Longwood University Maximizes Theater and Presentation Experience with PixelFLEX LED Curtain

Frustrated by the limitations of the projection screen in its main auditorium, Longwood University, a liberal arts school located in Virginia, recently installed a 15-panel, 18 mm LED Curtain from PixelFLEX to visually enhance performances and presentations while maximizing viewer experience.

“We had a traditional projection screen on our stage for a long time and, while it was great if we were showing a movie where we would darken the auditorium, it was extremely limited in many other circumstances where we needed to light the stage,” said William Lynn, University multi-media supervisor. “Given that, we were looking for a solution that would provide high-quality visual images whether it was during a musical performance, a movie or a presentation.”

Featuring 3,000 pixels PSM (Per Square Meter) and 3680 brightness, PixelFLEX’s LED Curtain offers Longwood University a solution that is easy to set up and operate – videos and images can be sent to the screen using any computer with a DVI-D connection. For this project, PixelFLEX developed custom-size panels – tailored specifically for the University’s installation – totaling approximately 17×32 feet. The 18mm Curtain’s flexibility and light weight -was the primary differentiator for the University’s multi-media team when researching replacements for their traditional projection screen.

“One of the major benefits of the PixelFLEX video screen is that it is extremely easy to move, which means we can use video and effects in a variety of environments across the campus,” said John Hogge, University multi-media technician. “Over the summer, we took six of the 15 panels to the gym for new student orientation, whereas in the past we used an inflatable screen for orientation. The PixelFLEX screens provided much higher quality resolution and that kind of flexibility is invaluable.”

To date, Longwood University has used the Curtain to show videos, DVD clips and PowerPoint presentations. In the near future, Lynn expects the University will expand the use of the system to include performances by the school’s wind symphony and as backdrop for an upcoming play, in addition to inviting students to incorporate the technology into their projects and extra-curricular activities. To that end, the multi-media team recently tied a set of new cameras with wireless transmitters into the system so that when hosting concerts or dances, they’ll be able to throw the camera on the audience and their image will appear on screen.

Flexible in all directions and exceptionally durable, PixelFLEX LED Curtains are able to bend and shape around structures for a more creative display effect. Sacramento’s KVIE Becomes First PBS Affiliate to Adopt Digital Nirvana’s Monitor IQ™ System for Monitoring and Logging

KVIE Selects Monitor IQ Essentials with Nielsen NAVE Watermark Decoding for Multi-Channel ATSC Broadcast Monitoring and Quality Control

Newark, CA – KVIE, the PBS affiliate serving the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto market, has chosen the Digital Nirvana Monitor IQ Broadcast Monitoring System (BMS) to perform quality control monitoring of its ATSC signals.

KVIE is the first PBS affiliate to adopt Digital Nirvana’s Monitor IQ for broadcast monitoring. The station placed its order for Monitor IQ Essentials in early June 2012. The system will be used to monitor the ATSC “off-air” signals of KVIE’s three DTV channels: KVIE 6.1 HDTV, KVIE2 6.2, and KVIE 6.3 VME – a Spanish language service.

Monitor IQ is a monitoring, logging, compliance, and content republishing system for TV networks and stations. It combines the functionality of content recording (HD and SD in full resolution), content searching, retrieve and repurposing, Web publishing, signal monitoring, air-check logging, archiving, ad verification and tracking, and competitive analysis in a scalable networked appliance.

Monitor IQ is available in four packages—Starter, Essentials, Plus and Premier—making it affordable and suitable for virtually every broadcast customer. Monitor IQ Essentials, the package KVIE ordered, includes basic Starter features, such as core logging functionality, plus FCC compliance monitoring and loudness monitoring.

“Our goal is to ensure that we are broadcasting high-quality signals that comply with the intent and spirit of The CALM Act and other federal and FCC mandates,” said Greg Johnson, director of engineering for KVIE. Johnson added that the loudness mandate does not directly apply to KVIE because it’s a public television station.

“The Monitor IQ system will also help us monitor closed captioning, signal interruptions, PSIP, and the overall technical integrity of our ATSC signals,” Johnson added. “With the ability to store 90-days worth of off-air HD/SD recordings, we can go back and check the signals we aired to verify compliance or take corrective action when issues are detected.”

KVIE also ordered an optional feature for decoding and logging the Nielsen NAVE Watermark ID to verify its presence within their DTV signals. Watermark NAVE decoding is a standard feature in the Monitor IQ Plus version.

