Vizrt integrates with OpenStreetMap to provide global street maps for broadcasters

Vizrt announced today that it has upgraded the map and geographical animations tool, Viz World, to integrate with OpenStreetMap (OSM). With the new integration, Viz World users can access OSM community data from within the Viz World interface, effectively allowing Vizrt’s customers access to vector street data for most of the world.

OpenStreetMap is an open source online map database accessible at www.openstreetmaps.org. It provides a free, editable map of the world through the efforts of many contributors around the world.

For Vizrt customers, OSM street data is converted to shape files by an OSM approved 3rd party. The shape files are then converted to a format that is optimized for use in Vizrt’s rendering engine. The conversion makes it faster to render the vectors and search the database. Using a downloader interface, broadcasters load the data for their region or anywhere in the world where the data is needed. The data is then searched by street, address, intersection or point of interest.

Vizrt will update the extensive street data provided by the OpenStreetMap community to its servers twice a year to provide the latest street mapping information to its customers.

To recognize OSM for its pioneering work providing this global street map database, Vizrt is requiring customers who use OSM data to place an attribution on the screen with the simple text attribution of “OpenStreetMap.”

“OpenStreetMap has created an invaluable and high-quality geographic database.” said Petter Ole Jakobsen, CTO of Vizrt. “We hope this attribution gives the community the recognition it deserves, while serving our customers the highest quality maps so they can accurately report on world events.”

About Vizrt:

Vizrt provides real-time 3D graphics and asset management tools for the broadcast industry – from award-winning animations & maps to online publishing tools. Vizrt’s products are used by the world’s leading broadcasters and publishing houses, including: CNN, CBS, Fox, the BBC, BSkyB, ITN, ZDF, Star TV, Network 18, TV Today, CCTV, NHK, The Globe and Mail, Times Online, The Telegraph, and Welt Online. Furthermore, many world-class production houses and corporate institutions such as the Stock Exchanges in New York and London use Vizrt systems.

Lightware U.S.A. Releases Lightware Plus Line of DVI Matrix Switchers with Built-in Power Supplies

Lightware U.S.A., the US distributor of Budapest-based Lightware Visual Engineering productions, is pleased to announce that its latest DVI matrix switchers, the Lightware Plus line, will begin shipping in December. The new MX9x9DVI-Plus, MX12x12DVI-Plus and MX16x16DVI-Plus feature a built-in power supply for the first time.

“With built-in power supplies, the Lightware Plus matrix switchers offer an all-in-one solution to customers who don’t have space for rack-mounted power supplies. That means added convenience for rental and staging markets as well as permanent installations,” says Blake Dudash in sales and marketing.

Lightware Plus was developed in response to customer requests for such a feature, he reports. “The new Lightware Plus line provides more options to help them meet their needs,” Dudash notes.

Routing up to 16×16 DVI 1.0 signals, the matrix switchers have a 7-inch depth, 4 RU-high body and low fan noise, which make them idea for many space- and noise-sensitive applications. The frames incorporate Lightware’s Advanced EDID Management function, which enables users to emulate any EDID on the switcher’s inputs independently, read out and store any attached monitor’s EDID in 100 internal memory locations, and upload and download EDID files using Remote Control software. The crosspoint switcher can be controlled through a 9-pole D-sub connector via RS-232 or RS-422 protocol and IP-based Ethernet connection, including web access through a Neutrik EtherCON connection ensuring a robust connection at all times.

With 1920×1200 or 2048×1080 maximal resolution, the Lightware Plus matrix switchers offer no switching latency (zero frame delay) and can route HDMI 1.3 signals (with embedded audio) without HDCP. They feature gold-plated PCB boards and connectors, front panel buttons control, a built-in website and Vista Spyder and Barco Encore compatibility.

“We’re very excited about Lightware Plus and are eager to see customer reactions to it,” says Dudash. The new matrix switchers are ideal for multi-room video control, professional AV systems, conference rooms and critical avionics and military applications.

The HBO Studio Goes Live with Xytech’s MediaPulse

Mission Critical, 72-Hour Integration Successfully Ensures Smooth Transition for Studio

(Mission Hills, CA) Xytech, the global leader in facility management software for the broadcast and media services industries, announced that their MediaPulse platform has been launched at HBO Studios in New York. A carefully orchestrated, multi-stage implementation plan, configured to the needs of HBO’s Production Operations at the HBO Studio, preceded the installation. A live deployment was then conducted over one weekend, with all users brought successfully online Monday morning.

Located in Manhattan, HBO Studios provides production services for internal and external clients creating and packaging promotional and programming content for series, specials, documentaries, movies, and sports. Services include editing, audio mixing, graphics, and file-based asset management. The installation was a success, as the Xytech and HBO teams were able to deploy the MediaPulse platform, with integrations, on time.

For the HBO Studio, MediaPulse provides job management, scheduling, integration to HBO’s accounting system, and notifications throughout the enterprise system.

Greg Dolan, COO of Xytech, described how the HBO project was executed, “Our team evaluated the needs of HBO Production Operations and recommended a suite of MediaPulse services. To say there was no room for error is an understatement. Xytech partnered with HBO to plan and execute a large-scale implementation of software that we knew was going to be challenging, and was critical to HBO’s operations. With a limited time frame to execute, the volume of assets involved, and the time-dependent nature of the work that travels through the pipeline at the HBO Studio, the project required meticulous planning. The carefully thought-out implementation plan ended with a full scale Go Live deadline, which had their system ready for studio and editorial on Monday morning.”

