HARMAN’s JBL Professional Loudspeakers Give Sound to the Stars at the 55th Annual GRAMMY® Awards

(Left) Bryan Bradley, Vice President, General Manager of the HARMAN Professional Loudspeaker Business Unit and (right) Mark Ureda, Vice President, Strategy and Technology, HARMAN Professional, in the Television Committee Room at the GRAMMY Awards.

NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN’s JBL loudspeakers were at the heart of Sunday’s 55th Annual GRAMMY® Awards, with JBL VTX line arrays comprising the live sound reinforcement system at the STAPLES Center and an LSR6300 Series 5.1 surround sound studio monitor system used in the Television Committee Room.

The annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, known as Music’s Biggest Night®, is presented by The Recording Academy® to honor outstanding achievements in the production and performance of recorded music. The GRAMMY Awards were broadcast live in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network. More than 28.1 million people watched this year’s Awards telecast, the second-largest audience for the GRAMMY Awards since 1993.

This year’s Awards were hosted by LL Cool J and featured performances by The Black Keys, Mumford & Sons, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, among others. The rock band fun. earned Best New Artist and Song of the Year for “We Are Young,” while Gotye won Record of the Year for “Somebody That I Used to Know,” along with two other GRAMMY Awards. Mumford & Sons earned Album of the Year for Babel.

ATK Audiotek supplied the live sound reinforcement system for the Awards, which featured left-right columns of 12 VTX V25 fullsize line array elements per side for the main PA, with additional left-right columns of 12 V25 per side for out fill, along with a center cluster of 18 VTX S28 arrayable subwoofers in cardioid mode (two arrays of nine S28 subs each), for a total of 66 VTX loudspeakers. Six VRX932 Constant Curvature loudspeakers served as front fill, with left-right rear delay arrays of eight VERTEC® VT4889 fullsize line array elements each. Powering the loudspeakers were 16 Crown Audio VRack 2000 and four VRack 4×3500 and the entire system was configured using JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ software. The house sound system at the STAPLES Center, featuring VERTEC VT4888ADP-DA powered line array elements, was used to supplement the live sound system with five enclosures from the center end array used for rear upper deck and VIP box coverage.

“This year we used the newest evolution of the JBL line array,” said Jeff Peterson of ATK Audiotek. “The V25 had a very clear and smooth high end which didn’t distract our attention. All of the low-end power we’re accustomed to with the VT4889’s was there and then some. The S28 sub is so efficient we never came close to using all of the available power. Tying it all together, Performance Manager gave me all the control and monitoring I needed.”

In the Television Committee Room, Michael Abbott, Audio Director for the GRAMMY Awards, along with Recording Academy executives, relied on JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors to listen to the mix of the show in real time. “We were able to take advantage of the LSR6300 Series’ RMC Room Mode Correction technology to ensure that we were accurately hearing the subtleties in the mix,” Abbott said. “As has been the case for several years, the LSR6300 Series performed flawlessly at the GRAMMY Awards.”

Harris Digital Out-Of-Home Brings New Visual and Business Management Innovations to Digital Signage Expo

DENVER, February 20, 2013Harris Digital Out-Of-Home comes to this year’s Digital Signage Expo (February 27-28, Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth 907) with new innovations to amplify consumer engagement and extend business management reach. The company will demonstrate dynamic video and graphical content generated through its latest InfoCaster™ release. Additionally, new Punctuate™ software tools extend business management beyond single-channel capability.

The new updates, which include creative enhancements for videowall displays and interactive engagement, illustrate the company’s commitment to innovation for the digital signage industry across many verticals, including retail, hospitality, sports and live entertainment.

“Harris Digital Out-Of-Home continues to develop its portfolio, with new features to improve the visual experience for consumers and evolve the business model for out-of-home networks,” said Denise MacDonell, director and general manager, Harris Digital Out-Of-Home. “The Digital Signage Expo remains the industry’s greatest event to build relationships and demonstrate innovations. We intend to do this and more.”

MacDonell adds that the company will offer two presentations in workshop sessions over the course of the show. Information on the Harris Digital Out-Of-Home presentations is available at http://blog.harris.com/join-harris-digital-out-of-home-at-dse-2013/, and a complete list is at http://www.digitalsignageexpo.net/schedule.

Visual Enhancements
InfoCaster is among the preeminent digital signage solutions, with a full suite of hardware and software products to create, schedule, distribute and play out content – including HD-quality video and immaculate graphics.

