The Sound of Success: Sennheiser and Infiniti Red Bull Racing Take the Lead in Innovation and Excellence

Race Day at the Formula One Shanghai Grand Prix: The excitement mounts. Second only to the incredible spectacle of the cars is the intense sound, as the air fills with the roar of engines. It’s a meeting of sound, vision and passion. Reflecting this unique fusion, Infiniti Red Bull Racing and Sennheiser are joining forces for the 2013 racing season. The audio specialist has been named as the first Official Audio Supplier, supplying professional audio solutions for the Factory debriefs, driver interviews and powering the DJ booth in the exclusive Paddock Club. The cooperation will be kicked off at the Shanghai race with a special DJ set from Chinese superstar DJ, Jamaster A, and the creation of an exclusive edition of Sennheiser MOMENTUM headphones.

Infiniti Red Bull Racing has dominated the Formula One World Constructor’s Championships for three years, has the car to beat and a red-hot pairing of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. Innovation, precision engineering, a passion for excellence, and a determination to be the best – Infiniti Red Bull Racing has epitomised these qualities. So too has Sennheiser, which has maintained its supremacy over 65 years at the forefront of high quality sound.

While Infiniti Red Bull Racing takes winning performance to the track, Sennheiser will take premium sound backstage as the first ever Official Audio Supplier to the Racing team. Sennheiser audio equipment will be used by Team Principal, Christian Horner, during his Team debriefs. Meanwhile, Sennheiser will also be helping fans get even closer to the action, with the wireless 2000 microphone series used for Paddock Club driver interviews.

A great start is all-important in Formula One: Sennheiser and Infiniti Red Bull will be launching the new relationship in style at the Shanghai Grand Prix, 11 – 14 April. Sennheiser will be wowing crowds with a very special DJ set by Chinese superstar, Jamaster A, who will perform for race visitors at the site entrance, equipped by Sennheiser. Later the party gets exclusive, as Jamaster A lays down the grooves for VIPs backstage in the prestigious Paddock Club, taking to the decks in the Sennheiser-powered DJ booth. At the European Races starting in Barcelona on 12 May, special guests of the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Team can enjoy professional sound additionally in the popular Red Bull Energy Station, which will be equipped with a Sennheiser wireless microphone system.

Throughout the season, the companies will be working together on a number of exciting projects that will take the sounds and sensations of Infiniti Red Bull Racing even further. The first development to be announced is the creation by Sennheiser of a very special Infiniti Red Bull Racing edition of its acclaimed MOMENTUM headphones, featuring the colours and logo of the F1 team. Part of Sennheiser’s Style Selection, the MOMENTUM combines high quality, luxury materials with incredible sound quality that draws on the audio expert’s longstanding expertise in high performance audio. DiaQuest ProductionLink Now Available for Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects

Software Plug-In Now Sold Separately or Bundled at Reduced Price

Yamaha StageMix 4.0 Now Available

Extron Introduces New Scalers for 3G-SDI and HDMI Cross Conversion

Extron DSC 3G-HD A and DSC HD-3G AExtron Electronics is pleased to introduce the DSC 3G-HD A and the DSC HD-3G A scalers for 3G-SDI and HDMI. The DSC 3G-HD A converts 3G-SDI, HD-SDI, and SDI video signals to HDMI, while the DSC HD-3G A converts HDMI to 3G-SDI/HD-SDI/SDI. Both products feature advanced Extron video signal processing with 1080i deinterlacing, Deep Color processing, aspect ratio control, and additional processing features for optimal format conversion and image quality. Selectable output rates are available from standard definition to HDTV 1080p/60 and 2K, plus 1920×1200 for the DSC 3G-HD A. For both products, audio from the analog stereo input or the digital video input may be embedded onto the video output. RTW Unveils Moving Coil Software for TM3 at NAB 2013

Loudness Moving Coil Instrument Now Available

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 10, 2013 — RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters and monitoring devices for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is proud to unveil the new TM3-SWMC Software for its TM3 series of TouchMonitors at the 2013 NAB Show (Booth C1844). This new software license, available as an add-on option, incorporates a moving coil emulation display.

