FUJIFILM Optical Devices Delivers First Orders of PL Cabrio 19-90 Lens

SIM Digital and AbelCine Take Delivery, Rent Lenses Immediately

Wayne, N.J.– FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division announces the first deliveries of its PL 19-90 Cabrio ZK4.7×19 lens to video rental companies SIM Digital and AbelCine. The Cabrio lens was first introduced at NAB 2012 and is part of the company’s PREMIER PL Mount Zoom family. The lightweight and compact ZK4.7×19 features a first for cine-style lenses – an exclusive detachable servo drive unit that makes it suitable for use as a standard Cine PL lens or as an ENG-Style lens.

Toronto-based SIM Digital ordered 14 Cabrio lenses post-NAB, and received their first shipment in August. A long time FUJINON lens user, SIM Digital has been acquiring lenses from the company for 30 years and owns hundreds of them.

“One of the features we love about the Cabrio 19-90 lens is the flexibility it offers,” said Rob Sim, Founder & President of SIM Digital. “The focal length of the lens and the ability to use it in an ENG scenario is ideal for shooting episodic television, feature films, and other multiple camera environments. It offers great speed for a zoom lens. We’ve received eight Cabrio lenses so far, which were immediately rented and have been continually used without any issues. There’s been a lot of interest in the lenses, and we anticipate them to be utilized for many upcoming projects.”

SIM Digital has rented its Cabrio lenses for use in productions such as Rookie Blue, a Canadian police drama television series, and new episodic television show, Beauty and the Beast.

“In our long-standing relationship with FUJIFILM Optical Devices, we’ve found their products to be high-quality and extremely reliable. Depending on FUJINON lenses’ useful features, such as dustproof and anti-fogging technology, saves us time and money, since it prevents us from needing to constantly rebuild or service the lenses,” explained Sim.

New York-based equipment reseller and rental company AbelCine was also one of the first to place an order for the FUJINON Cabrio lenses immediately following their introduction earlier this year. The company purchased a large number of lenses and has received delivery of dozens of them thus far.

“We’ve seen great interest in the FUJINON PL 19-90 Cabrio lens, especially among a range of midsized rental houses, smaller production companies and directors of photography,” said Pete Abel, President and CEO of AbelCine.

AbelCine customers of the new FUJINON Cabrio lens include DP Jonathan Furmanski, whose resume includes a long list of documentaries, television series, feature films, commercials, and music videos; production company Zero Point Zero, whose current projects include Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, set to air next spring on CNN, and Meat Men on Food Network; and full service rental house Chater Camera, located in Northern California.

The FUJINON PL 19-90 lens covers 31.5mm sensor size on a digital cinema style camera, ensuring the image captured will cover large sensors for optimal, full-frame resolutions. The lens features flange focal distance adjustment, macro function, and is Lens Data System and /i metadata compatible. With a 19-90mm focal range and weight of only 2.7kg including servo motors, the Cabrio lens has the longest focal range available in a light weight zoom.

The Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM introduced the PL 85-300 Cabrio lens (model ZK3.5×85) last November, which Sim Digital has ordered eight of. The PL 85-300 offers a focal length of 85-220mm at T2.9 and 300mm at T4.0, with 200-degree focus rotation. Designed using the latest optical simulation technology, the PL 85-300 Cabrio not only offers exceptional optical performance in the center of the image but in the corners of the frame as well. Like the highly acclaimed PL 19-90 Cabrio, the PL 85-300 is equipped with the same indispensable features including flange focal distance adjustment, a MOD of 1.2m, a macro function for objects as close as 97cm (38-inches), and covers a 31.5mm diagonal sensor size.

Testronic Announces Expansion of File-Based QC Lab

State-of-the-Art Lab Adds UltraViolet Interoperability Testing, Secure Management of Internet Access, and Downstream Deliverables

(Burbank, CA) Testronic Labs, the global leader in quality assurance services for film and television, games, consumer electronics, enterprise, and publishing, has completed a significant expansion to its award-winning File-Based QC Lab (the File-Based Lab), located in the company’s First Street facility in Burbank, California. Building upon the existing secure infrastructure, the File-Based Lab has been upgraded to provide UltraViolet(tm) Interoperability Testing capabilities and related test automation services, including extended services and environments to support the evolving digital ecosystem from mastering to consumer distribution.

