Extron Expands HDMI Distribution Amplifier Lineup

Extron HDMI DA SeriesExtron Electronics is pleased to introduce two new, larger HDMI distribution amplifiers as part of its HDMI DA Series product line. The HDMI DA4 with four outputs, and HDMI DA6 with six outputs, are HDCP compliant and support HDMI specification features including data rates up to 6.75 Gbps, 12-bit Deep Color, 3D, Lip Sync, and HD lossless audio formats. They also support HDTV 1080p/60 and PC resolutions up to 1920×1200. For ease of integration and reliable operation, the HDMI DA Series features two Extron-exclusive technologies: EDID Minder®, which maintains continuous EDID communication between connected devices, and Key Minder®, which continuously authenticates HDCP encryption between all devices, ensuring the simultaneous distribution of source content to connected displays. The HDMI DA Series is ideal for applications that require the distribution of an HDMI source signal to multiple displays.

“The Extron HDMI DA2 has fast become a favorite of AV integrators, and many have asked for the same robust feature set in larger sizes,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Extron. “The new HDMI DA4 and HDMI DA6 are designed for the demands of commercial AV integration in larger system designs, while maintaining the same ease of setup and installation found in all of our HDMI products.”

To enhance and simplify integration, the HDMI DA Series offers integrator-friendly features, including automatic input cable equalization, automatic color bit depth management, and selectable output muting, as well as indicators for monitoring and troubleshooting. Input cable equalization restores and reshapes incoming HDMI signals, reducing the need for additional signal conditioning equipment by compensating for weak source signals or signal loss from a long input cable. The HDMI DA Series automatically adjusts color bit depth based on the display EDID, preventing color compatibility conflicts between source and display. Outputs can be muted independently via RS-232, allowing content to be previewed on a local monitor. Additionally, the distribution amplifiers provide immediate visual confirmation of EDID status, HDCP authentication, and signal presence confirmation for each port via front panel LED indicators.

Four DiGiCo Consoles Are Manna From Heaven

In 2012, a DiGiCo SD7 was installed in Jiguchon Church in the South Korea’s Bundang New City. Such was its success that four more of the company’s mixers have now been installed in another church in the city, demonstrating how DiGiCo mixing consoles are making significant inroads into the country’s house of worship market.

Featuring a state-of-the-art technical specification, the new Manna Methodist Church has a seating capacity of 4,000, with around 10,000 worshippers attending each week. Services feature a live band, choir, organ and orchestra, so the audio system needed a high input channel count, as well as facilities to mix live audio for broadcast on its own Internet channel.

The church consulted DiGiCo’s South Korean distributor Soundus Corporation, who supplied and installed an SD7 console at Front of House, with four SD-Racks and an SD8-24 to take care of the live broadcast mix. In addition, Soundus supplied an SD9 for a mobile audio system and an SD11 for the church video editing suite.

“The decision to use DiGiCo consoles was based on the SD7’s ability to handle more than 200 input channels, the dual engine offering stability, reliable redundancy and excellent sound quality,” says Soundus sales manager Byung Chul Park. “The church also needed additional mixing consoles and it was an obvious decision to stay with the same manufacturer.”

Utilising an Optocore fibre optic network, this solution made for a seamless solution throughout the church.

“The system is very versatile and is easily expandable for any future requirements,” concludes Byung Chul. “The church is very happy with it.”

DPA Microphones’ d:facto II Vocal Mic Makes Its Rental Debut

ALLEROED, DENMARK, FEBRUARY 21, 2013 – After a live test of DPA Microphones’ original d:facto™ Vocal Microphone at London’s Royal Festival Hall, sound production and rental company RNSS was so impressed with the mic’s performance that the company has placed an order for six of the new d:facto II Vocal Microphones.

Prior to the purchase, RNSS specified DPA d:facto Vocal Microphones as part of the audio equipment for the London Jazz Festival, an annual event produced in association with BBC Radio 3. Hailed as the capital’s biggest pan-city music festival, The London Jazz Festival featured artists such as Herbie Hancock and Lucinda Williams.

“We have had a long association with DPA Microphones and already carry a large stock of the company’s products,” says Richard Nowell, director of RNSS. “I was intrigued by the new d:facto Vocal Microphone and was keen to try it out. The Jazz Festival gave us the perfect opportunity to put it through its paces. We borrowed two d:factos from DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network and used them as high-end alternatives to our usual vocal mics. The mics performed flawlessly and delivered exceptional sound that was much appreciated by the artists and the sound crew. The mics’ ability to filter out unwanted noise meant that we could safely use them for singers who were performing in front of an orchestra without the risk of vocals being drowned out.”

One of the artists who used DPA’s d:facto Vocal Microphone was Kris Kristofferson who performed at the Royal Festival Hall shortly after the Jazz Festival.

“We held onto the microphones because we liked them so much and wanted to use them for Kris’ concert,” explains Nowell. “Kris is interested in sound and is always open to trying something new. He really liked the structure and tonal quality of the d:facto and was very happy with the results it delivered.”

Equally at home in sound reinforcement and recording applications, DPA’s new d:facto II Vocal microphone offers an extraordinarily natural sound, high separation and extreme SPL handling, giving users unlimited possibilities for their performances. In addition to use with the new wired DPA handle, the d:facto provides singers and engineers with the added benefit of a state-of-the-art adapter system that allows for seamless integration with many professional wireless systems including Sony, Lectrosonics, Shure, Wisycom and Sennheiser. The d:facto provides improved audio performance as it is superbly linear in frequency and phase, both on- and off-axis, while its impressive definition and accuracy reproduces a singer’s voice effortlessly.

