Nexidia Introduces Nexidia QC, a Tool for Automated Caption, Video Description, and Language Verification

Nexidia QC Automates Manual Processes to Reduce Expenses, Help Avoid Fines, and Improve Quality of Viewing Experience

ATLANTA — March 12, 2013 — Nexidia, developer of dialogue and audio analysis products and technologies for optimizing audio and video media, today announced Nexidia QC(TM), a software tool for automated closed caption and video description verification, closed caption alignment, and language identification for broadcast and IP workflows. Nexidia QC overcomes the challenge of ensuring content is being created, edited, and distributed in the right languages with the correct captions at the right times. It automates manual processes, thus reducing operating expenses, and automatically identifies errors to avoid fines and improve quality for viewers.

“The digital assets broadcasters work with are becoming more and more complex, especially on an international level, where an asset might have mezzanine files for 20 different languages,” said Drew Lanham, senior vice president and general manager of Nexidia’s Media and Entertainment division. “Language and caption quality impacts the entire delivery chain. There have been many quality control products available for video analysis, audio quality, loudness, and more, but nothing for language and caption verification until now.”

Nexidia QC verifies quality automatically at every point in the life of the asset to ensure that the right caption file appears against the right media in the right language, and that it is properly timed from ingest to playout and beyond.

In order to verify the video description, Nexidia QC analyzes the program audio and the secondary audio program (SAP). The software compares the program audio tracks against one another, identifying all segments in which the audio is not identical and returning a video description coverage score. It also identifies the primary spoken language of the program audio and the SAP.

To check for closed caption compliance, Nexidia QC starts by identifying the primary spoken language of the program audio and the caption text. If the languages match, the application verifies that the caption text matches the program audio and whether the caption timing is correct. Nexidia QC determines the level of caption coverage for the program based on the difference between the segments with accurate caption information and the voice activity, and returns the closed caption coverage score.

In addition to checking closed caption accuracy, Nexidia QC can repair misaligned caption files. Nexidia QC compares the time codes of the words spoken in the audio track to the time codes in the caption file. Adjustments are made to the time codes in the caption file so that the captions are aligned with the spoken words, returning a new caption file ready for distribution.

Nexidia QC will be demonstrated at the 2013 NAB Show in booth S117LMR. More information about Nexidia QC and other Nexidia products is available at www.nexidia.tv.

SMPTE and Stanford Center for Image Systems Engineering to Coproduce ‘Entertainment Technology in the Internet Age’ Conference

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — March 12, 2013 — The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the worldwide leader in motion-imaging standards and education for the communications, media, entertainment, and technology industries, today announced that it is working with the Stanford Center for Image Systems Engineering (SCIEN) to produce the two-day conference “Entertainment Technology in the Internet Age” (ETIA). Beginning June 18 at Stanford University’s Palo Alto, Calif., campus, the conference will explore the technology, creative, and business requirements for delivering a compelling, high-quality, monetizable entertainment experience over the Web.

“Entertainment technology development and content deployment has historically been the purview of Hollywood and traditional broadcast media,” said ETIA conference chair Patrick Griffis, executive director of technology strategy at Dolby Laboratories and SMPTE education vice president. “However, the rapid convergence of technology; improvements in connectivity, bandwidth, and media processing; coupled with consumer interest, is causing a surge in entertainment distribution via the Internet.”

“ETIA will bring together leaders and innovators from Hollywood and Silicon Valley communities to discuss how the Internet is changing the way we create, deliver, enjoy, and pay for entertainment,” added Joyce Farrell, executive director of SCIEN and ETIA conference chair.

Through a series of panel discussions and presentations, with ample opportunity for audience participation, the ETIA conference will examine topics within the areas of Internet-focused content creation, distribution, and monetization, as well as technical tools and solutions for shaping the user experience. Among the presentations planned is “Flash Forward — How HTML-5 and Canvas Will Become the Next Interactive Screen for Web Media,” a panel discussion by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and media technology experts on the future of UI technology, as well as several sessions examining the standards and formats — SMPTE Interoperable Master Format (IMF), HLS, and MPEG-DASH — being used to facilitate content distribution and optimization of content quality.

