Dobil Labs Protects AV Systems at Case Western Reserve University with RackLink™

In business for 42 years, Pittsburgh-based AV integrator Dobil Laboratories has earned a reputation as a leader in providing intelligent solutions and exceptional service and support for the higher education, corporate and house-of-worship markets.

The company recently has been involved in an ongoing project to upgrade existing analog AV installations in classrooms at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Asked about the project, Dobil AV Sales Engineer David Rosenberger says, “We’ve been refreshing a lot of their older AV systems which isn’t uncommon given newer digital technology and the industry having evolved from coaxial to the twisted pair and IT world. We’re getting more into network switchers and control processors and we have to power cycle or reboot these types of devices, whether it’s a power spike or some of the more consumer-based network switches that don’t always cooperate with our systems.”

Fortunately, Middle Atlantic Products’ RackLink power management system has proved to be a valuable asset in coming to terms with these problems.

“RackLink is not only great for us,” Rosenberger points out, “but also a big help for on campus support because the CWRU technicians can go to the phone app and choose to reboot whatever piece of gear they want to. It’s amazing. The troubleshooting response time is drastically reduced and if something does go wrong, we can log in and see exactly what the problem is, for example, if it’s a power spike. That alone is huge for us, which explains why we’ve been including RackLink into every one of the systems we’ve been putting up there, and we’re up to 40 systems by now.”

Dobil’s classroom systems for Case Western Reserve typically include a Crestron Digital Media system capable of multiple digital and analog sources. These include digital and analog laptop inputs and a digital PC input that feed into the 8×8 Digital Media matrix switcher. A Crestron V-15 (15” HD touch panel) functions as the user interface that controls the entire system. Dobil also uses an Epson G5750 projector to get the digital 1080p signal to the screen and every room is connected to Crestron’s Fusion remote management software. Now each system also includes the protection, cost and time saving provided by RackLink.

Intelligent power management and monitoring with remote and local access are key says David, “because we want to protect our client’s investment in the high-end systems they’ve put into their classrooms. We want to make sure that we can protect against something as basic as a power surge or lightning strike.”

“These are existing buildings, and we have no idea what the quality of the AC service is,” adds Dobil CEO and President Don Rosenberger. “So that leaves us on our own to safeguard the equipment we install and ensure that it will work. RackLink provides protection and also lets us reset the router, the processor, whatever piece of equipment happens to lock up. All digital electronics are sensitive and don’t respond well to spikes, noise and surges. We rely on RackLink to protect the gear and cut down on our maintenance visits, which reduces classroom downtime.”

“Time savings also are important,” adds David. “Instead of having to send out a tech across campus, RackLink will show them that a certain room isn’t functioning or getting audio, or the touch panel in that room isn’t communicating with anything. Then they just have to log onto the app, reboot the processor or touch panel and they have a solution without the 15 or 20-minute response time just to get to the room.”

“These problems have existed for a while, but no one made a product with all of the elements in one piece,” concludes Don. “There were other units where you could recycle the sequence or the AC. There were filters and monitoring units, but no one put it all in one rack unit. We band-aided three different manufacturers’ units together but that was a clunky solution. Middle Atlantic has done it in one box with all of the stuff we needed and it works simply and easily.

“They’re the cream of the crop. Everything they make is of the highest quality. RackLink is a typical Middle Atlantic product, very well done, very well thought out and complete. It does everything right; there’s nothing it does poorly. It’s a comprehensive solution.”

GLENDALE, Calif. — April 2, 2013 — Bittree, a manufacturer of high-quality audio and video patching systems, today unveiled a new set of product builders on its website that simplify the product specification process. With just a few mouse clicks, customers can create patching systems that are tailored to their project requirements.

“Bittree is well-known for having one of the most highly customizable product sets — and indeed, our customers seek us out because we can provide the tailored patching solutions to meet their specific needs. Users can access the product builders directly from the Bittree home page by selecting products from video and audio patchbays. By clicking “Shop Now” in one of the product areas, users are taken to a page with all of the products in that series. Next, users can choose from a list of popular patchbays in the series, or they can select the “Build Your Patchbay” option, which allows them to select the options they need, including panel height, number of patch ports, and normalling method, as well as a range of other specifications. From there, the system builds the product based on the input specifications and also suggests accessories, such as patch cords, tools, and adapters that are suitable for that exact patchbay configuration.

