Wyandotte High School Auditorium Gets Upgrade with Bose® RoomMatch® Loudspeaker And PowerMatch® Amplifier System

Steven Brown of Progressive Electronics and Bob Ledo of Coffeen Fricke and Associates, Inc. agree that the RoomMatch® loudspeaker technology provided the right solution for a challenging acoustical environment

Framingham, Massachusetts, May 15, 2013 – RoomMatch® loudspeakers and PowerMatch® amplifiers from Bose® Professional Systems Division are creating new fans at a fast clip. Leading Midwest AV systems integration company, Progressive Electronics, based in Raytown, Missouri, near Kansas City, has recently completed its third project using RoomMatch loudspeakers and PowerMatch amplifiers. This was the historic 1,500-capacity Wyandotte High School Auditorium in suburban Kansas City. The Bose RoomMatch system, designed by Coffeen Fricke and Associates, Inc. and installed by Progressive Electronics, consists of two stereo left-right arrays using RM5520, RM7020 and RM7040 loudspeakers and a center array using RM7010, RM9010 and RM9020 loudspeakers. These are powered by seven Bose PowerMatch PM8500N amplifiers.

The result, says Steven Brown, Systems Design & Sales for Progressive Electronics, “In a word, astounding! Everyone who has heard these speakers has the same reaction. They are simply the finest-sounding loudspeakers I’ve installed in over 20 years of doing this.”

Bob Ledo, Senior Vice President at Coffeen Fricke and Associates, Inc., the consultant that specified the system, points out that the historical nature of the auditorium and its lack of acoustical treatment made it a particularly difficult challenge, but one that the RoomMatch system was especially well suited for. “The RoomMatch array modules allowed us to customize the sound system for the room without having to affect any of the space’s aesthetics, because the loudspeakers can be so precisely aimed, letting us keep the sound off the side and rear walls,” he explains. “And because the dispersion is so precise, it also meant that the system did not need additional fill speakers other than several below the balcony. That reduced the potential complexity of the system, and minimized the need for any additional hardware, which was also important for keeping the historical nature of the interior untouched,” he adds.

As a result of its unique advantages, Brown says that the RoomMatch loudspeakers and PowerMatch amplifiers are essentially selling themselves. An installation that he did using them at the Rolling Hills Church in Overland Park, Kansas, has also been used to demonstrate the RoomMatch system’s superior audio quality to other clients and has led to other sales, such as the installation at the World Revival Church in Kansas City, where Brown says its new three RoomMatch array clusters combined with a RM215 four module bass array and multiple PM8500N amplifiers is routinely used at volumes of up to 100 dB several nights a week with absolute sonic integrity across the frequency spectrum. “When I first heard these speakers in a demo in Boston last year I was floored,” says Brown. “The sound was spectacular. Phenomenal. Awesome. Two of the projects I’ve used the RoomMatch loudspeakers and PowerMatch amplifiers on came as a result of just hearing the system at the Rolling Hills Church. The quality of the sound is immediately apparent as soon as you hear it. In fact, the Rolling Hills Church, which has a largely elderly congregation with many who are hard of hearing, said they have gotten letters praising the sound quality of the new system from the congregation, who are ecstatic that they can now hear everything clearly. The pastor told me that the system was a total homerun. Any time I have the opportunity to use the RoomMatch and PowerMatch systems, I will. I will expect similar successes from every properly designed system.”

NEW YORK: Sergio Molho, Walters-Storyk Design Group Director of New Business Development, reports that company co-principals Beth Walters and John Storyk returned from a recent visit to India with a pioneering relationship with leading Pro audio/film industry solution provider/recording engineer, Aditya Modi. “Aditya Modi is a 2nd generation audio/video/film industry professional,” Molho says. “Since 2007 he has managed Modi Digital, a successful technology sales/installation firm founded by his father, Vijay Modi – 40 years ago. In addition to his extensive business experience, Modi is an award-winning, creative audio engineer. Our agreement will see him working with us to introduce WSDG’s acoustic and architectural design capabilities to India’s thriving production community. We are extremely fortunate to be working with him,” Molho adds.

“We were deeply impressed with Modi’s artistic talents, his integrity and his social graces,” Beth Walters remarked. “He worked and studied in the U.S. for a number of years, his knowledge of and connectivity with India’s huge film and audio production community is unsurpassed. Technomad Expands PowerChiton Series for InfoComm 2013

Compact outdoor amplifier and “breakout box” series adds new model, more features

BOSTON, May 20, 2013
Technomad comes to InfoComm 2013 with new upgrades to its PowerChiton series of outdoor, weatherproof amplifier modules and breakout box accessories, giving end users and systems integrators more audio options for stadiums, resorts and other outdoor venues and facilities.

The compact and low profile of PowerChiton amplifier modules — available in four power levels up to 1600 watts — enables sound contractors to install the modules on light poles and other surfaces at any height for co-location with loudspeakers. A new balanced input provides customers with a choice of balanced and unbalanced connections, and three new integrated crossover filter options (350Hz high-pass, 85Hz high-pass, and 85Hz low-pass) allow installers to optimize amplifier performance for the assigned speakers. Filter options are selected or changed by moving the pre-amp-to-amplifier cable from one pre-amp output to another.

Technomad last year introduced the PowerChiton BreakoutBox, a companion product that enables local audio control at user-friendly locations in the same NEMA-style protective enclosure. Contractors wire the PowerChiton amplifier modules direct to the BreakoutBox, typically installed at eye level so end users can adjust volume and connect devices on the fly.

