SSI Upgrades Audio Monitoring to 7.1 with Genelec 8260A and 8250A Active Monitors and 7271A Sub

— Leading Hollywood post production facility chooses Genelec to help them expand their film trailer post capabilities to 7.1 while relying on Genelec’s award-winning 8200 Smart Active Monitoring (SAM) system to keep the studio’s acoustics perfectly tuned —

SSI, a leading Hollywood audio and video post production company specializing in cinema trailers, has purchased a new 7.1 monitoring system by Genelec, the world’s longstanding pioneer in active monitoring. The new system, which was installed in September and consists of three Genelec 8260A Tri-Amplified Active Monitors for the L-C-R array, four Genelec 8250A Bi-Amplified Active Monitors for the rear and side surrounds, and a Genelec 7271A Active Subwoofer, was chosen to help SSI further expand its leading role as a post production resource for trailers for top Hollywood films. These include The Hobbit, Rise of the Guardians, Cloud Atlas and the upcoming Brad Pitt film World War Z. All three of these products reflect Genelec’s recently introduced Smart Active Monitor (SAM) concept, which allows monitors to be controlled with digital networking to enable the building of highly flexible computer-controlled systems of monitors.

This purchase also continues SSI’s longstanding tradition of being an all-Genelec facility for its audio studios, with all seven of its mix rooms fitted with Genelec speakers, including 8240A speakers for stereo monitoring. SSI provides a range of services to the film industry, including 5.1 theatrical trailer mixing, 5.1 digital audio sweetening, sound design, telecine, full service audio transfers and digital delivery services. RSPE Audio Solutions in Los Angeles sold the Genelec speakers to SSI.

The decision to buy and install new Genelec monitoring was based on two key things, according to Gary Fradkin, SSI’s Director of Engineering, who also designed the studio with SSI Mixer Matt Guiler and noted studio designer Scott Putnam. “We love they way Genelec active monitors sound, and the DSP system enables us to keep the studio tuned properly at all times,” Fradkin explains. “In the past, we’d have to have the room periodically analyzed and re-tuned as things changed. Now, with SAM, the speakers literally take care of themselves.” Genelec’s award-winning DSP Technology and GLM software provide powerful and practical tools such as AutoCal for automatic and accurate alignment, calibration and control of the monitoring system in all situations. But, says Fradkin, that’s only half the story behind SSI’s affinity for Genelec. “Sonically speaking, the accuracy of their imaging in 5.1 and 7.1 is far superior to anything else out on the market,” he says. “They just sound great, all the time, on everything.”

GC Pro Helps Trenton, New Jersey’s Pentecostal Church Assembly of God Make Its Big Move

— Growing church had to move to larger quarters across the street, and GC Pro made sure that it was ready for them when it came to sound —

The Pentecostal Church Assembly of God in Trenton, New Jersey, had the kind of problem many churches pray for: they just keep on growing. Fortunately for this congregation, a former house of worship became available right across the street. Having also been used as a school, the main sanctuary had been converted into a gymnasium, and Assembly of God ventured to convert it back into a worship space. This was certainly a blessing for the church’s membership, but a lot more space to fill in terms of sound. That’s when they called on Guitar Center Professional (GC Pro), the outside sales division of Guitar Center that focuses on the needs of professional users, which brought to bear the huge range of services that only GC Pro can offer.

With GC Pro Senior Account Manager Billy Walker coordinating the effort, JBL Professional engineers were called upon to provide analysis and design based on drawings by Malvicino Design Group, a Forest Hills, New York-based GC Pro Affiliate Services Program member. Working with GC Pro personnel, the JBL Professional engineers created several sound system designs for the church’s executive board to consider. Then, GC Pro called upon Horacio Malvicino, Managing Director of the Malvicino Design Group, for further design consultation and to install and tune the JBL VerTec and VRX line array PA systems, as well as the Midas Pro 2 FOH console, that the church had decided upon. The project was finished in August 2012.

Deciding on a complex and costly new sound system can be a trying proposition for any church, and GC Pro has as much or more experience in the HOW sector of pro audio than any other retailer in the world. Knowing how crucial this decision would be for the church, Walker arranged with local JBL rep firm Sigmet Corp. to host a demo of the JBL VerTec system at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in nearby York, Pennsylvania, so the church leaders could see, hear and experience the systems first hand.

“PA systems aren’t just about the sound, though that’s their most important aspect,” Walker explains. “They also have to have certain visual elements — they have to be able to blend in well with the rest of the church’s interior, and when they are seen they have to look good. Bob Reuther at Sigmet arranged for us to have a night at the Strand to ourselves, and the church could get all the time they needed seeing and hearing the JBL PA systems, until they felt comfortable with them.”

And they did. After the church made its decision, the Malvicino Design Group began the installation process, using the VerTec enclosures for the two main line array hangs and the VRX boxes for delay fills for the rear of the new larger church. “That’s the kind of comprehensive service we can bring to the HOW market,” says Walker. “We have the ability to source systems from many manufacturers, help churches pick the ones that are best for their needs, and even provide installation and integration services in a seamless, one-stop manner. It’s the best way to make the customer comfortable for a big purchase like this.”

