JD PRODUCTIONS TO INSTALL 32-CHANNEL API LEGACY PLUS IN NORTH CAROLINA STUDIO

SANFORD, NORTH CAROLINA – APRIL 2013: A new API Legacy Plus Console with Vision automation will find a home at JD Productions in Sanford, North Carolina later this year. The 32-channel console is being built by API with many custom features for the Raleigh-area space. The recording studio’s design is being overseen by the legendary Wes Lachot of Wes Lachot Design for well-known producer John Davenport.

John Davenport grew up in Sanford, where his passion for music soon took him to New York, where he learned the recording business from the ground up. When he began in the late 70s at Secret Sound Studio, he learned the craft from some of the best engineers and producers of the times.

John spent the 80s as a recording engineer at the iconic Hit Factory in New York where he worked with a variety of impressive acts such as the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, John & Yoko, Cindy Lauper, Judy Collins, and Little Steven. He received Platinum Album awards from the United Nations for Little Steven’s Sun City, where he was chief engineer. Now returning to his hometown, it seems John has come full circle, in more ways than one.

Aside from returning to his old stomping grounds, it appears as though John will also be returning to his analog roots. Being a former staff engineer at the Hit factory, John was trained on analog consoles exclusively. After a period in digital, he will connect with his analog past using the API Legacy Plus.

“The smile on my face is because, after three decades of working at professional and makeshift studios, I finally have the opportunity of building my own dream studio,” he says. “It didn’t take long to select my choice of console. API, the sound and workmanship, is like no other. Thank you, Dan Zimbelman (of API), Wes Lachot Design, and the craftsmen at API making my dream possible.”

John’s recording studio is located along the Deep River in North Carolina where he continues to develop artists and produce films. His skills as an engineer, producer, and artist developer have led him to the title of Co-Founder and Vice President of Music of JD Productions.

The studio will be built from the ground up as a 1,300 square foot space designed by Wes Lachot of Wes Lachot Design. “I can say that I recommend API consoles to my clients because they represent the very best in analog design and sound quality and always make the room sound the best,” said Lachot. “Very best sounding rooms are nothing without the best sounding gear.”

ABOUT API (AUTOMATED PROCESSES, INC.)
Established more than 40 years ago, Automated Processes, Inc. is the leader in analog recording gear with the Vision, Legacy Series and 1608 recording consoles, as well as its classic line of modular signal processing equipment.

HARMAN’s Studer Adds Automatic Microphone Mixing to the Vista Series of Digital Audio Consoles with VistaMix

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Unscripted multi-microphone live events such as talk shows, game shows and discussion panels suffer from both microphone spill and background noise. With each active microphone added to the mix, the overall sound quality deteriorates. The result is decreased intelligibility and unpleasant comb filter effects (phase distortion).

At NAB 2013, HARMAN’s Studer is introducing the antidote to these problems through a software upgrade for its range of Vista digital mixing consoles. Studer VistaMix automatic microphone mixing removes the need for an operator to manually adjust all the faders all the time, leaving the microphones of talking participants open, while closing the microphones of silent participants in order to reduce spill and background noise.

Without this facility, the reaction time of a human operator will often result in audible fade-ins of people who start talking rather unexpectedly. Also, changes in fader positions can quickly lead to disturbing changes of the total ambience/noise level in the mix.

VistaMix offers the solution by mimicking the action of a human operator: increasing gain for ‘talking’ mics and reducing gain for all others, but doing it very quickly and keeping the amount of total gain constant, so a clean live mix can be created.

VistaMix also offers the ideal solution for news operations when multiple mics are installed in the studio but the desk operator is not sure which ones will be used. VistaMix switches on only those mics that are in use. VistaMix source channels may also be mix minus (N–X) owners.

Each source channel has a weight control, which provides two possibilities:

Firstly, it allows the desk operator to add weight, or priority, to the main presenter such that if required he can ‘talk over’ the guests or contestants.

Secondly, it allows the desk operator to give more gain in the mix to any contributors who have weak voices or are too far from their microphones. The weight control may also be used during a show to adjust the relative balance dynamically. This function is set with the ‘Knob Assign’ control.

This significant new feature is available to all existing Vista systems with SCore Live DSP engines. By simply upgrading to software version 4.8 and adding the special VistaMix channels to the DSP configuration, VistaMix is ready to go. No additional hardware is required to the Vista surface, the new controls are fully implemented within the standard Vistonics™ screens and controls.

New Switcher Control Panels From HARMAN’s Studer Expand Control Of Console and Route 6000 Routing Systems

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – At NAB 2013, HARMAN’s Studer is showcasing a new range of low-cost hardware control panels for its Route 6000 and Studer Vista and OnAir consoles, providing single key cross-point switching, or the X-Y style operation often used in master control rooms or as remote source selectors on mixing consoles.

Available with either 32 or 64 physical switches, they can be mounted as 19”/2U rack mount panels or 190 mm x 80 mm DIN size modules for mounting in mixing desks. Panels from 3rd party providers can often be too complex for simple cross-point or X-Y requirements.

The larger 64-key panel may be configured to provide 64 x 1, 32 x 2,16 x 4 or 8 x 8 key per cross-point selection, or 48 x 16, 52 x 12, 56 x 8 in X-Y mode, while the 32-key panel provides for 32×1, 16×2, 8×4 cross-point and 16×16, 20×12 and 24×8 X-Y modes. The keys may be legended by inserting simple transparent labels under the transparent key caps.

