Adam Anders and Peer Åström Trust Genelec Monitoring to Make It Happen for High-Profile Musical TV and Movie Projects

— Music producers/composers for hit musical shows get the accuracy they need to turn tracks around quickly and precisely using Genelec 8250A and 8240A Smart Active Monitors™ (SAM™) and a Genelec 7260A subwoofer at their Los Angeles production studio —

NATICK, MA, April 23, 2013 — Adam Anders and Peer Åström are responsible for a lot of music among today’s film and television projects. As producing partners and composers for hit television series like Glee, from which they’ve landed chart-topping songs on iTunes, as well as credits – either separately or together – for shows and films including Hannah Montana Forever, Rock Of Ages, High School Musical 3, Evan Almighty and The Wedding Planner, the pair exemplify the word “prolific.” Yet at the same time, their work is precise technically, artistically and emotionally. In 2013, Anders was cited in Hollywood Reporter’s Top 35 Hitmakers, and his work has earned him several GRAMMY® Award nominations, a People’s Choice® Award and two Golden Globe® Awards. Åström has also been acknowledged with four GRAMMY nominations. In addition to their credits working separately (Anders with Backstreet Boys, Miley Cyrus and Ace of Base; Åström with Celine Dion, Madonna and Enrique Iglesias), Anders and Åström have partnered to produce hit records for artists such as Cee Lo and Christina Aguilera. To hit all of those marks consistently and to maintain their position among Hollywood’s leading music producers, the pair rely on monitoring from Genelec, the world’s longstanding pioneer in active monitoring, to make certain that they’re hearing everything that’s on the tracks.

Åström states, “We need to have a great feel for a wide variety of songs. Before lunch, we may need to get a huge Hollywood orchestra arrangement mixed, and after that, we might be working on an indie song or a Katy Perry top 40-style piece. So having an in-depth knowledge and sensibility about different genres is very important to us, and the Genelecs give us the detail that we need to get the job done.”

Anders uses three Genelec 8250A Bi-Amplified DSP Monitors for his L-C-R array and a pair of 8240A Bi-Amplified DSP Monitors for surround (both of which reflect the company’s Smart Active Monitoring™ [SAM™] concept, which allows monitors to be controlled with digital networking to enable the building of highly flexible computer-controlled systems of monitors), along with a 7270A Active DSP Subwoofers. Åström uses five Genelec 8050A Bi-Amplified Monitors and a 7071A Active Subwoofer, with Genelec’s SE™ DSP system to tune the surrounds.

Anders adds, “It can be very challenging to work with so many different types of voices on numerous styles of songs. With the limited time we have for each vocal, we have to know that what we are hearing is true to the real thing, and with Genelec, we know it is.”

Rome event to showcase strength of combined offering for visualization and training

A few short weeks after joining forces to offer the most complete range of projection solutions in the professional AV space, visualization experts Barco, and projectiondesign® will share two stands at the upcoming ITEC exhibition in Rome, Italy. At their booths, themed as “joining forces” they will demonstrate their combined offering for visualization and training.

As a key European forum for the training, education and simulation marketplace, ITEC has traditionally hosted Barco and projectiondesign as individual exhibitors. “Since Barco announced the completion of acquisition of projectiondesign in February, technology users will benefit from an unrivalled level of technical expertise and specialist knowledge of the industry’s most comprehensive and largest visual systems product offering,” explains Peter De Meerleer, Director, Strategic Marketing, Training and Simulation at Barco.

The two companies will therefore jointly host two stands at this year’s ITEC. Stand G100, the main stand, will showcase the breadth of the two companies’ newly combined projection offering, while a smaller booth at Stand G140 will be dedicated to Night Vision Goggle (NVG) simulation.

Maria Dahl Aagaard, Product Marketing Manager, projectiondesign, confirms: “The combined power of our two great industry brands means we are able to demonstrate an enormous range of solutions for training customers, from the smallest compact projectors to extremely bright and high-contrast models.”
Unrivalled visual systems product offering

Highlights on the main stand will include three projectiondesign F22 DLP® projectors operating in portrait mode and integrated with RSI Visual Systems Raster xT Image Generator to form a 4m curved screen for helicopter simulation with increased vertical field of view (FOV); a pair of Barco SIM 7Q HB LCoS projectors showing daylight flight simulation content, from CAE; and, several FL35 ReaLED™ projectors with solid-state illumination, also arranged as a curve to show armoured-vehicle content provided by Cursive Simulation using VBS2 software from Bohemia Interactive.

