UBS Takes First HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Performer in the Baltics

RIGA, Latvia — UBS (Universal Baltic Sound) of Latvia has purchased the first new HARMAN Soundcraft Si Performer console in the Baltic region.

The rental company had originally been invited by Soundcraft’s Latvian distributor Audio AE to test the Si Compact 24 console on the recent tour of top local rock act Brainstorm, as the FOH mixing console for support band, The Sound Poets.

After using it on various shows they were highly impressed with the feature set. Although USB senior sound engineer Maris Liepa had never previously worked on the desk he was surprised at how easy it was to navigate. “I instinctively knew how to use it without referring to the manual,” he smiled. “The tour was a great test for a new product and we were able to run both FOH and monitors from a single Si24.”

They were all set to purchase the desk and add it to their extensive inventory of Soundcraft analogue boards…until the Si Performer hybrid desk, which is based on the same platform, was announced.

“When we learnt of the Performer 3, we were particularly impressed with the bigger channel count, the two option slots, which allow I/O expansion…and the more attractive appearance,” said Maris. “And so we didn’t hesitate to place the order for this instead.”

As touring veterans, experienced in running Soundcraft legacy consoles, they are familiar with the legendary signature audio and desk ergonomics. They have seen how easy it is to retain the feel of analogue within a digital board—a tradition that continues with the Si Performer 3.

The Si Performer is the first digital audio mixer with integrated DMX for lighting control. With a total possible capacity of 80 inputs, it takes the popular Si Compact platform as its base but provides almost twice as much DSP power and increased functionality. The Si Performer 3 itself offers 32 mic and eight line inputs, offering 14 aux/group mix busses, as well as four FX return channels; and with the aforementioned input cards it is possible to patch up to 80 inputs.

In addition, the integration of a DMX512 port offers core lighting control, with the initial release of software providing four scene masters (A-D) with associated slave channels on the ALT fader layers. This makes the desk thoroughly unique.

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets — supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon® and Mark Levinson®. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. Sound Devices Brings Array of Audio and Video Production Solutions to CCW 2012

NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 14, 2012 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, showcases its latest audio and video production gear for content creation professionals at this year’s CCW (Booth 946). The company is exhibiting the recently upgraded PIX 240i and PIX 260i Audio/Video Recorders, as well as the 664 Production Mixer.

Sound Devices’ PIX 240i Audio/Video Recorder features a five-inch, IPS-based LCD panel with accurate color rendition and consistent off-axis viewing response. The upgraded display is essential in the field, providing users with immediate confirmation of framing, exposure, focus, audio-metering and setup menu selections. It also offers higher contrast and better off-axis viewing. PIX 240i users can monitor an image’s exposure with Exposure Assist, a feature that depicts either false-color or multilevel zebra stripes. It comes equipped with Focus Assist, which includes a peaking filter and 1:1 pixel zoom. Monitor brightness, contrast and chroma adjustments are also now available. PIX 240i provides standard definition recording (NTSC and PAL) and support for using simultaneous analog and SDI/HDMI audio inputs.

Users can connect the PIX 240i to cameras with HDMI (plus SDI with the PIX 240i) and record directly to QuickTime using Apple’s ProRes or Avid’s DNxHD codecs. Use of these codecs enables files recorded in the field to be used directly in post production, making the workflow simple and fast. The audio circuitry on the PIX 240i is based on Sound Devices’ award-winning 7-Series Digital Audio Recorders. The low-noise (-128 dBu EIN), high-headroom, high-bandwidth inputs are mic/line switchable and include limiters, high-pass filters and phantom power.

Also on display is the Sound Devices PIX 260i Production Audio/Video Recorder. Based on the field-proven PIX 240i recorder, the rack-mounted PIX 260i is a file-based audio/video deck that seamlessly replaces tape-based video decks in production and post-production environments, while offering 32 tracks of audio record/playback. Using the Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD codecs, the PIX 260i records and plays files at up to 220 Mbps in high-quality, 10-bit 4:2:2 video. It also records 32 tracks of 48-kHz audio. Files from the PIX 260i are ready for direct import into the Avid and Final Cut Pro editing platforms, eliminating time-consuming transferring and transcoding. Files can also play out of the PIX 260i for real-time applications.

