Milne Stadium Keeps it Contained with Community R-Series

Albuquerque, NM – December 2012….. For nearly 60 years Milne Stadium has been home to generations of Albuquerque’s local sporting events. Recently the 6500-seat arena received a wide-ranging makeover, including a new playing surface, new paint and stucco, and a new audio system featuring Community R-Series loudspeakers.

As Sound and Signal Systems’ William Hartley explains, the stadium’s previous sound system had been problematic for some time. “A few years ago they installed a new scoreboard behind the end zone, complete with a long-throw, single-point line array system. A lot of sound was reflecting off the concrete and glass press box. The problem is, the stadium is surrounded on three sides by the city and the freeway, but the side opposite the press box faces a residential area.”

One of two municipal stadiums serving the Albuquerque School District and surrounding community, the park is busy throughout most of the year. “Sometimes they’ve got two or even three events in a single day,” says Hartley. “So they were getting a lot of noise complaints. It got to the point where they had to turn the system down so low it could barely be heard in the park. It was a compromise that served no one.”

It eventually became a safety issue as well when stadium officials tried to evacuate fans during a lightning storm. “A lot of people couldn’t hear the announcement,” says Hartley. “That’s when the city approached us to find a solution.”

Hartley continues, “We decided to put the speakers on the press box, closer to the audience, and direct the sound down toward the seats and the field.” A pair of R.5-94Z loudspeakers and an R.5SUB subwoofer are mounted on either side of the press box, covering the main seating area and the field. A single R2 long-throw loudspeaker covers the smaller visitor side bleachers. “We took an R2 with a 50 by 20 coverage pattern and flipped it on its side to give us 20 degrees of horizontal coverage and 50 degrees of vertical. We angled it down the field so it’s hitting just the top of the bleachers and none of the houses behind it.” Another R.5SUB augments the R2′s coverage area.

“They’ve got a separate volume control for the R2,” adds Harley. “So they can turn it down if they’ve got a small crowd and don’t need coverage to those seats.” The system is powered by a Bose Power Match amplifier, with a Bose Control Space DSP unit handling system processing.

Hartley says the new sound system has virtually eliminated the neighbors’ noise complaints, while offering a dramatic improvement inside the stadium. “They just love it. They can play music and they can hear the announcements without bothering the neighbors. They’re able to run the system at 100 or 110 dB and you can’t hear it outside the stadium. It’s a really, really full sounding system.”

New Renkus-Heinz Distributor for France Announced

Bernay-Vilbert, France – December 2012… Renkus-Heinz is delighted to announce the appointment of a new distributor for France, signing an agreement with leading French distribution company SoundCo to handle the distribution of Renkus-Heinz products for the French market. They will also cover the North Africa countries Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, on a non-exclusive basis.

With offices in the Paris suburb and a sales agent team, SoundCo offers its customers support throughout the country.

The company works in all of the entertainment technology sectors including the live sound / PA rental market, the MI market (including both online and retail outlets), installation and system integration companies and the broadcast industry, and more besides.

HARMAN’s Studer Compact Remote Bay Gets Its Maiden Voyage at Colorado Sound Recording Studios

WESTMINSTER, Colorado — Colorado Sound Recording Studios is one of the finest facilities in the state. The studio and its remote truck have recorded artists including Norah Jones, Eminem, Steve Miller, Dave Matthews and many others. Recently, the HARMAN Soundcraft Studer truck rolled into Colorado Sound with the new Studer Compact Remote Bay and its latest Virtual Vista software for its first-ever use at a recording session.

The Compact Remote Bay allows access to a Studer Vista digital mixing console’s settings from anywhere in a venue. A little larger than a laptop, the unit has 12 P&G faders, 40 rotary controls and a 19-inch touchscreen running Studer’s Virtual Vista software. In addition to remote operation, the bay may be used to extend the main console’s control surface for a second operator, for monitor mixing or for other functions.

“We used the Compact Remote Bay to record a studio session band to allow Colorado Sound and HD NET and the Mobile TV Group who were also at the session to put the Compact Remote Bay through its paces,” said Rob Lewis, Director of US Sales for Studer. “We put the Compact Remote Bay in the recording studio’s tracking room and interfaced it with the Vista 9 console in the truck to record the piano, bass and drums session band.”

Three stereo headphone mixes, a 5.1 surround and a stereo control room mix were created, all going to the Vista 9 and the Compact Remote Bay with a Studer Stagebox connecting the recording studio feed to the truck via fiber cable.

“As we were getting recording and headphone levels, we tweaked the musicians’ headphone levels with the Compact Remote Bay. Of course everything was really being adjusted via the Vista 9 on the truck, but the Compact Remote Bay made things a lot easier since we could get immediate comments from the musicians and tweak everything right in the room without the need for talkback from the control room in the truck,” Lewis noted. “It worked flawlessly.”

