AN API 48-CHANNEL 1608 WITH AUTOMATION INSTALLED AT 77 RECORDING

EVANSVILLE, INDIANA – JANUARY 2013: A 48-channel API 1608 analog console with 32-channels of automation has been installed at 77 Recording, making them owner of one of the largest 1608’s manufactured to date! In less than a decade, this studio has matured from an in-the-box basement rig to a world-class facility occupying 3,500 square-feet of acoustically-stunning real estate just two hours north of Nashville in lovely Evansville, Indiana. The already busy studio is getting busier as it draws talent from an ever-expanding radius, and by recently hiring Nashville recording, mixing, and mastering engineer Jimmy Dulin as its chief engineer. The perfection of 77 Recording’s live studios is complemented by an exquisite hybrid analog/digital signal path in the control room. A 24-track Sony MCI JH24 two-inch tape machine interlocks with Pro Tools HD via Endless Analog CLASP synchronization, and the whole rig is now piloted by the API 1608 console.

Owner and recording engineer Brett Mulzer’s guided 77 Recording from its project-studio roots to the big league studio it is today. “When I first started out, I was recording and mixing with little more than a Digi 002 and a computer,” he said. “After adding some gear to the front end, I ventured outside the box with a summing mixer. I liked the results so well that I purchased a mid-sized analog desk, but ultimately its capabilities were limited and its automation was frustrating and of poor resolution.”

Mulzer explored his alternatives, and the API 1608 jumped out as an obvious candidate. “I wanted a board that was geared toward rock, and API is legendary in that regard,” he said. “API is especially well known for its drum sound, and drums are our forte at 77 Recording. The live room is huge and warm, and I really wanted to play to that strength. The API 1608 delivers on everything I had hoped for: a classic aggressive, punchy sound paired with a reliable, modern signal path and excellent automation.” Mulzer noted that the 1608’s automation is of very high resolution and is robust and reliable to implement together with Pro Tools and CLASP.

Mulzer expanded his stock 16-channel API 1608 with two 16-channel expanders because he wants to be able to mix down without having to make submixes in Pro Tools. “I like having a fader for everything I record,” he said. In addition, he wanted a large count of high-quality preamps in order to accommodate the orchestras, choirs, and other large ensembles that frequent 77 Recording’s tremendous live room. “Zero restrictions” served as his guiding principle.

“Apart from the obvious improvement in sound quality and the ease of integrating outboard gear, mixing outside the box has a more subtle, but equally important benefit,” Mulzer observed. “I find that when I’m mixing within the Pro Tools environment, I start to let the visuals guide my decisions. I start mixing with my eyes rather than my ears. In contrast, when I mix outside the box, my ears guide all my decisions, as they should.”

To complement the API 1608, 77 Recording has a wealth of outboard gear, including several 500-series modules – API 525 compressors, API 550a three-band EQs, and API 550b four-band EQs – situated within the console’s 500-series expansion bay.

Acoustical design for the studio is credited to Haverstick Designs.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Provides Sound and Lighting Training at Winter NAMM 2013

ANAHEIM, California — At Winter NAMM 2013, HARMAN’s Soundcraft will host a seminar at the H.O.T. (Hands-On Training) Zone titled, “Lighting Control for Sound Guys.” The session will introduce attendees to the DMX protocol and will provide training using Soundcraft’s Si Performer—the first console to integrate sound and lighting control in one board.

The H.O.T. (Hands-On Training) Zone provides live educational sessions and innovative ideas for professionals in the pro audio, entertainment technologies, music business operations, recording, live sound, DJ, house of worship, commercial systems contractors/integrators, and stage and lighting industries.

“The Si Performer is revolutionary in its integration of sound and lighting disciplines and while it solves a litany of challenges, it also raises the issue that many sound engineers do not know how to operate a lighting console, nor are all lighting engineers familiar with the ins and outs of running a sound board,” said Richard Ayres, Product Manager for Soundcraft, who will be running the seminar. “Our session at the H.O.T. Zone will aim to provide engineers with a comprehensive understanding of both disciplines.”

