FiberPlex Appoints Sales Force & Associates to Represent its Fiber Optic Line

With copper cabling now giving way to fiber optic strands to solve the high-bandwidth issues of today’s AV systems, fiber optic technology manufacturer FiberPlex Technologies recently signed on manufacturing rep firm Sales Force & Associates, Hollywood, Florida, to represent its line to the AVL industry in Florida and the Caribbean.

“It’s all going to fiber,” commented Frank Woolf, Digital Systems Specialist with Sales Force & Associates, an AV firm known for its diversification and expertise in the pro audio, lighting and video industry. “When you see the issues of copper being simply resolved (by fiber) in an elegant, way more efficient feature-rich fiber system, it’s hard to then hold your head high and recommend a copper solution,” he added.

The firm services every facet of the AVL industry, including designers, installers and integrators as well as production houses, rental studios and retail stores.  Its customer base includes Disney World, Universal Studios, Carnival Cruise lines among other high profile names.  Adding FiberPlex’ LightViper and myriad of other fiber optic transport systems to its AVL line card, along with FiberPlex design and support, gives Sales Force & Associates the technology needed to bypass many of the issues that come with getting large video and audio streams from place to place.

“The prices of copper solutions are going up and many of the fiber solutions are coming down in price.  Regardless of price, you just can’t do with copper what you can easily do with a FiberPlex fiber solution,” said Woolf.

“We’re experiencing demand for fiber optic products now more so than ever because of that cost factor, yes, but also because there’s just no other way to meet the delivery requirements of big data,” agreed Kyle Rosenbloom, Eastern Regional Client Relations Executive for FiberPlex.
“As demand for fiber increases, it’s companies like Sales Force & Associates that will ensure that it is installed and integrated with the systems and products needed to make it truly useful to our customer base of AV integrators,” added Rosenbloom.

NEON supports up to five live HD/SD camera inputs and can be controlled via Hybrid’s Ozone software controller or through BPI I/O production switchers, such as Broadcast Pix, Sony, or Grass Valley production switchers.

Rather than camera tracking and calibration technology, the Neon 3D virtual studio solution enables virtual camera movements in real-time from fixed cameras on set. Despite its simplicity, the 3D virtual scenes are photo-realistic and anti-aliased. Users can either use Neon’s set design tools, or import virtual sets created using 3D Max, Maya, Softimage, or other common modeling software.

Custom Audio Equipment Package Bolsters Musical’s Triumphant Return to Great White Way

NEW YORK, MAY 6, 2013—As Pippin hits the stage for the first time since its original five-year run on Broadway nearly 40 years ago, show Sound Designers Jonathan Deans and Garth Helm called upon Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, to provide a custom audio equipment package for the highly anticipated musical revival.

Roger O. Hirson and Stephen Schwartz’s beloved coming-of-age musical comedy Pippin returns to Broadway in an all-new production directed by Diane Paulus, featuring choreography by Chet Walker in the style of Bob Fosse and circus creation by Gypsy Snider of the Montreal-based circus company Les 7 doigts de la main (also known as 7 Fingers). The production is now playing at the Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street). Pippin is noted for many Broadway standards including “Corner of the Sky,” “Magic To Do,” “Glory,” “No Time at All,” “Morning Glow,” and “Love Song.” The production is nominated for 10 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival.

“Pippin is one of the great musical classics, and after 40 years we are thrilled and excited to be part of its first revival on Broadway,” says Deans. “Abe Jacob was the original sound designer, and he is considered the godfather of theater sound design. Therefore, when Pippin arrived on Broadway, we wanted to make sure its sound design received the full reverence it was due.”

Royal heir Pippin is spurred on by a mysterious group of performers to embark on a death-defying journey to find his “corner of the sky.” The original production of Pippin, directed by Bob Fosse, premiered on Broadway in 1972. It won five Tony Awards and five Drama Desk Awards, and ran for close to 2,000 performances before closing in 1977. This production of Pippin made its debut at American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) in Cambridge, MA, where Diane Paulus serves as Artistic Director.

