University of Iowa Installs PixelFLEX LED Curtain for Use in Three Unique Campus Theatre Venues

Featuring three unique theatre venues on campus, the University of Iowa theatre department recently turned to PixelFLEX and its ultra-flexible and extremely portable LED Curtain systems to enhance the school’s live productions. The department recently installed a PixelFLEX 30mm LED Curtain to provide video and graphic elements to its 500-seat pristine theater, as well as the school’s 60′ x 60′ black box modular space and 140-seat theaters.

“We have a production-heavy department, with about 200 undergraduate students and about 40-45 grad students in directing, design, writing, acting and stage management,” said Bryon Winn, the University’s director of theatre. “Each year, we produce about five large-scale main stage shows and then a number of shows on our other stages, so we were looking for a video wall system that we could use between our multiple stages. Ideally, we wanted something that was durable, lightweight and supported here in the United States. With its LED Curtain and offices in Tennessee, PixelFLEX was the answer.”

Featuring 1100 pixels PSM (Per Square Meter) and 1800 brightness, PixelFLEX’s LED Curtain offers the University of Iowa’s theatre department a solution that is easy to set up and operate – videos and images can be sent to the screen using any computer with a DVI-D connection. For this project, PixelFLEX developed custom-size panels – tailored specifically for the University’s installation – totaling approximately 28.32′ x 15.74′.

Having received the Curtain in October 2012, the theatre department used it in tandem with a black rear production (RP) screen for eight performances of “Spring Awakening.” The system’s performance, according to Winn, was fantastic.

“I had heard of people using an LED wall or panel system and then using an RP screen to soften the look, but I’d never seen it before,” Winn remarked. “We looked at the Curtain raw and then we looked at it behind a soft surface. It was really great.”

As is the case in most performance environments, ease of installation and portability was critical to the student production team. The ability to hang the Curtain video wall on a standard theatrical rigging system without using chain motors, and the fact that the entire system can be folded up and loaded into three or four road boxes added value for Winn and his team.

“Storage and ease of set-up in comparison with other systems we were looking at was important,” Winn admitted. “Knowing that we can load a show in, use the Curtain and then load the show out without any difficulties or significant manpower is wonderful.”

With students scheduled to return to the campus, Winn is excited to see how the theatre department can utilize PixelFLEX’s solution in the modular space and intimate 140-seat facility.

“The black box space doesn’t have a great way of doing RP – there’s just not enough depth in the space,” Winn remarked. “So the ability to hang the LED Curtain in there where we don’t need any depth at all and still be able to generate graphics is of great excitement to our team. People are looking for ways to capitalize on the system’s features to maximize viewer enjoyment.”

Flexible in all directions and exceptionally durable, PixelFLEX LED Curtains are able to bend and shape around structures for a more creative display effect. Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800s Debut with The Pennsylvania Ballet

The Pennsylvania Ballet, which makes its home in Philadelphia, is shining a new light on its 25th anniversary production of “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker” by using a dozen Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800 fixtures supplied by Pin Point Lighting in Aston.

One of the nation’s premier ballet companies since 1963, The Pennsylvania Ballet continues the enchanting holiday tradition of staging “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker,” which is marked by spectacular sets and costumes and appearances by The Philadelphia Boys Choir and local dance students. Pin Point Lighting provides quality lighting equipment rentals, production and design in the Philadelphia area and nationally. Since 2000 the company has been the exclusive professional lighting supplier for The Pennsylvania Ballet.

Pin Point Lighting’s John Duncan, who also serves as assistant electrician with the ballet, suggested the Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800s to lighting designer John Hoey. “We needed to change out from our old fixtures,” Duncan says. “I had looked at the Alpha Spot QWO 800s a couple of months ago and thought they would be great. We try to think ahead and pick fixtures that will be around for the next ten years.”

Clay Paky’s Alpha Spot QWO 800 uses the latest MSR Platinum lamp, an 800W light source that produces an intense sparkling light – brighter even than older 1200W lamps. The Alpha Spot QWO 800 is equipped with optical features placing it at the top of its class, including a very wide zoom range from 7.6º to 55º, a uniform beam distribution at all zoom angles and a unique Stay-Sharp-Zoom feature that locks images in focus while zooming. The fixture is small, lightweight, silent and has low power consumption making it an excellent tool for TV, theater, corporate events and many other demanding lighting applications.