The PIX 260i has a built-in, five-inch 800 x 480-pixel IPS video display that allows users tto view video and setup-menu selections. With its extensive control capabilities, the PIX 260i is a flexible video playback source, compatible with Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X and Avid Quicktime files. The PIX 260i can be controlled by both external RS-422 and via Ethernet through its embedded Web server, allowing for machine transport control over Ethernet-based networks.

Up to four SATA drives can be connected to the PIX 260i simultaneously. For RAID-type redundancy and to eliminate the need for post-record copying when multiple copies are required, users can record to all four drives simultaneously.

As with the PIX 240i, the PIX 260i includes a built-in Ambient Clockit time-code generator/reader with genlock output for rock-steady, multi-camera and double-system sound applications. In addition to generating ultra-stable time code, time codes can be read from the SDI stream, the HDMI stream or from an external source.

Sound Devices will also be featuring its 664 Production Mixer at CCW 2012. The 664 was designed to build upon the powerful features of the company’s best-selling line of field and production mixers and offers expanded input/output connectivity and recording capabilities, along with greater flexibility and ease-of-use. The flagship recorder’s six input channels have dedicated controls for trim, fader, pan and PFL. The inputs and four output buses are all recordable, for a total of 10 tracks of recording.

The 664 contains six ultra-low noise, high-dynamic range and transformer-less preamps, which accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, input trim control and direct outputs on every channel. Featuring full analog audio paths for high-performance audio and superb power efficiency, the 664 also has numerous digital capabilities. Inputs 1 and 6 can be selected as AES3 or AES42 inputs for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking.

The 664 can record up to 10 tracks of 16- or 24-bit broadcast WAV files to SD and/or CompactFlash cards. All inputs and outputs are individually selectable for recording, enabling the mixer to record all 10 channels of audio. With the 664’s dual card slots, content can be recorded to either or both cards simultaneously, with the added ability to assign different tracks to each memory card.

Sound Devices is also highlighting a companion accessory, the CL-6 Input Expander, for the 664 Production Mixer. It is designed specifically to add six analog line-level inputs to the mixer. With the CL-6 attached, the direct output connectors are available as inputs, controlled by faders located on the CL-6 front panel. The CL-6 also offers additional LED output metering and duplicate-recording transport controls. With the 664 Production Mixer connected to the CL-6 Input Expander, users can now record all 12 input channels and four outputs, for a total of 16 tracks.

Sound Devices, LLC designs and manufactures portable audio mixers, digital audio recorders, and digital video recorders and related equipment for feature film, episodic television, documentary, news-gathering, and acoustical test and measurement applications. The fourteen-year old company designs and manufactures from their Reedsburg, Wisconsin headquarters with additional offices in Madison, WI and Highland Park, IL. BASSMAXX Launches the XSP218 “MAXX-ill” 6,800W Powered Subwoofer

AUSTIN, Texas, November 14, 2012— BASSMAXX (www.bassmaxx.com), an industry leader in high-output subwoofers and audiophile-quality professional loudspeakers, is proud to announce the launch of its newest Profundo Series powered subwoofer. Scheduled to ship December 1, 2012, the 6,800 Watt XSP218 “MAXX-ill” delivers an unprecedented combination of depth, fidelity, impact, and value.

“The XSP218 will play louder, lower and longer than anything comparable in size, price and weight,” explained David Lee, president and designer of BASSMAXX. “Many other loudspeakers claim to be able to do the same, but in reality they can get loud OR they can get deep, but not at the same time, and not for extended periods. The BASSMAXX XSP218 plays extremely loud and extraordinarily deep, and it can do both, for hours on end. In addition, each comes with a two-year warranty on ALL components, including voice coils.”

The demand for high output at lower and lower frequencies is increasing with practically every new song release, and demanding that performance from under-powered and inadequate loudspeakers will inevitably result in excessive distortion or failure. For customers who can’t tolerate either, the XSP218 is the ideal option. Designed for touring professionals who want to reduce the size and weight of their rigs while delivering huge volume, power and bass, the MAXX-ill is the perfect solution.