Within its booth at the 2013 NAB Show, Bittree will feature a product builder kiosk that will enable users to test the new system directly from the show floor. Bittree’s knowledgeable sales consultants will be available to assist attendees with the new website’s various features.

Bose® RoomMatch® Loudspeakers Control the Sound for Austin’s Cedar Street Courtyard

Venue in the nation’s live-music capital was set to clash with its residential neighbors, but Bose’s highly configurable RoomMatch® system was able to provide extremely precise pattern control for great-sounding audio

n the weeks leading up to the opening of the Cedar Street Courtyard music venue in Austin, Texas, America’s live music capital, the venue was already drawing noise concerns. Due to its close proximity to residences and other establishments, Cedar Street Courtyard was looking to minimize its contribution to the noise pollution problem, and RoomMatch® loudspeakers and PowerMatch® amplifiers from Bose® Professional Systems Division were able to solve these issues by controlling the sound with extraordinary precision. Nashville-based consultant Steve Durr was called in to recommend a sound system whose sonic quality would keep it competitive with the city’s many other music venues, while at the same time keeping the sound highly controlled and away from reflective surfaces, and keeping the energy channeled within the venue and away from neighboring residences.

The Bose technology was exactly what was needed. Big House Sound was selected to install the system, which consisted of four RoomMatch loudspeakers: one RoomMatch RM7020 and RM7040 array module per side, each chosen specifically for the Cedar Street Courtyard’s dimensions, along with four Bose MB24 WR (weather-resistant) Modular Bass loudspeakers, all powered by three PowerMatch PM8500 amplifiers, all delivering 500 watts to each of their eight channels.

“The results were amazing,” observes Zach Richards, Director of Installation at Big House Sound, who says that the sound inside the outdoor music space is perfectly aimed at the audience and away from reflective surfaces that would let it spill out into the surrounding area. “The situation that this venue, this neighborhood, and this city found itself in is what made the Bose system a good solution. There are lots of new areas popping up where you now find clubs and homes in what was once a warehouse district, so there have to be ways to let them coexist. That’s what the Bose technology does – it lets us build a system that can help contain the sound without compromising its quality. The low-frequency control approach that Bose uses, along with the choice of 20 very specific coverage patterns in the RoomMatch line, lets us tailor the sound system to the venue very precisely. That means we can control the sound very effectively, and not just in the upper frequencies but well down into the mid-low frequency ranges. The Bose RoomMatch systems are incredible tools for the sound control and noise mitigation issues that are becoming increasingly common in cities, and especially in areas where you can have music outdoors 365 days a year, like Austin. Cedar Street Courtyard is now a flagship example of how this can be made to work in a way that helps make everyone happy.”

Sonnet Announces Fully Featured Thunderbolt Dock

Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock Includes Four USB 3.0 Ports, Four SATA Ports, Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire 800, Pass-Through Thunderbolt Port, Optical Disc Drive, and 2.5/3.5-Inch Internal Drive Bay

IRVINE, Calif. — April 2, 2013 — Sonnet today announced the Echo(TM) 15 Thunderbolt(TM) Dock, a fully featured docking station for Mac(R) and Windows(R) computers with Thunderbolt ports. Sonnet’s latest Thunderbolt technology product features 15 ports: four USB 3.0, one Gigabit Ethernet, one FireWire(R) 800, one headphone, one microphone, one speaker, one audio in, one pass-through Thunderbolt (for either another Thunderbolt device or an external display), two eSATA, and two internal SATA (one port for included optical disc drive and one 6 Gb/s port for a user-installable 2.5-inch SSD or 3.5-inch hard drive). In addition, the Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock includes an 8x DVD±RW drive, or optionally, a Blu-ray(TM) BD-ROM/8x DVD±RW drive with Blu-ray player software for OS X(R).

“Today’s portable computers deliver great performance, enabling people to work and play almost anywhere. Moving between work or school and home can frequently mean attaching and disconnecting multiple devices such as hard drives, printers, keyboards, iPhone(R)/iPod(R) docks, mice, networks, speakers, headsets, optical disc drives, and external displays,” said Robert Farnsworth, CEO, Sonnet Technologies. “The Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock gives users a simple way to attach to and disconnect from all these peripherals and more, using a single cable.”