UltraViolet is the cloud-based home entertainment industry standard that allows consumers to download and stream movies and TV shows for viewing on a wide range of devices. The expansion of Testronic’s File-Based Lab adds UltraViolet Interoperability Testing services, and features independent test stations supporting both hardware and software-based Common File Format (CFF) Players connected to a secure NAS, allowing client files to be quickly tested against a wide-range of CFF Players. UltraViolet Content Providers, Retailers, Download Service Providers (DSPs), and CFF Player manufacturer licensees can bring and transmit CFF content files for testing against available players, and have their players tested against CFF reference files and representative UltraViolet content. Testronic engineers are available to assist in consultation, setup, configuration, and to perform interoperability testing, including end-to-end consumer purchase, download, and playback scenarios.

In addition to supporting UltraViolet testing, the updated File-Based Lab can securely receive and test digital content and all downstream deliverables for Over-the-Top (OTT) services such as iTunes, Netflix and Hulu. To better support website, web portal and content rights redemption testing, Testronic has further expanded its online test lab environment, adding 12 additional test stations and upgrading the Master QC testing suites with greater functionality and additional technologies.

Albert Koval, Testronic’s Vice President of UltraViolet Services and Software Testing US, said, “Adding UltraViolet interoperability testing capabilities for content and CFF playback devices was a natural extension of the work that began when Phase I of the File-Based Lab was unveiled in mid-2011. The Lab has been designed from the ground up to serve the needs of studios, content providers and player manufacturers as the industry transitions to file-based workflows. Our customers are continually engaged in a never-ending cycle of change regarding the creation, management and delivery of content, and we feel that our ability to look ahead of the horizon and help them be prepared is crucial. Testronic is making this investment to stay ahead in critical areas like UltraViolet that relate to OTT and digital distribution, including the testing of desktop and mobile apps, websites, web portals and plug-in services, all of which are a growing focus for our clients.”

Testronic developed the File-Based Lab after careful research clearly showed a need to support clients in performing end-to-end, secure, testing services in the digital space. 1 Gigabit and 10 Gigabit download capabilities ensure fast, secure ingest of large media files; and future growth is secured, with the ability to add additional testing stations and capacity as needed. In Phase I, the company invested heavily in ground-breaking technology, including an innovative, advanced playback system for high-resolution, multi-format A/V, which reduced the time and equipment required to test the many master and distribution content file formats that exist across the entertainment ecosystem. The Phase II expansion is a continuation of thoughtful and advanced creativity by the Testronic team to develop file-based testing services to support clients now and in the future.

Waves MaxxAudio® Sound-Enhancement Technology Is Now Available for Tensilica HiFi Audio DSP Cores at CES

— The cooperation of Tensilica and Waves adds availability of professional-quality audio enhancement technologies to popular DSP cores —

INTERNATIONAL CES, Las Vegas, NV, January 7, 2013 — The Consumer Electronics Division of Waves (LVH 1430), the industry leader in professional audio digital signal processing and recipient of a Technical GRAMMY® award, and Tensilica (LVCC, South Hall 2 – MP25060), the leader in dataplane processor IP core licensing, have launched a new cooperative effort. Today they announced that Waves’ MaxxAudio® sound-enhancement technology is now available for Tensilica’s HiFi audio DSP cores. Tensilica’s HiFi DSP cores are an industry-leading audio platform used in a broad range of consumer electronics products, including portable music players, smartphones, computers, tablets, digital TV and other devices.

MaxxAudio incorporates a host of proprietary signal-processing technologies to deliver enhanced, dynamic and immersive sound from the small speakers typically found in many consumer electronics products, with better definition, deeper bass and a more enveloping sound field.

Tomar Elbaz, Executive Vice President of Waves, stated: “Elevating Tensilica’s portfolio with MaxxAudio studio-quality sound enhancement suite further underscores our company’s commitment to providing the highest-quality audio solutions to consumers. Waves signal processing and audio technologies are used by top pros in the recording industry, and now this level of professional-quality sonic improvement will be available in a much wider range of products from top consumer electronics manufacturers.”

“We are delighted to be working with Waves to support mutual customers, who have requested MaxxAudio on our HiFi DSP,” stated Larry Przywara, Tensilica’s director of mobile multimedia. “As consumer products use smaller speakers, advanced sound-enhancement technology like this is essential to improve the user experience.”

