RFvenue AND CUSTOM AUDIO MAKE PRO BOWL

HONOLULU, HAWAII – FEBRUARY 2013: Managing wireless audio systems at football games is notoriously challenging. There are critical coach communication channels, referee mics, and ENG sideline systems that crowd out a lot of useable RF spectrum. Hawaii-based Custom Audio, Inc. has been working the NFL Pro Bowl for many years and specializes in production sound, corporate video, as well as installation projects for commercial, educational, and government clients. For this year’s Pro Bowl, Custom Audio turned to RFvenue’s Diversity Fin remote antenna for rock-solid signal reception from their stage mics throughout the halftime show – even in adverse RF conditions.

“We were given 700kHz spacing between frequencies from the NFL game day coordinators,” said Custom Audio’s Jeff Kang. “So we were worried about intermodulation issues, but we also had to deal with a 24-foot wide LED video wall located directly next to the antenna position. RF emission from the wall was definitely a huge concern on our primary vocal mic.”

Custom Audio used a Shure UHF-R wireless mic system, with a U4R-D dual receiver and UR-2 handheld transmitter set at 10mW. The two antenna connections on the Diversity Fin provided polarization diversity performance from a single antenna mount position. The unique design of the Diversity Fin reduces the chance of a dropout due to cross linear polarization fades when wireless mics are moving around or where multi-path nulls are encountered indoors. It also prevents diversity microphone receivers from constantly switching RF input channels, which can create noise.

“We had dropout and noise issues on some other active paddle antennas we used on our wireless microphones, but there were no dropouts or noise on the Diversity Fin- and it got great coverage even when the transmitter wasn’t on the stage,” noted Kang.

RFvenue’s Chris Regan commented, “signal dropouts are routinely the number one complaint among wireless system managers and end users alike. We are pleased to see the Diversity Fin improving quality of signal on any brand wireless mic for live and installed systems.”

ABOUT RFVENUE RFvenue manufactures hardware wireless system accessories including remote antennas, RF distribution equipment, and cable assemblies. NEP Supershooters Preparing for 13th Season as Mobile Broadcast Service Provider for NASCAR Productions

NEP Supershooters Provides Extensive Fiber Optic Infrastructure as Well as Comprehensive Mobile Production Facilities for Highly Complex Broadcasts

PITTSBURGH — Feb. 12, 2013 — With the approach of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 24, which serves as the official opening of the NASCAR racing season, NEP Supershooters is gearing up for its 13th year as mobile broadcasting provider for NASCAR Productions. In addition to providing the industry’s most innovative HD mobile production capabilities, NEP Supershooters has applied its expertise in fiber optics to design and build the fiber infrastructure for each NASCAR venue, including huge racetracks that require more than 150,000 feet of fiber.

“We value our ongoing relationship with NASCAR, and we’re honored to be able to provide technical management, engineering, and facilities for one of the most complex sports broadcasts in the U.S.,” said NEP CEO Kevin Rabbitt. “NASCAR Productions trusts us to work with its rights holders and other vendors to deliver a flawless show every week, and our 12-year track record is a testament to the engineering excellence, innovation, and expertise that we bring to every race.”

Over the years, NEP’s technical expertise and depth of resources have uniquely positioned the company to handle NASCAR events of enormous complexity. The Daytona 500, for instance, is the biggest race of the year, comparable to the Super Bowl in production complexity. Since the Daytona 500 comes at the beginning of the season, NEP Supershooters is required to have a large-scale, highly reliable and well-tested system in place at the outset.

During the 2012 season, NASCAR Productions deployed NEP Supershooters’ SS29 mobile HD A and B units to produce all 38 events in NASCAR’s premier Sprint Cup Series. These units produced the full range of NASCAR Productions’ tier 2 programming, including a two-hour pre-race show featuring in-depth coverage of drivers and cars and four roving announcers located throughout the race track produced in partnership with SPEED. In addition, NEP Supershooters’ NCP11 and ST1 units produced all 22 races for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2012 for live broadcast on SPEED. NEP Supershooters has also provided several other large sports broadcasters with customized mobile production vehicles for their own coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series, with NASCAR Productions providing logistics and infrastructure support.