Monitor IQ Essentials includes all the functionality necessary for broadcasters to ensure regulatory compliance. Newly introduced features include support for IP as an input source, and loudness monitoring is now bundled in as a standard feature within the package. The Monitor IQ Essentials system accepts DVB-T/C/S2, ASI, ASI/IP, HD/SD-SDI, ATSC/QAM and NTSC/QAM, and NTSC/PAL formats. It records audio, video, VANC metadata and captioning in both high- and low-definition. As with the Starter package, searching is based upon keywords, titles, subtitles, descriptions, textual metadata, closed-caption text and imported logs, with filtering by time, date and channel. Recordings can also be edited, clipped, stored and sent via email or FTP.

“We’re extremely pleased that KVIE has expressed confidence in our Monitor IQ broadcast monitoring system for its off-air multi-channel ATSC signal monitoring,” said Ned Chini, vice president of sales and marketing for Digital Nirvana. “We look forward to building a strong, mutually rewarding relationship with KVIE and supporting their goals of ensuring the delivery of high-quality broadcast signals to the communities they serve.”

Based in Sacramento, KVIE reaches 1.4 million households in its 28-county coverage area via broadcast as well as cable and satellite service providers. In addition to carrying PBS network programming, KVIE also produces several of its own original series including “Viewfinder,” which focuses on issues of interest to Northern California; Studio Sacramento, a public affairs program; and “America’s Heartland, about agriculture in America.

ELAN Begins Worldwide Delivery Of Its New ELAN g! 6.0 Software

Following up on its introduction at CEDIA 2012, ELAN Home Systems today announced its has commenced delivering its new ELAN g! 6.0 software featuring a host of new system-wide enhancements that include an ELAN g!Mobile app for Android® devices, up to 24 music services, full door locks integration, additional driver and a new user interface architecture that allows for the easy addition of new features, user interface enhancements and integration with future platforms.

According to ELAN Senior Vice President of Marketing Paul Starkey, the delivery of the new 6.0 software, and its four new critically important feature sets, comes at a time when the ELAN g! System is gaining major sales traction in both residential and commercial market segments.

“Sales have absolutely reached a critical mass that will only continue to gain momentum as we move forward with our long-term product enhancements. In fact, sales of g! have now surpassed 10,000 systems,” he emphasized. “More and more dealers are recognizing that ELAN g! is the best integrated entertainment and control system on the market today. It’s the easiest system to demonstrate, install, enjoy and maintain in any type of residential and commercial application.”

Starkey emphasized today that dealers who sell the ELAN g! System are enjoying the business benefits of the classic 80/20 rule. “ELAN g! dealers are generating 20% higher margins while investing 20% less labor, and see 80% less callbacks and 80% fewer competing dealers bidding on key projects. It’s the ultimate ‘win-win’ for everyone — particularly for the consumer who can invest gradually in a g! system, expanding its capabilities quickly and easily over time.”

With regard to the specific features introduced today CORE Brands Director of the Control Segment Joe Lautner stressed that, “We are taking the g! System to new heights by introducing ELAN’s Android app, which adds to our Apple iOS app to offer users full mobile control from nearly every smartphone and tablet available today! With a user interface that is second to none, hardware components that feature attractive industrial design and premium build materials, and the power and expandability of our HC Home Controllers, the g! System is the most scalable and capable control system in its class.”

Lautner noted that ELAN built its new ELAN g!Mobile Android app from the ground up because dedicated apps coded for each device are very labor and time intensive to upgrade for each device, and browser-based apps are often slow to respond and offer less graphically rich features. ELAN has created an entirely new User Interface App Architecture that makes it much easier and faster to upgrade the GUI on every device with a single update instead of writing new code for each device.

Enhancing the security/access functions of the g! System, ELAN today introduced the comprehensive door locks integration. Once a certified ELAN dealer sets up the system, end-users have the ability to easily control locks from home and while away, create convenient lock groups, and set their own user pass codes. This way g! owners can manage the door locks and security for their entire home or business without consulting a technician to make changes.

ELAN g! also provides owners with a detailed history of the door locks that includes time of entry, door location, and whose pass code was used. The easy-to-use door locks interface shows up under the security tab right alongside the standard security features, so it is simple to view and access. Owners can set unique pass codes for each user, and even set new/temporary pass codes for a maid, repairman, or visiting relative.

Finally, ELAN has added more than 30 new third-party, two way drivers, expanding the system’s support for new products in HDMI video switching, security cameras, climate systems, lighting, audio receivers and sources, security and connectivity devices. With these new drivers dealers can now integrate many of the latest products from brands such as 2 Gig, Atlona, Axis, Baldwin, Denon, Geffen, Honeywell, Panasonic, Panamax/Furman, Pioneer, KwikSet, Rako Snap AV, Trane, Vantage, Vivotek, Xantech, Yale, Yamaha and more.