The latest release incorporates HTML5 and Flash support for dynamic web content, including specific screen regions and full-screen presentations. This enables more sophisticated content management at the network level, as well as rich interactive experiences from wayfinding to retail purchases for consumers. The latter, made possible through InfoCaster software, makes touchscreen-powered shopping part of the complete in-store media experience for retailers and other businesses.

“This is especially useful in building an omni-channel strategy that brings the in-store and on-screen experience together for retail customers, and ensures that all channels of communication to the consumer are consistent,” said MacDonell.

InfoCaster has been traditionally strong for videowall presentations, perfectly synchronizing content together as one seamless canvas. The InfoCaster process removes videowall processors and other components from the mix, without limiting the number of supported displays in large videowall configurations.

At Digital Signage Expo, the company will introduce support for perfectly synchronized real-time data feeds, such as news, weather and stock information. The crawls will similarly stretch across videowalls as part of a large canvas, perfectly in sync to ensure all data on display is accurate and up to date. Harris Digital Out-Of-Home will also demonstrate support for non-grid videowalls to enable various screen orientations.

“A traditional videowall limitation has been the assumption that all monitors must be in the portrait or landscape orientation to produce engaging content,” said MacDonell. “InfoCaster allows our customers to create far more interesting videowall layouts based on its ability to synchronize content across different display shapes and sizes.”

Business Management
Punctuate manages the scheduling and placement of advertising and promotional content for out-of-home networks, bringing together automatic content placement and accurate business management. New management tools allow Punctuate users to manage more than one channel or network from the same interface. This enables two or more operators to see different aspects of a network while sharing common components and information.

“One example is a network operator managing an audio network and a video network for the same business,” said MacDonell. “They might have the same advertisers and the same playout locations, but different content. Punctuate simplifies matters by sharing the same IT infrastructure and other components to streamline overall business management.”

About Harris Broadcast

The company’s tools and technologies fit seamlessly into any media operation, enabling customers to easily and profitably create compelling content for delivery over multiple distribution platforms. Clay Paky Supports Super Bowl Concert Series on VH-1 and CMT

Super Bowl XLVII was a memorable game, but the full Super Bowl experience started well before kickoff with a pair of live pre-game concerts broadcast on VH-1 and CMT where Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800s and grandMA2 light consoles played key roles.

VH-1 and the NFL joined forces to celebrate the Super Bowl with Train headlining “The Best Super Bowl Concert Ever” on Friday night. CMT and the NFL partnered the following evening on a “Crossroads” special starring superstar country band Rascal Flatts and iconic rock band Journey. Both concerts were held at The Sugar Mill in New Orleans, which seats 4,000-5,000 fans.

Atomic Lighting of Lititz, Pennsylvania provided 40 Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800s and a pair of grandMA2 light systems with wings for the concert series. PEDG was the production design team collaborating. Bob Pederson was acting lighting designer on the broadcast truck.

“Atomic had suggested using the QWOs. I hadn’t used them before, but Spike [Doug Brant] had just done a shootout and loved them so he was onboard with them,” says Nathan Wilson, an associate designer with PEDG who served as project manager/production designer for the concerts along with Lloyd.

Once Wilson saw the QWO 800s in action he was enthusiastic, too. “I saw them and liked them,” he recalls. “They became my main hard-edged fixture positioned all over the place – out in the crowd, up front, on the floor, as key light for the presenter. Most of the rig was QWOs.”

Clay Paky’s Alpha Spot QWO 800 uses the latest MSR Platinum lamp, an 800W light source that produces an intense sparkling light – brighter even than older 1200W lamps. The Alpha Spot QWO 800 is equipped with optical features placing it at the top of its class, including a very wide zoom range from 7.6º to 55º, a uniform beam distribution at all zoom angles and a unique Stay-Sharp-Zoom feature that locks images in focus while zooming. The fixture is small, lightweight, silent and has low power consumption making it an excellent tool for TV, theater, corporate events and many other demanding lighting applications.

Wilson gives kudos to the fixture’s range of effects, brightness and great-looking beams for keying. “I was very impressed. It was a real workhorse and performed great,” he reports.

The grandMA2 lights were selected by programmers Kevin Lawson and Tyler Roach. “I’ve always liked MA products, but I’ve been designing more lately and programming less,” says Wilson. “Kevin raved about the grandMA2 light, and it’s PEDG’s desk of choice for all the programmers we work with.”

A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive North American distributor for Clay Paky.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “We’re proud to have our lights involved in these high profile events and pleased that so many designers have specified them.”
