Barix Integrates with Enghouse Interactive Applications for Avaya CS 1000 IP Phone Systems

Solution enables IP voice paging over analog speakers via digital phone systems

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, March 25, 2013 — Conversion from analog to digital phone systems brings many benefits, from enabling voice communication on a common network to programming data applications. The transition also has its share of challenges, such as leveraging analog devices within digital voice environments. This includes enabling IP-based voice paging over existing analog speakers.

IP audio and control specialist Barix now collaborates with Enghouse Interactive, an enterprise-level communications software and services company, to eliminate this challenge in schools, hospitals, warehouses and other facilities transitioning to digital phone systems.

The solution extends the power of Enghouse Interactive Applications for Avaya CS 1000 (formerly Datapulse Progression), which enables IP voice paging in leading digital phone systems, to analog speakers using low-cost Barix IP audio hardware to receive and decode live voice. This adds functionality without forcing end users to discard speaker systems — thereby reducing costs and simplifying installations. The solution is also viable for decoding pre-recorded emergency notifications and data-centric audio applications, like bell schedules in K-12 schools.

“We’re essentially turning an analog speaker into an IP speaker with Barix,” said Dane Smith, technical services engineer, Enghouse Interactive. “It’s ideal in situations where it’s difficult or unsuitable to add phones, such as in school and hospital hallways. Instead, our customers can use existing systems by removing ceiling tiles and placing a Barix decoder between the Ethernet cable and the speaker.”

Enghouse Interactive Applications for Avaya CS 1000 were developed to enable organizations to leverage their investment in IP by delivering practical, converged business applications to Avaya IP telephones. Applications include voice paging, pre-recorded announcements, broadcast alerts and RSS feeds on IP phones for the Avaya CS1000 PBX system. The software is added to existing IP phone systems instead of requiring end users to purchase a separate paging system. Enghouse Interactive Applications for Avaya CS 1000 customers can subsequently pick up any receiver and page to single points or multiple zones; or initiate pre-recorded announcements from the IP phone or the Applications for Avaya CS 1000 web-based administration page. This enables remote activation of audio warnings in emergency situations.

Enghouse Interactive brings Barix into projects that extend IP voice paging and pre-recorded announcement capability to analog speakers. Barix Exstreamer IP decoders are shipped direct to the end user; Enghouse Interactive simply registers each device’s corresponding IP address to the network. All Barix devices are configured to receive multiple multicast streams, ensuring reliable delivery and minimal network traffic congestion.

Smith notes that the Barix interface is simple to learn and easy to use. “We investigated several IP speaker solutions, and chose the Barix Exstreamer for its simplicity and reliability,” he said. “One of the first questions asked when talking to new customers is whether they intend to send voice or pre-recorded audio announcements to IP speakers. The Exstreamers are easy to set up and once installed, listen for multicast streams on a specific port and reliably play out any messages that are sent out across those multicast addresses.”

Smith adds that more than one multicast address can be assigned to the same speaker for maximum impact. “The customer can have IT support, sales and finance as different zones, yet pages to any of the three will still go to the same speaker using Barix, which makes it so easy to deploy,” he said.

TNDV Advances to the NCAA Final Four Big Dance Concert Series

Mobile Production specialist to produce live concert audio and video for partial broadcast

NASHVILLE, March 25, 2013
TNDV heads to Atlanta early next month with its 40-foot expanding side mobile production truck, Aspiration, to produce audio and video for multiple live concerts during the NCAA Final Four tournament. The free, three-day Big Dance Concert Series event, taking place at Centennial Olympic Park near the Georgia Dome, will provide entertainment for Final Four attendees, with portions airing on CBS and streaming live to the web.

The Big Dance Concert Series brings several local and national acts to the same stage each night. Each concert is treated as a unique event, with different daily sponsors and special needs for each band. TNDV will work alongside production specialist GoVision, which hired TNDV and will provide all large format video displays for the concerts; and Unlimited Visibility, which will oversee lighting and staging among other production tasks.

Aspiration is built to support large, multi-faceted productions such as the Big Dance Concert Series, with multiple cameras, high-capacity routing and switching, and a comprehensive audio suite on board. However, the production challenges of injecting additional excitement across multiple events — and re-creating that excitement for home viewers — requires intense focus and dedication.

