Fisher Communications Deploys Monitor IQ from Digital Nirvana for Loudness and Compliance Monitoring

Stations Monitor Compliance Issues Independently, but Group Management can also Perform Remote Checks

Newark, CA – Fisher Communications, Inc. [NASDAQ:FSCI], a Seattle-based broadcast communications and media company, announced that Digital Nirvana’s Monitor IQ Essentials 3.0 is the station group’s chosen platform for regulatory compliance and loudness monitoring.

Monitor IQ provides Web-based, HD/SD channel monitoring, logging, compliance, and diagnostics/QC, as well as archiving of content recordings for up to 90 days. Monitor IQ Essentials is one of four versions designed to tailor Monitor IQ to the varying requirements of broadcasters.

“So far, we’ve installed Monitor IQ at three of our stations, including KOMO-TV4 in Seattle and KATU in Portland, OR in 2011, and KBAK-TV in Bakersfield, CA this year. Our plan is to eventually deploy it across the entire station group,” said Lee Wood, regional director of engineering for Fisher Communications, in Seattle, WA, which operates 13 full power and seven low power television stations across the U.S.

To verify regulatory compliance or diagnose technical issues on the recorded air-checks, Monitor IQ lets station engineers and operators watch HD video and listen to individual audio channels to check the quality their viewers experienced during the live broadcast.

They can also double-check the presence of vital metadata, such as closed captions, the Nielsen NAVE II Watermark, and picture identifier data (PID) embedded in the transport stream, as well as loudness levels now regulated by the U.S. CALM Act.

“All of our stations will use Monitor IQ primarily for regulatory compliance and loudness monitoring of our off-air HD and SD DTV channels,” Wood added. “Also, should a question ever arise as to whether a commercial spot ran as scheduled, Monitor IQ lets us to create a Windows Media video clip of the ad in the context of the programming to prove it ran as planned. Having this capability protects and preserves strong customer relations, revenues, and our credibility.”

While each Fisher station will manage and maintain its own compliance air-checks independently, station group management can check anything in any of their stations’ Monitor IQ databases remotely.

With its Web-based access and intuitive search tools, Monitor IQ ensures that any desired video segment will be readily accessible, easy to find, and viewable from any browser. Searching is based upon keywords, titles, subtitles, descriptions, textual metadata, closed-caption text and imported logs, with filtering by time, date and channel. Recordings can be easily edited, clipped, stored and sent via email or FTP.

“With mandates related to loudness levels, closed captioning, and other regulations, broadcasters need capable, scalable solutions designed to monitor their off-air signals for compliance,” said Ned Chini, vice president of sales and marketing for Digital Nirvana. “Monitor IQ also serves as a quality control solution that automatically logs technical issues, such as dropped audio or missing closed captions, and provides links to the video for easier access and review. We’re extremely pleased that Fisher Communications has entrusted their regulatory compliance and loudness monitoring to Monitor IQ.”

Bauder Audio Provides Support for Record-Breaking Camp Out for Hunger Benefit

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Bauder Audio Systems, Inc. (Philadelphia) and Indre Recording and Production (Havertown, PA) provided support, once again, for WMMR Radio’s Preston & Steve Show 2012 Camp Out for Hunger benefit. A complex, around-the-clock, five-day, live remote broadcast involving VIP guests, bands, outdoor stunts, and two dozen tractor trailers gathering food from thousands of generous people, The benefit collected a record-breaking 627,678 pounds of food and over $100K in monetary donations. Featured guests hailed from the worlds of sports, music, TV, and politics.

The event takes place in a large tent installed in the parking lot of the Metroplex Shopping Center in Plymouth Meeting. Bauder provided a new Yamaha CL5 digital console for use at FOH and for bands monitor mixes along with a Yamaha M7CL digital console with a Dugan-MY16 card for broadcast. The tent PA consisted of all NEXO loudspeakers powered by NXAMP 4×4’s and 4×1’s. PS15 R2s and RS18s were used for the main PA while PS10 R2s and PS8s were used for fold back and fills. The live bands were mixed down by Indre Recording’s broadcast truck outfitted with a Yamaha DM2000 and fed back to the M7CL.