In addition, NEP Supershooters provided its SRT mobile unit at all NASCAR premier series venues, acting as a shared resources truck that provided camera feeds and signal distribution for all rights holders. Via the fiber network designed and built by NEP, SRT distributed feeds from nearly 100 robotic, in-car, roof, stage, and studio cameras for the Daytona 500, with data and audio feeds from up to 70 cameras for other NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. By integrating multiple production facilities for all networks, SRT served as the hub for the entire NASCAR Sprint Cup Series broadcasting compound. The custom designed “condo” unit ST37 provided production space for several other smaller productions and video services. From ST37, NASCAR Productions also produced international NASCAR ancillary programs distributed to 125 countries outside the U.S., in addition to Sprint Vision and FanVision content.

Factor TC’s HARMAN Professional Solution for Bulgarian Amphitheater

NORTHRIDGE, California – Situated close to the Bulgarian seaside town of Varna on the Black Sea coast, a new 2,000-seat amphitheater has opened in the Kamchia Resort, with the ocean providing a stunning backdrop. Spanning a total area of 3,105 square meters, the classic design has been treated to a first-class technical infrastructure, with installation company Factor TC specifying a HARMAN’s JBL VRX/SRX sound reinforcement system—part of a complete HARMAN Professional deployment—as well as designing and installing the lighting.

Factor TC were recommended to the project and the design was overseen by Vesselin Todorov, president of the Sofia based company, along with Ing. Michael Michaelov from the Factor TC office in Varna.

Clusters of eight JBL VRX928LA (four each side) Constant Curvature loudspeakers and 16 SRX722 loudspeakers, underpinned by six ground-stacked SRX728S subwoofers, provide balanced arena coverage for a range of performances—from full-on rock concerts to spoken word—with an LED light and water fountain show also presented in front of the stage. Meanwhile, six JBL EON515XT active loudspeakers, serving as floor monitors, provide performers with their reference sound. All speakers are weatherized and water resistant to withstand the rigors of operating outside.

The passive elements of the system are powered by a combination of three Crown XTi 6002 and 10 XTi 4002 amplifiers. System management is under the command of a dbx DriveRack 260, which provides full bandpass and crossover configurations as well as independent output processing, augmented by a pair of dbx 166 compressor/gates, dbx 2231 dual 31-band graphic equalizer and Lexicon MX400 4-in/4-out reverb/FC processor.

The front-of-house sound engineer has been equipped with a Soundcraft GB8/32. This 32-channel desk was chosen for its versatility, since its dual-mode topology allows it to be used both for FOH and monitor duties.

Both the lighting and loudspeaker systems are assembled on a dismountable mobile aluminum structure and control is handled from a dedicated control room connected to the stage.

While the classic amphitheater has been designed from the ground up the remainder of the resort is undergoing complete refurbishment by owners, the government of Moscow. Project management was handled by PMC, ing. Ludmil Angelov was the construction company and Viktor Buzov the architect. SOC Kamchia are the main investors.

The result is a first-class construction, with the surrounding landscaping and planting complementing the natural environment of the facility.

HARMAN (www.HARMAN.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets — supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon® and Mark Levinson®. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems. HARMAN has a workforce of about 13,400 people across the Americas, Europe and Asia, and reported net sales of $4.4 billion for the twelve months ending June 30, 2012.

Event Safety Takes On New Urgency For Attendees Of Event Live Expo 2013

Municipalities hosting large-scale indoor and outdoor live events have often required event organizers to prepare comprehensive Event Safety Plans that include specific engineering drawings that address the riggings of stages and roof structures, high wind action plans and comprehensive insurance policies. Those plan may now also be required by insurance providers before approving coverage, according to a prediction made last week at Event Live Expo 2013 by Scott Carroll, Executive Vice President and Program Director of Take1 Entertainment Insurance.

At a heavily attended seminar entitled “Insurance for Major Events: What You Need To Know,” Carroll warned live event producers and organizers to get ready for a new era of greater municipal oversight and new requirements. “Municipalities do not want to be in the news for hosting a live event that goes terribly wrong because of accident, tragedy, or weather and they are putting a greater onus of responsibility on the shoulders of event producers and, in turn, their insurance providers to show that they are ready for almost any contingency,” Carroll said.