“This is a tough balance to achieve,” said Nic Dugger, president, TNDV. “The on-premises crowd wants to see the show better. They want tight shots of Zac Brown, and want to see the details of the instruments that the Dave Matthews Band is playing. Home viewers want a more complete story, with wide crowd views and establishing shots that make them feel as if they in the venue. Our talented crew will work alongside GoVision and Unlimited Visibility to accommodate both needs.”

Dugger anticipates special audio needs given the multiple band rotations, with TNDV producing special re-mixes for live broadcasts. TNDV will use festival style patching with a digital stage box and MADI fiber to feed Aspiration, and add crowd microphones to ensure that the live sound is authentic with local crowd flavor. The complete Aspiration audio production workflow will include ProTools multi-track recording and JoeCo MADI recorders.

On the video side, Dugger expects on-demand Deko graphics and Harris Broadcast HView SX Hybrid multiviewers to play big roles, with multiviewers used inside and outside the truck to monitor live signals. TNDV will also use multiple Aja Ki-Pro Recorders to provide quick recorded media turnaround to participating bands, and employ various up, down and cross-conversion tools to accommodate the GoVision displays and live broadcast feeds.

“The nightly change in sponsors creates significant operational challenges, including the ability to quickly reconfigure the technical infrastructure for different web streams,” said Brady Haass, director of sales, GoVision. “Aspiration clearly has the capacity to accommodate three major sponsors and all of their interactive needs from a mobile production standpoint.”

The complete lineup of bands can be found at: http://www.ncaa.com/final-four#!big_dance

Walter E. Washington Convention Center Increases Commitment To NanoLumens Display Technology

On its busiest days, as many as 15,000 people make their way into Hall D of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. Now, thanks to a new NanoLumens NanoSlim DS Design-Specific LED Display, all 15,000 visitors can stay informed and involved in the event underway as they enter and leave Hall D. Mounted just above the entrance to Hall D, the 7.5-foot tall by 23-foot wide, 6mm pixel pitch NanoSlim DS display is drawing crowds on its own and impressing prospective event producers, attendees and advertisers, according to St. Elmo Crawford, President of Digital Conventions, which operates all the digital signage at the convention center.

“When I first learned about NanoLumens’ display technology in 2011, I immediately thought of Hall D,” Crawford said. “But the size requirements were just too unique at the time. With the new NanoSlim DS line we were able to have a display built to our exact specifications, giving us a super bright, energy efficient, long-life display that is big enough to be seen clearly from 100 feet away. A projection system wouldn’t work here because of the bright ambient light, and any other manufacturer’s digital display would have weighed 5-10 times as much. The NanoLumens display provides 170 square feet of signage space and weighs less than 1,000 pounds! The display needed to be suspended from wires because of space constraints, and hanging a 10,000-pound display where people are walking under it was simply not an option.”

According to Michael Waxer, chief technology officer at Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia, this installation sets the pace for the entire industry. “We are proud to unveil our newest and largest NanoLumens LED display at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center,” he said. “Not only are we setting a digital trend by offering an enhanced event experience, but we are distinguishing ourselves as leaders in the hospitality industry by providing our clients with premier digital service including digital signage, high-speed wired and wireless services, mobile apps and web streaming.”

After Digital Conventions began using NanoLumens NanoFlex displays as large mobile signage in 2012, it quickly became clear that convention hall clients, advertisers and visitors were drawn to the displays for their brightness and detail.

“Our first NanoFlex displays were a hit in areas where we don’t have permanent signage, and they allowed us to sell more services to our clients without massive installation costs,” Crawford remarked. “That enthusiasm carried forward to the new DS display at Hall D, which was installed in early March and used immediately for the 2013 AIPAC Policy Conference. The organizers used it as an information and overflow video display, so people who were waiting in line to enter the conference could watch the speeches from outside the hall. The immediate response when event organizers see the display is ‘How do we get that as part of our display package?”

Crawford thinks that NanoLumens’ ability to build displays to meet exact space and shape requirements is going to lead more and more convention centers and large public spaces to develop design-specific displays for advertising and informational purposes.

“I’ve spoken with the people in charge of technology at a few other convention centers, and after a short conversation about our signage programs they all realized this is something they will have to incorporate to stay competitive and relevant,” he said. “We’ve had immediate success with this massive display, selling space to several major conventions in the first month after installation. We had a vision that we knew would increase our bookings, revenues and client satisfaction, and NanoLumens took that vision and made it a real, physical display. We look forward to our next NanoLumens purchase and expect to continue spreading their amazing displays throughout the convention center.”