RNSS will be taking delivery of its new DPA d:facto Vocal Microphones in a few weeks time and is already anticipating plenty of interest.

“We have decided to buy six of the new d:facto II microphones so that we can use them with our existing wireless systems,” concludes Nowell. ”We see huge potential for these microphones as rental items because they are so versatile. The adapter system will give our customers plenty of options as they can either use a wired DPA handle or the professional wireless system of their choosing, with no loss in the sound quality.”

NEW Nexidia CC Director
Making its debut at the 2013 NAB Show, Nexidia CC Director is an application that automatically repurposes on-air closed captioning for broadcast and IP distribution in order to satisfy broadcast requirements for the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act. Live and file-based caption information is reused to recaption clips and programs for delivery to the Web, tablets, and other Internet-connected devices.

Nexidia CC Director is designed to enable dynamic, low-latency caption retrieval from a caption catalog storing years’ worth of captions. The captions are available within minutes of broadcast and can be retrieved without metadata or even the broadcast date. Users simply pass a clip of audio or video through the application, and CC Director will return the time-corrected caption file.

CC Director reduces the cost of re-syncing or re-creating captions for live-captioned programming that is being edited for rebroadcast or non-linear distribution. It also verifies caption information, improves caption timing compared to the original captioning, and reduces turnaround time for publishing clips and full programs.

Front Porch Digital Announces Broad Support for Archive eXchange Format

Open, Storage-Agnostic Technology in Place at Archiving and Production Operations Around the World

LOUISVILLE, Colo. — Feb. 19, 2013 — Front Porch Digital, the global leader in cloud-based content storage management (CSM) solutions, today announced that its Archive eXchange Format (AXF) open-archiving technology is seeing broad adoption among archivists and media organizations around the world. Installations at esteemed organizations such as Laboratoire Éclair, The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (NIBG), Danish Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute, and others, along with support from Spectra Logic and integration with Sony’s Optical Disc Archive technology, position AXF to replace outmoded legacy formats such as TAR with a truly open and storage-agnostic approach, ensuring long-term accessibility to the world’s most valuable content.

“Our aim in developing AXF was to support interoperability among disparate digital-content storage systems and ensure the content’s long-term availability no matter how technology evolves,” said Brian Campanotti, chief technology officer of Front Porch Digital. “The fact that these organizations and others have embraced AXF puts it well on the way to achieving critical mass and becoming the industry standard for long-term preservation and storage of media assets. In fact, the AXF standardization effort is nearing completion within SMPTE and we expect ratification this year.”

AXF is integrated into DIVArchive(R) V7.0, the latest generation of Front Porch Digital’s acclaimed CSM system. To ensure wider accessibility, Front Porch Digital has also released stand-alone tools such as AXF Explorer that allow access to AXF packages and media without the need for DIVArchive. France’s pioneering movie and television production house Laboratoire Éclair linked its DIVArchive V7.0 installation with its full production and postproduction environment to streamline workflow, while its customers have access to long-term storage services managed with the system. In addition, the Danish Film Institute and Swedish Film Institute have built their digitization, archiving, and preservation workflows around DIVArchive V7.0 to protect their national film heritage.

Beyond installations, in September 2012 Spectra Logic became the first vendor verified to support AXF across its entire range of tape libraries and tape drives. Also, Front Porch Digital and Sony(R) have collaborated to ensure AXF is compatible with Sony’s Optical Disc Archive expandable robotic library. Customers who use DIVArchive V7.0 with Spectra Logic products or the Sony system will get the benefit of long-term storage and preservation through AXF.

AXF is built from the ground up to be fully storage-agnostic, meaning that an AXF object is the same whether it is stored on spinning disk, flash memory, data tape media, or in Front Porch Digital’s LYNX(SM) cloud service. In this way, users avoid the complexity associated with file systems, storage technologies, or operating systems.

More information about the AXF format and Front Porch Digital products is available at fpdigital.com and OpenAXF.org.

DPA Microphones Capture An Operatic Sensation

Audio hire specialist RG Jones specified a wide selection of DPA microphones for a recent series of concerts by Katherine Jenkins, a multi-platinum selling mezzo soprano and one of Britain’s best loved singers.

For two weeks at the end of 2012 Katherine Jenkins sold out venues around the UK and Ireland, including London’s Royal Albert Hall. During the tour she was supported by the National Symphony Orchestra and London Philharmonic Choir, conducted by Anthony Inglis. She was also joined by guests such as The Boy Choristers of St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle and The Band of the Welsh Guards.

RG Jones supplied all of the audio equipment for the tour and specified DPA microphones for the orchestra. A total of 14 DPA 4061 miniature microphones were used to capture the sound of the strings, while the low strings and the brass section were miked using 10 DPA d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones.

Steve Carr, who was the front of house sound engineer, says: “We chose the DPA 4061 omni miniature microphones for the strings because these are a tried and tested method for achieving high quality close miking. The DPA d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones give you all the benefits of the 4061, but with a super cardiod pattern. In the middle of a loud orchestra this is very useful for isolating the sources. Although we close mike the orchestra, we try to also get a rounded, open orchestral sound by blending reverb effects and ambient mics with the close mic sounds.”

RG Jones carries a large stock of DPA Microphones, all of which were supplied by DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network. Carr adds that he was delighted with the results the DPA microphones achieved during the Katherine Jenkins tour.

“I’ve been using DPA microphones for many years now and am always very happy with the sound they deliver,” he says.