Lynne Chernow, Senior Vice President of Application Development at HBO, said, “The planning and deployment of MediaPulse clearly demonstrated technical expertise, team work, and a focus on getting the job done. Clear thinking and effective customer care won the day. We hit our deadlines and benchmarks with no interruption of our services. Xytech helped us deliver a crucial system, and the manner in which the integration was executed was exemplary.”

Concluded Dolan, “Our collaborative MediaPulse platform was designed to accommodate today’s multifaceted workflows as exemplified by the HBO Studio. They are continually delivering world-class content, and we are honored to be working with them.”

GC Pro Keeps Morehouse College at the Cutting Edge of Sound

— GC Pro’s Atlanta office has been the key resource for one of America’s most prestigious African-American colleges, as they have equipped the college’s Ray Charles Performing Arts Center and
King Chapel with live sound technology —

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, December 3, 2012 — Morehouse College, a beacon of men’s liberal-arts education, particularly for African Americans, has given the country its share of Rhodes Scholars, ministers, economists and doctors, but it seems to have a special affinity for the arts. Graduates include filmmaker Spike Lee, actor Samuel L. Jackson, and rapper Lil Jon. So not surprisingly, the college has tried to keep its performance venues, including the King Chapel and the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center and Music Academic Building, at the cutting edge of live-sound technology. Helping them do just that is Guitar Center Professional (GC Pro), the outside sales division of Guitar Center that focuses on the needs of professional users, which has become the first-call provider of live-sound equipment and advice for Morehouse College over the last several years.

Most recently, GC Pro’s Atlanta office provided a dB Technologies DVA T4 line array sound system for the college’s King Chapel, which regularly hosts musical performances in addition to religious events and ceremonies. The system is configured into two six-box hangs on either side of the stage. And last year, GC Pro was the resource to which the college turned to upgrade the sound for the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center and Music Academic Building, a $20-million, 76,000-square-foot facility built in 2010. There, GC Pro provided a new Avid Venue D-Show FOH console with an integrated Avid Pro Tools HD multitrack recording system with FOH and stage racks as well as a large selection of microphones. GC Pro also outfitted the Center’s recording studio with a new SSL AWS 900 analog recording and mix console. Whatever the college’s needs when it comes to pro audio technology and products, GC Pro has been there with the resources, prices and advice that they needed.

“We pointed out to the college that they could save a considerable amount of money by buying a new PA system for King Chapel rather then continuing to rent systems, as they had been doing,” explains Eugene McNair, Jr., Account Manager for the Atlanta GC Pro office, who has had a close relationship with Morehouse College for years. “They were familiar with the dB Technologies system so we went with that one. We also sold them cases for the system, which lets them take it down as needed and store it, which gives them that much more flexibility with the system.”

McNair says this sale underscores the kind of relationship that GC Pro has developed with Morehouse College, and with many of its institutional customers. “They’re sensitive to price, of course, but anyone can offer a better price,” he says. “What Morehouse College is most interested in is service from someone who understands their needs and the technologies and products that can best fulfill those needs. They want service, honesty, knowledge, and even some personality. It’s not just about the sale – it’s about the relationship. I’m local, we’re local, we’re here for them when they need us.”

GC Pro Keeps The Studio at the Palms at the Cutting Edge with Three New Avid Pro Tools HDX Systems

— GC Pro continues to be the first call for The Studio at the Palms for its professional audio technology needs —

Las Vegas-based Studio at the Palms, located at the fabulous Palms Casino Resort and which has hosted such artists as Lady Gaga, Ne-Yo, The Killers, LMFAO and others, recently upgraded with three new Avid Pro Tools HDX systems. The new systems were installed in Studio X and Studio Y, along with a “floater” system that lets any space in the studio become a fully compatible recording environment. The HDX systems, sourced and supplied through Guitar Center Professional (GC Pro), the outside sales division of Guitar Center that focuses on the needs of professional users, join the other gear that GC Pro has sourced for the facility over the years.

“We really pride ourselves on being state-of-the-art here and always ready at a moment’s notice to serve our clients,” says Studio at the Palms Director Zoe Thrall, noting that artists working on long-term projects or just passing through Las Vegas for performances or for awards shows often use some of their time there to record new tracks or finish up existing ones. “They expect the best from us, and that’s what we strive to deliver.”

Thrall, one of the most respected studio managers in the entire industry (prior to coming to the Studio at the Palms, she supervised operations for The Hit Factory and Avatar Studios in New York City), says GC Pro has been an invaluable resource in keeping her studios at the cutting edge of music technology. “They really know their stuff, and they can get me what I need quickly and cost-effectively,” she says, noting that she’s purchased DSP and software system through GC Pro, as well as used them as a portal to the vast inventory of musical instruments and equipment available at Guitar Center itself. “My relationship with GC Pro goes back to the New York days, and wherever I’ve worked with GC Pro, it’s always been a great experience,” she adds.

Las Vegas-based GC Pro Sales Associate Don Hartley, who handles the Studio at the Palms account, says that clients at that level need the kind of attention only a full-service, high-end pro-dealer can offer. “We give a facility like Studio at the Palms a concierge level of service, because that’s what they require in order to serve that caliber of clientele,” says Hartley, who will often personally bring equipment to the studio on short notice when necessary. “The Studio at the Palms has a huge inventory of great equipment, and a fantastic tech specialist in Brent Spear, who did the entire installation of the new Pro Tools HDX systems himself. But GC Pro is always here to fill in any gaps they may encounter – from a console to a guitar stand – any day, any time.”