Normally one or two panels may be connected directly to the Route 6000 or mixing desk. If required, up to 12 control panels may be connected via a standard RJ45 cable to a 19”/2U power and distribution unit. This unit combines the serial data of the control panels to a single connection to the router or mixing desk. Communication with the router or mixing desk uses industry standard RS422 protocols. These cost-effective control panels offer a traditional alternative to screen-based designs.

HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 Adds FaderGlow™ and Loudness Metering in Upgrade to M3 Model

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 digital audio console continues to meet the needs of broadcasters and live installations thanks to the future-proof upgrade path that the system provides. The newest version of the desk, the Vista 5 M3, sees the addition of the Studer FaderGlow™ system welcomed by sound engineers on the Vista 9 and more recently Vista 1, and integrated RTW loudness metering as standard, amongst other new features.

Studer FaderGlow allows faders to be color-coded via an led strip alongside the fader to indicate its function or channel identification, such as showing which faders control a subset of an orchestra, or highlighting the fader for a key presenter on a show so it can be instantly accessed. FaderGlow is also used to show additional fader functions such as graphic EQ to faders allowing the 30-band GEQ to be displayed and controlled on the faders. In this instance the faders glow red.

The integral loudness metering is based on the RTW TM7 touchscreen meter and provides a number of international broadcast standard metering types including bargraph, needle PPU and VU displays in addition to various loudness displays.

The Vista 5 can also be used with the new optional Vista FX system which uses Lexicon® PCM96 engines to provide up to 24 effects channels fully integrated into the Vistonics™ channel screens, and with the Vista Compact Remote to provide not only remote control facilities but also desk redundancy.

Another new software update for the Vista series including the Vista 5 M3 is VistaMix, automatic microphone mixing for games, talk shows and discussion panels. This highly intuitive system uses a clever gain sharing system to provide an optimum automatic mix that minimizes background noise and spill without losing the start of words in a fast paced unscripted production.

Other new functionality in the Vista 5M3 includes new channel metering, touchpad GC control, enhanced networking facilities and a parallel MADI/Cat5 interface for the monitoring links to the DSP core.
The Vista 5 M3 becomes even more of a central system controller with these upgrades, thanks to the integral audio router capabilities and control interface possibilities with video switchers via the ProBel protocol, and newsroom automation systems using the EMBER protocol.

Wohler RadiantGrid Previews New Video Process Pipeline at NAB

RadiantGrid(TM) Version 8.0 Will Enable Color Legalization and Offer Support for High-Bit-Depth Color

SAN FRANCISCO — April 7, 2013 — Wohler Technologies today announced that the initial release of the RadiantGrid(TM) Intelligent Media Transformation Platform version 8.0 will feature high-impact enhancements including full broadcast-gamut color legalization and high bit-depth within native color spaces. With these capabilities, RadiantGrid 8.0 will automate broadcast-gamut color legalization within the transcoding workflow and support up to 16-bit 4:4:4:4 YUV video while managing frame-level metadata such as field order and anamorphic aspect ratios. All enhancements will be available without expensive hardware or software upgrades.

“The upcoming upgrades to RadiantGrid version 8.0 tackle very diverse and difficult areas of the production arena. The ability to legalize gamut for broadcast within the NTSC and PAL domains in a file-based workflow ensures quality that allows broadcasters to take advantage of transcoding automation, and gives them confidence it will meet on-air quality requirements,” said Wohler’s Edel Garcia, vice president of worldwide sales for the RadiantGrid business line. “Further upstream, the preproduction and postproduction processes demand a much higher fidelity of video, often requiring capabilities for much higher bit-depth. Maintaining the native color space and fidelity up to 16-bit is essential for using transcoding tools this far upstream. Now true archive preservation and film-grade use of transcoding are possible.”

The Wohler RadiantGrid Intelligent Media Transformation Platform offers a highly efficient solution for transcoding, standards conversion, and audio processing in applications including loudness correction, quality control, and distribution of media. At the heart of the platform is RadiantGrid’s TrueGrid(TM) parallel-processing engine, which excels at providing faster-than-real-time content transformation, particularly for long-form content requiring multiple processes to be run concurrently.

Targeting users in the broadcast realm, the addition of gamut legalization options, which are now part of RadiantGrid’s “detect and correct” capabilities, assures that any input into the processing pipeline can optionally be legalized for broadcast upon output. Providing users with options, such as RGB only, RGB + Y (enabling EBU R103-2000 and DPP compliance), Composite (NTSC and PAL) domain, and other combinations, the RadiantGrid platform will fix the problem and deliver a transcoded output that is ready for air.

For film preservation and other applications requiring high-end video standards, high-bit-depth color support allows users to work in the native color range without compromise. RadiantGrid users can transcode content with confidence that the output will reflect original colors with the same degree of precision. RadiantGrid also makes these capabilities work in sync with the Cinnafilm plug-in available for high-quality frame rate management in a hybrid CPU/GPU environment.

“The best part is that this new functionality is not an added cost for the user and will be standard for customers upgrading to or purchasing the 8.0 version of the RadiantGrid Platform,” said Kirk Marple, chief software architect, RadiantGrid. “This new functionality will also be included in all Wohler file-based appliances and software packages where video transformation is occurring.”

The RadiantGrid Intelligent Media Transformation Platform will be featured in the Wohler booth, N3729, at the 2013 NAB Show. Further information about Wohler’s entire product line is available online at www.wohler.com.
