Attendees at Live Design’s 2012 Concert Master Classes See Robert Juliat Followspots in Action at Springsteen Concert

Robert Juliat participated in Live Design’s 2012 Concert Master Classes at USC, Los Angeles last month showcasing its fixtures for those attending the immersive two-day event and accompanying attendees to a performance of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, whose tour rig includes Robert Juliat Manon and Topaze followspots.

The Concert Master Classes by Live Design annually brings together the touring industry’s top designers to discuss lighting and projection design challenges for the world of concerts. Award-winning lighting designer Jeff Ravitz, creative consultant to the classes, chaired an overview session on concert lighting design and gave a very personal perspective on how he lit Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball Tour in another session. Other panelists included Steve Cohen, Marc Janowitz, Steve Lieberman, Anne Militello and Seth Jackson.

Robert Juliat’s Fred Lindauer and Alan Keen were on hand for up-close-and-personal talks with attendees during the Manufacturers’ Showcase. They also highlighted the real-world application of three Manon and eight Topaze followspots for the Springsteen concert at the Honda Center in nearby Anaheim.

“Prior to the show attendees were treated to a behind-the-lighting-scenes tour by production lighting director Todd Ricci and programmer Jason Badger, which was very informative,” says Lindauer. “The lighting rig for the tour is supplied by Morpheus Lights; our Manon and Topaze fixtures are all specially configured for the tour. In addition, four Robert Juliat Lancelot followspots are employed when Springsteen plays stadium dates.”

Robert Juliat’s presence at the Concert Master Classes couldn’t have been more high profile, he notes. “The Manufacturers’ Showcase and the excursion to see Springsteen gave attendees a great idea of how Robert Juliat lighting works in the concert environment,” Lindauer concludes.

MuxLab Launches New HD-SDI to HDMI Extender Kit

AMSTERDAM, INTEGRATED SYSTEMS EUROPE, Booth # P-122 — MuxLab Inc. is pleased to announce the launch of the newest addition to its HD-SDI family; the HD-SDI to HDMI Extender Kit (500715). This new product converts HD-SDI to HDMI and then transmits it up to 330 ft (100m) via Cat5e/6 cable at all resolutions in a point-to-point configuration.

Ideal for various applications such as video production, broadcasting, post-production, and medical imaging displays, the 500715 supports SDI-SMPTE 259M-C (270Mbps), HD-SDI-SMPTE 292M (1.485, 1.485/1.001 Gbps), and HD-SDI-SMPTE 424M/425M (2.97/3.0 Gbps). For extended distances, the unit also supports up to 400 ft (122m) via Cat6 cable.

“This product has so many uses, like HD/SD routing and HD CCTV. The 500715 allows a more cost-efficient HDMI display to be used instead of a more costly HD-SDI monitor in video production applications. Furthermore the product eliminates the need for a separate HD-SDI-to-HDMI converter and HDMI extender thereby minimizing the number of points of failure and providing a total end-to-end solution” said Marc Bohbot, MuxLab’s Director of R&D. “We are extremely excited about the launch of this new product”.

The HD-SDI to HDMI Extender Kit supports transmission of up to 2.97/3.0 Gbps uncompressed, un-encrypted digital video (optionally including embedded Audio and/or Time Code) within television facilities and between professional video equipment.

Masque Sound Goes Back To School to Equip Brooklyn Tech with New Turnkey Audio System

New York City’s Third Largest Auditorium Receives Professional Audio Upgrade

BROOKLYN, NY, JANUARY 28, 2013—When Brooklyn Tech High School, one of New York City’s most prestigious public high schools, needed to overhaul the outdated audio system in its 80-year-old auditorium, it called on Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, to do the job. The company equipped the majestic hall with a range of state-of-the-art audio equipment.

Built in 1933, Brooklyn Tech is home to the third largest auditorium in New York, second only to Radio City Music Hall and the Metropolitan Opera House. Featuring seating for 3,100 and two balconies, the auditorium underwent a 2010 architectural makeover designed to preserve the hall’s 20th century elegance. The Masque Sound upgrade, meanwhile, brought the audio capacity up to 21st-century, professional-caliber productions standards.

Sub-contracted by Midland Electric and working with acoustical design firm Criterion Acoustics, the team at Masque Sound put together a package comprising state-of-the art equipment from d&b, Peavey Electronics Corporation, Crestron, Blackmagic and L-ACOUSTICS. “From a functionality standpoint, we wanted to provide Brooklyn Tech with a turnkey solution,” says Matt Peskie, systems engineer, Masque Sound. “From the cabling infrastructure to the speakers, and all other audio equipment in between, everything has been replaced.”

A significant part of Masque Sound’s involvement in the project was speaker and sound reinforcement. The existing setup in the auditorium never had speakers that could completely cover underneath the first balcony or the upper balcony. Masque Sound installed two rows of delay speakers under the balcony, and one row in the upper balcony, which significantly improves the clarity of sound for those seated in those areas.