“After we tracked the band we just moved the Compact Remote Bay from the tracking room into Colorado Sound’s main control room and patched in the stereo mix,” Lewis continued. “This allowed the engineers to use the bay and have a feel for the setup’s overall sound quality, dynamics, EQ and so on from the comfort of their control room using their main studio monitors. They were astounded by how we were able to do this without effort, and how easy it was to make patch changes and snapshots without missing a beat.”

Broadcast Pix Simplifies Multi-Camera Production for Finland’s Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced the Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos in Inari, Finland, is using a Granite™ 1000 Video Control Center™ for live event production. Built to preserve and develop Sámi culture and business, the modern facility was completed in January and has hosted a variety of events, including seminars, workshops, and concerts.

“Granite is a good solution because of the powerful features and because it is a cost effective HD video control system,” said Mikko Juntunen, systems specialist, production and post, for Mediatrade in Helsinki, Finland, the systems integrator that installed the system. “The integrated switcher and clip server – and options such as Panasonic camera control – were also important issues in planning the system integration.”

Sajos offers several venues for events, from small and medium-sized conference rooms to a main hall that can accommodate up to 430 people. Multi-camera productions have been streamed on the Internet, recorded for event organizers, distributed on the facility’s internal television channel, and used to provide I-MAG (image magnification) for live audiences. Juntunen said the facility uses a variety of Granite’s built-in workflow tools, including the Fluent™ Clip Store, Harris Inscriber CG, customizable Fluent-View multi-viewer, and chromakey. Granite may also be used as the clip server for all screenings during Skabmagovat 2013, an upcoming film festival, according to Juntenen.

“Granite is an all-in-one package,” said Joonas Saari of the Sajos Centre. “It has made the multi-camera tasks, such as live streaming and video projection projects possible.”

Berklee Opens World-Class Recording/Teaching Studio Complex At New Valencia International Campus

VALENCIA: December 17, 2012 – Berklee College of Music, the world’s premier learning lab for contemporary music, and Walters-Storyk Design Group, renowned for their work on studios for Jimi Hendrix, Alicia Keys, and Bruce Springsteen, today announced the completion of a cutting edge recording/teaching complex at Berklee’s Valencia campus. Berklee’s new state-of-the-art campus is located at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, Spain. The studio facility is the final element of Berklee’s first international campus, which recently launched its master’s programs.

The audio production and teaching complex is comprised of five inter-related components. The 1600 sq. ft. scoring stage/studio – Studio K – includes an 860 sq. ft. live room with 15-foot ceilings and boasts variable acoustic wall treatments developed for diverse recording configurations. The studio’s windows provide fantastic views of the Palau and allow the public to view Berklee’s music activities. Supporting the live room is a 500 sq. ft. control room, two 250 sq. ft. ISO/overdub booths, and an isolated machine room. The aggregate advantages of the control room configuration fully supports Berklee’s primary teaching mandate. Each aspect of the studio coalesces to form an indisputably world-class recording complex.

“Our master’s students and visiting artists will benefit from an extremely sophisticated studio environment. This is an extraordinary educational tool, expressly designed to prepare them for their transition from student to music professional,” explained Guillermo Cisneros, Berklee Vice President for Global Initiatives, and Executive Director, Berklee in Valencia.

“The studio complex needed to make a statement in a design-conscious country, and be technically and acoustically capable of representing a desirable destination for professional work,” said Carl Beatty, Berklee Chief of Staff, who has headed the project since the beginning of the Palau de les Arts renovation. “We decided to employ Avid/Euphonix controllers to take advantage of their Eucon protocol that allows seamless migration of projects across the facility, all the way up to the flagship System 5. Additionally, when we install an identical console in Boston, we will be doing real time joint sessions between the two locations via Internet 2 technology.”

The entire facility is configured through a central machine room for speed, ease of turnaround, and high interconnectivity between rooms, including the Palau de les Arts’ concert halls. The System 5 has 48 channels, with 128 channels of I/O, and 176 mic lines. There is a broad selection of analog processing with plenty of room for additions should the need arise.

Monitoring in the production suites is all Genelec – 5.1 surround in Studio A, and 2.1 stereo in Studios B, C, and D. The control room in Studio K features the Meyers Acheron 7.1 surround monitoring system, an acknowledged industry standard. The room also includes Griffin G2B Active main stereo monitors. “These monitors are impressive. Along with their dual 15″ subwoofers, the use of ribbon tweeters gives the speaker a very impressive transient response and high-mid articulation,” said Beatty. “There are also mid field monitors available- ProAc’s and Yamaha NS-10′s. Additionally, the room has been designed to Dolby specifications and readied for the new Dolby Atmos(tm) Cinema Sound monitoring protocol. This facility is an integral component of the comprehensive, modern Music Technology Complex developed for Berklee’s Valencia campus.”

Commenting on the new complex, architect/acoustician John Storyk remarked: “Berklee’s new Valencia recording/teaching studio raises the benchmark for European audio education. We have been the designers for dozens of educational recording environments around the world and are incredibly proud of our tenure at Berklee, both at the Valencia and Boston campuses.”