This license expands the functionality of the TM3 TouchMonitor series, which includes the TM3 and TM3-3G, with PPM, VU and the new loudness moving coil instruments. The display can be chosen with vertical or horizontal orientation, numeric level information and peak indicators. Single-, double- and stereo-channel, instruments are now available. For stereo groups with PPM moving coil mode, additional M/S moving coil emulation is selectable. As with all instruments in the TouchMonitor series products, the user can individually define the instrument size and positioning on the screen to meet his specific application needs.

RTW’s TM3 includes features of the larger TM7 and TM9 versions in a compact size. Users can control it with a touch-sensitive display. Genelec Debuts New M Series Active Monitors for Project Studios at Pro Light + Sound 2013

NATICK, MA, April 10, 2013 — Genelec, the world’s pioneer in active monitoring, is debuting its new M Series Bi-amplified Active Monitors at Pro Light + Sound 2013 in Frankfurt (booth 8 H25). The energy-efficient M Series takes a new approach to monitor design as part of Genelec’s larger ongoing sustainable initiatives known as GES (Genelec Embedded Sustainability). The primary focus in developing the new M Series was to proceed with a sustainable mindset without sacrificing the accuracy and reliability for which Genelec has been known for the past 35 years – while also offering something new and innovative for project studio customers.

The first two models being introduced are the M030 and the M040 Bi-amplified Active Monitors, which employ a Natural Composite Enclosure™ (NCE™) manufactured for Genelec in Finland from wood fiber and recyclable material. The M030 and M040 use Genelec enclosure design heritage, featuring rounded edges and gently curved front and sides to provide minimized cabinet edge diffraction and superb imaging. Both models also utilize a Laminar Integrated Port™ (LIP™) for accurate low frequency response and minimizing the enclosure vibration and each employ an integrated advanced Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™), yielding large internal volumes with outstanding mechanical strength.

The M Series models feature new class D amplifiers developed in-house by Genelec’s R&D/engineering team. The class D amplifiers are highly efficient, low distortion amplifiers that operate cooler and lighter than class A/B amps. They also feature Intelligent Signal Sensing™ (ISS™) power management with auto power-off/auto power-on and with the standby power consumption of less than 0.5W. Automatic voltage selection allows the monitors to operate throughout the world. Additionally, the M Series has high-performance drivers, intuitive room response controls and system calibration with XLR/TRS and unbalanced RCA inputs.

The M030 utilizes a five-inch woofer and 0.75-inch metal dome tweeter, powered by a 50-Watt and 30-Watt amplifier, respectively. The free-field frequency response is 58Hz to 20kHz (+/-3dB), while low distortion peak SPL is 103dB at one meter. The M030 measures 10 3/4″ H (273mm) x 7 1/2″ W (190mm) x 7 1/2″ D (190mm) and weighs 8.8 lbs (4.6kg). The M040 employs a 6.5-inch woofer with a one-inch metal dome tweeter, powered by an 80-Watt and 50-Watt amplifier respectively. The free-field frequency response is 48Hz-20kHz (+/-3dB), while low distortion peak SPL is 107dB at one meter. The M040 measures 13 1/4″ H (337mm) x 9 1/4″ W (235mm) x 9″ D (229mm) and weighs 15.4 lbs (7.4kg).

Bose® Expands PowerMatch® Line of Configurable Multichannel Power Amplifiers with Three New Models

Company introduces three new PowerMatch® models to offer contractors and system integrators a complete range of market-driven amplifiers.

Framingham, Massachusetts, April 10, 2013 – Bose® Professional builds on its proprietary PowerMatch® amplifier technology platform with three additional models of configurable professional power amplifiers. Based on decades of research across multiple industries, Bose engineers optimized audio performance with a robust Class-D amplifier and power supply design that together are uniquely capable of maintaining top performance even with unexpected variations in AC line voltage, rack temperature, and output load conditions. Configurable through the use of QuadBridge™ technology, each amplifier is capable of combining 2 or 4 output channels, creating flexible options to drive different power levels and loudspeaker impedances.

Network versions (PM8500N, PM8250N, PM4500N, PM4250N) are also available for each model, which enable control and monitoring over standard Ethernet networks.