The lights are making their debut with the ballet on the beloved holiday production, which is drawing packed houses. “They are performing perfectly,” Duncan reports.

A.C.T Lighting is the North American distributor for Clay Paky.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “The QWO 800 is one of our newest fixtures and we’re thrilled to see it applied to so many interesting applications such as this one.”

Irish Theatre Discovers Point Source Audio’s Waterproof Mic

Performs Impeccably in Major Downpours, Renowned Sound Designer Impressed

Petaluma, CA –Last November, Vinny Osborne was on deadline, preparing for Singin’ in the Rain to be performed by the Port Laois Musical Society in Ireland. He had a special need for an earset microphone which could better handle water immersion as well as deliver impeccable audio quality. The celebrated Irish sound designer—who has been nominated 11 times (winning seven) for Best Technical Award by the Association of Irish Musical Societies—got to work. He did his research, performed rigorous testing, and chose Point Source Audio’s CO-5w waterproof microphone for his lead actor.

Point Source Audio's CO-5w Waterproof Microphone

Point Source Audio’s CO-5w Waterproof Earset Mic Performs for Singin’ in the Rain’s Lead Actor

Singin’ in the Rain performed for packed houses and the CO-5w earset never let us down,” Mr. Osborne said. “There were three major downpours during the two-and-one-half hour show,” he explained. The CO-5w waterproof mic has an impressive Ingress Protection (IP) rating of 57, making it ideal for vocalists, theater actors and other performers who need to defend against sweat and makeup. “I would strongly recommend these earset microphones to anyone in a similar circumstance or for any theatrical or broadcast application,” Mr. Osborne stated unequivocally. The renowned sound designer knows quality: over the past 25 years, he and his Sound and Music Company, based near Dublin, have provided expert engineering for events involving such dignitaries as Queen Elizabeth and a number of U.S. and Irish Presidents. Other clients have included Riverdance the Show, U2, Bryan Adams, Sinead O’Connor and Tiger Woods.

According to Mr. Osborne, “Not only did the mic withstand the rain, it fits really well and sounds crystal clear. It is a very crisp and very live mic with plenty of level. In fact, we had to back the Sennheiser transmitter sensitivity down quite a bit to handle the input.” Launched by Point Source Audio in April, 2012, the CO-5w is the waterproof version of PSA’S very popular CO-5 omnidirectional earset microphone capable of handling up to 125dB SPL. Due to the rigorous dance routines of the show, Mr. Osborne selected the CO-5w-KIT dual earset microphone which includes a reversible dual-ear mounting accessory, windscreens and clothing clip.

“Point Source Audio’s staff was also great to deal with when helping me to meet my tight deadline,” Mr. Osborne added.

Alan Parsons Hosts Recording Master Classes in Vegas and Nashville in February

Legendary producer continues workshop series with new events

Santa Cruz, Calif. Dateline Jan 10, 2013: Alan Parsons announces two new Master Class Training Sessions to be held at top studios in Las Vegas (Studio At The Palms on Feb 1st and 2nd) and Nashville (Ocean Way on Feb 11th and 12th).

In keeping with the tradition of these popular training workshops—previous events have been held in Los Angeles, Toronto, Bogota, and Buenos Aires—Alan Parsons has given each event its own unique theme: Vegas is titled “Iconic Instrumentals” and looks at the creation of music suitable for live music productions or international sporting events. The Vegas event also features a special section on Surround 5.1 mixing, for which Alan is rightly renowned, and for which he was GRAMMY®-Nominated in 2007.

The Nashville event is titled “The Art Of The Song” and takes Alan back to his roots working with some of the greatest pop songwriters of the twentieth century: The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and of course his own acclaimed recording career with The Alan Parsons Project.

