Bexel Contributes Broadcast Solutions and Expertise to Zuckerberg Media;

New Silicon Valley Studio Puts Foothold on Content Creation Outside of Hollywood

(BURBANK, CA) Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group‘s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, collaborated with Zuckerberg Media on the launch of its new 12,000-square-foot production studio in Menlo Park, Calif., which recently began broadcasting original content, both live and streaming.

Zuckerberg Media, founded by CEO Randi Zuckerberg, brought Bexel onboard in the early planning stages to help design and outfit a state-of-the-art media production facility capable of broadcasting live around the world on television and the internet. After identifying the full range of needs for Zuckerberg Media, Bexel constructed plans and made recommendations on the best equipment selections.

“Bexel is at the top of the broadcast solutions game and came highly recommended to Zuckerberg Media,” said Bradley Lautenbach, chief operating officer of Zuckerberg Media. “Bexel was able to work within our very aggressive startup timeline to deliver infrastructure that produces wonderful output-and we are delighted that they will be a partner to Zuckerberg Media as we continue to grow.”

Bexel worked from the ground up with the general contractor and architect to assist in meeting codes, all with an eye on future scalability. Bexel was able to create smart solutions to help Zuckerberg Media achieve their goals for the new studio, which included production solutions “to conquer the world with content.”

“Zuckerberg Media is an innovative, tech-driven entertainment company run by revolutionary thinkers,” notes Bexel President and General Manager Halid Hatic. “It is an incredible opportunity for Bexel to support the vision of Randi and her team with pragmatic tools as well as a strategy for the future. We are enthusiastic fans of what Zuckerberg Media is creating, and we are excited to see what the ‘next generation of media’ brings.”

Approximately 90% of the operational equipment found at Zuckerberg Media was purchased from Bexel. New assets were combined with post-Olympics (2012) gear to design a solution that was customized to the studio’s unique needs and stayed within budget. Top-of-the-line equipment integrated into the studio included products from AJA, ASG Custom Audio Products, Blackmagic Design, Evertz, Sachtler, Sennheiser, TBC, Panasonic, LG and NewTek. Bexel outfitted the production facility with Sony EX3 Cameras, modified with monitors, teleprompters, and a proprietary data transfer system to ensure maximum flexibility and functionality. TSL Audio Monitoring was installed, and studio lights include the new Litepanels Sola 6 and Sola 4 LED Fresnels.

“From the very beginning, this was an honestly collaborative effort with the team at Zuckerberg Media,” said John Root, Western region product sales manager, Bexel TSS. “From the integration of audio and video systems to helping them locate a talented lighting designer, from control room design to engaging in full testing and training, we supported their creation of a world-class facility. It was an intriguing assignment to help launch an environment where the future will unfold.”

Ten Years After Audio Ensures Every Voice is Heard with HARMAN’s JBL VTX Line Arrays and Crown VRack Amplification Systems

BANGKOK, Thailand – Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand recently drew a huge turnout of fans for Coca-Cola Thailand’s “Real Voice, Real Talent” concert, featuring performances from all 59 contenders of The Voice Thailand television series. For the event, Ten Years After Audio (TYAA) deployed its new HARMAN JBL VTX line array system and Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers.

The “Real Voice, Real Talent” concert featured a large, square stage set up in the middle of the stadium, with loudspeakers and amplifiers on all four sides of the stage. The main PA system featured 36 JBL VTX V25 fullsize line array elements, flown in left-right arrays of nine elements each, at the front of house and opposite sides of the stage. These were supplemented with a total of 32 VTX S28 subwoofers, deployed on the ground in four cardioid-configured arrays of eight each.

The other two sides of the stage featured left-right arrays of six JBL VERTEC® VT4889 fullsize line array elements each, for a total of 24 VT4889 elements. A total of 24 VERTEC VT4880 subwoofers were on these two sides of the stage, deployed on the ground in four cardioid-configured arrays of six each. Powering the loudspeakers were 32 Crown VRack 12000HD amplification systems (for a total of 96 I-Tech 12000HD amplifiers). Utilizing the built-in signal distribution and on-board DSP resources of the VRack 12000HD’s, TYAA was able to drive the entire system with JBL V5 tunings, maximizing the performance and linearity of the VERTEC and VTX loudspeakers.

Sixteen JBL STX815 loudspeakers were pole-mounted for supplementary fill, with additional STX815 loudspeakers for stage monitors, powered by eight Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD amplifiers. Soundcraft Vi6 and Vi1 consoles were each used at the FOH and monitor positions, with system design and management handled by JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™.

“We collaborated on the system design with Performance Manager, virtually building the system together within the framework of the software, and it was an incredibly smooth process,” said Eric Friedlander, Business Developer, Tour Sound, Crown Audio (who provided onsite support for the event). “TYAA worked with [Senior Manager, Tour Sound for JBL] Paul Bauman to optimize the PA virtually in JBL Line Array Calculator 2, so when setting up the system, we simply had to load the Performance Manager file into the amps and it made for a phenomenal starting point.”