With 6800W of amplification on board, the MAXX-ill has the dynamic power headroom necessary to reproduce live kick-drums to spectacular effect. The massive power amplification is matched with massive power-handling drivers and the cabinet is optimized to take full advantage of the capabilities of the drivers and amplifiers. The result is very high SPL bass without concerns about overdriven or blown loudspeakers regardless of the musical genre. That also translates into smaller systems doing bigger shows, with significantly lower transport and labor costs down the road.

“The MAXX-ill delivers an unprecedented combination of depth, fidelity, impact, and value,” Lee continued. “With this kind of incredibly clean, undistorted output at full power, you can confidently push the MAXX-ills to levels that competitors would require many more cabinets, more weight, and/or more investment to achieve.”

The XSP218 is a loudspeaker that sustains its output long-term and is practically impossible to blow thanks to extremely rugged, very high power-handling, long- excursion drivers, carefully optimized cabinet and port design, and an effective but transparent protection system that essentially prevents thermal overload of the voice coils and minimizes long-term thermal compression.

The MAXX-ill XSP218 includes dual bridged 3400W amplifier modules, for a total of 6800W of power, with on-board fixed-latency digital signal processing. The processor is used to provide crossover and limiter functions and the standard settings are compatible with all BASSMAXX products. Four presets are stored in the DSP and can be selected from the amplifier panel on the rear of the speaker. A level control is also provided, allowing gain adjustment from off to +12dB. The amplifier module has an auto-sensing universal power supply and power factor correction, allowing it to run on electrical supplies from 85V to 270V. Power input is via Neutrik Powercon and signal input is via XLR. Pass-through connectors for both power and signal are provided.

“The woofer cones are waterproof, so they’re impervious to liquids, whether in the form of rain at an outdoor festival, spilled beverages in a busy nightclub, or being wiped down after a beach gig,” Lee elaborated. “The XSP218 is engineered to work hard and continue to work where others fail. To assure customers of that capability, our warranty covers all electronics, including burned woofers, for two years from the date of purchase.”

Available with your choice of white, black or BASSMAXX logo grills. Touring options include locking wheel dollies and heavy-duty padded nylon covers. For additional specifications, photographs, cut sheet and options, please visit: http://www.bassmaxx.com/pages/product_sub_XSP218.php

“We design and manufacture every product to the highest standards, and with great care taken over every detail, so we sincerely believe that our customers will be thrilled with every purchase,” Lee added. “We work to ensure that they are completely satisfied, and if they’re not, for any reason, they may exchange their purchase within 30 days for another model or the purchase price will be refunded. No hassles. Plain and simple.”

For more information on BASSMAXX products and services, please call 512-368-3268, or visit www.BASSMAXX.com.

FUJIFILM Unveils New FUJINON Cabrio PL Mount Zoom and Ultra-Wide HDTV Field Production Lens

Wayne, N.J. – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division is introducing two new high-performance FUJINON lenses: the PL 85-300 Cabrio lens (model ZK3.5×85) and the XA99x8.4BESM ultra-wide field production lens. The PL 85-300, a PL Mount zoom lens in the Premier PL digital cinematography family, capitalizes on the popularity and success of its predecessor, the PL19-90mm Cabrio (Model ZK4.7×19). The new XA99x8.4 is a box style HD lens, ideal for producing live sports and entertainment events.

PL 85-300 Cabrio

While the PL 85-300 is similar in size and weight as the PL 19-90, its longer lens makes it ideal for shooting documentaries, nature and wildlife, and car commercials, among other demanding production scenarios. The PL 85-300 offers a focal length of 85-220mm at T2.9 and 300mm at T4.0, with 200-degree focus rotation.