Impressed by the quality of the recording studio at the Berklee campus, visiting master class instructor and former Fox Music President, Robert Kraft commented, “The recording studio is an amazing asset to have in Valencia, and has the potential to be even more of a reason for students and professionals to come to the Berklee facilities.”

“The recording studios and production suites at Berklee Valencia are simply sublime,” said composer and visiting professor, Laura Karpman. “In the studios I was able to compose, record, and mix a film for Sony/Lifetime with a very fast turnaround. The results were fabulous. It was a pleasure to make music there.”

Token Creek Mobile Television Acquires a Dozen New FUJINON Lenses

Wayne, N.J. – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division announces the recent sale of 12 of its lenses to Wisconsin-based Token Creek Mobile Television. The mobile broadcast production company acquired four XA88x8.8BESM Telephoto Field lenses, six ZA12x4.5BERM Super Wide Angle ENG/EFP lenses, and two XA101x8.9BESM Super Telephoto Field lenses. Nine of the lenses are being used in Token Creek’s newest HD mobile unit, Chippewa, while the others have been outfitted in two of their other mobile trucks, Varsity and Hiawatha.

“We’ve been a customer of FUJINON lenses for a long time, and have been continually pleased with the quality of their products,” said John Salzwedel, President of Token Creek Mobile TV. “When rolling out our newest HD production truck, it was an easy decision for us to include FUJINON HD lenses. We’ve been particularly happy with the cost of their lenses and the company’s excellent customer service.”

The FUJINON XA101x8.9 lens features a combination of wide angle and 101x zoom range, and the XA88x8.8 offers the industry’s widest angle in class with an 88x zoom range. Both telephoto field lenses feature FUJINON’s exclusive anti-fogging design to minimize lens fogging and reduce downtime due to climate change. The FUJINON ZA12x4.5BERM ENG lens features a 2x range extender and Digital Quick & Cruise Zoom. The Chippewa HD mobile unit was first used for a Thanksgiving Day parade telecast in Detroit. The next day, the truck was used for production of the Chicago Public School City Football Championship Game at Soldier Field, home of the NFL’s Chicago Bears. Chippewa is also set to be used for NBA game coverage, and is expected to be in high demand for many upcoming live sporting events.

Martin Audio Installed In New Chicago Mega Sports Bar/Nightclub


Encompass Technologies just completed a major sound and video installation for the sizeable new restaurant/sports bar/nightclub, John Barleycorn River North in downtown Chicago.

The fast-growing integrator had worked on a host of other venues for owners Sam Sanchez and Michael Gonzalez. As Tim Pickett, principal for Encompass, explains, “There are four John Barleycorns and we’ve been involved with all of them, two from the ground up and two complete rehabs. Sam and Michael also own two Moe’s Cantina clubs that we worked on.

“For John Barleycorn River North, they definitely raised the bar several notches with a substantial budget of $285,000,” adds Pickett. “Unlike the club in Schaumburg where there was a focus on live sound, John Barleycorn North functions as a sports bar and restaurant during the day and becomes a nightclub with a DJ upstairs that can hold up to 1500 people on Friday and Saturday nights.

“The audio system had to be very versatile so they can turn it up late at night for that nightclub sound and feel while providing more controlled sound levels for the sports bar patrons so that everybody can hear it the same way.

“Martin Audio was the obvious choice,” Pickett continues, “because the owners had the speakers in their other clubs and were very happy with the sound and performance. We used 32 AQ28 cabinets throughout the club along with six AQ212’s, four AQ215’s, three F12’s and Martin Audio MA 4.8Q and 6.8Q amplifiers. Two Symetrix Jupiter 8 systems provided turnkey audio processing.
I also want to acknowledge Jack Alexander who tweaked and EQ’d the site to help make it sound even better.”

John Barleycorn North replaces a two-story antique store that was completely gutted and outfitted with new furnishings, audio and a 72-screen video system including five video walls. According to Pickett, “part of the décor includes a glass roof that’s about 50 feet long and 20 feet wide and because they’re located in downtown Chicago, you can look up and see nothing but skyscrapers all around you. It’s a very impressive venue.”

Designed to provide the ultimate in sports viewing, the video system includes 12 Cima 46” LCD and 24 Tovis 46” LCD Ultra Narrow Video Wall Panels, 35 Samsung 60” Plasma Panels, two Samsung 46” LED Panels and a Sharp 80” LED Panel. The complex video switching system for both floors includes one Knox Chameleon 16X64 HD Matrix upstairs and one Knox Chameleon 16X32 HD Matrix downstairs with a Knox Touchscreen control system that functions via iPad.

The whole project took about fourteen months from start to finish and the club has been up and running for about three weeks. Asked about the installation, owner Sam Sanchez commented, “I’ve always been really impressed with Martin Audio. We’ve been using the brand since 2008 at our locations. What’s great is, that at any level, the sound is clear and intelligible. It works if you’re watching the game, or partying the night away. Encompass has done a great job installing the systems and making them just right. I really love that I can call them 24 hours a day any day for tech support.”