Exactly how much more involved and complicated will it get, Carroll asked the audience? “It’s quite possible insurance companies will now begin to look for engineering reports, particularly for events taking place out of doors. They may want to see specifics that address the riggings of stages and roof structures, as well as an action plan in the event of high winds. They may also want to see operations plans, management plans and structural engineering reports.”

The bottom line, according to Carroll? “Gone are the days when the insurance sections of venue contracts are glossed over and rarely enforced. We are entering a new age of intense oversight and greater requirements.”

As a result of both, Carroll predicted, insurance capacity in larger limits is going to become increasingly difficult to obtain from one or even two carriers. “Now it is going to require several carriers to provide limits of $20-million or more. This is the new reality facing the entire entertainment industry in general and the live event industry in particular.”

Carroll urged seminar attendees to take a close hard look at their current insurance coverage and the insurance companies providing those coverages. “It doesn’t hurt to discuss with your insurance providers the kind of claims that can arise from the recent spate of tragedies in South Africa (Linkin Park concert scaffolding collapse), Canada (Radiohead concert stage collapse), Brazil (Santa Maria nightclub fire), and the United States (Indiana State Fair Sugarland stage collapse). These discussions may help you to better understand how they might react and respond on your behalf if tragedy strikes and possibly point out gaps that may exist within your current insurance program. After all, it’s always easier to discuss potential claims with insurance carriers before they actually happen.”

Yamaha CL Premium Rack and Familiarity Key Factors For Youth Event

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Held in late January 2013 at the Pheasant Run Convention Center in St. Charles, Illinois, Willow Creek Community Church hosted Blast 13 a youth group retreat for approximately 1,400, produced by the Willow Creek Student Impact Ministry, with audio support provided by TC Furlong (Chicago).

One Yamaha CL5 digital audio console accompanied by two Rio3224-D input/output racks were used at front of house with a CL1 selected for monitor mixing along with two ProPlex Gigabit switches for network redundancy. “Network redundancy was important because of the high-profile nature of the event,” states Chris Wintz, Rental Manager, TC Furlong. “The crew at Willow Creek likes to have backup/redundant systems whenever possible.”

”Since the CL5 was already specified as the front of house console after the Willow Creek team attended a demo, and challenged with keeping the monitor mix area to a small footprint yet needing a system with ample mix buses, the CL1 was a one-stop solution,” says Wintz. “In the 13 years with have collaborated with the Willow Creek team, this was one of the most streamlined solutions we’ve put together.”

“We decided on the CL system for a number of reasons,” states Nathan Miller, Systems Designer/Engineer, Miller Audio Services (Chicago), audio contractor for the event (assisted by systems engineer Matt Satorius). “One factor was the ability to use the Premium Rack Portico plug-ins. We used the Portico 5033 EQ and 5043 Compression on the lead vocals at both front of house and monitors. We also used the U-76 plug-in at front of house across the drum bus as well as the Opt-2A plug-in to add a mastered sound to the IEM mix busses at monitors. The other major factor was the overall efficiency of the setup and strike. Switching to a digital snake really helped make the overall load in/load out easier. Not only were the FOH/MON runs much cleaner, but the split was much cleaner and easier to troubleshoot.”

Miller said the CL5s were easy to operate by event engineers Stephen Kendeigh and Ryan Pribyl due to console familiarity since the pair use Yamaha consoles for regular youth services. “Blast 2013 represented a major step forward not only in our audio system architecture, but in the overall sound quality of the event,” states Troy Bartholomew, Technical Director for the ministry who oversaw all of the production for the event. “Nathan’s choice of the CL Series streamlined our setup while giving us more features and flexibility than we have had in past events. Also, Ryan and Stephen’s ability to utilize the fantastic new features really elevated the audio experience for all of our students. Throughout the weekend, I received a lot of positive feedback from industry veterans, audio contractors, and Willow production staff who were able to come in and listen to the system.”

One of the largest churches in the U.S. with an attendance of 20,000 on any given weekend, Willow Creek regularly host retreats for youth and adults for their congregation. This particular event featured guest presenters along with a church house band of seven musicians and vocalists. For more information on Willow Creek, visit www.willowcreek.org.
