HARMAN’s Studer Showcases Smaller Vista 1 Console

FRANKFURT, Germany — The compact all-in-one HARMAN Studer Vista 1 console is now available in an even more compact 22-fader version, measuring just over 1 metre in width, and perfectly suited to small spaces such as found in OB vans. For smaller vans where the audio console fits into the cab area, the Vista 1 provides a comprehensive solution requiring no additional racks, including integral I/O, DSP and surround sound management including up and down-mixing. The low weight advantages of the new desk are immediately obvious.

The Vista 1 is based largely on the Vista 5, so existing Vista users will be immediately familiar with all the functionality of the Vistonics™ user interface plus features such as true broadcast monitoring, talkback, red light control, GPIO, N-x (Mix Minus) busses, snapshot automation and DAW control.

With an integral DSP engine of 96 channels, the Vista 1 can handle mono, stereo and 5.1 inputs with ease, and is provided with 32 mic/line inputs, 16 line outputs and four pairs of AES inputs and outputs on rear panel connections.

I/O can be expanded using the standard Studer D21m card slot on the rear, to allow MADI, AES, AoIP, ADAT, TDIF, CobraNet, Dolby E/Digital, SDI connections etc. A MADI link can connect to any of the Studer Stagebox range for XLR connectivity as well as other formats.

New to the Vista 1 is an integral jingle player, played from audio files on a USB jingle stick (such as station ID or background FX), and triggered by a series of eight dedicated keys in the master section.

The Studer Vista 1 also features a redundant PSU for peace of mind, and RELINK integration with other Studer Vista and OnAir consoles means the Vista 1 can easily share signals across an entire console network.

HARMAN’s Soundcraft Offers a New Expression: Pound-for-Pound (And Dollar for Dollar), the World’s Most Advanced Audio Console

FRANKFURT, Germany — HARMAN’s Soundcraft is showcasing its Si Expression digital console range, tagged as the most advanced digital console in this low price category.

Available in three frame sizes, Si Expression 1, 2 and 3 offering 16, 24 and 32 fader and mic inputs respectively; all three are capable of up to a staggering 66 inputs to mix by connecting any Soundcraft stagebox including the two new Mini Stagebox 16 and 32 (16 x 8 and 32 x 16) models also launched today at the show (separate release) or by connecting additional inputs over MADI or AES/EBU. All external inputs are additional to the connections on the desk itself.

In true Soundcraft style, the mixer is loaded with industry standard processing from HARMAN siblings BSS®, dbx®, Lexicon® and Studer® and many top-end professional features like a colour touchscreen, iPad ViSi Remote control and Soundcraft FaderGlow™, adopted from Soundcraft’s Vi Series large format flagship consoles. FaderGlow is a patented technology that automatically illuminates specific faders in varying colours according to their assignment enabling you to focus on the mix, not where signals might be.

An incredibly powerful DSP engine provides 4-band parametric EQ, delays, gates and compressors on every input, parametric and 30-band graphic EQ, compressors and delays on all outputs, as well as four Lexicon stereo effects devices, all capable of being utilised at the same time, unlike most consoles in this class. Soundcraft ViSi Remote allows remote control of the console from an iPad.

Freely assignable fader layers allow you to place inputs and outputs anywhere on any layer, optimising your mix control for the most important channels.

Andy Trott, Soundcraft and Studer’s Vice President and General Manager says this is one of the most exciting new developments in his 10 years running Harman’s mixer business. “A Soundcraft at this low price point is a departure from tradition for us,” he noted. “The Si Expression is based on new technology bridging the current Si Compact and Si Performer ranges and meets a totally new price point for Soundcraft making this product highly attractive to those looking for a professional console, at a budget price. Other companies will continue to produce ‘cheap’ mixers, we make professional, high-quality, easy to use mixers in the same price range—which makes the customer’s decision easier!”

The console is packed with professional features and a wide range of networking and option cards, the most recent of which is the BSS BLU Link card, also launched today enabling simple and automatic connection to the dbx PMC16 Personal Monitoring System.

Si Expression is designed for all mixing applications ranging from gigging bands, performance venues, installations and tours, corporate AV and theatres to houses of worship and education facilities.

HARMAN’s Lexicon PCM Total Bundle Inspires Smooth Jazz Artist Jonathan Fritzén

FRANKFURT, Germany – In just a few short years jazz pianist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Jonathan Fritzén has vaulted to the top of the smooth jazz charts. His latest release, Magical, has reached Number One on every major smooth jazz airplay chart. At turns easy-grooving, romantic, vibrant and always melodic, Fritzén’s music has captured the imagination of listeners worldwide. One of the most effective musical colors in Fritzén’s palette is the HARMAN’s Lexicon PCM Total Bundle, which includes 14 hallmark Lexicon Vintage Plate, Room, Concert Hall and other reverbs, and effects that run the gamut from Pitch Shift, Chorus and Dual Delay to unique sounds like Resonant Chords, which allows multiple delay voices to resonate on specific notes.

