Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences Includes HARMAN’s Lexicon Processors In Its Audio Recording Curriculum

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences (CRAS) is a technical school specializing in audio recording, engineering and production education. Its Tempe, Arizona and Gilbert, Arizona facilities train students for entry-level jobs in the recording industry. Students are immersed in learning how to use a wide range of professional gear, including HARMAN’s Lexicon PCM92 Reverb and Effects Processor and MX400 4-In/4-Out Reverb/Effects Processor with USB “Hardware Plug-In” capability.

Four Lexicon MX400 processors are integrated into the school’s analog and digital Pro Tools-based Studio A, B and C facilities, and two PCM92 processors are in the main Studio A rooms on each campus. In addition to being part of each studio’s gear, they’re a fundamental part of the students’ education.

“Our students get exposed to Lexicon early on,” said Tony Nunes, audio recording and production instructor at CRAS. “They start by learning basic chops and how to integrate outboard gear into the total recording setup. Our focus is very much hands-on, and we want students to be familiar with Lexicon as it’s what they’ll be running into in professional record production studios.” In addition to the MX400 and PCM92, CRAS is equipped with legacy Lexicon PCM 80 and PCM 70 reverb and effects processors.

The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences curriculum is organized in cycles, with Lexicon used in a number of programs and clinics in the cycles. Nunes begins by teaching students the basics of time-based processing including getting familiar with the MX400 and PCM92’s effects and parameters, choosing the best reverb for a vocalist or particular instrument, learning proper signal routing, when to use mono or stereo ins and outs and getting familiar with using multiple effects on different tracks.

Students progress to working on getting the best sounds from drums, vocalists, a three-piece band, electric and acoustic guitars and other instruments, using mics, the MX400 and PCM92 and other studio tools. For the eighth cycle, students must engineer a drum clinic where they choose the mics, put up a previously recorded session and overdub new tracks with a live drummer. Part of the assignment is to choose the Lexicon plate reverb that sounds best with the snare and sits well in the mix.

“We are very excited to be a small part of the wonderful work being done at CRAS,” said Noel Larson, Market Manager for Portable PA, Tour and Recording at HARMAN Signal Processing. “Lexicon defines reverb for modern recording and we want to make sure the next generation of top performers, engineers and producers feel the same way the current generation does.”

“Teaching our students how to mix is very much integrated into the curriculum at every step,” Nunes noted, “but we really start getting into time-based processing and advanced techniques for using the MX400 and PCM92 during the last three cycles.” Here, students learn to fine-tune every aspect of their mix, dig deep into Lexicon’s choice of mono and stereo reverbs, filters and modulation effects and discover how they can be used to enhance the acoustic ambience of a track and add the finishing touches to a recording.

Nunes concluded, “In these sessions the Lexicon 80, 70, MX400 and PCM92 are always on and are always providing a contribution to the mixes.”

Christie® has donated a top-of-the-line Christie digital cinema projector to help entertain the local community in the new Gianopulos Family Theater at the Wilson-Hanks Family Cultural Center, Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, California. The theater is the latest addition to the Huffington Center, located in the Byzantine-Latino Quarter of Los Angeles. A gala dedication ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 17, to unveil the new theater to the community and parishioners of St. Sophia, and to celebrate all of the benefactors involved in the development of this new venue. Christie will also be presented with a plaque that will be affixed to the theater in honor of its contribution to the center.

Movies Bring People Together
A respected community institution, Saint Sophia is a Greek Orthodox Cathedral committed to serving the needs of the people of Los Angeles. Its non-profit entity, the Saint Sophia Foundation, developed the Huffington Center as a dedicated place where community members can gather for celebrations, meetings, performances and special events. Completed in February 2012, the new 53,000 square foot facility brings Los Angeles together in its banquet halls, cultural center, library, museum, basketball court, and more.

But there was one thing missing to fully complete the center as an all encompassing entertainment and events complex – a movie theater that could be used to host community events, pre-release screenings, and various third-party bookings.