“In addition, Performance Manager was key in setting up the cardioid subwoofer configurations on-site,” Friedlander added. “Setting up the proper DSP with one click on a speaker in Performance Manager enabled TYAA to simply deploy the subs knowing the optimal settings were already in place.”

This was the first event at which TYAA used its full VTX system, which it purchased through Mahajak Development Co., Ltd, HARMAN’s Thailand distributor.

“Unquestionably, it is a great honor for us to have this opportunity to employ world-class audio systems for the best performance for our customers,” said Chavalit Mahaviriyakul of TYAA. “We could not be more confident in HARMAN and Mahajak, as well as our decision to upgrade to the JBL VTX series.”

Christie’s South American Subsidiary Opens Office In São Paulo

Share of South American AV and digital cinema market expected to grow rapidly this decade

Christie®, a world leader in visual technologies, continued to expand its presence in South America with the opening of its first office and showroom in São Paulo, Brazil, which was celebrated with a reception attended by customers and business partners of Christie Digital Systems South America Ltda., and leading dignitaries of the Brazilian cinema exhibition industry. The opening is part of a wave of global expansion by Christie, which includes new subsidiaries and offices in South Africa, Australia and India during the past twelve months.

Jack Kline, president and CEO, Christie Digital Systems USA, Inc., said the opening of the São Paulo facility is critical in meeting the accelerating demand for Christie’s digital cinema, ProAV, visualization and simulation solutions and services throughout South America, especially in Brazil.

“The country of Brazil specifically is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies and São Paulo is the ideal central geographic location from which to increase our share of the South America market, and to provide in-region customer service and support, most notably in the digital cinema market, where we already have an established and growing customer base,” Kline added.

Bruno Tavares, general manager of Christie Digital Systems South America Ltda., said the new facility at Rua Gomes de Carvalho 1765, Suite 12, São Paulo, will initially be headquarters to a dozen sales and service staff, as well as showrooms and training rooms with many products, including the DCI-compliant Christie® Solaria One, which is ideal for community theaters in emerging markets such as South America.

Tavares told guests attending the opening ceremony: “Christie projectors and other solutions have been in use in theaters throughout South America for years, but with the move from film to the mandatory digital movie format, we fully expect Christie to become the digital cinema supplier of choice. As a consequence, we have an option to expand in this same location in anticipation of Christie and its South American partners capturing increased market share in the region.”

Among distinguished guests attending the opening ceremony and reception were national and local government dignitaries as well as blue chip representation from the Brazilian cinema industry, headed by Manoel Rangel, president of the Brazilian Motion Picture Agency (ANCINE).

The guest list also had a strong representation from Christie’s key customers in Brazil including Luiz Severiano Ribeiro Neto from Kinoplex; Marcos Araújo, Grupo Araújo de Cinemas; Adhemar Oliveira, Grupo Espaço de Cinema; Marcos Barros, Cinesystem; Gilmar Santo, Cineflix; and Toninho Campos, Roxy Cinemas.

Several Christie business partners also attended the opening and tour of the new facilities including Lorenzo Garcia from Kelonik; Francisco Severino da Silva and Thiago Pereira from Santa Clara Poltronas; and Guillermo Younger, Alex Younger and Guillermo Younger Jr., of CE+S.

Christie has been active in Brazil through partners for many years and has sponsored key film festivals and industry conferences, including the 6º Show de Inverno Campos do Jordão, on April 25-27.

Basingstoke, England – New at NAB 2013 from Hi Tech Systems is a further development to the unique and popular AViTA production control system that is deployed by broadcasters worldwide. AViTA is already in use for news play out, automation back up, studio production and scheduled record – and now Hi Tech offers multi-camera record and review.

This provides a clear and easy way to control up to sixteen record, or a mixture of record and play, server channels for studio production work. AViTA interfaces to any professional video server and easily integrates into production and post-production workflows. Scenes and takes can be captured with metadata and production notes directly associated with recordings. Camp Creative Chooses ProMAX Platform for Shared Storage Solution

(SANTA ANA, CA) ProMAX, the innovative provider of turnkey editorial, shared storage, and asset management solutions, has announced that Camp Creative has chosen ProMAX Platform as their shared storage solution. Camp Creative, a marketing and experiential event design agency serving clients in the Bay Area and across the U.S., had Platform installed to meet their creative needs in January of this year, and the server has been running nonstop as the facility’s replacement for its aging SAN (Storage Area Network).

Introduced in November of last year, Platform is a crucial development in the shared storage market that provides a modular approach to the changing needs of users. Modules can be added to the enterprise-class server as building blocks to support growing and changing demands, as required. With Platform, one uniquely flexible server brings together shared storage, asset management, archiving, and transcoding for the first time.

Camp Creative implemented the ProMAX Platform with the 32TB SHARE module, which offers high-speed, expandable online backup and storage. The company’s four edit stations are connected to Platform over 10 gigabit Ethernet, and all assets and footage stored on Platform can be accessed by any edit station, facilitating speed and promoting collaboration. Two other computers are connected to Platform via 1Gb Ethernet, and more ports are available so Camp Creative can add additional computers and laptops with ease.