Peskie integrated an array of speakers from d&b for the upgrade. “I like the tonality and flexibility of the d&b speakers,” he notes. “They provide a very natural sound straight out of the box. We used seven different models of their speakers on this particular job. d&b has a wide array of products for different needs and applications, so we were easily able to install a speaker that was the size we needed and would give us the output and coverage required.”

Masque Sound also incorporated all d&b proprietary D6 & D12 amplifiers, which are loaded with every preset required for the individual speaker models. The speakers work in conjunction with the d&b R1 control software system, making it easy to set up user pages to aid in system tuning. The amplifiers, in turn, also utilize a Lyntec sequencer, making it simple to power them on and off. Users can get the system up and running with the push of a button in 20 seconds. Masque Sound also used the Peavey MediaMatrix units for all of the audio DSP. Media Matrix allowed the audio system to interface with Crestron, as well as all other venue audio distribution and processing.

Masque Sound also installed a Crestron TPS-6X tilt touch screen to give the end user a straight forward interface with the system. It combines a 5.7-inch active-matrix display and powerful Isys engine to produce stunning 16-bit color graphics with extreme versatility and lightning-fast performance. Users control all the technology in the upgraded auditorium with the Crestron TPS-6X interface.

“The auditorium is absolutely spectacular. It now sounds as amazing as it looks,” adds Peskie. “Masque Sound is committed to providing schools with state-of-the art solutions that will allow students and those involved in the arts programs at the schools to have the audio resources they need to create whatever they can dream up.”

Built on its present site in the 1930s, at a cost of $6 million, Brooklyn Technical High School, commonly known as Brooklyn Tech, is the largest specialized high school for science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the United States. Twelve stories high, it covers more than half a city block. Operated by the New York City Department of Education, the school was cited by The Washington Post in 2006 as one of the best magnet schools in the United States.

About Masque Sound
Founded in 1936 by a trio of Broadway stagehands, Masque Sound evolved into one of NYC’s most successful theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design companies specializing in theatrical, house of worship, sporting, corporate, TV broadcast and live concert events. Celebrating more than 75 years in the industry, the company is lead by Geoff Shearing, the firm’s 3rd generation owner, and General Manager Stephanie Hansen. The company also operates Florida-based Professional Wireless Systems, a leader in the development and implementation of wireless technology. Credits range from major Broadway shows and tours including “Phantom of the Opera,” “Mamma Mia!,” “Lion King,” “Jersey Boys,” “Memphis,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Newsies” and “Once” to yearly Super Bowl broadcasts and installations of varying sizes, including New York’s New Victory Theater and historic St. Bartholomew’s Church. Masque Sound’s 70,000 sq. ft. corporate headquarters and main assembly facility is located at 21 East Union Ave., East Rutherford, NJ, 20 minutes from midtown Manhattan. OPTOCORE TO SHOWCASE NEW RANGE OF MADI SWITCHES AT ISE 2013

Company Cites Advantages of MADI plus Ethernet over CAT cabling

AMSTERDAM, JANUARY 28, 2013 – Optocore, the leading provider of scalable, high-bandwidth, low-latency fiber-optic networks, for the transmission of audio, video and data in a variety of markets, including pro AV, live and fixed installations and broadcast, will launch its revolutionary new range of MADI Switches at ISE 2013 (Booth 3-A120). Developed specifically for professional audio and video users, Optocore’s new MADI Switches have extremely low power consumption, latency and setup time.

Equipped with 10 or 18 ports of MADI, the switches allow distribution over Cat5 cabling, in addition to MADI over fiber and MADI over BNC. The RJ45 MADI ports on the new products will introduce greater flexibility, lower cost and simplification of MADI connectivity. Additionally, each switch has two redundant high-speed 2GB fiber uplink ports that switch and route sixteen MADI streams and Ethernet, for creating larger switches for large size infrastructure.

“We believe this to be a great solution for the professional AV market,” says Tine Helmle, director, Optocore. “MADI is a common and open standard, as opposed to the closed proprietary Audio over Ethernet formats, with MADI ports frequently being used by manufacturers as a way to offer customers an affordable, forward-thinking open platform. By introducing the MADI Switches, Optocore is offering a greater number of options with the best technical features at a budget-friendly price.”

Each port on the MADI Switch allows for a 64-in/64-out point-to-point connection, as well as 100Mb of Ethernet on one single Cat5 cable. At the same time, the MADI Switch enables routing of each individual audio channel, providing a 640 x 640 matrix for the 10-port switch and a 1152 x 1152 matrix for the 18-port switch. It can also connect using the redundant uplink ports with up to 24 additional MADI Switches, providing audio switching and routing while additionally functioning as an Ethernet switch.

