Faith Assembly of God Installs FOR-A’S HVS-350HS Video Switcher as Central Video Production Hub of New Campus

Fort Lee, N.J.– When Faith Assembly Church moved from their main campus in Orlando, Florida to a nearby significantly larger 300,000 square foot space, the organization had big plans of making their megachurch technically savvy on a tight budget. After two and a half years of construction, the first phase of the process is finished, and the church recently opened its doors for services. Included in the list of new equipment installed and key to the church’s video production is a FOR-A HVS-350HS HD/SD 1.5 M/E Video Switcher, which is set in the video control room of the complex. The Encore Broadcast Solutions team, led by Jeff Cameron of the company’s Winter Springs, FL, office, provided systems integration services on this large-scale project. Encore was tasked with design, sales, and installation of all audio, video, and lighting systems in the entire complex.

“We put a lot of time and effort into determining the products that would best fit the church’s needs,” said Gadiel Marquez, Encore’s systems design engineer. “We chose FOR-A’s switcher because of the flexibility it offers. The HVS-350HS brings powerful production value, and has the ability to easily accommodate all of Faith Assembly’s video production needs. Our experience with FOR-A equipment is that their products are extremely reliable and long lasting. We believe that with the HVS-350HS switcher, we’ve prepped Faith Assembly for a long future of dependable video production.”

Faith Assembly utilizes video in a variety of ways, including live streaming of church services to reach its audience in multiple continents, streaming of baptisms, concert production, and production of wedding ceremonies.

The main campus includes six main venues, each with full audio, video, and lighting capabilities. They are: the main sanctuary, the wedding chapel, two theaters for children, an atrium and a dining hall. The entire complex is completely integrated, with HD/SDI capability from one location to the next and a common intercom channel that runs throughout the entire campus. To simplify the learning curve for the church’s mix of paid employees and volunteer staff, all buildings on the property have the exact same video package.

“We did this to allow our personnel to familiarize themselves with the technology in one control room, then walk into another venue and have the exact same setup to deal with,” said Robb Hawks, Faith Assembly’s Executive Pastor. “We’ve made video production easier in other ways too. All of the equipment in our dining hall is on rolling racks, so that we can easily transport the gear to another room if needed. The ability to quickly move production equipment from one venue to the next is particularly handy as we move forward with our next phase of construction in different areas of the complex.”

The 2,700-seat auditorium in the main sanctuary features a multi-screen configuration, including a 60-foot wide main center screen and DPI Quad Projectors. Faith Assembly selected Hitachi HD cameras, which they felt offered excellent high definition quality with a reasonable price tag. The cameras are equipped with Angenieux lenses and are set in the sound booth in the back of the auditorium. The church is also equipped with Turbo Sound speakers.

In all of the design criterion within the new Faith Assembly campus, there is a strict attention to detail. For example, to streamline the process of checking people into the church for various activities, an automated system was installed to quickly sign family members into different venues. A 9×16 LED jumbo screen video wall was purchased from the Orlando Magic NBA team to provide digital signage in the church’s bookstore. Three of the venues have robotic camera systems, including the wedding chapel, which was custom built to switch wedding ceremonies live, then quickly render a DVD for viewing during the reception.

The church looked for ways to cut costs in the long term, in addition to selecting cost-effective equipment. Faith Assembly purchased LED light fixtures for use on the main floor of their sanctuary, which cut their electrical use down by 75 percent. With this lighting, the church continually saves money on both electricity and air conditioning, since the lighting fixtures use only a fraction of the heat as typical lighting solutions.

“So much time and effort was put into this project and in working with Encore, we were able to put together a very open infrastructure with a lot of flexibility,” said Hawks. “We’re extremely pleased with the level of sophistication we’ve been able to achieve technically and within our budget. Using FOR-A’s video switcher has greatly contributed to our success, and Faith Assembly is confident that our efficient video production setup will help us thrive as an organization.”

Meridian Audio Introduces DSP640 at CES, Part of The Digital Active In-wall Loudspeaker Range

Meridian Audio introduces the next model in the new range of Digital Active In-wall Loudspeaker models including the DSP520 and DSW500 subwoofer. The DSP640 will be part of Meridian’s demonstration during CES 2013 at the Venetian, suite 30-235.

Delivering true Meridian DSP loudspeaker performance, the in-wall range has been designed to expand and complement the existing range of Meridian DSP loudspeakers. The Meridian DSP in-walls offer the ability to create a discreet installation or mix and match them with Meridian’s freestanding loudspeakers, such as the newly updated DSP7200, to create a superior Digital Theatre system.