All models deliver flat frequency response, wide dynamic range, and low distortion regardless of output level: Full audio frequency response deviation is +/- 0.5 dB (@ 1W), total harmonic distortion is 99 dB for the PM4250 and PM8250 and >102 dB for the PM4500 and PM8500 (below rated power, A-weighted). All models are housed in a 2U chassis and require standard AC circuits.

In conjunction with proprietary ControlSpace® Designer™ software, PowerMatch amplifiers offer the fullest feature set in their class – including onboard loudspeaker DSP, support for both low and high impedance loads (without external transformers), front-panel user interface, and fault detection, plus a digital expansion slot for use with optional audio networking and Bose ESPLink cards. PowerMatch amplifiers are put through Bose’s rigorous quality testing procedures and are backed by a 5-year warranty. The PM8250, PM4500 and PM4250 will be available starting June 2013.

Guitar Collector Builds Rock Star Basement With ELAN g! AV and Lighting Control

Guitar aficionado Jack Jackson and his wife Kathleen throw one hell of a party — just ask the 80-plus people who attended their 2013 New Year’s bash, held in their new ultra-trendy, state-of-the-art basement lounge in their Hunterdon County, New Jersey home. The Jackson’s “basement” can go toe-to-toe with any posh Manhattan nightclub thanks to its custom-built bar, LED lighting accents, lounge area with a wraparound leather sofa and electric fireplace, 120-bottle wine cellar, ‘pillar of fire’ column with drink rests, a smoke machine and laser lights. But according to Jackson, the icing on this mini-nightclub’s cake is something that’s vital for a long night of partying — the room’s lighting, three TVs and two zones of audio are all super easy to control right from an iPad through the ELAN® g! Entertainment and Control System!

“We were used to going out to bars and clubs, but we love to entertain at home, too,” said Jack Jackson. “We’ve spent lots of time in Las Vegas, New York City, South Beach, you name it. So we used ideas from those places in the design of our new underground entertaining oasis, like the TVs in the bar area, the LED light strips underneath the marble bar, the pillar drink rests and the extra bar space on a separate wall. All the little accents make this a space most people don’t expect to see in a home. When we throw a party we want our guests to feel as if they are out at a bar or nightclub and let go of any reservations they might normally have when visiting a friend’s home.”

That’s not to say that entertaining guests is Jackson’s only hobby. After a brief addiction to the videogame Rock Band, he developed a strong desire to learn how to play a real guitar. In just a few months that desire turned into an entirely new pursuit — he outfitted a home workshop and began building his own custom guitars. From carving and painting the bodies to researching the right electronics and neck stocks to get the sound he wanted, this unexpected hobby taught him how to make something that is truly greater than the sum of its parts — a lesson he utilized when designing the new lounge.

“I love exploring new technologies and new hobbies, and I got really into Rock Band after I bought it for my kids,” he explained. “Kathleen and I would have competitions against our friends, and eventually I decided I needed to learn how to play the songs for real. I bought a Fender Mexican Stratocaster at Guitar Center, and when I wanted a second guitar, I decided to build it instead of buying another. Since then I’ve built more than a dozen guitars. I outfitted my home workshop solely for this purpose, and learning this craft taught me a lot about how a bunch of small parts can combine to create something incredible. It’s really a beautiful thing when everything comes together just how you pictured it.”

“If you compare the first guitar I built to the later models, it’s obvious that I learned a lot as I went along. It’s stunning how much difference a particular type of wood, or even the wood’s age, can make to the guitar’s sound and appearance. I approached the lounge design with this same idea, that the materials are as important as the implementation. So Kathleen and I enlisted the help of professionals to assist in choosing the best woods, countertops, tiling, cabinetry, decorations and electronics, and together we succeeded in breathing new life into an essentially dead space.”

The custom remodeler who built the lounge, helped design the space and suggested the materials, Joseph Pastore, had previously worked with Jackson to design his music studio and home gym, which are both located adjacent to the new lounge. To ensure all the electronics worked correctly and would make throwing parties easier than ever, Jackson hired a local custom integrator, 360 Media Innovations, to install the ELAN g! System, the in-ceiling speakers, the wall-mounted TVs, and integrate the lighting. This was 360 Media’s second job with Jackson as well, having wired and installed several in-wall speakers in the music studio.