The new MADI Switches are fully compatible with Optocore and SANE. Optocore plans to develop the new devices into a complete series of MADI devices with six, 10 and 18 port switches with Cat5, fiber and BNC connectivity.

Technomad Loudspeakers Upgrade Audio in French Football Stadium

New system complies with Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) standards thanks to broad audio dispersion, high voice intelligibility of Noho loudspeakers

BOSTON, January 28, 2013Stade Francois Coty, a French football stadium in the Corsican city of Ajaccio, France, has completed audio upgrades compliant to league standards, with seven Technomad advanced audio loudspeakers covering the entire venue.

Home club AC Ajaccio recently transitioned to Ligue 2, also known as Division 2 in the LFP French professional football league. The league-imposed audio upgrades required a higher measure of intelligibility and audio coverage throughout the stadium — a quality the previous audio system lacked.

Systems integration company Atacc International worked with French Technomad dealer Audiopole to develop the new system, ensuring intelligible voice and music is audible throughout the stands. The design also considered financial and structural challenges, including minimal hanging points for the latter. But the challenge of protecting gear in the open stadium air was top of mind for both companies.

“Our main concern was undoubtedly the weather, and Technomad loudspeakers are 100 percent weatherproof,” said Alain Castelli, manager, Atacc International. “They can withstand wind, rain, moisture and temperatures as cold as 0 degrees Celsius in the winter; and as hot as 30 degrees Celsius in the summer. The sea is also nearby, so salt corrosion was another concern.”

Audiopole provided an acoustic study of the stadium prior to installing the seven Technomad Noho loudspeakers in the stands, behind the goals, and within a VIP space and visitors area. The study determined that the Noho was the best model for the project, providing excellent coverage and full-range audio — including ideal sensitivity for speech. The complete system includes Yamaha amplifiers and mixers, a Shure ULX Series microphone, and an automated playout system for security announcements.

“This was our first time using Technomad, and we are very pleased,” said Castelli. “The observed power of the Nohos in comparison to their size is very impressive, and the responsiveness from Audiopole was also excellent.”

ABOUT TECHNOMAD
Technomad LLC, founded in 1995, designs and manufactures loudspeaker systems for the professional audio and security/military technology industries. The company invented the first reliable full-range weatherproof loudspeaker and now offers nine models ranging in power from 60-watt loudspeakers to 1250-watt subwoofers — most available in Turnkey PA System packages featuring amplifiers, mixers and other signal processing equipment in pre-wired racks. The company also manufactures a variety of audio infrastructure and communications equipment including playback and recording systems, weatherproof power amplifiers and turnkey remote audio systems. Retailers Must Implement In-Store Digital Signage To Decrease Costs and Increase Messaging And Sales

Customer-facing businesses that want to stay relevant to an increasingly mobile consumer audience must learn from the digital signage revolution transforming public spaces everywhere and implement in-store digital signage solutions that reduce costs, improve messaging and drive sales — according to Stampede Presentation Products, Inc. President & COO Kevin Kelly.

“Digital signage is transforming the way companies inform, entertain and sell to today’s increasingly mobile consumer population in both indoor and outdoor public spaces, as dramatic advances in display technology, installation methods and maintenance make it possible to deploy signage faster than ever before,” Kelly said today. “As this revolution continues, retailers must learn to deploy the same technologies in their own in-store sales environment in order to stay relevant to their customers, as it is the only economically feasible way to sell customers now and in the future.”

According to Kelly, retailers who think that the cost of implementing an in-store digital signage solution is exorbitant haven’t taken the time to do their homework. “The total cost of creating and constantly replacing printed POP materials is huge, and its impact on consumers decreases every day. Moving images move people to connect and consume. With a digital signage solution, retailers can quickly adapt to their customers preferences. They can change pricing, launch promotions, host micro events and adapt their messaging based on minute-to-minute developments within the store environment.”

Kelly stressed that retailers who are not yet putting digital signage to work within their sales environment need to meet with their AV integrator to plan a creative and cost-effective conversion program that’s right for them. Beyond the core requirements of lighting, background audio, displays and digital signage, retailers should consider other components such as custom-shaped large-format displays, interactive touch panels and eco-friendly and economical LED lighting.

“No two retail environments are alike, and it’s important for every retailer to find a digital signage solution that conforms to the unique needs of their business,” Kelly added. “Dealers often make the mistake of thinking that their retail customers can’t afford to install a digital signage solution in their environment. The fact of the matter is that they can’t afford not to install a system — and dealers can help them do it in a creative way that’s also cost-effective. Now is the time for retailers to keep their sales environments relevant and start their own digital signage revolution!”

Stampede Presentation Products, Inc. will exhibit a complete range of digital signage solutions at Digital Signage Expo 2013 in Booth #1125 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
