Calrec Joins AVnu Alliance

HEBDEN BRIDGE, U.K. — March 5, 2013 — In an effort to drive the movement toward a common protocol for audio networking, Calrec has joined the AVnu Alliance, an industry consortium dedicated to the development and promotion of a professional-quality streaming standard for networked audio and video content based on the IEEE 802.1 Audio Video Bridging (AVB) standards.

“The AVB standard addresses Ethernet’s most serious shortcomings as a transport for streaming audio,” said Calrec Technical Director Patrick Warrington. “We know a lot about audio networking and have already brought two solutions to the table because we want to ensure that our customers’ needs are well-represented in the new protocol.”

“We are very pleased to welcome a broadcast audio leader like Calrec to AVnu Alliance,” said Lee Minich, AVnu Alliance Marketing Work Group chair and president of Lab X Technologies. “This underscores the desire for robust, standards-based networked AV transport guaranteed by AVnu-certified AVB devices for the broadcast industry.”

The first industry forum to lead the adoption of an Ethernet-based open networking standard, the AVnu Alliance certifies AVB devices for interoperability and provides member companies with certification tools to pre-test AVB-based devices before entering the formal testing procedures. The AVnu Alliance is joined by more than 50 manufacturers that include some of the largest AV, automotive, and semiconductor companies.

“Reliable interoperation is crucial for AVB’s success,” Warrington said. “We hope that AVnu accreditation will come to be recognized as a stamp of quality. Customers who buy products with the AVnu seal of approval will have confidence that they will connect together without any problems.”

Laemmle Royal Theatre Goes Digital With Christie Projectors

Christie® is providing best-in-class digital projection to the newly-renovated Laemmle Royal Theatre in Santa Monica, bringing 21st century projection to guests and the first boothless cinema within Los Angeles. The conversion to digital was part of an upgrade made throughout the Laemmle chain.

“Being 100 percent digital made the renovation easier as we were able to carve out multiple auditoriums without having to allocate additional space for a projection booth,” said Greg Laemmle, president of the company. “We got back space in the old projection booth which has now been put to other uses. And we also avoided the cost of building new booth space. It’s great to have all the equipment, including our Library Management Server (LMS), as part of the box office. That way, staff can input movie files and set playlists while still being available to customers.”

In addition to digital projection, the newly-restored theater has stadium seating and three screens instead of one, which will allow it to expand its programming and offer more choices to its guests. Prior to the renovation, The Royal was one of the last ‘one screeners’ in the city.

With eight locations and 41 screens throughout Los Angeles, the independent Laemmle chain was started by Laemmle’s grandfather and great-uncle in 1938, and has highlighted the work of independent filmmakers. It also carries mainstream titles such as “Hitchcock” and “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” The Royal re-opened in late December, 2012 with LA’s exclusive engagement of “Amour.” With the conversion of The Royal, a traditional cinema built in the 1920s, the chain is now 100 percent digital.

“We have a long history of working with Christie. We had our share of hiccups during the conversion process, but the Christie team has been very responsive. We truly feel they’ve been our partners in getting the art house scene switched over to digital. They took the time to understand how our world is a little different from the world of major studio exhibitors, and were willing to adjust to come up with a better program,” said Laemmle.

Craig Sholder, vice president, Entertainment Solutions, Christie, said the firm is proud to be part of the renovation of The Royal, and the digital upgrade throughout the chain.

“It’s important to Christie to work with each customer to create the solution that works best with their unique needs. Independent cinemas are a vibrant part of the industry and it’s our pleasure to help them make the transition from film to digital.”

Christie integration partner Southern California Cinetech managed the conversion to digital throughout the chain. Cinetech installed Christie CP2210 and CP2220 projectors from the Christie Solaria® Series digital projectors, and orchestrated the Christie Virtual Print Fee (VPF) financing plan, with Christie’s Managed Services team providing monitoring and maintenance services.

The Christie Solaria Series meets both exhibition and post production studios’ demands for 2D and 3D presentations for feature film and alternative content. With more than 36,000 installations around the world, Christie’s knowledge and experience with digital projection is unmatched in the industry.

Mohegan Sun Bets on Clay Paky GlowUps

Mohegan Sun, one of New England’s top destinations, has purchased a number of Clay Paky GlowUp portable, battery-powered luminaries.

Located in Uncasville, Connecticut, Mohegan Sun offers gaming in three casinos, fine dining, luxury accommodations, retail shopping, live entertainment and sporting events. Attractions include an indoor 55-foot waterfall, electrifying water wall and the world’s largest indoor planetarium dome. Entertainment venues are a 10,000-seat Arena, 350-seat Cabaret Theatre and 300-seat Wolf Den.