Thanks to integrated DMX functionality, the Soundcraft Si Performer range adds lighting control options to an already impressive and powerful audio feature set. The Si Performer consoles have an input capacity of 80 inputs to mix and the Si Performer 2 features 24 mic and eight line inputs, while the Si Performer 3 boasts 32 mic and eight line inputs, plus four FX return channels. The unique integration of a DMX512 port offers core lighting control. The first release of software provides four scene masters (A-D) with associated slave channels on the ALT fader layers, individual colour intensities or parameters are set on the slave faders with an overall master level fader, which itself may be assigned to any of the main fader layers for simultaneous access to audio and lighting levels.

“Lighting Control for Sound Guys” will be held on Sunday, January 27 at 1:30 PM, in Room 203 A-B at the Anaheim Convention Center. For more information, please visit http://www.namm.org/thenammshow/2013/hot-zone/lighting-control-sound-guys

Christie Conquers the Elements with Introduction of New WeatherAll Series of Weatherproof LCD Flat Panels

The new Christie® WeatherAll Series of LCD outdoor flat panels makes its global debut at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) show in Amsterdam, Netherlands on January 29, setting the standard for outdoor LED-backlit LCD technology. Rugged and versatile, the first of the WeatherAll Series is the 55-inch Christie FHD551-W, a professional grade full HD (1920 x 1080 resolution) solution designed to perform in a wide range of applications including outdoor sporting venues, outdoor live events, architectural applications, entertainment parks, public displays, the hospitality and resort industry, transportation services, and numerous other outdoor environments not typically applicable with standard LCD panels.

Christie FHD551-W WeatherAll Flat Panel

“Christie is at the forefront in offering what customers need and the WeatherAll Series is designed to be the clear choice in an outdoor weatherproof display solution,” said Frank Anzures, senior product manager, Christie. “First in our WeatherAll Series, the Christie FHD551-W is easy to maintain while providing robustness and the vivid picture quality needed when presenting your message outdoors.”

The Christie FHD551-W features optically bonded glass for increased protection against harsh impacts and scratches in public display environments while enhancing viewability in outdoor venues by reducing reflection. It is designed to provide high contrast ratio, rich vibrant colors, and superior brightness to overcome high ambient light — making it perfect for outdoor use.

The ability to use the Christie FHD551-W in landscape or portrait mode is ideal for rental staging applications, resorts, hotels and restaurants, to provide impactful content in public areas, while being rugged and durable to withstand rain, sleet, snow, and human interaction. The Christie FHD551-W’s integrated speakers and sleek design makes this a visually appealing solution compared to traditional LCD products that would require enclosures when used in outdoor environments.

“The typical flat panel displays are not designed for outdoor use and the risk of damage when exposed to the elements is very high. However, the high definition Christie FHD551-W is designed to be IP56 rated / NEMA4 and has a DACS filtration system to protect it and allow for it to be used in harsh weather conditions and withstand the abuse of public display areas,” said Anzures. “With the addition of optically bonded glass it increases sunlight readability by up to 400 percent when compared with standard flat panels and increases scratch and impact resistance by up to 300 percent.”

For superior dependability in the most challenging outdoor environments, the DACS cooling & filtration system provides a thermostatically-controlled active system that protects sensitive electronics from temperature extremes, moisture, and dust. The advanced easy-clean solution eliminates the need for core filter replacement. The FHD551-W features a weather rating of IP56/NEMA4, providing protection against solid foreign objects such as falling dirt or windblown dust in addition to rain, sleet, snow, ice and splashing or hosed water.

“The Christie FHD551-W can easily manage temperatures ranging from a scorching 45 degrees Celsius (114 degrees Fahrenheit) all the way down to a bone chilling minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit), as well as rain, snow, dust and high humidity, without those factors affecting performance. This new outdoor flat panel also boasts integrated weatherproof speakers to provide a full solution for outdoor use,” added Anzures.

Benefits of Christie FHD551-W with Optical Bonding
- Improves sunlight readability up to 400 percent.
- Increases impact and scratch resistance up to 300 percent.
- Eliminates parallax: the apparent displacement or the difference in apparent direction of an object as seen from two different points not on a straight line with the object.
- Prevents condensation on LCD Panel.
- Significantly improves durability against vibration, extreme temperatures, altitudes, water and dust.
- Vastly improves contrast and color saturation readability.

The Christie FHD551-W is now shipping with a two-year parts and labor warranty, backed by Christie’s renowned customer service and support.