“Whenever I’m working on a NEXO PA, I tend to simply pop the presets and go, as opposed to executing the normal laborious tuning process that other “out of the box” systems require,” states Chris “Sully” Sullivan, FOH Engineer. “It’s refreshing, and certainly saves money on labor calls.” Sully also used the new Yamaha CL5 digital console and said, “Even with no formal training on the CL5, within minutes I found my hands intuitively finding all of the knobs my brain was asking for….”

12 channels of stereo play back can be used for any given live band performance, helicopter landing, or other stunt taking place during a remote Preston and Steve Show. The core of the broadcast consists of five people talking about any number of topics on the radio. “In addition to the five primary mics, I can have anywhere from two hardwired guest mics to 10 wireless mics up and all running at one time,” states Rodney Byrd, Assistant Chief Engineer, Greater Philadelphia Radio Group. “With the introduction of the Dugan card for the Yamaha M7CL console, it has changed the dynamics of how I mix the show so much that it is now on my equipment rider. The sound quality that we experienced during the week of Camp Out for Hunger sounded like we were back in our own studio. I was able to walk out front and hear the PA without having to worry about whether all of the mics were up. It is like having an A1 that you don’t have to talk to; and it just works right out of the box.”

Indre Recording and Production of Philadelphia recently installed a Yamaha DM2000 digital console in their flagship remote truck. The remote recording package now offers 96 channels of audio from the stage via fiber optic snakes and MADI integration. “The DM2000 is doing double duty, serving as the main mixing console as well as a full Pro Tools control surface for the truck’s HDIII recorder,” states Michael Comstock, Owner and Head Engineer, Indre Recording.

Fox Spots Studio in Century City Adds Two Vista Systems’ Spyders to Feed Content to Seven Monitor Walls

A pair of Vista Systems’ Spyders are at the core of a Fox Sports Media Group studio in Century City, California where the NFL on Fox, UFC on Fox, College Football Saturday, and soccer coverage are produced.

Two Spyder X20-1608 systems, with 16 channels in and 8 channels out, run in parallel over 200 thin-bezel Sharp and NEC LCD displays plus three rotated 103-inch plasma screens. The Spyders feed seven different monitor walls and are used to route images to the appropriate wall. They’re in a matrix configuration, with the largest a 12×5 matrix.

Fox is using the key framing feature of the Spyders and is prebuilding sequences to display. The network needs to easily create different presets and scaling and the Spyders facilitate changing presets in the middle of a live show, which no other product can do. They satisfy Fox’s graphic and operational needs.”

Fox Sports Media Group had looked at various products before opting for the Spyders. They liked that they are 8-channel boxes and have a total of 16 channels each going. They also liked their ease of operation and flexibility.

Unitecnic Selects Vizrt Media Asset Management System for beIN SPORT

beIN SPORT, a global network of sports channels operated by Al Jazeera, launched a Viz Media Engine based workflow for archiving and overall media asset management of its extensive programming content. The system is being used for the launch of two new U.S. channels under the umbrella of beIN SPORT USA – beIN Sport HD, in English and beIN Ñ , in Spanish, both having SAP capabilities.

beIN SPORT USA is a Miami-based 24-hour provider of international sports coverage, currently being carried by Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks, Dish, Comcast, Liberty Cablevision and Direct TV.

The Viz Media Engine selection was made by Unitecnic, a Barcelona-based broadcast and multimedia engineering firm, for beIN SPORT. Unitecnic chose Viz Media Engine based upon the specific technical requirements of beIN SPORT and worked closely with the broadcaster throughout the installation and initial implementation of the system. Unitecnic worked with the Miami-based Imagina U.S., a production and broadcast services provider company, who provided the full operational service for beIN SPORT’s new channels in his own facility.

The Viz Media Engine is integrated with beIN’s Avid Media Composer editing system and its Grass Valley K2 video servers for both import and export. The Viz Media Engine provides access to all media. Using the K2 servers, it manages all of the channel’s playout tasks. WTVision’s Channelmaker playout automation system interfaces with the Viz Media Engine, monitoring playout and triggering transfer request between the Viz Media Engine and K2 servers as needed.

beIN went live with the Viz Media Engine MAM/archiving system at the end of October 2012. The hardware and software installation was completed in just four weeks, making the overall project duration from start to launch just two months. The rapid launch was a critical requirement for beIN SPORT.

Thanks to the Viz Media Engine integration, two new archiving workflows are possible:

1) From the Avid editing system, content can be manually imported into the Viz Media Engine and then exported (either manually or via an automated request) to the K2 playout server for review before on-air delivery.

