Earthworks Launching 500 Series Preamp at NAMM

Milford, NH, January 21, 2013 –Earthworks will introduce its first 500 Series module, the 521 ZDT at the 2013 NAMM show this week in Anaheim, CA (Booth 6882).

Based on the ZDT Preamp technology designed by David Blackmer, the 521 ZDT brings the exacting standards of the Zero Distortion Technology preamplifiers to the convenient 500 series format, providing a “wire with gain” option to the 500 series rack.

The solid state ZDT 521 features switchable phantom power, polarity invert, and peak amplitude clip detection, just as in the original 1021 single channel ZDT Preamp. The transformerless output stage of 521 ZDT will easily drive long cable runs without loss of quality, making it ideal for remote recordings. Transparent gain is switchable from 5dB to 60dB in 5dB steps.

The Earthworks mic amp topology provides outstanding common mode rejection, excellent overload margin and an incredibly low noise floor, combined with the ultra wide bandwidth of the ZDT Preamps (1Hz to 200kHz +0.5dB) and distortion of less than 1 part per million (0.0001%). This exceptional level of performance is maintained over an extensive range of impedances applied to the input, making the 521 ZDT suitable for practically any microphone – ribbon, dynamic or condenser.
The 521 ZDT is expected to ship Spring 2013.

HARMAN Professional Provides Total Audio Solution for World of Beer Franchises

NORTHRIDGE, California — In a unique and compelling installation, World of Beer, Inc., a national franchise that offers craft beers and live music in a casual setting, decided to go all out in supporting its live entertainment by equipping its Arlington, Virginia location and corporate headquarters with all-HARMAN audio systems that include JBL, Crown, BSS Audio, Soundcraft and AKG products. Orlando, Florida-based American Audio Visual (AAV) performed the installation.

The system had to be high-performance yet cost-effective. It was also critical that it would be easy to use by the tavern’s staff without having to bring in an outside audio engineer every time they had live music. Finally, it also needed to be able to easily transition from background music to live music, sometimes more than once a day. The system, once accepted, would be adopted as the standard sound reinforcement system for all World of Beer franchises moving forward.

“We worked closely with our rep Jason Bethune of Dobbs Stanford to propose an all-HARMAN system,” explained Sean Reish, Director, Capital Projects for AAV. “World of Beer had been working with different companies and vendors previously, and a big part of winning the bid was that HARMAN was the only company that offered everything from microphones to loudspeakers in a system that met their requirements and was also flexible enough to adapt to the needs of individual locations.”

“For the Arlington location we went with two JBL PRX415M 2-way 15-inch speakers flown above the stage because they’re unobtrusive yet deliver plenty of volume, and their 90 x 50-degree coverage is ideal for this type of space,” Reish said. The system also includes a JBL PRX418S subwoofer and a pair of JBL JRX112M loudspeakers serve as stage monitors. Thirteen JBL Control 65 P/T pendant speakers cover the main tavern area and four Control 26CT ceiling speakers cover the VIP section, all on a 70-volt background music distributed audio system. Crown DSi 4000 and DSi 2000 amplifiers power the main speakers, subwoofer and stage monitors, with a Crown CTs 4200 for the distributed audio system.

The live sound console is a Soundcraft GB-2R 16 compact 16-channel analog board. “We chose the GB-2R 16 because it had the right combination of features at the right price point,” Reish added. “We didn’t want to go digital just yet, and the GB-2R 16 is perfect for the size of the venue, the performers that come in and the board is also easy to use for people who aren’t professional sound mixers.” House mics are AKG, including a WMS 470 wireless microphone system.

A BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-100 processor provides system control, in conjunction with HARMAN HiQnet London Architect™ software. “The BLU-100 is an open architecture device that lets us scale an audio system to meet the requirements of each particular location and the number of zones it has,” Reish pointed out. “It operates in conjunction with a standardized GUI interface we’ve created that will go in every franchise.”

AAV also has future plans to set up a system as a demonstration and training facility in World of Beer’s Tampa, Florida corporate headquarters and the system is standardized down to the touch panel interface. “Managers and employees will be able to come in, learn the system and be able to operate it in any franchise,” Reish said.

According to Reisch, HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ software is the key to setting these systems up consistently in every World of Beer location. “Working with HARMAN, we spent a lot of time getting the system just right, and now we not only have a template for future franchises, but also the ability to monitor and diagnose a system in any World of Beer location and make changes remotely,” Reisch said. “One night a performer in Arlington lost a microphone and were able to reset the EQ, gain structure and routing for a different mic from 2,000 miles away in a couple of minutes while live on the phone.”

“Having a high-quality audio system in each of our locations is central to the experience that our customers have at World of Beer. We are looking to expand aggressively in the next 18 months and having a partner like HARMAN that can provide us with an all-in-one solution at a highly competitive price made it very clear that they are the manufacturer that we want to be working with moving forward,” explained Dave Bearce, Music Program Director, World of Beer Franchising, Inc.