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Adds White Versions of PRX415M and PRX412M Passive Loudspeakers

The JBL PRX415M-WH (left) and PRX412M-WH (right) offer the same performance and capabilities as the PRX412M and PRX415M, in a sleek white finish.

ANAHEIM, California – At Winter NAMM 2013, HARMAN’s JBL Professional is introducing white versions of its popular PRX415M and PRX412M passive portable loudspeakers. The new 15-inch PRX415M-WH and 12-inch PRX412M-WH offers the same performance and capabilities as the PRX412M and PRX415M, in a sleek white finish that offers systems designers with another loudspeaker option to discreetly fit into various environments that require white loudspeaker systems.

“The PRX400 Series has been a tremendous success for end-users and sound contractors who require exceptional sound and rugged reliability in a passive loudspeaker format,” said Andy Flint, Senior Manager, Portable PA Marketing, Loudspeaker Group. “In addition to our commitment to providing market-leading audio performance, the PRX415M-WH and PRX412M-WH demonstrate our commitment to providing a variety of aesthetic options for audio applications.”

The PRX415M-WH and PRX412M-WH can be used as either floor monitors or for overhead suspension in a permanent installation application where white enclosures are desirable. As with all PRX400 Series loudspeakers, they are designed to work hand in hand with Crown Audio’s powerful and innovative XTi2 Series amplifiers. Crown XTi2 amplifiers incorporate enhanced pre-set performance tunings for PRX400 Series loudspeakers, including crossover points for a sat/subwoofer setup, and optimized parametric filter that bring out the full potential of PRX400 Series loudspeakers. JBL PRX400 tunings are also available in the dbx DriveRack® PA+ signal processor/complete loudspeaker management system.

The PRX415M-WH and PRX412M-WH utilize extremely high-quality, tour-tested drivers and components to deliver clear, detailed and dynamic sound for bands, DJs, nightclubs, schools, houses of worship or other professional touring and installed sound applications. They feature Neutrik® SpeakON combination connectors and are built from lightweight, yet extremely tough 18mm birch/poplar multi-laminate hardwood covered in JBL’s resilient DuraFlex™ covering. They also feature rugged 16 gauge steel grilles with an acoustically transparent white cloth backing.

The PRX415M-WH and PRX412M-WH incorporate twelve M-10 suspension points and hardened steel eyebolts for safe hanging in light-duty installations. In common with all JBL Professional products, the PRX415M-WH and PRX412M-WH loudspeakers have survived JBL’s 100-hour power test, in which they are submitted to 100 hours of continuous, high-level input. The speakers also go through a barrage of unforgiving environmental and strength tests including harsh temperatures and humidity, ensuring they will perform perfectly anywhere. They also incorporate JBL’s Sonic Guard speaker protection circuit that automatically attenuates the signal going into the high-frequency section of the speaker if too much input signal is detected, and restores normal operation when the overload condition passes.

HARMAN’s JBL Professional EON Portable Powered Loudspeakers are Inducted Into the TEC Foundation’s TECnology Hall of Fame

ANAHEIM, California – HARMAN’s JBL Professional today announced that its EON Series of portable powered loudspeakers has been inducted into the TEC Foundation’s TECnology Hall of Fame. The TEC Foundation for Excellence in Audio established the TECnology Hall of Fame in 2004 to recognize audio products and innovations that have made a significant contribution to the advancement of audio technology. Inductees are chosen by a panel of more than 50 recognized audio experts.

When the JBL EON series was introduced in 1995 it single-handedly started the portable powered speaker revolution. The first two EON15P and EON10P models answered the need for powerful, easy-to-use, lightweight and durable portable PA and musical instrument speakers that combined the convenience of built-in amplification with outstanding sound quality.

The EON Series introduced a host of technical and design innovations including JBL’s patented Differential Drive® transducers, which employ a pair of in-line voice coils in separate magnetic gaps instead of the usual single voice coil-gap combination to enable maximum performance with minimum weight and more effective use of available enclosure space. The use of JBL’s Thermomaster® Total Thermal Management System provided efficient cooling without the need for fans or bulky heatsinks.

The EON Series was an instant hit, embraced by consumers and fueling the subsequent growth of the powered molded-enclosure integrated system segment of the MI market. Over time, the EON series evolved and expanded. The second-generation G2 models offered upgraded drivers, higher power and expanded input functionality. Today, the JBL EON Series continues its tradition of excellence with the 2-way, 15-inch EON515XT.