“Where Are the Eyeballs?” will look at consumers’ shift from subscription pay services to Web services, and a subsequent session will examine the role of new analytics technology in illuminating consumer behavior. Related sessions will examine techniques for incorporating advertising into Internet content and delve into how second screens, such as PCs and tablets, are being used to complement the main-screen viewing experience.

As Internet distribution becomes more ubiquitous, many of the regulatory requirements that traditional content providers have incorporated, such as closed captioning, will be a reality for Internet distributed content as well. The regulatory environment in Washington, D.C., will also be discussed along with the solutions that have been given safe harbor status by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The highly charged topic of commercial content protection will also be addressed from the political, business, and technical challenges perspective.

Held in the CEMEX auditorium in the Knight Management Center in Stanford Graduate School of Business, the ETIA will give delegates ample time to engage with speakers and one another as they discuss topics of the day with a common interest in entertainment technology.

Discounted early-bird rates apply to those registering by April 1. Further information about the ETIA conference, including a full schedule and registration information, is available online at www.smpte.org/ETIA2013.

Sonnet Announces 10-Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express Network Adapter Cards

One-Port and Two-Port PCIe(R) Network Adapter Cards are OS X(R)-, Windows(R)-, and Thunderbolt(TM)-Compatible

IRVINE, Calif. — March 7, 2013 — Sonnet Technologies today announced the launch of its Presto(TM) 10GbE 1-Port and Presto 10GbE Server 2-Port 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) PCIe cards. These Sonnet adapter cards enable users to connect their computers and servers to high-speed infrastructure and storage systems using the 10GbE standard, which offers up to 10 times the performance of Gigabit Ethernet, the common wired network connection included with most computers today.

Data centers are adopting the 10GbE standard increasingly for wired networking and specialized applications such as HD video editing using high-performance shared storage systems, yet few Windows(R) PCs and no Mac(R) computers offer this interface option. Sonnet’s Presto 10GbE 1-Port and Presto 10GbE Server 2-Port 10GbE PCIe cards are perfect for high-performance computing for which low latency, high bandwidth, and low CPU overhead are required. Their increased throughput performance and low-host CPU utilization are achieved with stateless offloads, allowing the user’s computer to perform better while large files transfers or high-I/O operations take place.

Both Presto 10GbE network adapters are low-profile x8 PCIe adapter cards that install easily into the PCIe slot of a computer or Thunderbolt(TM)-to-PCIe expansion chassis. Both cards connect to a switch or other 10GbE interface via fiber-optic or copper cable (sold separately). Sonnet offers either short-range (up to 300 meters) or long-range (up to 10 kilometers) SFP+ transceivers for the Presto 10GbE cards, as well as the ability to use cost-effective direct-attach copper (up to 7 meters). Both cards are easily configured using either the OS X(R) Network control panel or the Windows Device Manager, and are optimized for use over Thunderbolt.

The Presto 10GbE 1-Port card is suited for most applications, providing greatly enhanced performance for a wide variety of applications. The Presto 10GbE Server 2-Port card is suited for use in servers and in applications where redundancy is critical, supporting transparent failover to keep the user’s computer connected in case a single cable is disconnected or one of the ports fails. When used with a Mac computer, it also supports link aggregation.

“The Sonnet Presto 10GbE PCIe cards are a natural addition to our high-performance lineup of PCIe cards that are priced very competitively,” said Robert Farnsworth, CEO of Sonnet Technologies. “These new Sonnet products provide users with two additional solutions that are simply powerful.”

The Presto 10GbE 1-Port (part number G10E-SFP-E) and Presto 10GbE Server 2-Port (part number G10E-SFP-2X-E2) cards, and the 10GBase-SR SFP+ (part number G10E-SFP-SR) and 10Base-LR SFP+ (part number G10E-SFP-LR) transceivers are available now. More information on these products and pricing is available at www.sonnettech.com/product/computercards/index.html.