BLACKSTAR and Christie’s Managed Services Team install a “Slam Dunk”
BLACKSTAR Engineering worked with Christie’s Managed Services team to install the equipment for a new convertible movie theater for the Center. The installation included a Christie CP2230 digital cinema projector, a Stewart Filmscreen projection screen, and a new sound system – all of which were designed and integrated to fit flawlessly into the architecture of the Huffington Center’s gymnasium.

“The idea to convert the gymnasium into a permanent, fully-functional theater came later, so the end goal was to allow for the gymnasium to host sports activities during the day and screen movies and other digital content in the evening, and to make the transformation with a minimal need for any special technical assistance,” explained Sean James, vice president, Managed Services, Christie. “We had to do more than transform a basketball court, complete with retractable baskets and bleachers, into a dynamic and multipurpose venue. We also had to ensure that the room could be converted with as little effort as possible, and that the theater would entertain an audience with the same degree of quality and comfort as a permanent theater.”

According to Andrew G. Setos, CEO of BLACKSTAR Engineering and the lead designer who worked on the project, BLACKSTAR and Christie had to come up with solutions to overcome a number of technical and design challenges. This included adjusting the location of the retractable basketball supports to allow for enough room for the screen case and designing a projector pedestal that would keep the light path above the audience.

“The transformation of the venue required acoustic, electrical, sound system, projection, and other design disciplines to be brought to bear so that, in the final result, it would not sound and look like ‘a movie screen in a gym’,” said Setos. “Christie Managed Services took my team’s design for the sound and picture aspects of the theater and realized it with top level professionalism. It has been a complete pleasure working with them to achieve this ambitious vision.”

The installation was completed in January 2013 and the Christie DLP® digital cinema projector is now lighting up a 36-foot-wide by 15-foot-high screen in brilliant color and high definition. To convert the theater for screenings and events, the bleachers are retracted, theater flooring is placed over the hardwood court, theater seating is installed, the screen is lowered, and the digital cinema equipment is powered on and ready to go.

“Everyone at the center is extremely happy with the final result and thoroughly impressed with the quality of the exhibition,” said Setos. “With all of the new upgrades, we have developed a truly state-of-the-art facility. This is a no-compromise 3D digital cinema and, when the lights go down, the experience of sound and picture is unsurpassed. This is owed in large part to the exceptional brightness afforded by the Christie projector, which has been a central element to the systems’ performance.”

Time for a Celebration
At the dedication ceremonies on March 17, a screening of the Oscar winning picture, “Life of Pi,” will be shown in 3D to showcase the new abilities of the theater.

WorldStage Returns to CES 2013 with Intel

Living up to its branding as Sponsors of Tomorrow, the innovative Intel booth at CES 2013 presented the electronics giant’s forward-thinking products with AV support from WorldStage, the new brand for Scharff Weisberg and Video Applications, Inc. CES 2013 marked the fourth consecutive year that WorldStage partnered with Intel on its booth; WorldStage also recently provided AV support for the keynote at the Intel Sales Management Conference.

With the promise of connecting to richer experiences with Intel, the company’s presence at CES 2013 in Las Vegas showcased third-generation Intel Core processor-powered Ultrabook devices and tablets as well as several phones and tablets powered by Intel Atom processors.

This year WorldStage teamed with client Taylor Group and designers 2LK and (Rockwell Design) on the AV components for the Intel booth, handling all of the AV integration. WorldStage provided two media walls composed of Barco C5 LED tiles; one LED wall served as a decorative element to engage passersby and pull them into the booth, and the second acted as the primary presentation screen for an ongoing series of demos, performances and product introductions which were integrated into the Spotlight Theater’s AV system.

WorldStage also supplied a Meyer-based audio system for the booth and presentation area as well as a number of 46-inch thin-bezel monitors.

James Sarro was project manager for WorldStage and managed the AV integration for the booth as a whole, and Terry Nakamura was the LED technician. Raul Herrera handled network systems and video playback, as well as electronic interfacing with the lighting team to manage lighting effects with the Spotlight Theater’s presentations.

