Boston Red Sox Catcher Jarrod ‘Salty’ Saltalamacchia Upgrades His Home Entertainment To The Big Leagues With ELAN® g!

The Boston Red Sox’ starting catcher, Jarrod ‘Salty’ Saltalamacchia, has been playing baseball his whole life, and now plays with some of the best athletes in the world. At his West Palm Beach, Florida home, his family loves listening to music and watching TV and movies, so now he’s upgraded his home’s AV system to the major leagues with the incredibly easy-to-use, high fidelity ELAN® g! Entertainment and Control System. What’s more, after just a few weeks using the g! System, Saltalamacchia was ready for the full ELAN g! treatment and expanded the system to integrate control of the home’s lighting, heating and cooling, security and surveillance.

“Living with the ELAN g! System is almost like living in a different house,” Saltalamacchia said. “It’s such a better experience than using the Bose system I was used to. Not only is the sound clearer, louder, and distributed all over the house, but all my music and movies are automatically connected to the system so there’s no need to plug in my iPad. I also love using the g! iPad app to control the TVs, especially in the game room, where it’s easy to use three side-by-side TVs that are clearly labeled TV one, two and three on the g! screen. If I ever move to a new home there’s a good chance that getting an ELAN g! System will be one of the first items on my to-do list.”

Dave Febbraio of Connecticut-based Structured Home Solutions integrated nine audio zones, eight video zones, 22 security zones, 12 Lutron lighting zones and several surveillance cameras into Saltalamacchia’s g! System, filling the entire house — indoors and outdoors — with the latest in AV and control technologies.

“Like a lot of homeowners, Jarrod had never used a whole-home AV system before,” Febbraio said. “The beauty of the ELAN g! System is it’s easy enough for new users to dive right in, but also powerful enough for them to set their own schedules for lighting, heating, security, irrigation and more. It’s also very expandable, which obviously helped in this case when Jarrod wanted to add in his lighting, HVAC, security and surveillance systems. I recommend ELAN g! for all types of clients, from those building a single room AV system to homeowners who want whole-home automation. It’s very robust and compatible with a ton of popular third-party systems, while allowing users to add more zones and more subsystems as they desire.”

Inside the home, 14 Niles in-ceiling speakers provide audiophile sound in nearly every room, while nine Samsung LED TVs ranging from 26” to 55” and a Sharp 70” LED TV offer the family an endless selection of TV and videos from 12 DirecTV receivers and a 2 terabyte NAS drive. A Logitech Squeezebox adds Pandora and Rhapsody streaming services to the mix, which also includes AM/FM, Sirius|XM® Satellite Radio, iPods, iPads and the family’s iTunes library. When they venture outdoors, the family never misses a beat thanks to the well-appointed poolside patio that features six Niles outdoor speakers and three LG LCD TVs. In addition to the iPads with the g!Mobile app, several rooms and the patio have their own ELAN HR2 remotes that make choosing the family’s favorite music and videos a breeze while offering the reliability and familiarity of a traditional TV remote control.

“The system is so easy to use that my 6-year-old daughter jumped right in and started using my iPad to control the TV without any help,” Saltalamacchia added. “For my wife and me, one of the best features is the remote access, since we spend a lot of time in Boston. Now we can check in on the security system and look through the surveillance cameras, and even set a lighting schedule so the house isn’t dark when we’re away. It’s comforting to know that we can always look in on the house and even make it seem like people are home when we want to. And I can’t say enough good things about Dave Febbraio. I had him come down to Florida from Connecticut because I’ve dealt with all kinds of electricians and contractors, and Dave exceeded my expectations at every turn. He always responds to my calls and texts right away and all the work he did was exactly how we had discussed and was done in a very clean, professional manner.”

The home’s ELAN g! System comprises ELAN’s HC6 Controller, an ELAN V85 video switcher, an ELAN S1616A, five ELAN HR2 Remotes, an ELAN TS7 in-wall touch screen, an ELK security system, Lutron RadioRa2 lighting, two Aviosys IP video servers and a Panamax BlueBolt surge protector and battery backup.

Besides having the longest last name in the history of Major League Baseball, Jarrod Saltalamacchia has made a name for himself since his major league debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2007. Over his 474-game career, which includes playing with the Texas Rangers and his current position as starting catcher for the Boston Red Sox, the 27-year-old switch-hitter has earned an impressive 376 hits, 64 home runs, 210 RBIs and a batting average of .239.

StrandVision Digital Signage Enhances Customer-Facing Front-of-House Capabilities with Events Scheduling Displays

Free digital signage software reader board feature directly imports schedules from proprietary and commercial events management and sales software…

MENOMONIE, Wis. – Feb. 26, 2013 – StrandVision Digital Signage today announced the ability to incorporate events scheduling information directly into its digital signage software. The new feature works with most events management software products including Delphi and can be customized to support proprietary and in-house developed meeting and event scheduling and sales systems.

The events scheduling integration is attractive to hotels and convention centers, restaurants and function halls, and even houses of worship and schools. It was initially developed for the proprietary sales application for one of the top ten global hotel chains. As part of the implementation process, StrandVision worked directly with the customer’s IT staff to develop and to receive certification for the interface that the digital signage cloud servers use to access the information in real time.

The StrandVision events scheduling digital signage software is easy to use. Once the interface is developed, StrandVision subscribers simply select the reader board capability on the StrandVision Content Management System (CMS) dashboard to have the events information displayed on their digital media players in a variety of formats showing all events for the day or only those that occur in the future or are currently in session.