After completing the new renovation, Jack and Kathleen needed to put their own special twist on the beverages they serve, so they embarked on yet another new hobby — brewing their own beer and bottling their own wine. With a fully stocked bar, two beer taps, a professional bar fridge with a selection of craft beers and the temperature-controlled wine cellar, they created what is quite literally the most state-of-the-art bar in their town.

“I like having things that no one else has,” he declared, “which is why I’ve built replicas of Eddie Van Halen’s legendary white ‘Frankenstrat’, Stevie Ray Vaughn’s guitar, and perhaps the most famous of them all, Eric Clapton’s ‘Daphne’. That’s why I wanted the lounge to be so professional and uniquely designed that no one has seen anything like it in a home, and that’s exactly what all our guests have said. Everything is gorgeous, from the bar to the tiled floor to the lounge furniture; I can tap my iPhone to change the TV, music and lights; and my music studio is just a few feet away with all my guitars on display. Between the bar, the lounge and the studio, our home has become much more than just another house.”

According to Kathleen Jackson, in order to maintain the feel of a real bar, eliminating wall clutter was a must-have feature. The g! System delivered in spades, letting them control the lounge’s lights, TVs and music from an iPad Mini or an iPhone. The custom integrators were able to move all the light switches into a separate room on a single large master control panel, so the Jacksons never have to use the individual light switches. Instead, they use the iPad Mini or two multi-button keypads located in the stairwell and behind the bar to activate pre-programmed lighting ‘scenes’ such as Lounge or Party that turn on or dim specific lighting fixtures throughout the room.

“Every design aspect resulted from a carefully considered decision,” she explained, “including removing the light switches and using in-ceiling speakers as opposed to obtrusive, boxy bookshelf or floor standing speakers. And along with the appearance, the ease of operation had to be absolutely seamless. We know that when a party starts, everyone is going to be coherent and quick thinking, but let’s be honest — we might not be in the same state at the end of the night! Again, it’s just like if you were out at a club. So we needed a way to control the lights, the TVs and the music that is super simple, and would also make it easy to shut everything off when the party dies down. With the ELAN g! System we can use the iPad Mini’s nice big touchscreen to change the channels, turn up the volume and dim the lights, and when the night’s over all it takes is a single button to turn everything off at once.”

To give the Jacksons complete control, 360 Media programmed the ELAN g! System so that all three TVs can display the same video or show different channels, just like a commercial bar, and the speakers in the bar can play different audio than the speakers in the lounge. That way they can have a sporting event on the main TV with hi-quality audio, and still have music playing by the bar. And all it takes is a few taps on the iPad Mini!

“At our 2013 New Years party everyone was trying to be the DJ, using the iPad Mini to change the music through the g! System,” Kathleen continued. “When our first guests arrived we showed them how to use it for 30 seconds, and that’s all it took for everyone to be able to use it all night. Plus the guys from 360 Media set up eight different lighting scenes for us, so there’s a special setting to bring up the bar lights, or for when we move the couches and have a dance floor, or for when we aren’t using the bar at all and are sitting in the lounge area. It’s so easy!

“Those types of nuances in the audiovisual and lighting system perfectly complement the design of the whole room. I set out to create a space where people would continue to discover new accents and flourishes throughout the night and even each time they revisit the house. It’s the little things — tiling that continues up the wall around the TV and fireplace, and also continues onto the step under the bar; coat hooks under the bar that you’d never expect in a home — that catch people off guard and keep them experiencing the room differently time after time.”

According to Jack, one of their favorite things about the ELAN g! System is that they didn’t have to break the bank to get everything they wanted. They were able to start off integrating the AV and lighting in the lounge, and then still have the ability to expand the system and control other subsystems in the future.

“We like it so much that we’re planning to grow the system and control the TVs and music upstairs,” he added, “and possibly tie in the HVAC and security system and add cameras, garage door controls and electronic door locks. We want to be able to look in on the house when we’re on vacation and have that extra peace of mind. It also makes things much more convenient, like if a package is being delivered we could open the garage door from anywhere in the world, and also set the outdoor lights to go on at night so it’s not obvious that no one is home. We know that automating the lights, heating and air conditioning could help us save energy and money, and it can even let us set up the house so it’s ready when we return from vacation. All things considered, the renovation has transformed our home into an entirely new house.”