Genelec Introduces New Smart Active Monitor™ (SAM™) Concept

— SAMs are Genelec active audio monitoring systems that also have the capability and intelligence enabling them to adapt automatically and flexibly to their acoustical environments through a set of proprietary tools —

Genelec, the world’s longstanding pioneer in active monitoring, has introduced its new Smart Active Monitor™ (SAM™) concept. As part of a new streamlined marketing effort, Genelec has folded its line of DSP monitors under the SAM classification, which now includes all Genelec monitors with a 82xx product name (for instance, the award-winning 8260A Tri-Amplified DSP Monitor System). Models in the SAM range are capable of automatically adapting to acoustical environments to offer an indispensable tool for sound professionals in broadcasting, post production, music studios and more. A SAM system can be controlled with digital networking, enabling users to build highly flexible computer-controlled systems of monitors.

Dr. Aki V. Mäkivirta, Genelec Research and Development Manager, noted, “Smart Active Monitoring is a concept that bundles all the benefits of Genelec’s advanced monitoring systems to a single, easily understandable and descriptive term. SAM is also a concept that describes perfectly the current technology leap pioneered by Genelec in the evolution of the active monitoring loudspeaker – the transition from the analog to the digital world, where digital technologies, along with software features, increase quality and bring unique user experiences to the customers, and enable seamless integration of monitoring speakers and subwoofers to a well-calibrated and correctly aligned reproduction system. At Genelec, we believe that progress towards Smart Active Monitors will open a new era in the development of the audio monitoring industry.”

The acoustical features of SAMs can be optimized with automatic calibration for different working styles or client demands. Such adaptations include aligning levels at the listening position, adjusting delays from the signal input to the listening location, and compensating for the acoustical room influences in the frequency responses (equalization). One of these proprietary tools is AutoCal™, Genelec´s acoustic calibration solution that is supplied alongside the Genelec Loudspeaker Management software package, GLM. SAM effectively reflects the most advanced monitoring system features available in the audio industry. The capabilities of SAMs are also future-proof and can be increased later with software upgrades both in the monitoring speakers themselves and in the system management software.

Will Eggleston, Genelec USA Marketing Director, stated, “The SAM launch marks the beginning of a new era in audio monitoring for Genelec, thanks to the rise of digital technology and evolving market expectations about the possibilities of audio monitors. Also, designers of systems have shown that digital monitors have some notable capabilities beyond the analog realm. SAM embodies the shift from the analog to the digital world, looking at increasing sound quality and the listening experience of the user while allowing the integration of monitors and subs into a correctly aligned reproduction system.”

Using GLM software and AutoCal™, a monitor can be turned into the reference it needs to be in today’s demanding environment for engineers. This improves performance and not only helps the user to achieve a flat frequency response at listening position but also handles phase alignment in between monitors and subwoofer and not least time-of-flight compensation, the latter of high importance when retro-fitting systems in existing rooms where equal distance between all monitors and listening position may not be possible to respect.

In addition to the traditional building blocks of an active monitoring speaker, SAMs contain the following building blocks:

Digital signal processing of the audio signal instead of traditional analog filtering, making SAMs very flexible and precise.
Control networking, enabling SAMs to form a seamless reproductions system, fully controllable at the main listening position.
Acoustical measurement system, enabling multipoint measurements of acoustical environment at the listening area.
Sophisticated automatic system calibration algorithm, enabling SAMs to adapt to their acoustic environments and to be integrated as a full reproduction system.
Graphical User Interface, enabling users to interact with all components of the monitoring system and to customize the system to best fit to the environments and applications.

Paradise by the PixelFLEX LED Curtain for Meatloaf Tour

To simplify the video presentation during his most recent tour without sacrificing results, while also making life a lot easier for his road crew, legendary performer Meatloaf turned to PixelFLEX, designer and manufacturer of the industry’s most flexible, lightweight LED video screen solution.

During the multi-city, three month tour, PixelFLEX provided a custom-made14-panel, 20mm LED Curtain that offered ease of set-up while delivering high-quality video images to support the rock star’s nightly performance. The company’s 20MM Curtain features 2,500 pixels PSM (Per Square Meter) and 3240 brightness. To support the Meatloaf tour, PixelFLEX developed custom-size panels, totaling approximately 16.8′tall x 29.4′ wide.

For Louis Smith, long-time video technician working with notable performers such as Sting, Eminem, 50 Cent, Korn and Stevie Nicks, the PixelFLEX LED Curtain was the ideal solution for the Meatloaf tour.

“It’s a great system,” Smith said. “You can’t beat the weight. It goes up and down easy – two people can have the system down and in the truck in 45 minutes. But the fact that the whole thing fits into five feet of truck is really what separates the PixelFLEX Curtain from other LED video solutions. It’s THE solution for one-truck tours.”

Flexible in all directions and exceptionally durable, PixelFLEX LED Curtains are able to bend and shape around structures for a more creative display effect. It’s that flexibility that Meatloaf hopes to take advantage of on the next leg of his tour, tentatively scheduled for April 2013.

“Meatloaf was so impressed with the PixelFLEX video screen that he wants to wrap the whole stage with the LED Curtain when we hit the road in 2013,” Smith revealed. “As the person responsible for having to set that up, it’s comforting to know that we’ll be able to do so without taking up multiple trucks with the video system or spending hours putting it together.”