“I first became interested in Lexicon for a very important reason – the sound! As countless of my favorite records had Lexicon products as part of their sound, I wanted to find a way to incorporate them into my own recordings,” Fritzén said. “When the PCM Total Bundle became available it looked like the answer to my needs and I had to try it out.”

Fritzén finds that the Lexicon plug-ins offer musical capabilities available nowhere else. “They sound incredible – actually, I would say that these are the best-sounding reverb and delay plug-ins I’ve either used or heard, without competition. But more importantly, I also really like how creative I’ve been feeling in using them.”

“The flexibility and functions that the PCM Total Bundle provide inspire my artistic directions. The various plug-ins really feel like instruments in themselves, compared to other plug-ins that just feel like ‘plug-ins’ and don’t have the musical character that I prize in Lexicon.”

“In fact, in my experience the Lexicon reverbs and effects are inspirational in themselves,” Fritzén concluded. “This is something very rare when it comes to plug-ins.”

The Lexicon PCM Total Bundle is designed to work with popular DAWs like Pro Tools and Logic, as well as with any other VST®, Audio Unit™ or RTAS®-compatible platform. Compatible with Windows® Vista, XP and 7 and Macintosh® computers, it offers 14 unique Lexicon reverbs and effects, and hundreds of finely crafted studio presets. Its intuitive user interface provides control of key parameters with a graphical real-time full-color display and flexible sonic customization capabilities.

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Introduces Vertical Transporters for VTX Series Line Array Loudspeakers

FRANKFURT, Germany – HARMAN’s JBL Professional today announced the introduction of its VTX Vertical Transporters, three rolling transporter frames that facilitate the transport of JBL VTX Series line array models for portable tour sound applications. The new transporters include the VTX-V25-VT and VTX-S28-VT for the V25 line array speaker and S28 subwoofer, respectively, and the advanced VTX-V25-VTT tiltable transporter for use with V25. In addition, the VTX-VT-FL forklift adapter is available for use with either VTX-V25-VT or VTX-S28-VT transporters.

The VTX-V25-VT vertical transporter is designed to transport up to four V25 line array loudspeakers and provides a cost-effective option for transporting blocks of V25 enclosures that are used for the upper, relatively flat portions of a variable curvature line array. Supplied in pairs, two VTX-V25-VT caster plates or “transporter skates” attach to the underside of the lower V25 speaker via the V25’s built-in suspension frame hardware. The lightweight transporter skates provide faster, more streamlined operation than conventional transporter grids and a convenient sliding handle feature allows the individual VTX-V25-VT skates to be located on either side of the bottom enclosure prior to securing with integral quick release pins.

The VTX-S28-VT transporter functions in a similar manner as the VTX-V25-VT and can be used to move up to three S28 subwoofers in either front-firing or reverse cardioid mode. Conditioning S28 enclosures in blocks of 3 is ideal from a circuiting point of view when powering subwoofers using Crown Audio VRack12000HD amplifier racks.

The VTX-V25-VT and VTX-S28-VT vertical transporters can both be used with the optional, removable VTX-VT-FL forklift adapter. The VTX-VT-FL is compatible with either vertical transporter and provides two slots that enable a forklift to lift VTX-V25-VT or VTX-S28-VT vertical transporters loaded with four V25 or three S28 enclosures, respectively.

The JBL VTX-V25-VTT Vertical Tiltable Transporter is intended for transporting blocks of V25 enclosures that are used for the lower, high curvature portions of a variable curvature line array (typically the bottom four cabinets). A unique tilting system allows all four enclosures mounted on the VTT to be physically tilted by up to -45 degrees, facilitating attachment of the VTT enclosure block to the upper enclosures that have been previously suspended during the setup process. The VTX-V25-VTT features integral forklift adapter slots, locking tilt adjustment arms and folds down flat for convenient storage when not in use.

All VTX vertical transporters feature tour grade casters with locking brakes for secure, reliable operation. Optional, reinforced protective covers are available for all VTX vertical transporters. Modular VTX-V25-VT and VTX-V25-VTT covers are adjustable to accommodate three or four V25 enclosures and the VTX-S28-VT cover can be used with three S28 enclosures in either front firing or cardioid configuration.

“The new VTX vertical transporters make it convenient and easy to move and set up a VTX line array system,” said Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. “They’re a welcome addition to any tour sound company’s VTX inventory and we are confident that these accessories will significantly streamline load in/out and installation operations.”