NanoLumens’ NanoSlim DS Series is a bold departure from the traditional one-size-fits-all design paradigm that has been a mainstay of the display industry for decades. Available in 4mm, 5mm and 6mm pixel pitches, the NanoSlim DS Series allows customers to specify truly unique displays in their designs and open the door for corporations, retailers and venue operators to create a completely original digital experience.

NanoLumens displays are extremely slim, ultra-lightweight, energy efficient, and feature a bright, seamless, high resolution picture quality that can be viewed from any angle throughout the display horizon without color shift or image distortion. The company’s patented display technology, promises to transform the way marketers engage their customers in every type of trade show, retail, hospitality, stadium, arena, transportation and public event environment.

All NanoLumens displays accept input from nearly any device or content management system. There is no need for special software, hardware or special personnel to display content beautifully. With a profile of only a few inches, NanoSlim DS and NanoFlex DS can be installed on virtually any surface without being obtrusive, adding the ‘WOW’ factor to any environment without taking up precious space. NanoLumens’ patented display technology is optimized for indoor use, operating with virtually zero heat or noise while producing bright, rich, consistent color as well as superior off-axis viewing with no color shift or image distortion throughout the display horizon. NanoLumens’ technology has been named ‘Best Large-format LED Display’ of the year by Signage Solutions magazine in its 2012 Product of the Year awards program, as well as being recognized by Entrepreneur magazine as a 2011 future-proof tech trend and cited by The Wall Street Journal in its 2010 Technology Innovations Awards. NanoLumens’ technology also received the 2011 Breakthrough Technology of the Year Award at the American Technology Awards. Digital Signage Magazine awarded the NanoLumens NanoFlex a 2011 DIGI Award for “Best New Display Device – Non-LCD or Plasma.”

Since its founding in 2006, NanoLumens has built a portfolio of more than 20 international families of issued and filed patents on its flexible display technology that effectively address the commercial market void between relatively small flat-panel displays and huge, limited application LED boards. NanoLumens technology is not constrained by standard sizes and shapes, or by the weight, heat, noise and cost issues traditionally associated with commercial LED products.

Award-Winning Composer Michael Price Invests In Prism Sound’s High Quality Audio

Award-winning composer and producer Michael Price is using a Prism Sound Maselec Master Series MEA-2 equaliser on his latest project – creating the music for ITV’s acclaimed supernatural drama series Lightfields.

“I wanted something fabulous that could add some sparkle and warmth to the TV mixes we were doing in the studio for Lightfields. I loved the MEA-2 when I’d used it at Abbey Road so I decided to invest in one for my own studio,” Michael explains.

Prism Sound’s MEA-2 is a stereo or two-channel, four-band precision equalizer that is designed for recording and mastering applications where ultimate sonic performance, musicality and precision are required. The unit provides a very transparent signal path where only the desired equalization is obtained, without adding any particular sonic signature.

Developed for Prism Sound by engineer/producer Leif Mases, who has worked with a diverse range of artists including Abba, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck and Black Sabbath, the MEA-2 is one of a number of products in the Maselec Master Series range. All of these combine Leif Mases’ experience with the creative process and Prism Sound’s focus on engineering and technical excellence to ensure the delivery of great-sounding audio in an intuitive and easy-to-use package.

Michael, who has worked on more than 30 major studio pictures, says: “The MEA-2 is incredibly well made, but more than that it has a peculiar sonic ability to make things just sound better, without stamping too much of its own opinion on the music. It’s no surprise that mastering engineers love them, but it’s also a super useful thing to have in a mix studio.”

Michael bought his MEA-2 from Studioxchange, the official Prism Sound Retail Partner. It now has a permanent home in his project studio in Berkhamsted.
“This studio has been mostly digitally equipped up till now,” he says, “but I’m really excited about getting more into high-quality analogue gear. I’m really delighted with the sound I’m achieving with the Prism Sound MEA-2 and we always try and specify them when we are recording in studios like Abbey Road. Now that I own one, try prising it out of my hands. It’s going nowhere!”

As a film, TV, classical music and contemporary dance composer, equally at ease writing in full orchestral or more electronic idioms, Michael is in great demand. He is currently writing a new album for Erased Tapes Records, which will be released on vinyl later in the year, and is scoring the new independent British film, Delicious, on which Michael makes his producer debut.

