WorldStage Adds New Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Consoles for Rentals and Staging

WorldStage, the new brand for Scharff Weisberg and Video Applications Inc., has chosen the Yamaha CL5 digital audio console and accompanying Rio (Remote/IO) stage rack as its new audio console and immediately made them available for audio system rentals and staging.

The Yamaha CL Series is a Dante network–based console featuring remote I/O for a faster, more responsive system solution. The footprint of all three CL consoles in the series is small, yet powerful and has been developed specifically for sound reinforcement applications such as performing arts venues, theaters, houses of worship, touring and remote broadcast.
The Yamaha CL5 mix capacity is 72 mono plus 8 stereo inputs (64 channels through Dante and 8 local), with 34 faders. It features 16 DCAs, channel encoders and supports 48kHz and 44.1kHz sampling rates. Up to eight external Rio boxes can be used for a total of 256 channels via the Dante digital network.
“We’re excited to be one of the first in the New York area to offer this system to our clients,” says WorldStage Director of audio services David Lynd. “The CL5 is well suited as a mixer for corporate as well as music events. With 64 remote inputs and 8 local on the desk it satisfies our clients’ requests for a console with higher channel counts. The CL5s give us more inputs in a small form factor; running fiber instead of large, heavy copper multi-core audio snakes is also a major plus.”

WorldStage president Josh Weisberg says the company chose the CL5 after an extensive search. “We like its compact, ergonomic design, easy-to-learn user interface and broad feature set. The CL5’s aggressively competitive price point allows WorldStage to use the console on a wide variety of projects that would have formerly utilized older analog boards,” Weisberg concludes.

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.

Calrec Achieves 100th Bluefin2 Installation With Sale to BBC Wales

HEBDEN BRIDGE, U.K. — Jan. 24, 2013 — Calrec, a leading supplier of audio consoles for on-air and live production, announced that it has surpassed 100 installations of its Bluefin2 high-density signal-processing (HDSP) technology with a sale to BBC Wales. BBC Wales installed a 40-fader Artemis Beam console with Hydra2 audio routing capability in a newly renovated studio at its Cardiff, Wales, facility. This is BBC Wales’ second Artemis console. It joins nine other Artemis desks and one Apollo desk — all equipped with Bluefin2 — in BBC operations throughout the United Kingdom.

“Calrec manufactures high-spec products in low numbers, and we only launched Bluefin2 technology at NAB in 2009, so to sell 100 consoles in three years is a significant achievement,” said Henry Goodman, head of sales and marketing at Calrec. “This milestone is an indication of the popularity and success of the current product range, and it’s especially fitting that the BBC plays a role in that success because it is our longest standing customer.”

Bluefin2 used in Apollo and Artemis consoles is Calrec’s second-generation FPGA technology, the technology that makes HDSP possible. Calrec has pioneered HDSP in broadcast-audio consoles by incorporating FPGA into its digital signal processing, which gives Calrec consoles immense power in a small space — more than any of its competitors. Bluefin2 offers more processing power than its highly successful predecessor, Bluefin, and provides a fully future-proof solution for multichannel discrete audio mixing.

The processing power of Bluefin2, combined with Calrec products’ reputation for reliability and intuitive control, has helped Calrec to achieve major market share in the U.K. and the U.S., where the company’s products are regularly quoted as the standard and are installed in 70 percent of OB trucks. The consoles are popular for sporting events and have proved successful for prime time live-to-air or live-to-tape programming.

Calrec is also seeing growth in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. The 100-installation milestone is particularly significant in those growing markets because it instills confidence in Calrec as a viable option for potential customers.

FOR-A Unveils New Feature for Frame Rate Converter that Caters to Winter Sports Production

Unit optimizes conversion in environments with fast motion and high contrast

Fort Lee, N.J. – FOR-A Corporation of America, a leading manufacturer of video and audio systems for the broadcast and professional video industries, announces a new update for its FRC-8000HS HD/SD <a href="http://for-a.com/products/frc8000/frc8000.html”>Frame Rate Converter to better accommodate the production of winter sports. With this software release, the FRC-8000 offers a unique level of in-depth user control, giving operators the ability to customize settings based on their specific needs. Users of the frame rate converter will now be able to select a ‘winter sports’ scene type, a special mode created by FOR-A to optimize the conversion process in environments with high-speed moving objects in highly saturated backgrounds that contain a lot of bright white, such as snow or ice.

“One of the strongest features of our FRC-8000 is the ability to fine tune our vector motion process,” explained Pedro Silvestre, Sales Director, FOR-A Corporation of America. “The FRC-8000 will produce world class results using the automatic conversion modes, but the new ‘scene type’ setting provides a new level of conversion, not available on any other motion vector converter.”

Offering simultaneous HD and SD output and an optional front touch panel for easy operation, the FRC-8000 is a popular frame rate conversion solution that has been utilized by many broadcasters to convert footage to the appropriate standard. Equipped with FOR-A’s proven motion compensation processing technology, the FRC-8000 supports a wide range of signals, including 1080i, 720p, NTSC and PAL. Up, down, and cross converters provide both frame rate and format conversion in a single unit. The solution’s new winter sports function will benefit broadcasters who are working on winter sporting events, such as speed skating, figure skating, skiing and snowboarding. While the FRC-8000 already offered a host of advanced functions to ensure excellent image quality, the new feature allowing users to customize the pre-set mode presents an even greater advantage. Broadcasters now have a wide range of control parameters, and can select from ‘normal,’ ‘sports,’ or ‘winter sports’ as their menu setting.

“We’re excited to offer this new feature,” said Silvestre, “The FRC-8000 was successfully used by a variety of broadcasters for the London Games last summer, and we anticipate that this new winter sports setting will prove popular for the 2014 Winter Games in Russia. More immediately, we look forward to seeing the new setting in action for upcoming winter sports productions.”

Customers deploying the FRC-8000 for sports production include: ESPN; the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC/Radio-Canada); Mexico City-based television network Televisa; Rogers Sportsnet, a Canadian live-event and high definition broadcaster; and Casablanca, a Brazilian provide of satellite communication services to customers such as Fox Sports Latin America.

The updated FRC-8000 software was released at the end of November 2012.