“We are extremely proud that our EON series has been chosen for induction into the TECnology Hall of Fame,” said Andy Flint, Senior Manager, Portable PA Marketing, JBL Professional. “EON has become the industry standard for portable powered speakers and we are gratified that the TEC judging panel has recognized the EON Series with one of pro audio’s most prestigious honors.”

Jeff Iftekaruddin Plays Music For Kids (and Adults Too) Using HARMAN’s JBL Professional EON515XT Portable PA Loudspeakers

Singer/songwriter Jeff Iftekaruddin has enjoyed success touring throughout California with HARMAN’s JBL EON515XT portable PA loudspeaker.

ANAHEIM, California – Jeff Iftekaruddin is a guitarist, singer and songwriter who has been influenced by many styles of music, from the works of John Lennon that his mother loved to the music of his father’s native India. Recently, Iftekaruddin has enjoyed success touring throughout California with HARMAN’s JBL Professional EON515XT portable PA loudspeaker providing world-class audio quality in a lightweight and compact form factor.

From the day he first picked up a guitar, Iftekaruddin has been interested in combining various genres of music to create his own style, including songs recorded in both English and Spanish. His eclectic approach to songwriting can be heard in his most recent adult contemporary release, Songs About Women.

In the past two years, two unforeseen events have had a major influence on Iftekaruddin’s musical outlook. “Up until 2011 I was only making music for ‘grown ups,’” Iftekaruddin noted. “Then a chance encounter with a very special young girl and her family added a whole new perspective to my musical career.”

Iftekaruddin was playing his guitar near an auto shop while waiting for an oil change when a young boy and girl came over to listen. The girl began to softly sing along and Iftekaruddin did an improvised duet with the girl for about 15 minutes.

He then realized the girl’s parents had come over—and were politely waiting for him to finish. “The girl’s mother explained that her daughter was autistic and that they didn’t want to interrupt a song that was so calming for their child,” Iftekaruddin said. “She told me that her daughter had been feeling extremely anxious and that singing the song with me was the first time she had been calm all day.”

Iftekaruddin went home that night and reflected on how connected this little girl had been to his music. “I decided to write the girl her very own album,” he said I” wanted to fill it with music that any child—and their parents—would enjoy, no matter what their challenges were in life.” The result is Iftekaruddin’s new album, Songs About Turtles, Wolves and Stan the Man: Music for Kids Who Get It!

Another unplanned occurrence made Iftekaruddin realize the importance of good sound in live performance. “At the last minute I was asked to do a charity event in Santa Monica and had to use whatever PA they had. It was a JBL EON system,” he said. “I was performing in a massive yoga studio with beautiful bamboo floors and as soon as I plugged in and started playing I was mesmerized. I stopped worrying about my performance and just got lost in the sound. To hear my voice and guitar ringing out of the EON monitors with such clarity was just amazing – a definite rock star moment!”

Iftekaruddin soon purchased a JBL EON15XT powered loudspeaker. “Now I know I’m going to have great sound wherever I go,” he said. “I primarily play a Godin A6 guitar live and the EON515XT allows me to play direct—no EQ pedal, no ultra-funky acoustic wave modulator—just direct. I can hear every single nuance of my axe through the EON515XT.”

Iftekaruddin takes the EON515XT with him at all times. “I also have a 12-Volt/35-Watt battery plus a converter that I use to give me mobile power,” he said. “A lot of times after a show I will drive to a bank parking lot or the local Costco in Los Feliz and play for a few hours. To hear the EON515XT rebounding in such massive spaces is a holy experience.”

“My foray into the kids’ music arena has been a huge surprise in my life, and after doing shows many kids come up to me and want to know about my guitar and my equipment,” he added. “They are always interested in the EON515XT and its built-in mixer and I usually wind up having a ‘helper’ or two at a birthday party to help me set up. It’s so easy to use that they are always able to pick up very quickly how the EON515XT works.”

In addition, Iftekaruddin has found JBL Professional’s customer support to be first-rate. “It has been my experience that a lot of large companies lose touch with their customers, but JBL makes me feel like they listen to us folks who are out there in the field,” he said.