Both events offer a “life-changing” (as one recent attendee put it) chance to make a new record in a great studio with an award-winning recording professional, looking at everything from mic’ing techniques and studio etiquette to processing and mixing.

Tickets are offered at the Platinum level—actually working with Alan in the control room—and the Gold “Video Village,” where blow-by-blow live video is fed to Attendees seated in the studio green room. All ticket holders get Q&A time and the chance to mingle with Alan during breaks and at the Champagne Reception at the end of Day 1.

Hometown Church for Lincoln Brewster Replaces Existing Point ‘N Shoot System with NEXO GEO S12 Line Array

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The Bayside Church in Roseville, California, known to many as the home to house of worship leader and influential musician, Lincoln Brewster, recently upgraded its speaker system for their 2,300-seat main campus location with a NEXO GEO S12 line array, RS18′s, and NXAmps. Bayside Church has a total of four locations, and over 12,000 members of the congregation attend worship services on any given weekend. Bayside Church and Brewster, who frequently leads worship at the church when not on tour, have considerable influence on the Christian scene. “Lincoln was very much involved in our decision to replace our existing d&b system with the NEXO system,” states Lee Fields, Senior Audio Director for all audio systems and audio staff across the campuses. “It was really a joint effort; Lincoln trusts me, but at the same time, I don’t underestimate his talents either. He is an incredible audio engineer in his own right. After all, he has mixed most of his own records.” The NEXO system was purchased through Special Event Services (SES), Sacramento.

Fields said that the core of the change in line array systems was that the church seating had changed drastically. “The d&b system was a point and shoot system that mainly covered the floor (about 900 seats), and large delay boxes covered the remaining 1,000ish seats in the bleacher sections. The new seating arrangement is still 900 on the floor and another 1,400 or so in new stadium-style seats, adding in another 500 new seating locations. With the previous system, over half of the seating area would have been in coverage by delay speakers—not ideal with the worship experience we are trying to create. The NEXO line array has allowed us to cover the room much better from a single source, and every seat sounds amazing and surprisingly similar to the next.” On a typical weekend, Bayside’s worship band consists of 6-7 contemporary worship musicians.

The second reason for the change out the system was a bit more philosophical Fields notes. “Lincoln and I both have been to hundreds of churches and have seen a variety of PA systems: PAs that rival stadium touring rigs, PAs way too small for big rooms, PAs way too big for small rooms, PAs that sound great and are just right for a church, and PAs that cost way too much money for a church to be spending money on. With all that said, we finally found a product that far exceeds our needs sonically and that is also a perfect representation of being a good steward when it comes to our church’s money. This is the biggest win for us on a personal level, knowing that we didn’t have to spend zillions of dollars on a system. We are astonished by the performance of the GEO S12 rig/ It feels great knowing our church can go about the duty of assisting people with the money we saved by choosing the product we did, and we didn’t sacrifice anything, rather, we gained everything.”

Fields has been a touring engineer for close to ten years and says he’s literally seen all of the various line arrays available. “I kept running across the GEO S12 at medium size festivals, at conferences, and other events. Every time I got my hands on them, I loved them! A huge bonus is how supportive the team at Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems has been. Jake Cody, the House of Worship Manager, has been an invaluable resource to me, Lincoln, and to our church. The heart of the Company, and Jake, is to help churches in anyway they can. The same can be said for Greg Slape from SES. They believe that NEXO being an elite brand can provide churches what they require in a line array, but at an affordable price point. The quality of the service from Yamaha and SES is unmatched in this industry, and I don’t think anyone would disagree.”

“We chose the NEXO Geo S12 because it was the best sounding box we tried,” adds Brewster. “It also happened to be the least expensive, and in my opinion, is the best value in line-array systems today.” The three other Bayside Church locations are using NEXO systems with NX Amps and Yamaha LS9 Digital Consoles. In total, there are over ten Yamaha digital consoles across all Bayside Church venues. On this year’s Christmas tour, Lincoln Brewster took along a pair of the new Yamaha CL5 Digital Consoles as well as a NEXO GEO S12 system, which Fields said, had big advantages so rehearsals could be accomplished at their own church with the exact PA used for the tour.