Sennheiser Supports Cirque du Soleil’s “One Night for ONE DROP”

Las Vegas, May 6, 2013 – Recently, Cirque du Soleil presented “One Night for ONE DROP” at the “O” Theater, located in the Bellagio on the Las Vegas Strip. The one-night-only production, which combined talent and production expertise from seven other resident productions, was held on World Water Day on 22 March to help raise awareness on the increasing global water crisis. Audio specialist Sennheiser, which has a longstanding relationship with Cirque du Soleil that extends over two decades, loaned several channels of wireless equipment through its Global Relations team to help ONE DROP realize its creatively and technically ambitious production.
 
Established by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté, ONE DROP is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ‘ensure that water is accessible to all, today and forever.’According to some estimates, nearly one billion people in the world live without clean drinking water, while another 2.5 billion people lack access to modern sanitation facilities. In the show “One Night for ONE DROP”, Cirque du Soleil illustrated the fragility of the Earth‘s water ecosystem and the impact of water needs around the world in beautiful stage sets, breath-taking artistics and music to remember.
 
Building on Enduring Success

One Night for ONE DROP was planned to run concurrently to “O”, Cirque’s resident show at the Bellagio since its 1998 opening. Therefore the Cirque team needed to augment the existing Sennheiser wireless system to accommodate the additional onstage talent. Gavin Whiteley, Technical Manager of Audio for Cirque du Soleil’s Resident Shows Division, reached out to Sennheiser to ensure the upgraded system would perform flawlessly and would meet the stringent technical demands of the show. “Sennheiser’s product line is not only proven industry-wide, but also within our own shows,” Whiteley says. “It is a known quantity and we knew we could count on it. Krista Monson’s [director] vision was to have more live musicians onstage than “O” normally does, so that’s when we were looking to get those additional resources in the theater so we could achieve her vision,” he recalls.

Kristy Jo Winkler, Sennheiser’s global relations manager for the Americas, comments: “Our relationship with Cirque du Soleil spans many years and Sennheiser has always maintained a deep and meaningful connection with the performing arts. We were inspired to play an integral role in ONE DROP – firstly because it represented another chance to push our technical boundaries and secondly because it was for such a worthwhile cause.”
 
“As soon as we got the call from Gavin, Sennheiser’s Global Relations team quickly provided ten additional wireless channels – all racked and preconfigurated so it would be ‘plug and play’ for this unique one-night spectacle,” explains Dave Missall, national market development, professional systems, Sennheiser USA.
 
Reinventing the Fundraiser, with a Little Help from Their Friends

“Our founder, Guy Laliberté, wanted to reinvent the fundraiser the same way he reinvented the circus 29 years ago,” says Gavin. “One Night for ONE DROP was to be performed only once, therefore we needed all our systems to be incredibly reliable and trustworthy.”
 
The 90-minute performance featured more than 230 artists and performers from neighboring Cirque du Soleil productions, an original composition for string quartet by award-winning film composer Danny Elfman, a dance piece choreographed by Sonya Tayeh of “So You Think You Can Dance”, a special guest performance by certified platinum recording artist Jackie Evancho and many other creative acts.
 
Gavin wanted to build on the capabilities of the wireless system that was already in place while using the existing frequency coordination and antenna distribution system – which had already been laid, filtered and optimized for the operation of the “O” show. “We wanted to work within our current frequency range so we didn’t have to open the doors to any new potential RF interference,” he says.
 
To accommodate ONE DROP, Gavin says he had to roughly double his wireless equipment to support additional instruments, singers and speaking parts – including Elfman’s string quartet composition, which was being performed in public for the first time. “It was a balance of working within the limits of the existing system, but still fulfilling the requirements each show needed to do it right.”
 
According to Sennheiser’s Dave Missall, reliable wireless performance is a critical dimension of any Cirque du Soleil production, especially for One Night for ONE DROP: “Everything has to be completely in sync, and of course you can’t have a wireless monitor or wireless instrument system fail,” he explains. “The entire show is timed perfectly from the very beginning, so precision and accuracy of cueing is everything.”
 