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Offers VRX Loudspeaker Owners Advanced Design and Optimized Performance with VRX Line Array Calculator and VRX V5 Presets

FRANKFURT, Germany – At Prolight + Sound 2013, HARMAN’s JBL Professional is showcasing new software design and processing tools for its VRX900 Series Constant Curvature Line Array models, including the VRX Line Array Calculator and next-generation VRX V5 preset support for all non-powered models, complemented by JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ integration.

The new generation of VRX V5 presets provide significant performance enhancements with the introduction of bi-amp (2-way) and passive processing options for VRX928LA, VRX932LA-1, VRX915M models including 2-way and 3-way options for use with VRX915S and VRX918S subwoofers. VRX V5 presets leverage the BSS Audio OMNIDRIVE HD™ linear phase FIR processing capability of Crown® I-Tech HD DSP power amplifiers, providing dramatic improvements in on-axis and power response due to the use of higher-order asymmetric filters, superior sound quality through the use of arbitrary coefficient FIR phase linearization along with advanced Crown LevelMAX™ system protection. In addition, the refined tonal balance consistency across all VRX models introduced in VRX V5 is compatible with VTX Series and VERTEC® Series V5 processing, allowing VRX enclosures to be used as an effective fill system complement for portable tour sound / rental applications.

“As a compact, modular constant curvature line array, VRX is a unique product that bridges across Portable PA, Tour Sound and Fixed Install applications,” said Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. “Since VRX models share common component technology with several VERTEC models, they ‘play well together’ sonically from a sound design point of view and over the past several years, there have been many requests from end users to provide advanced preset support for VRX. With the release of VRX V5, I am confident that many people will discover an entirely new loudspeaker enclosure – the improvements are as dramatic as what was achieved in going from VERTEC V3 to VERTEC V5.”

HARMAN’s JBL Professional Launches Latest V5 Presets for VTX and VERTEC® Line Array Loudspeakers

Comprehensive support for use of VERTEC VT4886 Subcompact Series enclosures with Crown Audio IT4x3500HD 4-channel DSP power amplifiers is included in the latest JBL V5 preset release.

FRANKFURT, Germany – HARMAN’s JBL Professional today announced the introduction of extended V5 preset support for additional models of its VTX Series and VERTEC® line array loudspeakers. The new V5 preset release enhances a number of performance attributes of JBL VERTEC VT4887A, VT4887 and VT4886 line array loudspeakers and VT4883, VT4882, VT4881A, VT4880 and VT4880A arrayable subwoofers by leveraging the OMNIDRIVEHD™ linear phase FIR processing capability of Crown I-Tech HD DSP power amplifiers.

The new edition of V5 presets includes improvements in horizontal coverage due to the use of higher-order asymmetric filters, refined tonal balance consistency across all models and superior sound quality through the use of arbitrary coefficient FIR phase linearization.

“The feedback we’ve had throughout the V5 pilot program to date has been universally positive and I would anticipate that many end users will find the performance improvements for VT4886, VT4887, VT4887A to be as significant as what was achieved for VT4888 and VT4889,” said Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. “The sonic consistency provided by V5 processing will allow all models to ‘play well together’ from a sound design point of view and integration of new generation presets in JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ system setup software will allow for convenient system configuration as well as simple ‘plug and play’ operation.”

Key features of the V5 update are as follows:

• Comprehensive preset support for Crown Audio IT4x3500HD four-channel DSP power amplifiers for VERTEC subcompact models allowing for convenient system cabling options

• VT4886 1x, 2x, and 3x short-throw (ST) presets include low-frequency coupling compensation for one, two or three enclosures, respectively, providing nominal flat response with equal sensitivity regardless of box count

• Revised VT4886, VT4887, VT4887A long-throw (LT) presets with high-frequency pre-emphasis shelving characteristics that are consistent with V5 processing for all VTX and VERTEC loudspeaker models, providing sonic compatibility when VERTEC models are used in conjunction with VTX for fill applications

• New generation of downfill presets for when VT4887A, VT4887 and VT4886 are suspended below VT4889, VT4888 or VTX V25 line arrays

• Complete cardioid-configuration support for all VERTEC subwoofer models including VT4883, VT4882, VT4881A, VT4880 and VT4880A

Currently undergoing the final stages of beta testing, V5 presets will be available for download on www.jblpro.com at the end of April. VTX and VERTEC V5 presets will also be incorporated into upcoming releases of JBL Line Array Calculator speaker modeling software and JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ system setup software which will also include comprehensive V5-level preset support for JBL STX and VRX Series loudspeakers.

