HARMAN’s Crown Audio Introduces USBX at Pro Light and Sound 2013, Enhancing Control and Monitoring Through Wireless Connectivity of Amplifiers

FRANKFURT, Germany — At Pro Light and Sound 2013, HARMAN’s Crown announced the introduction of the USBX, an accessory that enables Crown XTi, CDi and DSi Series amplifiers with a USB port to be operated via an Apple iPad/iPhone using the “Powered by Crown” App.

“Our new USBX greatly expands the control options available to users of our XTi, CDi and DSi amplifiers by adding iPad/iPhone operation and wireless connectivity,” said Marc Kellom, Director of Marketing, Crown. “It’s perfect for setting up, monitoring and troubleshooting amplifiers in a wide variety of applications including small to medium fixed installations, mobile PA systems, movie theaters and other situations.”

The USBX allows Crown amplifiers equipped with a USB port to be controlled via Ethernet. The USBX plugs into an AC outlet and up to eight compatible Crown USB products can be connected to the USBX. The USBX has built-in Wi-Fi, enabling wireless control of connected Crown amps via an iPad or iPhone and the “Powered by Crown” App without the need for a separate wireless router.

The “Powered by Crown” App allows wireless control and monitoring of Crown Ethernet-enabled devices and JBL loudspeakers that are equipped with DrivePack® DPDA built-in amplifiers. Since this app uses the same protocols as HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™, users can import custom control panels from System Architect into the “Powered by Crown” App for added functionality. A strategic long-term commitment to Ethernet technology by Crown means that users have the benefit of this simple-to-use, cost-efficient program as well as seamless integration of their legacy and future Crown products through the app.

HARMAN’s Crown Is Now Shipping The New DriveCore Install Series Power Amplifiers

FRANKFURT, Germany — HARMAN’s Crown Audio today announced that it is now shipping its new DriveCore Install (DCi) Series power amplifiers. Successor to the company’s acclaimed CTs Series, the DCi Analog two, four, and eight channel amplifiers incorporate a host of improvements including HARMAN’s exclusive DriveCore™ technology to set new industry standards in sound quality, flexibility and efficiency.

Twelve models in the DCi Series are available ranging from 300 watts to 600 watts of minimum guaranteed power into 4 and 8 ohms and 70Vrms and 100Vrms. The first number in the model is the amount of channels and the second number indicates the watts-per-channel power rating. All amplifiers are just 2U rack spaces high, to conserve valuable installation space.

“We designed the DCi Series to be the new world standard for amplifiers in installed sound applications,” said Daniel Saenz, Business Segment Manager, Install Sound, Crown. “In fact, the DCi Series could be nothing less, considering the CTs Series established itself as the benchmark power amplifier for fixed installations. The DCi Series lives up to the task and then some and audio professionals worldwide will appreciate its greatly improved performance, flexible features, high efficiency and compact form factor.”

At the heart of the DCi Series is HARMAN’s proprietary DriveCore amplifier IC chip. The DriveCore chip combines the amplifier driver stage into the power output stage along with additional audio-signal functions – yet is about the size of a postage stamp. DriveCore and the DCi Series’ leading-edge amplifier topologies dramatically reduce size and power consumption requirements and yield much more energy-efficient operation that conforms to HARMAN International’s GreenEdge™ environmental initiative.

DriveCore technology dramatically reduces the footprint of the amplifier by replacing over 500 parts from a typical amplifier design with one single IC. Smaller amplifier engines means more channels can be put into a 2 RU box with more capabilities.

Crown DCi Series amplifiers can be operated into 8-, 4- or 2-ohm loads and offer direct drive “constant voltage” capabilities for 70Vrms and 100Vrms amplification without the need for a step-up transformer, yielding higher audio quality and more power available at the speaker in distributed audio applications. The amplifiers incorporate an exclusive Power Factor Corrected (PFC) global power supply that is designed to deliver maximum power in any country and their universal AC input accepts voltages from 100 – 240 VAC, 50/60Hz (+/- 10%).

The DCi Series is Crown’s greenest amplifier line ever, with a PFC power supply, a selectable powersave auto-standby mode where the amplifier will power down after 30 minutes of no input signal and consume less than 1 watt. In addition to the amplifiers’ balanced 3-pin input connectors and 2-pin terminal strip output connectors, a rear-panel AUX port enables the amplifiers to be integrated into control systems for remote on/off and amplifier fault monitoring.

Crown DCi Series amplifiers are built for the most demanding conditions of continuous professional use and carry a 3-year, no-fault fully transferrable warranty.

HARMAN’s AKG Introduces Revamped Digital Automatic Microphone Mixers – DMM6 and DMM12

FRANKFURT, Germany – Adding to its family of microphone mixers, AKG proudly introduces its new line of digital automatic microphone mixers – DMM6 and DMM12. With an intuitive user interface, numerous DSP functions and high signal to noise ratio (S/N), the DMM series provides users with the highest quality in automatic mixing technology.

DMM12 offers 12 inputs, while easily adjusting the mic to line level. Its four line outputs (2x stereo) are individually assignable for each input. The stereo record outputs are individually assignable, while the headphone out port allows users to listen to each input and output individually.

DMM6 offers six inputs and two line outputs at 1x stereo.

When in use, all inputs are active, but attenuated to a level that equals the level of one “active microphone.” If two or more inputs receive relevant input signals, their amplification is increased to a level, which allows overall output to equal one “active microphone,” resulting in an absolute feedback-stable system.

Working to deter noise pickup, the DMM series senses numerous sonic activities to monitor and diminish unwanted sound. If a signal is picked up over a long period of time, the mixers understand that it may be an air conditioning unit or other unavoidable noise. When a large number of microphones pick up the same signal and all mics are active, the DMM system will recognize applause and not react. When two microphones are receiving the same signal, the mic with the slightly higher level gets priority, while the other one is attenuated.

“AKG understands the needs of the live sound professional and the updates to our line of rackable mixers underscores our goal of providing high-quality, reliable sound in all performance spaces,” stated Thomas Giczy, Business development Manager, Installed Sound, AKG. “DMM6 and DMM12 embody the technological advancements AKG delivered with its original analog 8-channel auto mixer, AS8 and its digital predecessors DMM4/2/4. DMM12 and 6 will be a tactical addition to any installed sound system to ensure proper sound.”