In addition, a pair of projectiondesign F35 projectors will be on display showing maritime content from Transas, a Barco SIM 10 powering a rear-projection setup showing very highly detailed images from defence and security company Saab; and one portable SEER 1 dome solution using a single projectiondesign F35 projector with an Hemispherical lens for specific JTAC training needs.

Also on display here will be miniature models of Barco’s RP-360 and CD-2260 visuals and Barco’s IP Video Systems networking image transfer, recording and playback products.

At the NVG Pavilion, a Barco SIM 7Q HC LCoS projector will demonstrate its exceptional high contrast and impressive black levels using SELEX Galileo’s VIR3x Image Generator System showing a helicopter night flight. A projectiondesign FS35 IR wuxga projector with dual IG input capability using RSI Visual Systems Raster xT Image Generators for simultaneous RGB + IR imagery that will show brighter night scenes featuring simulated stars, moons, explosions and the like.

On both stands, all screens will be sourced from projecta.

For years, projectiondesign has been a sponsor of ITEC. Again, this year, projectiondesign and Barco will jointly be the headline main sponsor of ITEC. projectiondesign projectors will be used in the show’s co-located conference programme.

Innovation Showcase and Exhibitor Hospitality

Clearwing’s Full grandMA2 Kit Takes Center Stage at ATV Dealers’ Meeting in Phoenix

When a major ATV manufacturer wanted to generate excitement at its annual dealers’ meeting, Clearwing Productions, Inc. turned to MA Lighting’s grandMA2 onPC command wing with grandMA2 onPC fader wing to program 70 moving lights and 48 feet of Color Kinetics’ ColorBlaze units and a grandMA2 light to run the show. A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive distributor of MA Lighting products in North America.

The meeting in the ballroom of the Phoenix Convention Center drew 1,5000 dealers to presentations, effects-filled product reveals, an awards ceremony and mid-show entertainment. The Phoenix office of Clearwing, which provides sound, lighting and services, includes a grandMA2 light, grandMA2 onPC command wings and its new grandMA2 onPC fader wing as part of its standard kit for live staging jobs.

“I’ve been using the grandMA2 light for the last two years and would never go back to another console,” says Aaron Hubbard, Clearwing’s director of business development and the lighting programmer for the dealers’ meeting. “The command wing system is typically our back up system. In this case we actually needed to program the show from the command wing because the position of the MA2 LIte desk was pretty far away, and with this small platform you can get right up front witch makes it’s rather convenient. “Running three touchscreens from the windows system using a simple USB>VGA video driver allowed me to use an un-modified user profile”

MA’s onPC command wing is a portable solution offering realtime control for 2,048 parameters in combination with grandMA2 onPC. Designed as the perfect hardware expansion to the grandMA2 onPC software, grandMA2 onPC command wing enables the look and feel of the software to be as close as possible to a real grandMA2 console.

Lighting designer Michael Murnane of Footcandles LLC teamed with Clearwing Productions, inc. on the dealers’ meeting. While the show itself ran from the grandMA2 light the wings remained on the active network as a tracking back up, Hubbard reports. “Until we opened the house, I had the command wing front and center in the ballroom for any adjustments and aerial positioning. I preferred to come down from my crow’s nest to use the wing and be at the center of the stage so I could see symmetry.”

One of the biggest advantages to grandMA2 onPC command wing and grandMA2 onPC fader wing is their portability. “They’re small enough to get into some interesting places,” says Hubbard. “We could move them up into the bleacher seats to program from that perspective. We could move them anywhere and program from that vantage point.”

In addition, “since the system is on a PC, I can use an iOS remote desktop connection app to control any functions directly from my iPad,” he explains. “Of course allowing me to ability to play back cues from the iPad is a huge benefit.”