Flawless Performance from Beginning to End

In addition to the “O” Theater’s existing eight channels of Sennheiser EM 3732-II receivers, Sennheiser provided ten more channels of EM 3732-II receivers, eight SK 2000 bodypack transmitters, four SKM 5200-II handheld transmitters and two SK 5212-II beltpack transmitters to handle the additional wireless requirements of One Night for ONE DROP. “We ended up using all of it – on instruments, clowns, spoken word performers, you name it,” says Gavin.
 
One of the highlights of the show, Gavin says, was Danny Elfman’s string quartet, performed by musicians moving fluidly across the stage. “We used the extremely small SK 5212-II bodypack transmitters and mounted them either to the instruments themselves or directly on the performers,” says Gavin. “They were ideal for picking up the sound of each instrument.” Jackie Evancho sang through an SKM 5200-II wireless transmitter coupled with a Neumann KK 104-S capsule. “We asked her staff what kind of microphone she’s comfortable singing with, and they replied Sennheiser,” he says.
 
According to Gavin, the system performed flawlessly as expected from beginning to end: “Cirque is known for its visuals, its music and its top level production quality for every show it has in place. One Night for ONE DROP was no exception,” he says. “From a sound perspective, we wanted to get more of the audio quality we were already experiencing in “O”, one of Cirque’s longest running shows. We certainly achieved this and everyone was more than happy with how good it sounded.”

NATICK, MA, May 2, 2013 — ABC-TV’s hit series Splash, which debuted on March 19 and immediately drew an audience of over 11 million viewers, follows 10 celebrities as they train and compete in regulation platform and springboard diving at dizzying heights in front of a weekly poolside audience. The show has more audio elements than many reality or even scripted programs, which makes it a challenge for post-production company Noise Floor Post. But the sound for Splash is going swimmingly, thanks to a 5.1 surround array consisting of Genelec 8250A and 8240A DSP monitors, along with a Genelec AD9200A Analog to Digital converter that allows them to use the 7270A Active Subwoofer with analog signal sources through the studio’s Avid Icon console. Genelec’s 8250A and 8240A both reflect the company’s Smart Active Monitoring™ (SAM™) concept, which allows monitors to be controlled with digital networking to enable the building of highly flexible computer-controlled systems of monitors.

Noise Floor Post Co-Owner and Re-recording Mixer Michael Solano, who founded the company with Partner and Supervising Sound Editor Ryan Owens in 2007, has been mixing television for 15 years, and his work can be heard on series including The Biggest Loser for NBC, Flying Wild Alaska on Discovery, and Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition for ABC, as well as Splash. He says the show is shot in front of a live audience, necessitating a lot of individual sound elements. “We’re trying to get as many microphone sources as we can and not just relying on the line mix,” he says. “We’re deconstructing that and recutting to make it a very engaging show from a sound point of view. The live components are what makes it unique – you have an audience around the pool and you need to reflect all of the action that’s constantly taking place.”

Helping accomplish that is a 5.1 surround array consisting of three Genelec 8250A speakers for the L-C-R array and a pair of 8240As for the rear surround array. This is bolstered by the 7270A subwoofer that’s used in conjunction with the AD9200A analog-to-digital converter. The Genelec AD9200A converter outputs AES3 format with 24-bit word length and 192 kHz sample rate, allowing Solano to control it through the studio’s Avid Icon console. “This enables me to use the control surface to do functions like muting and soloing as needed,” he explains.

The system benefits from SAM, which includes AutoCal™ calibration system, part of the GLM™ software package that lets Genelecs conform to the parameters of the room. “The GLM package is crucial for me,” says Solano. “The more information I have, the better mix decisions I can make, and the clarity that I get from this system in this room is spectacular because of the DSP system and the Genelec speakers themselves. I’m getting a level of detail that no other speaker has ever given me. I always know that I’m hearing everything totally accurately, and that’s critical on a reality show. The most important parts of any studio are its monitoring speakers, and I’ll only use Genelecs. We’re planning on converting all of our rooms to Genelec in the future. We plan to become an all-Genelec facility, because it’s taken us to the next level as an audio post-production company.”
