Mikkel Heimburger Forays Into High Profile Movie Trailer and Sound for Picture Projects with Antelope Audio Orion32

Santa Monica, CA, May 9, 2013 – Mikkel Heimburger is a sound for picture composer focusing primarily on movies, film and television commercials and advertising. During the last several years, he has successfully repurposed his audio career, having previously been an engineer/producer, focusing on the pop music scene. Recently, Heimburger has been working on several high profile projects. He placed a song in the latest Al Pacino film Stand Up Guys, and composed, performed and mixed the trailer score for the most recent Muppet Movie. Each day he relies on his Antelope Audio Orion32 audio interface as the cornerstone of his Los Angeles-based studio.”I was a creator of dance, pop and urban music just a few years ago,” Heimburger says. “But now I am producing trailers and advertising segments that are diverse and creative, but also more lucrative.” Needless to say, he is working in a segment that has become increasingly competitive and saturated. Heimburger says that to stand apart, he must ensure that his productions are ‘as good as they can be.’ Therefore he depends on his Antelope Audio Orion32 to help set his music apart.

“The companies I am pitching to often receive dozens of tracks in a day — I want them to remember mine not only for writing and performance, but also for sonic quality,” he states. The Antelope Audio Orion32 is now a key component in his set up: “When I first heard it, I was blown away,” he says. “It has what many of today’s other converters are lacking – punch. I really need this for the trailers I am working on, and with the Orion32, it happens automatically — it is just there and I don’t have to adjust the EQ or manipulate the low end.”

For Heimburger, the main differentiator between the Orion32 and other well known high-end converters rests primarily on sonic quality. “I’ve been through a half a dozen audio interfaces during the last decade, just trying to keep up with technology changes in the market,” he says. “When I A/B’d the Orion32 against the other units I had from other manufacturers, suddenly they sounded way too thin and overly sibilant. I also noticed that many of these other converters introduce a ’3D effect’ that just wasn’t true.”

In addition to raising the overall sonic quality of his mixing rig, the Orion32 has introduced workflow efficiencies at cost savings that was unexpected, but most welcome. “The Orion32 is considerably less expensive than competitors’ models — you basically get a 32 channel interface for $3,000,” Heimburger observes. “Other models typically cost $3,000 for 8 channels, and don’t sound as good!”

Having access to no less than 32 tracks of Antelope Audio conversion at the output stage has enabled Heimburger to employ creative summing techniques, which he says has led to increased fidelity. “I am using every single output on the Orion32, and having all these channels means I can sum my mixes the way I want. I use the Orion32 in combination with my Shadow Hills Equinox, which is a 30 channel summing mixer. This combination has made a really big difference as far as the width and depth of my mixes are concerned,” he says.

All in all, the Orion32 has earned a place in Heimburger’s studio not only from a sonic perspective, but also feature and price. “In my opinion, the Orion32 wins hands down in every measure,” he concludes. “I am pretty sure the competition will need to rework their product strategies.”

Canadian Duo Uses Yamaha CL Digital Console On International Tour

WorldStage Helps Celebrate Seven Generations of VW Golf with 3D Projection Mapping for Acclaimed 2015 WV Golf Reveal at the NY Auto Show

Hailed by many as the best reveal at the show, the 2015 Volkwagen Golf made headlines during its press event at the New York International Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Center. WorldStage was tasked by SIAM Productions and George P. Johnson with providing a 3D projection mapping system and other services for the unique reveal, which told the story of seven generations of VW Golf. Volkswagen later leveraged the reveal online where more than 29,000 people have witnessed the event on YouTube.

The stand-out presentation traced the history of the VW Golf from its launch in 1974 to the 2015 model that appeared onstage wrapped in spandex and poised on a turntable in front of a large screen. 3D projection mapping on the car, floor and rear wall showed the evolution of the car from a pencil sketch to a maquette to a production model. Then, a playful series of projections recounted the design aesthetics of the last 40 years, turning the VW Golf into a neon outline with spinning wheels, a vintage video game car, a pulse of disco colors, a puzzle of rotating Rubic’s Cube-like pieces, and a dazzling array of fractals. The screen behind the car displayed footage evocative of four decades of VW Golf and showed a timeline of vehicle design. When the presentation went dark crew removed the spandex, the lights went back up and the press got its first look at the 2015 model.

Spinifex, the masterful Australian company tasked with creating the reveal’s content, worked hard and fast to put together the stunning visuals, while the WorldStage team figured out the projection system, ultimately designing a nine-projector rig to cover the car, floor and rear wall. As it has in the past, the WorldStage team selected the D3 server system from it’s stock of media servers due to the complex mapping requirements of the project.

“D3 and Christie projectors are often our “go-to” combination for tricky mapping projects where we don’t have a lot of time to tweak on site. Using the pre-viz tools in D3 allows the content design team to see the layout with content in advance and it also reduces time needed for alignment on site,” says WorldStage project manager Andy Muller. “In combination with the Christie “Twist” feature, the D3 gives our techs a great deal of flexibility and alignment mojo during the set-up.”

Despite the flexibility and power of the system it was decided, due to the very limited amount of set up time at the Convention Center, that a full scale mock-up would be performed prior to load in. The mock-up, which took place in Pontiac, Michigan, provided the perfect opportunity to test content, projection angles and rigging positions prior to load in.

In addition to the projection mapping system, WorldStage furnished a three-camera HD package including one of their Ross HD Vision switching packages, a full-coverage d&b speaker rig as well as a new Shure Axient wireless microphone system selected to easily handle any interference problems from other wireless devices on the floor.

A production as successful as the Golf reveal is usually the result of a team that functions well and this project was no different. Between WorldStage and D3 operator Luke Collins, who flew in from London for the show, they made sure that Spinifex had all the information to build their content accurately. At WorldStage TJ Donoghue and Lars Pedersen headed the projection mapping team, Raul Herrera was media server technician, Michael Alboher EIC, David Lynd audio lead, Alex Donaldson and Juan Mateo projectionists and Richard Stucker camera director.

Robert Walker was the technical director for George P. Johnson, Lisa L’Heureux project manager and Greg Gilpin vice president of client services.

Company maintains competitive edge by making ‘under the hood’ improvements to LEDView530 and HQView530

Calibre UK returns to InfoComm 2013 with significant updates to two of its most important products for the pro-AV marketplace: the LEDView530 and HQView 530 switcher/scalers.

They have already found a loyal following among rental companies and AV systems integrators, and now Calibre UK has increased their appeal by maintaining its policy of continually updating its products during their lifetime.

Tim Brooksbank, Chairman, Calibre UK, explains: “We’ve given both the LEDView530 and the HQView530 a number of new features that really set them apart from the competition. These include the ability to capture an input feed to save as a custom test pattern, for display as a customer logo screen or as a backdrop when no live signal is being displayed. Both products can scale this saved image and will geometrically correct, warp, rotate and blend it like a live input, something our key competitors can’t achieve!

“Users can also now choose whether PTZ is applied globally to all input signals or is automatically saved and recalled per input channel per signal mode – a very powerful function for performing per-mode adjustments to aspect ratio.

“We have also enhanced the color calibration options with the ability to set R, G, B gains and bias (black level) per input channel and the ability to set saturation and hue per input channel, per mode. Unlike many competing products, these functions are available for all input channels including DVI, HDMI and 3G-SDI.

“Finally, both products have been given new ‘blue’ easy-to-read dimmable front-panel menu displays, with fast navigation via jog-wheel as well as buttons for direct input selection.”

In addition to being included as standard on all new inventory, all the above new features with the exception of the updated front-panel are available as free firmware upgrades for existing customers.