Designed using the latest optical simulation technology, the PL 85-300 Cabrio not only offers exceptional optical performance in the center of the image but in the corners of the frame as well. Like the highly acclaimed PL 19-90 Cabrio, the PL 85-300 is equipped with the same indispensable features including flange focal distance adjustment, a MOD of 1.2m, a macro function for objects as close as 97mm (3.8-inches), and covers a 31.5mm diagonal sensor size

The digital servo’s 16-bit encoding assures operators that all lens data output—such as the position of the zoom, iris, and focus—is extremely accurate and the lens supports Lens Data System (LDS) and /i metadata formats. Like the PL 19-90 Cabrio, the new PL 85-300 features an exclusive detachable servo drive unit, making it suitable for use as a standard PL lens or as an ENG-style lens. And the PL 85-300 can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers as well as existing FUJINON wired and wireless units. The other Premier PL Mount Series lenses are available in 14.5-45mm T2.0, 18-85mm T2.0, 24-180mm T2.6, and 75-400 mm T2.8-T3.8 ranges.

“We designed the new PL 85-300, and the entire Premier PL zoom lens family, to give professional cinematographers and videographers the utmost in features and versatility. We believe that a wide array of choices help them match the right lens with the unique demands of their high-end productions,” said Thom Calabro, director, Marketing and Product Development, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division.

“Versatility means that videographers accustomed to shooting ENG-style will be right at home with a servo attached to the lens, while cinematographers who shoot projects like feature films and commercials can opt to shoot without it,” Calabro explained. “Cinematographers will also like that this lens accepts industry standard cine motors and matte boxes.”

XA99x8.4 Ultra-Wide Lens

The new XA99x8.4 ultra-wide field production lens offers a zoom range of 99x, a focal length of 8.4 to 832mm, and MOD of 2.9m. The XA99x is f1.7 to 341mm and f4.2 at 832mm. Like other lenses in this product line, including the XA77x9.5, XA88x8.8, XA88x12.5 and the XA101x8.9, the XA99x8.4 offers FUJINON’s DIGI POWER digital controls (featuring F number limit), Quick Zoom, two-shot presets, a 2X extender, and other precision digital functions increasing production flexibility.

“The XA99x Ultra Wide is outstanding in its class because it combines high-performance imaging, a long zoom reach, and an ultra-wide angle,” said Calabro. “Since it’s extremely rugged, versatile, and reliable, this telephoto zoom lens is ideal for even the most demanding live sports production.”

The XA99x8.4 features a newly developed patented image stabilization technology for rock-steady performance, which is especially critical for long-distance HD shots. High-resolution 16-bit encoders are standard, making it suitable to virtual, robotic, and digital signage, among other applications. FUJINON’s exclusive GO-Technology improves image resolution and chromatic aberrations at all focal lengths.

This 2/3-inch telephoto field lens employs the latest High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating (HT-EBC) resulting in richer colors and greatly improved blue response and transmittance. HT-EBC coupled with FUJINON’s exclusive Aspheric Technology reduce ghost and flare and increase light transmission. A proprietary anti-fogging design minimizes lens fogging and reduces downtime due to moisture—a critical concern when shooting in all types of weather conditions.

U Street Music Hall Named For Top 10 US Club Sound System

Washington, D.C.’s U Street Music Hall, equipped with a Martin Audio speaker system known for its powerful WS218X subwoofers, was recognized for having one of the Top 10 US Club Sound Systems by Beatport, an online music store specializing in electronic dance music and culture.

Designed and installed by Adam Weiner, principal of ITI Audio Inc., working with partner William McClure and consultant Brian Miller of Edit Design, the Martin Audio system consists of four Martin Audio Blackline+ H3+ three-way speakers, two H3H+ three-way speakers, and two F15+ enclosures as DJ monitors in addition to the five WS218Xs powered by Martin Audio MA9.6K and MA12K amps. BSS Soundweb London Blu-160 and XTA DP226 are used for processing.

The landmark system had already earned praise since the edgy Washington club’s inception. Chris Richards of the Washington Post wrote, “Bass drips like subsonic honey from U Hall’s six-figure sound system, an incredible machine that trumps any nightclub’s in the city.” Asked about the earth-shattering bass system, club principal Will Eastman wryly noted to DCist, “One of our friends from the 9:30 Club was here last night, and he said, ‘nobody that works in this club will ever have kidney stones.’”

Commenting on the system, Weiner told Beatport, “U Hall is an example of what happens when people who care about how their music sounds do everything right in designing their club.” Beatport added, “Although the system bumps like no other, it only has five subs. That’s a true testament to the power of Martin Audio.”

