “We selected the Neumann KK 205 mic capsule because of its warm sound and super-cardioid pattern, which does a great job in rejecting ambient stage noise. Paired with our Sennheiser SKM 2000 transmitters, these capsules save us an incredible amount of time on sound checks since they sound great out of the box since they require very little EQ.”

Snyder, who says he likes the frequency response of the KM 205 more than any other mic capsule he’s used, expects to add a Neumann KK 204 capsule when the band adds a new keyboard player to its lineup in the near future. In addition to the Neumann KK 205s, Hot Chelle Rae maintains 16 channels of Sennheiser RF on stage: six channels on guitar, eight for wireless personal monitors and two for vocal microphones. Snyder says he plans to increase that number to 22 in the near future.

The transition to the KK 205 capsules was seamless and has been a measurable improvement: “They’re really pumped and Ryan’s [Follesé's] vocals come through extremely clear,” says Snyder. “Also having the Neumann capsules have brought us tons of credibility with other engineers!”

The acoustic features of the KK 204 and KK 205 capsule heads are derived from the multiple award-winning wired Neumann stage microphones, the KMS 104 and KMS 105. The KK 204, with its cardioid pattern, ensures the best possible suppression of sound originating from 180 degrees to the rear, while the supercardioid KK 205 has greater directivity, and maximizes incident sound from the front as compared to sound from the rear. Due to the “single polar pattern design,” the polar patterns are very uniform over the entire frequency range and provide excellent resistance to feedback.