“We’re a one-stop shop from concept to completion, so the solution we chose had to be flexible enough to accommodate editorial, color correction, audio and motion graphics software, including MAXON CINEMA 4D, Autodesk Maya, Adobe After Effects, Illustrator and Photoshop,” says editor-director Adam Planas of Camp Creative. “A number of things made Platform stand out. The system was very comparable to other players in the space, but its price point worked within our budget. ProMAX was also more responsive throughout the process. We felt really comfortable working with them, and it felt like they were answering all of our questions honestly and intelligently.”

Camp Creative took advantage of ProMAX’s unique place in the market, as both a manufacturer and systems integrator, utilizing their problem-solving expertise to craft the right technical solution for them.

“We had a good idea of the amount of storage and connection speeds we needed, but one of our edit stations is older and one is a new laptop with no Ethernet port,” Planas recalls. “We told ProMAX early on about these issues, and they were very responsive and worked with us to find the best way to organize our edit stations around the system. They had a real understanding of how we worked in our agency. It’s one thing to know your product and how it’s built, and another thing to understand the nitty-gritty of how people actually use it.”

Built with the ProMAX modular advantage, Platform currently offers three additional modules to SHARE: TRANSCODE which manages an entire facility’s transcodes in one advanced server; DAM which puts a complete asset management system into facility workflow; and ARCHIVE for direct backup and archive from Platform and automatic scheduled backups.

Camp Creative knows they have the flexibility to expand their storage capacity and scale up with additional Platform modules as their needs require. “We needed an immediate replacement storage solution, so we moved forward with SHARE, but it’s great to know that Platform’s data management and archiving modules are available if we need them,” Planas says.

Jess Hartmann, CEO of ProMAX, comments, “Camp Creative is an outstanding agency and a great group of people to work with. We designed Platform to enable just such a company. The ProMAX modular approach allows them to expand as needed and add multiple functions to their server without buying more hardware.”

Camp Creative counts Cisco, Google, HP, Nissan, Visa and Zynga among its roster of top-tier clients. Planas concludes, “We are a creative agency, so the extra bonus for us was that Platform was also the coolest-looking solution available. It’s an aesthetically pleasing system instead of just a bunch of drives. It has not only been developed well on the software side, but on the hardware side too.”

About ProMAX Systems

HARMAN’s JBL Loudspeakers Star On New American Idol Set

NORTHRIDGE, California – American Idol reigns on as one of the most successful shows in television history. Its mix of stars in the making, spirited interplay between celebrity judges and the show’s wildly enthusiastic live audiences continues to enthrall viewers. For the show’s upcoming live episodes, Valencia, California-based ATK Audiotek revamped the American Idol set with a variety of HARMAN’s JBL Professional loudspeakers to meet the unique audio demands of the show’s new staging.

Baltzell designed some novel loudspeaker arrangements for the new American Idol system. “We had to accommodate a number of needs for the new set at CBS Television City in Hollywood, and they can’t be accommodated by a one-size-fits-all system,” said Pat Baltzell, sound designer for American Idol. “The main PA needs to be heard loud and clear by the performers and audience. However, we need a separate audio system for when host Ryan Seacrest and the contestants are speaking, because they’re on lavalier mics and the judges are situated right in the middle of the main PA system.”

Left-right arrays of 10 JBL VERTEC® VT4889 fullsize line array elements on each side comprise the main PA system. The main hangs are complemented by a front fill system of six VRX932LAP Constant Curvature loudspeakers installed into the set. Two VRX928LA compact Constant Curvature loudspeakers are also installed into the contestant couch set to provide a mix minus foldback of the judges and Ryan Seacrest. Four JBL Control 8SR speakers are installed in two additional mix minus zones under metal gratings in the stage serving as foldback speakers for Ryan and the contestants during periods of dialogue.

“Since the judges’ table is more than 60 feet away from the stage and the judges are somewhat removed from the main stage, we built three JBL AC15 compact speakers right into the judges’ table,” said Baltzell. “We know that as the season progresses, the audience becomes more animated, and come April and May when the number of contestants is whittled down and the audience has chosen its contestant, the ambient noise gets even louder but the judges still need to clearly hear the performances. The mix that is sent to the judges’ table speakers is only the lead vocal and the background singers. The AC15 does a remarkable job.”

“Another very important consideration is that a lot of the contestants are younger and they have big voices but limited microphone technique,” Baltzell added. “This puts a lot of demands on the audio engineers to control the mix and apply limiting, and for the judges to hear the contestants properly those AC15 speakers need to get loud without distortion.”

To ensure that dialogue will be clearly heard, no less than 280 Control 25 loudspeakers are placed under every other seat in the audience.

“The American Idol audio system might be unconventional, but it ensures optimum audio reproduction for dialogue, singers and musicians,” Baltzell concluded. “We’re looking forward to wowing everyone as the show builds to its season finale.”