MaxxAudio provides significantly improved audio quality, using technologies that are directly derived from the company’s professional studio processing heard on countless hit records, major motion pictures and popular video games. MaxxAudio incorporates a suite of proprietary audio enhancements including MaxxVolume™, MaxxLeveler, MaxxTreble™, MaxxDialog, MaxxStereo™, MaxxBass® and MaxxEQ™. MaxxAudio offers optimum sonic performance whether listening through speakers or headphones. Its processing works in real time for consistently satisfying high-quality sound.

MaxxVolume provides increased volume levels, improves clarity and increases the intelligibility of softer sounds at quiet volumes.
MaxxLeveler evens out volume differences with two user-selectable listening modes.
MaxxTreble high-frequency enhancement brings out sonic nuances with detail and clarity.
MaxxDialog lets listeners adjust dialog levels in movies and games, without affecting the rest of the audio mix.
MaxxStereo creates a bigger stereo “sweet spot” from a device’s built-in speakers.
MaxxBass virtual subwoofer technology uses psychoacoustic processing to deliver more natural-sounding bass.
MaxxEQ lets listeners shape the sound to their preferences using full frequency spectrum equalization.

Bose® RoomMatch® Sound System Provides Exceptional Directional Control for Heartland Ministries’ New Sanctuary

Sharpsville, Indiana church’s new building had acoustical challenges, and the Bose system helped
solve those problems

Framingham, Massachusetts, January 7, 2013 – When Heartland Ministries opened its new sanctuary earlier this year, in Sharpsville, Indiana, both staff and congregants were thrilled with how the church’s new facility looked. However, its clean lines rely on hard, reflective wall surfaces and a high roof with metal decking – ingredients that make spoken-word intelligibility difficult to achieve because of acoustical reverberation. But rather than compromise aesthetics, Heartland Ministries instead turned to Phil Mitchell, President of the Mitchell Design Group, who spec’ed a system consisting of RoomMatch® array module loudspeakers from Bose® Professional Systems Division. Thanks to the high degree of directional control offered by RoomMatch, the sound at Heartland Ministries’ new sanctuary is so clean and articulate that, in the words of the church’s founding pastor, Dr. William Salsbery, “We now have one of the best sound systems in Indiana. Not merely the best sound system in a church in Indiana – but one of the best in any building in the entire state!” That’s the kind of plaudits that the sound system elicits from users in the HOW market, which has been rapidly embracing RoomMatch loudspeakers for their unmatched capabilities.

The system at Heartland Ministries consists of two RoomMatch RM9010, two RM7010 and two RM12020 array modules, along with a pair of RMS215 subwoofers, hung in two arrays on either side of the room. These are powered by three PowerMatch® PM8500 configurable professional power amplifiers and controlled by a ControlSpace® ESP-88 engineered sound processor using a ControlSpace CC-64 remote LCD controller. The Mitchell Design Group of Carmel, Indiana, installed the system.

Phil Mitchell, also a member of the Heartland Ministries congregation, had explored options from several manufacturers based on his initial designs for the sanctuary’s sound system, but he could not find the right fit that would provide the high degree of directional control he needed to keep the sound energy off of the highly reflective surfaces inside the church. “The church wanted a certain kind of look, and conventional line array systems simply can’t offer the level of pattern directionality that I needed to make this work,” he says. Mitchell first encountered the Bose RoomMatch system while attending the InfoComm Show in Orlando in June 2011, and he immediately saw that the unique pattern-control properties would keep the sound focused and away from reflective surfaces, assuring a high degree of intelligibility while still offering the full-range reproduction needed to keep the system musical. “With the other line array systems we looked at, it was their way or no way,” he says of the limited pattern focusing provided by other line arrays. “The RoomMatch loudspeakers were designed to let me choose from different coverage patterns and find the ones that perfectly fit this room’s shape and size.” Mitchell was also happy with the loudspeaker array’s rigging system, which he describes as intuitive and well constructed. “The RoomMatch system gave us everything we needed, from designing the pattern coverage to hanging the system itself,” says Mitchell. “The technology gives you literally all you need to create a system specifically tailored to your environment.”