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets — supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon® and Mark Levinson®. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems. HARMAN has a workforce of about 13,900 people across the Americas, Europe and Asia, and reported net sales of $4.4 billion for year ended June 30, 2012.

Barix Supports Crestron Rava SIP Intercom and Phone Technology

Solution delivers first interface to enable peer-to-peer device communication between Rava-enabled touch screens and analog door stations

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, January 21, 2013 — IP audio and control specialist Barix is pleased to announce support of Crestron Rava™ SIP intercom and phone technology. The Barix SIP firmware will simplify integration of Rava-enabled touch screens with analog devices, such as intercom panels, to enable peer-to-peer communication between devices without a central server. This simplifies Voice over IP (VoIP) integration in residential and commercial deployments.

Crestron Rava touch screens leverage SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to permit voice intercom, telephone and paging (point-to-point and group) among other applications across the home, office or small business. The inclusion of Barix firmware uniquely establishes compatibility between Rava-enabled touch screens and analog door stations. This allows customers to continue to use existing analog installed devices when upgrading to Rava touch screens, providing seamless IP to analog integration.

Systems integrators, meanwhile, eliminate the time and labor associated with configuring servers to enable SIP compatibility between Rava touch screens and connected devices. Barix firmware allows these devices to discover each other on the network, becoming the first Crestron-approved solution to offer such seamless peer-to-peer device connectivity. The result is a reliable, SIP-compatible solution that effectively bridges analog and digital components within Rava environments.

“We’re thrilled to have Barix support our protocol because it bridges the gap between digital (SIP communication points) and analog door stations,” said Fred Bargetzi, Crestron VP of Technology. “We see many homes with independent door station/intercom systems separate from the home automation system or homes with integrated page-all intercom systems when discrete peer-to-peer operation is more desirable. With support of the Rava protocol, Barix now provides a retrofit solution that seamlessly communicates with the homeowner’s existing door station.”

The Barix solution can be deployed today by connecting a Barix Annuncicom IP two-way audio hardware device directly to a door station. Crestron is also working with companies such as eHolovision, which manufactures a series of intercom entry panels for door stations. Barix will soon add the same functionality to these and other third-party panels equipped with Barix IPAM Series modules. This enables peer-to-peer SIP and Rava compatibility without additional hardware.

Both options also provide digital inputs and outputs for control options, such as activating door strikes. The integration with Barix effectively turns a door station and a Crestron Home Control System into an integrated access control solution for the customer.

“Barix has previously worked with Crestron, developing an Annuncicom device version specifically for Crestron residential solutions. That solution offered an IP interface for point-to-point, full-duplex audio distribution and control between analog and digital devices,” said Johannes G. Rietschel, CEO and founder of Barix AG. “The new solution evolves the relationship, using Barix’s strong IP audio and control expertise to develop a unique solution that reduces infrastructure, simplifies installation and enhances communication across Rava environments.”

UDC Pro ECS-Raptor for Embedded Server Control Debuts from High Resolution Systems

High Resolution Systems has introduced UDC Pro ECS-Raptor, a UDC Pro Embedded Control Server designed for permanent AV installs. Raptor teams up with the company’s popular UDC software to offer a cost-effective, stable hardware/software solution for long-term installations in a wide range of environments. It will begin shipping in February.

A Linux-embedded server, Raptor significantly lowers costs to users over full-blown Windows servers while significantly lowering power usage. “Raptor comes with a free version of UDC Software so customers can build their control configuration with UDC software, load it onto Raptor and run it,” says Drew Taylor. “Most customers will likely pay for an upgrade to UDC Pro Software, which allows them to send all their commands from UDC Software on the Windows computer before loading onto Raptor for faster configuration and debugging the control system on the fly.”

Raptor comes with an Ethernet connection to the device network plus four RS232 serial ports and one USB port for control. It occupies 1RU in height and one-half of a rack in width and ships with an optional rack shelf for space-saving rack mounting. “Raptor is so compact that other equipment can fit on the rest of the shelf – interface boxes, DAs or even another Raptor for multiple room control,” Taylor explains.

Raptor supports the same user interfaces as UDC software: iPad touch control with the HRS Control Pro iOS app available in Apple’s App Store; the HRS Control Pro app for any Windows tablet; in-wall mount touchscreen and button solutions; Android tablets; and web servers. Any device with a browser can act as a controller.

High Resolution Systems is currently completing its first installation featuring Raptor. A Raptor will be dedicated to an executive briefing room with the need for extensive device control. A second Raptor will meet the needs of the rest of the facility. “Even with two Raptors, this is still a very cost-effective solution for the integrator taking up a single rack space while keeping power consumption to an absolute minimum,” Taylor notes.

High Resolution Systems will showcase Raptor at NAB 2013 and InfoComm13.