2) From the K2 server, files can be manually transferred to the Viz Media Engine after broadcast. These files can originate as a direct ingest into the K2 or as a transferred file from Avid.

WTVision, a provider of real-time graphics and channel automation solutions, used the Viz Media Engine APIs, that are REST-based, to integrate the Viz Media Engine with beIN’s traffic and billing software from Broadway Systems.

Critical to beIN’s selection of the Viz Media Engine was the systems’ support of Sony’s XDCAM HD422 and how it handles partial restores. Viz Media Engine include advanced and proven technology to work with partial restore throughout the complete workflow from archiving to restoring media from the LTO tape library.

The storage capacity of the archive system is designed to last beIN well into the future, but the network is already looking into extending the size of the system and adding more groups to the MAM set up.

“The Viz Media Engine had everything we were looking for in a MAM and archive system to launch these important new channels in the U.S. market,” said Marc Andreu, Media Manager, beIN SPORT. “The ease of integration with the other manufacturers, ease of use for our operators and ability to restore XDCAM files were all must-haves to make our facility function as we envisioned. We are so excited to share this way with Vizrt.”

HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays Provide New Inspiration for Creative Audio

NORTHRIDGE, California – Creative Audio is a company that lives up to its name, always on the lookout for new and better products that enable the company to deliver better sound and lighting to its audiences and clients. For years, Creative Audio has supported country, comedy, rock and pop music tours in the U.S. and Canada for artists ranging from Larry the Cable Guy and George Lopez to Trace Adkins for his 2012 “Songs and Stories” tour. Adding HARMAN’s JBL VTX Series line array loudspeakers to its inventory was Creative Audio’s logical next step.

“We own and are very happy with our JBL VERTEC™ VT4888 line array loudspeakers—in fact, we own more than 100 VT4888 and VT4880 subwoofers combined—but our company had grown to the point where we needed to find a line array speaker that was more suited to large concerts,” said Chris Mentzel, Owner of Creative Audio. “JBL’s new VTX Series line arrays were announced around the same time we started looking, so the timing was perfect.”

“We looked at other line arrays but the VTX Series was our first choice, and we knew that if we went with anything else we might regret it,” Mentzel added. “When I found out that other major tour sound companies were starting to use the VTX Series, that also helped with our decision.”

The sheer output of the VTX line array elements is amazing, Mentzel pointed out. “We’re finding that you don’t need to use as many boxes as in the past with other line arrays,” he said. “In that sense, the VTX Series can actually save you money and space. The improved clarity and smoother frequency response are readily noticeable, as is the even coverage pattern.”

“As a sound contractor there’s another practical consideration we have to deal with—our gear has to be rider-friendly,” noted Mentzel. “I think it’s clear that more and more artists, promoters and venues are going to be specifying the VTX Series in light of their exceptional performance.”

Creative Audio has already put its new VTX system to the test at a number of events, including the Southern Illinois Country Fest at the Worldshooting and Recreation Complex in Sparta, Illinois. For the 3-day festival, Creative Audio deployed a left-right configuration of 12 V25 fullsize line array elements per side, while ground-stacking nine G28 subwoofers per side.

“The first night the headliner was Trace Adkins, the second night was Dierks Bentley and the third night was Tim McGraw,” Mentzel said. “Every engineer working the festival loved the system. That was also the very first time we used the rig and we were blown away.”

Creative Audio recently completed a 12-show Christmas tour featuring country music star Martina McBride, which spanned the U.S. and Canada. For these arena dates, Creative Audio provided left-right hangs of 12 V25 line array elements per side, with six G28 ground-stacked subwoofers per side. For shows where additional out fill was required, Creative Audio also supplied 12 VT4888 midsize line array elements per side.

Most recently, Creative Audio provided its VTX system for a sold-out New Year’s Eve performance by folk-rock band The Avett Brothers at the 12,000-seat Greensboro Coliseum Complex in North Carolina. The PA system featured 12 V25 line array elements per side, eight G28 ground-stacked subwoofers per side, with 12 VT4888 line array elements per side for out fill.

“As has been our experience since purchasing the rig, the VTX system filled the arena with no problems,” Mentzel concluded.

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets — supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon® and Mark Levinson®. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems. HARMAN has a workforce of about 13,900 people across the Americas, Europe and Asia, and reported net sales of $4.4 billion for year ended June 30, 2012.