Asked why the owners opted for Martin Audio, Weiner concludes, “They heard Martin Audio at a previous ITI installation and knew it was the best. They describe the system as amazing and intense.”

Niles Brings New Meaning To Architectural Sound In Luxury California Home Theater

Some home theaters are nothing more than a flat screen TV with a couple of speakers placed randomly giving the illusion of a true surround sound experience. Then there are others, like this recently completed luxury home theater in Thousand Oaks, California, that feature only the best of the best, from personalized motorized recliners to an invisible surround sound system with Niles® legendary architectural speakers that give viewers incredible audio that is heard, but not seen.

The homeowners had one specific request for Thousand Oaks-based custom integrator Wilshire Home Entertainment, and it was that all the electronics besides the projector and screen needed to be completely hidden from view. They utilized in-wall subwoofers, a total of seven Niles in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, and hid the system components behind acoustic panels under the screen to give the owners exactly what they were looking for: an over-the-top home theater that completely engulfs the viewer into whatever they are watching.

According to Wilshire Home Entertainment’s Project Designer Bennett Bowman, “The clients were very hands-on when it came to the actual interior design of the theater. They wanted to continue the ornate décor and style of their home in the theater, without compromising the aesthetic with bulky speakers and electronic components. Every fabric, every color and every decorative item in the room was selected by the clients and our design team to create an “over the top” look and feel. The only way to deliver the sound quality they deserve without making it visible was to use Niles speakers. The painters went right over the speaker grilles like they were part of the ceiling, and that’s exactly how Niles designed them to be used.”

Wilshire Home Entertainment chose the ideal components for every aspect of the theater, installing three Niles IW2670LCR architectural speakers behind the screen and four Niles IW770FX surround channel architectural speakers in the rear and sides of the room to deliver a true seven channel audio experience. As the clients requested, the only pieces of equipment visible in the 400 square-foot home theater are the Runco® VX-22d Projector and the Stewart® CineCurve™ Screen.

The theater’s interior elements and designs were provided by Boca Raton, Florida-based Cinema Design Group International. The chairs, designed by First Impressions Theme Theatres in North Miami, Florida, are motorized recliners and include the clients’ family crest. The family crest can also be found on the remote control screen.

With unique touches like running lights, illuminated lions’ heads at the end of the chairs’ armrests and ceiling stars that fade and brighten with a push of a button, the homeowners have a theater unlike any other, one truly worthy of the title “home theater”. The equipment within the home theater also controls the audio and visual systems throughout house, which allows the client to listen to music and watch DirecTV channels in any room.

New Venture Christian Fellowship Upgrades AV Capabilities With Vista Spyder X20

Oceanside, California’s New Venture Christian Fellowship, near San Diego, renovated its worship facilities and upgraded its AV capabilities with stunning new projection capabilities and content managed by a Vista Spyder X20-0808 video processor.

Integrator and consultant CCI Solutions of Olympia, Washington, installed three big screens at the 1,000-seat sanctuary. A 22-foot wide screen acts as the backdrop for the pastor while two nearly 40-foot wide screens flank the central display and show IMAG, text and PIP windows. Five 15,000-lumen 2K projectors are configured with two edge-blended units for the left and right screens and a single unit for the central screen. The Vista Spyder X20 manages the content across the entire environment (sanctuary) that now engages congregants more fully in the worship service.

“The pastor really wanted to envelope the congregation in whatever he’s talking about,” said Rick Boring, senior systems consultant with CCI Solutions. “Spyder is phenomenal; it gives them a canvas for anything they want to do.”

An HP touch panel acts as the front-end interface for the system and content sources include live cameras with a matrix switcher, six Macs, a professional HD video player and several net nodes. The new infrastructure also allows six additional projectors to deliver 180-degree displays.

Boring described a typical application: “I can have a background texture or theme that goes across all the screens and can do images within all of them, and match the onscreen colors to the lighting.

“The Vista Spyder X20 is easy to use but incredibly powerful and was chosen because with other systems you’re limited to working ‘their way.’ Spyder provides the edge blending we need and gives you a huge canvas where you can do whatever you want. You don’t have to restrict resolution or creativity,” Boring concluded.