“We chose Clay Paky GlowUps because we do a lot of events on the fly in various locations,” says Brian Horne, Lead Lighting Technician for Sports and Entertainment at Mohegan Sun. “We were looking for a wireless LED that we could connect to a console. One challenge is that since we’re a casino, WiFi can interfere with some of our equipment. The GlowUps’ frequency-hopping feature from Wireless Solutions was able to work within our system.”

Clay Paky’s GlowUp is a portable solution based on durable, high-power LEDs. Its light source is four 10W LEDs (with options for RGBW, Cool White, Dynamic White) with nominal power of 50W and a total output of 1200 lm.

By eliminating the logistical headache of running cables at events, the battery-operated luminaire dramatically reduces set up time, saves money and improves safety. With its rechargeable lithium battery, GlowUp provides years of energy-efficient service. The fixture, which weights just 16.5 lbs., is fully programmable allowing users to select scenes from a library of dozens of suggested colors and a number of pre-programmed, color-changing sequences.

“Our first application for the GlowUps was for the conversion of our buffet into a bourbon tasting lounge for our annual Sun Winefest event,” says Horne. “There was limited power and we needed something with a small profile to fit into little corners. Since the room was shoulder to shoulder, we were asked not to use cable ramps due to the Fire Marshal’s concerns.”

Horne notes that the GlowUps have been called into service for “other similar events,” typically with “a very short time to load in and out since the lights are very easy to use. You literally power them up, they see the transmitter and set the address. Their easy operation allows us to sneak in accent lighting as needed.”

In addition, he reports that A.C.T Lighting, Clay Paky’s exclusive distributor in North America, “has been great helping us get the GlowUps up and running.”

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “We’re excited about our new GlowUps and feel the Mohegan Sun applications are perfect for the fixtures.”

The Bose® RoomMatch® Loudspeaker Is the Musicians’ Choice at Hope Presbyterian Church

Bose® RoomMatch® loudspeakers and PowerMatch® amplifiers offered both the spoken-word intelligibility that the pastor, AV consultant and integrator were looking for, and the musicality that the church’s musicians wanted

Framingham, Massachusetts, February 28, 2013 – Speech intelligibility has become a vital criterion in selecting sound systems in houses of worship, and pastors, consultants and AV systems integrators alike strive diligently to find systems that work best for each particular church. At Hope Presbyterian Church, in Austin, Texas, they included one other group of ears when it came time to select the church’s next sound system: musicians. When the musicians weighed in after several rounds of listening tests, they chose the RoomMatch® loudspeakers from Bose® Professional Systems Division, which, as it turns out, is exactly the same conclusion the pastor, integrator and consultant all came to as well. Austin-based AV consultants, Dickensheets Design Associates, specified a loudspeaker array to cover the desired area composed of three different RoomMatch modules – the RM9010, RM12040, and RM9060 loudspeakers. These were paired with a RoomMatch RMS215 bass loudspeaker, and all were powered by a single Bose PowerMatch® PM8500N amplifier.

Consultant, Ken Dickensheets, arranged for demos of several high-end conventional and line array type speaker systems to take place inside the church. Music Minister, Nick Boltz, also brought in several of the musicians who play each week during services for their opinions. “We were listening for the practical things, like speech intelligibility and dispersion characteristics,” says Dickensheets, referring to himself, the integrator and the church’s lead pastor. “But the musicians were focusing on the aesthetic aspects of the loudspeakers. As it turned out, we all felt the same way about the same loudspeakers – the Bose RoomMatch array modules were the ones we all wanted. They were the only ones that worked for all of the different criteria. We felt that their speech intelligibility was the best, and the musicians found them to be the most musical speakers of all the ones we listened to.”

Installation was completed by Ace Audio Communications, Inc. of Hutto, Texas, which also installed a new FOH console and other equipment for a complete renovation of the church’s sound system.

It turned out to be the first installation of Bose RoomMatch and PowerMatch equipment for Ace Audio Communications, and the experience reinforced what AV Manager, Doug Windle, had heard about the Bose products. “The pattern control of the RoomMatch loudspeakers is very good – we were able to keep the energy off of the walls and keep it focused on the seats throughout the room,” says Windle. “And once we got started, the RoomMatch loudspeakers went up easily and flawlessly – we had the entire array assembled on the floor in less than 20 minutes.” Windle says he expects to be doing more Bose RoomMatch system installations in the future. “People might think of Bose as a consumer brand – they know them for their headphones and home theater systems – but for the RoomMatch and PowerMatch products, they put in an enormous amount of time and effort into research and development, and it shows in their performance. Now, I see integrators watching Bose very closely. They sense that there’s something unique here. And there is.”