Georgia Tech Overhauls Global Learning Center Digital Content Workflow with PESA Cheetah Router

Huntsville, Alabama – PESA, a leading U.S.-based custom design and build manufacturing company for professional audio and video signal distribution, today announced that Georgia Tech Online (formerly Distance Learning) is using a new PESA Cheetah 288XE digital video router at its Global Learning Center in Atlanta as part of its migration to HD production for its online professional education coursework. The new PESA router was installed in late December, and the Center is currently migrating to the new system.

Built in the heart of Georgia Tech’s Technology Square, the Center is the university’s main hub for online education, including professional and non-credit courses. When the building opened about 10 years ago, a PESA Tiger 144×144 router was installed to handle AV sources throughout the Center for recording to DVD. Eventually, a second router was installed to handle computer-based rich media capture.

According to Steve Allen, senior AV/IT support professional, working with two routers has been a “logistical nightmare,” because each router works from a separate, incompatible scheduling device. The new PESA Cheetah 288XE will eliminate the need for two routers and simplify scheduling. “I can handle it all in one router – and not worry about two routers or two different parallel paths,” Allen added.

Reliable routing is essential to Georgia Tech’s distance learning operation. Instead of dedicated codec stations for each room, the Center maintains a “codec farm.” All signals – including audio, video, and high-resolution computer-based content – are routed to a bank of capture stations that serve the entire facility. Not only does this create redundancy, Allen noted, but it saves on equipment costs.

The Center is using Cattrax Web, PESA’s Web browser-based control software, for monitoring and controlling its new Cheetah router. Allen said the user interface makes it easy to route resources on the fly, and the flexibility in naming sources (beyond the eight character limit of earlier routers) is helpful. He also uses the system’s unique password protected user profiles to restrict some users from accessing certain I/Os.

Three of the facility’s 16 studio classrooms have already been converted to HD, and plans are in place to convert a fourth room. Room upgrades include cameras, switchers, matrix switchers, and fiber connectivity, as well as PESA Vidblox extenders and QuadBlox units that are used to transport AV and rich media content back to the new Cheetah router. Allen said the Center’s transition to HD production is a slow process, as classes remain in session and classrooms cannot be shut down for an extended period of time.

After a “solid” 10-year run with a smaller PESA router, Allen was confident in trusting the Center’s upgraded HD routing requirements to PESA. “This is the heart of our system. I needed something I could count on,” he said. “I knew I could count on PESA.”

SYMETRIX JUPITER 8 APP BASED TURN-KEY DSP JOINS THE JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – MARCH 2013: When the new owner of the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars sought to boost team morale and solidify team camaraderie, he focused on renovating the locker room – the place where the team members gear up, hang out, and let off steam. It’s a sign of the times that perhaps the most critical and appreciated improvement came in the form of a brand new, high-impact audio-visual system. Under the direction of Neil Cooper, senior project manager for Florida Sound Engineering, they designed and installed the Jaguar’s new A/V system, which relies on a dependable and cost effective Symetrix Jupiter 8 app based turn-key DSP for critical signal conditioning and routing.

“The team came to us with a simple request,” Cooper explained. “They wanted a rockin’ sound system with plenty of screens to go with it. They really wanted to give the players a place to associate with… a place to retreat to and enjoy. Because we pride ourselves on building long-lasting systems, I place a premium on reliability and quality. When I looked at my options for processing, the Symetrix Jupiter 8 DSP was an obvious choice. It’s powerful and easy to set up, and nothing else comes close to matching its feature set for the price. In addition to the literal locker room, the new system covers all of the more extensive facilities that go with it, including the showers, the drying area, the restaurant, the cool- and hot-tanks, the therapy room, the equipment room, the manager’s area, and more. All thirty-three of the inputs, only two of which are audio-only, are fully matrixed such that any input can be selected in any zone. Apart from the locker room itself, which uses a DBX Drive Rack processor, the rest of the system relies on the Symetrix Jupiter 8 DSP, which takes its inputs from a Crestron control and matrixing system. Its eight outputs feed separate zones. QSC amplifiers, loudspeakers, and subwoofers fill the audio portion of the new system.