The scheduling information can be added to other promotional or informational digital signage content mixes or drive room-specific displays. With the split-screen capability of the Streaming Video package, events can be displayed at all times while other business marketing material appears in other regions of the digital signage player screens. The StrandVision interface cuts down on administrative time required to post meeting information on multiple systems and also increases accuracy and timeliness.

“StrandVision Digital Signage can import room and events schedules from most events management software packages,” said Mike Strand, StrandVision founder and CEO. “We have global customers that are using the capability for both back-of-house employee communication and front-of-house customer-facing business marketing and room notices.”

Electrosonic Upgrades Video Wall at Caltrans District 7 Traffic Facility

When Caltrans District 7 began the first phase of a multi-phase AV system upgrade at its Los Angeles facility, it contracted with Electrosonic to create a brighter, more reliable video wall for traffic monitoring that takes advantage of the latest in projection technology.

“Caltrans District 7 has more than 400 cameras on the highways of Los Angeles and Ventura counties,” says Electrosonic project manager Guy Fronte. “They can review camera feeds 24/7 in the facility and when there’s a traffic event – road damage or an accident – they can magnify that feed on the videowall. The videowall is integral to 24-hour traffic management.”

The existing videowall comprises a 12-screen center unit in a 4×3 configuration flanked by a pair of 6-screen 3×2 units. The giant wall features 80-inch diagonal screens in the center and 52-inch screens on the sides.

The standard format of the wall has single-camera feeds on the side screens and 2×2 graphic traffic patterns on the center screen with single-camera feeds surrounding them. “They monitor heavy traffic volume locations and can bring any one of those feeds up on the larger central display as needed,” Fronte explains.

The wear and tear of more than five years of constant operation had taken their toll on the existing rear-projection engines and begun to degrade the facility’s ability to monitor traffic, so Electrosonic replaced the videowall engines with Christie one-chip SXGA displays to take advantage of improved projector quality. Christie RPMSP-D132U displays were selected for the center screen and RPMX-D132U displays for the side screens.

The side projectors were installed in existing cabinets behind the videowall; the center projectors were placed in a huge metal framework previously built by Electrosonic. “Caltrans District 7 has the most spacious rear-projection room I’ve ever worked in,” says Fronte. “It’s very well thought out, so replacing the engines was quite simple.”

The primary challenge for the installation was working in conjunction with the 24/7 hours of the facility. “We couldn’t take down the wall during rush hours, so we swapped out one projector at a time to allow for continuous operation,” Fronte notes.

Videowall control is achieved using a Quantum processor previously installed by Electrosonic. The Crestron touchscreen control system that operates the wall, turns the system on and off and monitors lamp life, was modified to accommodate the new projector engines.

Electrosonic also furnished 48 spare lamps and is providing an extensive two-year service contract, which includes complete parts and labor, unlimited telephone support, proactive preventive maintenance visits and eight-hour response time on weekdays.

“The Caltrans people were so pleasant to work with,” recalls Fronte. “We have a great working relationship in bringing them the best videowall we can!”

The DUAL RPA 500 mic pre is a two-channel solid state/tube hybrid preamp. The solid-state front end provides a fast transient response while the tube back end provides warmth and punch. The DUAL RPA 500 also has the Aphex patented Mic Limiter technology for “no second take” recording.

The new COMP 500 module is an optical compressor. It features an electronically balanced input and uses a Jensen JT-11DL nickel output balancing transformer. The optocoupler was specified to be as fast as possible and, is produced exclusively for Aphex. The module features stereo linking, and provides all the transparency of an optical compressor with the flexibility to get aggressive compression when needed.

The EX•BB 500 is a mono, 500 Series module version of the popular Aphex Aural Exciter and Optical Big Bottom processors. Each processor has a dedicated, lighted enable button.

Bose® RoomMatch® Sound System Chosen for University of Rhode Island’s Edwards Auditorium

A range of Bose RoomMatch® modules, powered by Bose PowerMatch® PM8500 power amplifiers, provide URI’s Edwards Auditorium with a flexible, clear-sounding audio reinforcement solution

The historic 920-seat Edwards Hall Auditorium on University of Rhode Island’s Kingston Campus recently upgraded its sound system with a selection of products from Bose® Professional Systems Division. The system was spec’d and installed by Sudbury, Massachusetts-based Adtech Systems. Adtech’s Senior Design Engineer Charlie Crane served as Lead on the project. The final system consists of two L/R clusters consisting of two RoomMatch® RM12060, two RM9020, two RM7010 array modules, and two RMS215 subwoofers, all powered by four PowerMatch® PM8500 configurable professional power amplifiers.

Crane points out the unique challenges of tackling the project in such a space: “The room was originally built as a library and converted into an auditorium much later, so they’ve always struggled with good sound quality in there. The university’s architect was working with administration, and they were primarily concerned with the room’s acoustics. But more accurately, they simply had a problem of coverage – the existing system was not covering every seat. They wanted a new system that would not only cover the room and increase speech intelligibility for lectures, demonstrations and other different things that you would expect in a large auditorium at a college, but they also wanted it to be able to accommodate high-energy music. With these concerns of coverage and versatility of use in mind, it was not hard for us to decide on a Bose RoomMatch system.”

The coverage patterns available with RoomMatch loudspeakers makes designing a new system completely customizable to the space. Crane continues: “The room has a very deep balcony with seating underneath, but with the progressive nature of the RoomMatch arrays, we could throw sound deep into the balcony without blowing the people out of their seats right in the front of the room. We chose the cabinets with the right coverage patterns – a combination of 120×60, 90×20, and 70×10 degrees – and we ended up with a great front-to-back coverage ratio. The client is more than thrilled – they now love the room. RoomMatch offers incredible sound quality and pattern control… Just awesome.”