With the introduction of new, thinner, lighter computers, manufacturers continue to remove interfaces and optical drives that were once standard. The Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock offers a simple way to restore FireWire 800, Gigabit Ethernet, eSATA, audio, and add additional USB 3.0 connectivity plus an optical drive to load software, import CDs, burn CDs and DVD-ROMs, and play DVDs and even Blu-ray movies. Peripherals are left connected to the dock using standard cables, while the dock connects to the computer with a single Thunderbolt cable. When it is time to take the computer and go, the user needs only to disconnect the Thunderbolt cable.

With the purchase of the Sonnet dock with Blu-ray drive option, software to enable Blu-ray disc playback on Mac computers is included. All models support the installation of a standard SSD or hard drive for backing up data or hosting a media library. For Mac users, this means their Time Machine(R) backup drive can be installed inside the dock.

Sonnet designed the Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock for maximum flexibility in use. The case may be set horizontally or vertically to save space on the desktop. Both the front and back of the enclosure include USB 3.0, audio input, and audio output connections to support the handy connection of devices such as a microphone, thumb drives, headphones, or a cell phone for synching and rapid charging. The internal drive bay supports the installation of either a 6 Gb/s SATA 2.5-inch SSD or 3.5-inch HDD, providing an ideal solution for adding storage capacity without having to connect another external drive and its power brick. Dual Thunderbolt ports enable the Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock to support daisy-chaining of Thunderbolt peripherals, and to be placed anywhere in a Thunderbolt device chain. The Echo dock also supports the connection of a Thunderbolt or display port monitor, or other display interface type with an appropriate adapter.

“The call for more mainstream Thunderbolt peripherals continues to grow louder every day,” added Farnsworth. “While ordinary docking stations are a handy solution for attaching and disconnecting common peripherals on a frequent basis, we saw an opportunity to improve upon the basic concept and deliver better value to users. In addition to the most-requested interfaces, the Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock adds an optical drive and the space and connectors to install an HDD or SSD — all in the same case.”

The Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock with DVD Drive (part number ECHO-TBD-CD-0TB) has a suggested retail price of $399.95. The Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock with Blu-ray Drive (part number ECHO-TBD-BL-0TB) has a suggested retail price of $449.95. The Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock with DVD Drive Plus 2TB HDD (part number ECHO-TBD-CD-2TB) has a suggested retail price of $499.95. The Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock with Blu-ray Drive Plus 2TB HDD (part number ECHO-TBD-BL-2TB) has a suggested retail price of $549.95. Compatible with OS X 10.8.2+, Windows 8, and Windows 7, all models are expected to be available by summer. Models without an HDD will be available from Sonnet and its resellers, while models with an HDD will be sold exclusively through Sonnet’s online store. Audio-Technica Products Shine at WKSU’s Main Street Studio

Audio-Technica, a leading innovator in transducer technology for over 50 years, is proud to be the microphone manufacturer of choice for the WKSU Akron News Bureau’s newly completed Main Street Studio. WKSU news bureaus located in Cleveland, Canton, and Akron, Ohio, along with the station’s main news operations housed at the WKSU Broadcast Center on the main campus of Kent State University, provide in-depth regional news coverage to complement NPR-delivered news reports. With the Main Street Studio positioned in the shadow of the Federal Building in downtown Akron and around the corner from the county courthouse and government offices, the opportunity for creating news reports of local, national, and international interest is significant.

The extensive Main Street Studio project involved retrofitting and soundproofing a first flooroffice in the United Building, including the supplementation of astandard street-frontwindow with a custom designed acoustic window created to eliminate street noise fromone of Akron’s busiest nearbyintersections. Inspired in part by WGN’s sidewalk studio in Chicago, the project creates an interactive environment bringing WKSU news literally to the public.

A total of five Audio-Technica AT4050/LE Limited Edition 50th Anniversary Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphones were chosen for the studio’s announcer position and four guest positions. High SPL capacity, along with the ability to reproduce accurately transparent sound from dual large diaphragms with rock solid element stability, made the microphone a perfect choice for this application. Five Audio-Technica model ATH-M50s/LE Limited Edition Professional Studio Monitor Headphones complement the microphone selection, providing both the production staff and on-air talent with the highest level of sonic accuracy, superior isolation and maximum listening comfort. The special 50th anniversary edition silver-colored metallic finish of the microphones and headphones provides a unique artistic complementary appearance to the other equipment in the studio, including the Axia Element digital control surface.