“Despite the complexity of the Jaguar’s new A/V system, programming the Symetrix Jupiter 8 DSP was super easy,” said Cooper. “I used the Sound Reinforcement #6 App, which gave me great sounding equalization and dynamics. I know that there are other manufacturers who make 8 x 8 processors of good quality, but the price isn’t there. The Symetrix Jupiter DSP delivers the quality, flexibility, reliability, and affordability that makes my clients smile.”

The Jaguar’s new video system is comprised of two 80-inch, five 52-inch, four 46-inch, and seven 42-inch full-HD Sharp flat screens. Inputs include ten Comcast TV sources, a Blu-ray player, Apple TV, and two wall plate inputs. The Crestron DM system scales everything appropriately such that the full screen is filled for any input/output combination. A 15-inch Crestron interface in the equipment manager’s area provides total system control, and a smaller nine-inch Crestron interface in the locker room allows selection of presets, such as “pre-game,” “half-time,” and “post-game.”

The National Radio Company of Ukraine (NRCU) has expanded its stock of microphones by investing in six DPA Reference Standard 4011C compact cardioid microphones.

Vyacheslav Zhdanov, Head of Audio at NRCU, says “Buying these microphones was not a difficult decision to make. We had previously been renting DPA microphones so our engineers were familiar with them and knew they offered exceptional sound quality. New Hitachi HDTV Camera Raises Bar on Picture Quality and Operational Efficiency

WOODBURY, New York – At NAB 2013, Hitachi Kokusai Electric America will introduce the Z-HD6000 CMOS HDTV studio camera, featuring a new 2/3-inch CMOS camera processor at the 2013 NAB show taking place April 6-11 in the Las Vegas Convention Center. Hitachi Kokusai Electric America will exhibit in booth C4309.

With its 2.6 million pixel, 2/3-inch, 1920×1080 raster MOS RGB sensors, the new Z-HD6000 raises the bar on picture quality. The new Z-HD6000 improves operational and cost efficiency within studio environments because its camera head provides extra power, communication channels, and other built-in features not typically found in cameras of its class.

“We’ve designed the Z-HD6000 camera with integrated features that enhance the studio production workflow, while saving our customers money,” said Sean Moran, vice president of Sales, Broadcast & Professional Division at Hitachi Kokusai Electric America. “By incorporating useful operational features in the camera system, we’ve eliminated the need for external hardware and extra wiring; making our system simpler to use, integrate, and deploy.”

Access to power

Having built-in access points for extra power means that studio personnel can run a teleprompter in addition to a floor or studio monitor from the camera head without the need for external power sources. Joe Tymecki, chief technical officer of Vermont Public Television, owns four Hitachi SK-HD1000 digital HDTV studio cameras, which also have this feature. “Because the camera head provides a high amount of power for the teleprompter, it made integrating our system a lot easier,” said Tymecki. “It saved us the expense of the extra integration time and of having to acquire external power.”

With built-in access to multiple communication channels, the Z-HD6000 also provides: two IFB channels for listen only, two aux feeds that can send video to the operator, two video feeds that can go to talent and studio monitors, a second intercom channel for the floor manager or spotter, and a tally viewable in the talent prompter, among other features. “Occasionally we need a floor director or additional production talent who do not have access to wireless headsets,” Tymecki explained. “It’s nice when these extra production people can just plug into a camera head in the studio without impacting the camera operators.”

The Hitachi Z-HD6000 also offers new features and functions including: ‘no vertical smear’, F12 standard sensitivity with over 60dB of signal-to-noise ratio, and an RLAC real-time lens aberration correction function. However, the Z-HD6000 also retains all the popular features and functionality inherent in the existing Hitachi HDTV camera line, such as: fiber or digital triax cable operation, external auto-setup, advanced color correction, and improved skin tone detail.

At the 2013 NAB Show, Hitachi will also exhibit the new SK-HD2200 full body HD production camera, featuring new 2/3-inch, 1080/60p progressively scanned Ultra-Advanced UAIT-CCDs; as well as the Hitachi SK-HD1200 native 1080/60p studio/EFP camera; SK-HD1000 dockable studio/field camera; Z-HD5000 HDTV studio/field camera; and DK-Z50 multi-purpose HDTV camera.