Iftekaruddin continues to bring his musical message of positivity to audiences at home and abroad. “On my new CD you’ll hear songs about working through challenges and making mistakes, a song that can help kids learn Spanish and a song about the beauty of being ‘different.’ I do my best to create a fun listening experience for the whole family.”

The RapcoHorizon Company RoadHog Cables are the Go-To Solution for Rock Bands Around the Globe

Foreigner and Theory of a Deadman to Sign Autographs at the RapcoHorizon Booth during the NAMM Show

ANAHEIM, CA, JANUARY 25, 2013The RapcoHorizon Company, a leading manufacturer of audio/video interfacing and cable equipment, continues to make waves among the rock community as its RoadHog cables are being used regularly by such high-profile bands as Foreigner and Theory of a Deadman. Both bands will be signing autographs during the NAMM Show at the RapcoHorizon booth (Hall C, Booth 4558). Foreigner will be greeting fans on Saturday, January 26 at 1 p.m. and Theory of a Deadman will be there on Saturday, January 26 at 3 p.m.

Having recently become a RapcoHorizon endorsed artist, the legendary British-American rock group Foreigner relies on the RoadHog cables, including the company’s new RoadHog SilverHog cables, for every performance. With RoadHog running audio for the guitars and speakers, and SilverHog on the drums and keyboards, the band continues to rock as loud as the first day it hit the music scene.

“I love the RapcoHorizon cables,” says Lorenzo Banda, monitor engineer for Foreigner. “The band’s Front of House Engineer, Brian Simon, and I can hear a clear difference in what the cables have brought to us since we made the upgrade to RapcoHorizon. All of the detail that RapcoHorizon puts into building a cable just blows me away. It is done exactly the way I would do it if I were designing the cables myself. RapcoHorizon spared no expense in making sure we were taken care of and we owe them a lot of credit for that.”

Fresh off a 64-day U.S. and Canadian tour, the Canadian rock group Theory of a Deadman also uses the RoadHog cables for every show. With a rig full of RoadHog and RoadHog SilverHog cables, and RapcoHorizon custom sub snakes, the company’s products run audio to and from almost every piece of the band’s set.

“We’ve tried a lot of different cables in the five years that I’ve been with Theory,” says Harry Mapes, drum and playback tech for Theory of a Deadman. “The RapcoHorizon cables deliver unsurpassed audio quality and are the most roadworthy cables we’ve come across. They are well built and hold up unlike anything we’ve ever dealt with. They are also super durable and deliver great audio no matter what rugged treatment we put them through. We can rely on them to just plug and play every time. The SilverHog, which is a much heavier gauge, once you solder your connection, it just holds no matter what. You’re going to be in good shape after that for a long time.”

RapcoHorizon RoadHog cables are designed with a highly rugged construction, ensuring they stand up to the harshest of touring conditions. Built with durable and thick, yet flexible, PVC outer jackets, the cables boast pure copper conductors and shields. These qualities make the cables road ready and tour tough without sacrificing sound quality. The construction of the jacket also guarantees that the cables not only lie flat on stage, but also roll up easily without any bends.

The latest addition to the RoadHog family, SilverHog is a series of high-end touring cables without the high-end price tag. Built with the original RoadHog jacket, SilverHog cables also have pure silver-plated copper conductors and shields. This upgrade provides a link between ultimate sound quality and extreme durability.

Founded by veteran English musicians Mick Jones and Ian McDonald and American vocalist Lou Gramm, Foreigner has released nine albums since 1976. The group, which boasts a total of 27 platinum album awards, continues to tour the world today. They were most recently seen headlining the Royal Caribbean Rock Legends Cruise, which hosted the likes of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Blue Oyster Cult, Paul Rodgers and Kansas.

Formed in 2001, rock band Theory of a Deadman hails from Vancouver, British Columbia. With four full-length LPs, the band quickly rose to popularity, garnering seven top-10 hits on the Mainstream Rock charts, including two number-one hits. The band’s third release, Scars and Souvenirs, went platinum.

The RapcoHorizon Company, located in Jackson, Missouri, is one of the world’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of audio, video, home theater, data and telecommunications cable in both bulk wire and assemblies. Used worldwide by concert touring sound companies, video and sound contractors, recording studios, system integrators, audiophiles and musicians, The RapcoHorizon Company’s products provide optimal flexibility and premium performance. The company’s state-of-the-art Custom Shop can modify existing products or build new devices to meet any need.