He started his career as assistant to the film composer, Michael Kamen (Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Lethal Weapon), then worked as a music editor (Lord of the Rings, Children of Men and Love Actually), before returning to composition. Since then he has written the score for BBC’s critically acclaimed Sherlock series with David Arnold – a project that won them a Royal Television Society Award and BAFTA and EMMY nominations – and composed music for the Inbetweeners movie, Horrid Henry: The Movie and Cheerful Weather for the Wedding.

Vista Systems’ Spyder Goes Large in Leading Energy Company’s Collaboration Room

Once again Vista Systems’ Spyder is the video processor of choice at one of the country’s leading energy companies. This time a top independent oil and natural gas exploration and production company is deploying a Spyder X20 8×8 in its collaboration room where staff analyze geological maps in close detail.

“Spyder is used to edge blend two dual-link DVI projectors, each 2560×1600 native,” says Mitchell Warren of Ford AV, which designs, installs, services and rents professional sound, video and lighting systems from its base in Oklahoma City. “While Spyder primarily does edge blending, it also does some switching” for the 192×65-inch display in the high-end collaboration room. Sources for the big-screen display include laptops, high-resolution PC towers with dual-link DVI outputs, and videoconferencing.

Warren notes that Spyder delivers unique capabilities to the collaboration room. “I don’t know of anything else that will edge blend dual-link DVI resolutions,” he says. “Once you get above 1080p you don’t have many options besides the Spyder.”

Mark Seney was Ford AV’s project manager on the job.

MAGIX Becomes The First DAW Manufacturer To Embrace The Music Producers Guild’s ISRC Initiative

The Music Producers Guild’s efforts to establish an industry standard for embedding ISRC data within digital music files has received a significant boost with the announcement by MAGIX Software GmbH that it will incorporate EBU (European Broadcasting Union) Broadcast WAV files in the latest software upstate for its popular Sequoia Digital Audio Workstation.

André Standke, Product Manager Sequoia, MAGIX Software GmbH, says: “For years, Sequoia has been an integral part of leading broadcast and mastering studios worldwide. We focus our attention on delivering the best sound and tools by working closely with engineers and music producers including Sterling Sound in New York, Air Studios, Alchemy Mastering in London and many more.

“As optical media is gradually replaced by file and server based audio content, we will continue to support the changes to the mastering process with innovative developments such as EBU tech3352 and we are happy to announce this feature is now incorporated into Sequoia, our number one product on the market.”

From the MPG’s point of view, the importance of ISRC cannot be understated. ISRC, which stands for International Standard Recording Code, is uniquely allocated to every song recorded. These codes are then registered with royalty payment agencies, thus ensuring that recording artists and copyright holders are properly remunerated for their work when it is played on radio or TV.

In the past the ISRC information was included within sub data streams of a CD, but in today’s digital age, where music is often stored on digital WAV files, the ability to securely associate ISRC data with specific tracks has been lost. This is because the only common way to incorporate ISRC into a WAV file is via the file name – and if someone changes the file name or it is truncated or amended by a software program, the vital ISRC information can easily go missing.

To resolve this problem, the MPG’s Mastering Group has been working closely with the EBU to develop an industry-approved method for embedding ISRC data within a WAV file. Following discussions, it was agreed that the best solution was to use was the EBU’s existing Broadcast WAV File (BWF), a variant of the traditional WAV file that was developed for use by broadcasters. The EBU has now agreed to adopt the BWF as standard so that all-important ISRC data can be securely associated with specific tracks.

MPG Mastering Group board member and Alchemy Mastering Engineer Barry Grint, who is leading the BWF initiative, adds: “MAGIX’ decision to incorporate BWF into Sequoia is a significant step forward for the MPG’s initiative and we are delighted that the company has embraced BWF as the standard specification for file exchange. The new system is simple to implement and, once adopted, it will allow ISRC to flow through the whole production chain. We now hope that other DAW manufacturers will follow suit.”

Grint adds that ISRC is set to become the cornerstone of every aspect of digital asset management, from tracking and reporting through to royalty reporting and song identification.

“The entire music industry needs a robust and secure system for identifying tracks, and who had input into their creation, so that we can safeguard the incomes of all artists and copyright owners,” he says. “Ultimately, the adoption of BWF as standard will provide a cornerstone for the MPG’s Credit Where Credit is Due campaign, which aims to highlight the woeful lack of credit information within the digital domain. Our overall goal is to ensure that all music creators receive proper credit and proper payment for their work, and having an industry-standard technical solution that allows credit information to be included in the metadata is a major step forward in achieving this ambition.”