“The objective throughout the V5 pilot project has been simple—make great sounding speakers and make them easy to use. By expanding the range of JBL loudspeaker models that are supported in Performance Manager with the addition of STX and VRX enclosures, it’s safe to say we’ve surpassed that goal by significantly expanding the sound design tool box that our customers have to work with,” Bauman concluded.

FRANKFURT, Germany – In the first European install of HARMAN’s JBL Professional Marquis Dance Club Series loudspeakers, systems integration firm Fokum recently installed a Marquis system at the Opium dance club in Barcelona. The system was sold through Earpro, JBL Professional’s official distributor for Spain and Portugal.

The Opium, a combination club-bar-restaurant, is considered one of the premier dance clubs in the world, located next to the premium ARTS Hotel and near the famous “Bareloneta” beach. Its location, innovative design and high talent level of its DJs makes it one of the most popular venues in the thriving Barcelona club scene.

Naturally, the sound reinforcement system at the Opium needed to be on the cutting edge, fulfilling the requirements of the resident DJs and top-level international touring DJs, as well as the club’s customers. The club needed a sound system with high output on the dance floor, with limited distortion and high intelligibility. While the system needed to be powerful, it also needed to avoid creating discomfort for the club-goers. To this end, the Marquis Dance Club Series was agreed upon as the best option.

Fokum installed four super tweeter MD1 loudspeakers at the Opium club, plus four MD2 bi-amplified high power loudspeakers, eight MD3 15-inch low-frequency loudspeakers, and four MD7 ultra-long excursion dual 18-inch subwoofers. Powering the system are Crown Macro-Tech i Series amplifiers (four Crown Macro-Tech 5000i and four Macro-Tech 9000i amps. Sound processing is managed through BSS London BLU 100.

“The Opium owners were asking for the top sound system on the market, so we immediately recommended the JBL Marquis Dance Series,” said Josep Maria Aldoma, Director and Founder of Fokum. “We set up a demo together with EARPRO and the owners of the Opium were absolutely delighted. The best news is that, since the Marquis system has been installed, we only received positive feedback on this application.“

The Marquis Dance Series features eight impressive models, designed to bring a new level of sonic excellence to dance club environments. The JBL Marquis Dance Club Series incorporates new driver configurations and enclosure designs to deliver powerful, immersive sound with exceptional clarity and fidelity even at higher volume levels.

“Honestly, as of today there is no other loudspeaker that even come close to
Marquis Dance Club Series,” Aldoma added. “Of course there are other solutions available, but a specific solution for dance clubs with such a high performance level—that is only available from JBL Professional.”

FRANKFURT, Germany – At Prolight + Sound 2013, HARMAN’s JBL Professional is introducing its JRX200 Series portable passive PA loudspeakers, upgraded from the previous JRX100 Series and featuring an improved high-performance compression driver, an updated, more professional appearance and additional enhancements. The four models in the new JRX200 lineup include the JRX212 12-inch 2-way loudspeaker/stage monitor, JRX215 15-inch 2-way speaker, JRX225 dual-15-inch 2-way speaker and JRX218S 18-inch compact subwoofer.

“JBL’s JRX100 Series passive portable PA speakers have established themselves as the standard worldwide, heard in countless indoor and outdoor stages, clubs, events and venues,” said Andy Flint, Senior Manager, Portable PA Marketing. “With the introduction of the JRX200 Series, these industry-standard speakers are now even better, offering improved sound quality and durability, for professional-level performance at an entry-level price point.”

Every JRX200 Series loudspeaker (except the JRX218S subwoofer) now incorporates the JBL 2414H-C 1-inch polymer diaphragm compression driver, which offers better high-frequency performance and improved reliability. The 2414H-C driver is mated to JBL’s Progressive Transition™ waveguide, which provides constant beamwidth and directivity across a best-in-class 90° horizontal/50° vertical coverage pattern, along with smoother frequency response and a more seamless blend with the woofer.

The JRX200 Series loudspeakers feature a sleek, professional appearance highlighted by a new grille design and upgraded logo, giving the loudspeakers a look and feel on par with JBL’s stylish STX and PRX Series portable PA loudspeakers. In addition, the JRX200 enclosures feature a dual-angle 36mm pole socket for easy setup (JRX212 and JRX215), all-steel handles and a perforated steel grille. All JRX200 Series loudspeakers offer high sensitivity (from 98dB to 100dB SPL), enabling them to be driven to higher volume levels even with lower-powered amplifiers. JRX200 models include a host of additional performance features like SonicGuard™ high-frequency driver protection (except the JRX218S) and premium-grade crossover components and all JRX200 designs were subjected to JBL’s 100-hour torture test to ensure long-term reliability.