The DSP in-wall loudspeakers are also designed to make it simple and convenient to add a zone to existing Meridian Digital Media Systems. Meridian’s Media Source 200 simply mounts on the back of these in-wall loudspeakers and can be operated from any Digital Media System controller such as the Core Control App for iPad.

As with every Meridian loudspeaker design, special attention has been paid to ensure the highest quality audio performance. The DSP640 and DSP520 are built with the drivers mounted into the front extrusion of the enclosure itself, while a separate upper case holds the electronics, consisting of DSP, digital audio converters and an individual amplifier per driver.

The new in-wall loudspeakers can be mounted horizontally (the wide-range driver is centrally mounted making them ideal for use as a horizontal centre) or vertically, in a wall or ceiling. Both models include a paintable magnetic grille, and elements including frame, rough-in box, etc include room for adjustment enabling the entire assembly to be fitted with precision into almost any type of wall and blend seamlessly with any décor.

DSP520 available January 2013, MSRP: $5,000 each
DSP640 available February 2013, MSRP: $7,500 each

Key Points for Editors

• DSP-based design delivers superior performance to conventional designs—equivalent to an enclosure of eight times the physical volume
• Ultra-narrow (200mm) design delivers full DSP loudspeaker performance from an in-wall package.
• Uses Meridian’s highly acclaimed Wide Range Driver technology that eliminates the need for a crossover in the critical midrange producing lifelike vocals.
• Back-box and frame system allow precise positioning and adjustment and includes Meridian’s innovative SpeakerLink technology for simple integration with the rest of the system.
• Unique DSP setting to compensate for mounting behind fabric or projection screens in Theatre applications.
• When combined with the Media Source 200, the In-wall loudspeakers provide an elegant Digital Media System zone.

SYMETRIX JUPTER AND ARC-WEB DELIVER SMARTPHONE CONTROL TO CHANGE A RESTAURANT INTO A BAR!

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH: Zest Kitchen and Bar would be near the top of the heap in both the “hip” and “forward-thinking” categories were it located in, say, New York City. But on the high desert of Salt Lake City, Zest’s commitment to local organic produce and liquor, its haut vegetarian menu, and its nightly changeover from conscientious eatery to thumping dance club put it in a category all its own. When veteran restaurateur Casey Staker conceived of Zest, he knew it had to have a great sound system – and he also knew that he had to have ultimate control over the performance and volume of that sound system. Local A/V integration firm Performance Audio obliged, using a Symetrix Jupiter 8 processor to dial in Zest’s fidelity and a Symetrix ARC-WEB to provide custom control of all relevant parameters directly from Staker’s smartphone.

“Staker has been in the restaurant and bar business for a long time,” said Jake Peery, system design & installation expert with Performance Audio and the individual responsible for Zest’s custom sound system. “More than once, he’s seen a good time ruined by overzealous DJs, who effectively chase patrons out the door with sheer volume. Since he plans on a regular rotation of local DJs along with not-infrequent shows by national DJs on tour, he wanted some personal insurance that no such thing would happen at Zest. I recognized that the Symetrix ARC-WEB was the answer. It would give him all the control he wanted on his smartphone.”

The Symetrix Jupiter 8 processor fills most of its eight inputs from an iPod dock, a microphone, a computer and a balanced stereo pair located at a modest FOH position. Repurposed QSC RMX-series loudspeakers and JBL Control 25s join a collection of new JBL AM7212s, AC28s, and ASB6118s to provide the system with serious output. A repurposed Crown CTS4200 powers the loudspeakers in less critical locations, while new Ashly KLR 4000 and KLR 5000 amplifiers power the most prominent loudspeakers and subwoofers. “The Ashly KLR series gives me the best bang for the buck,” said Peery. “Nothing else touches them on price, and the output is loud and clean.”

Of course, Staker wouldn’t be at Zest all the time, and his staff would need to control the system in his absence, so Peery installed a Symetrix ARC-2e wall panel remote in the manager’s office. The ARC-2e allows the staff to recall presets for different modes of operation. However, Staker’s ARC-WEB control digs deeper and allows him alone to override zone volumes. “In addition to being a great sounding and inexpensive device, the Symetrix Jupiter’s support of ARC-WEB was a deciding factor in this installation,” said Peery. “ARC-WEB is easy to set-up and use, and is compatible with many popular web browsers, operating systems and devices, including iPhone/iPad and Android. Casey’s on an Android device right now, but that might change. If and when it does, ARC-WEB will still work just the same.”

“Controlling the system from my phone is very cool,” admitted Staker. “Every DJ hears something different. With the system Jake designed, I can control the volume from anywhere in the restaurant, and I can make individual adjustments to the dining room, the bar, or the dance floor. I can pin it to what I want, not what the DJ wants.”