This year, Technomad introduces BreakoutBox XL, a deeper enclosure offering three expansion bays for use with up to three Technomad wireless microphones and/or custom Technomad Schedulon master audio playout systems. The BreakoutBox XL offers extra storage space so end users can lock and leave devices following an event, and adds a mic/balanced line input channel that combines into a single jack.

“The expansion slots allow customers to truly have a complete PA system for permanent outdoor installation while adding several integrated source options,” said Rodger von Kries, vice president, Technomad. “For applications such as athletic fields and resorts, audio systems can now be installed anywhere with power.”

Technomad will also demonstrate PowerChiton-integrated Apple AirPlay capability for iOS devices. This allows commercial and residential customers to wirelessly stream iTunes audio files and playlists to any iOS device in range within a PowerChiton amplifier or breakout box, reducing costs and infrastructure associated with traditional wiring and cabling.

Technomad will also show the latest design upgrades to its advanced audio loudspeakers, notably redesigned ports to its popular Noho model to enhance bass response. The new design reduces port compression and turbulence at higher SPL levels, and provides low-frequency output of +3dB at 85Hz.

Noho loudspeakers are available standalone or as part of complete Technomad Turnkey PA System with a powered amplifier, six-channel mixer, microphones, cables and more in a 6RU protective equipment rack. Mounting options include outdoor yoke mounts to simplify hanging, and Technomad’s recently-introduced stainless steel mount. Both are specifically built to survive long-term outdoor conditions, with the stainless steel mount able to tightly lock in Technomad loudspeakers from multiple fly points.

Technomad will exhibit this year at Booth 513. InfoComm 2013 takes place June 12-14 at the Orange County Exhibition Center in Orlando.

Thompson Square Uses PixelFLEX LED Curtain to Eliminate Timing Constraints for Small Tour Crew

Out on the road serving as an opening act for the Luke Bryan Tour, Thompson Square is using PixelFLEX’s unique, flexible and lightweight LED Curtains to enhance and simplify their live musical performances. The husband and wife duo was searching for an efficient way to add video components to their show and PixelFLEX was able to bring the band’s vision to life with its industry-leading video curtain walls.

As the middle act on the Tour, Thompson Square has a relatively quick window to set up and take down their entire set – 13 minutes to be exact. Still, the tour and production manager, Christian Easterling, was determined to figure out how the band could deliver the type of show desired in the amount of time allotted. Easterling soon came across PixelFLEX LED Curtains, which allowed for high-quality visuals without the worry of time constraints.

“We tour with four crew people,” said Easterling. “Everything is done in such a quick manner; there is no way we could have performed the show with any other screen out there. It’s just amazing to see how the entire set moves away in a matter of minutes and is completely gone.”

For the Luke Bryan Tour, Thompson Square is using 16 20mm curtains flown off trusses for use as a backdrop to further enhance the audience’s live experience. The screens are used to deliver static images, color changes and video footage to add some depth and dimension to the live shows, according to Easterling.

Easy to operate and set up – videos and images can be sent to the screen using any computer with a DVI-D connection – PixelFLEX LED Curtains are available from low resolution to high resolution, allowing users to demonstrate simple effects or elaborate videos. Flexible in all directions, PixelFLEX LED Curtains are able to bend and shape around structures for a more creative display.

“The benefits (of the PixelFLEX LED Curtains) are that you can manipulate it and move it around to different areas if you need to,” said Easterling. “Sometimes, we have been in venues where our trim height is not that great, so we can take the screen and move it to a different location, put in front of risers and it’s very flexible. It has a tremendous impact on the show and that is just such a cool thing.”

Easterling has been on tour with Thompson Square for almost two years and this is the first tour in which they have used the PixelFLEX solution. The additional support, thus far, has been well received.

“I hear on a regular basis that the walls truly enhance the performance; the feeling is that it looks like a headliner’s set,” Easterling remarked. “It’s been easy in, easy up, which is extremely important out on tour. Just as important, the product delivers exceptional results at an affordable cost.”

Alice In Chains Locks Up Clay Paky Sharpy Washes for National Tour

Grunge rockers Alice In Chains are in the midst of a five-week national tour, and Clay Paky Sharpy Washes are shedding light on 22 dates coast-to-coast as the band plays festivals, theaters and small clubs.

The band began their spring tour in Miami and will finish in San Antonio, TX to generate buzz for their upcoming studio album The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here due out May 28th – their first since 2009.

Main Light provided 14 Sharpy Wash units to lighting designer and director Marty Postma. “They’re part of the floor package for effects,” says Randy Mullican at Main Light. “We compared the Sharpy Wash to 1000-watt units and found the Sharpy’s intensity, size and feature set to be better. They’re a beautiful light in the right size package. This was the first rental the Sharpy Washes went out on for us, and A.C.T has been fabulous; their service and support has been stellar.”

Lighting Designer Marty Postma notes that “the whole show goes into one truck – everything. The tour is a lean and mean promo run. So I needed something that could work in all of the venues and not take up truck space. I can put four Sharpy Washes in a case and stack the cases, which is a huge advantage.” But it wasn’t just size that mattered to him. “I needed smaller gear with a big presence,” he emphasizes.

Postma likes how the Sharpy Wash lights “respond quickly and are easy to set up. I can walk across the stage with one in each hand – and they don’t take a lot of power.” He also cites the fixtures’ brightness and famous Clay Paky color mixing capabilities.

According to Postma, the tour started with 10 Sharpy Washes and “the band liked them so much that we got four more. They’re working great!”

A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive North American distributor for Clay Paky.

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “The Sharpy Wash units have taken this summer touring schedule by storm. We’re glad that Marty and Randy are pleased with the lights and we look forward to supporting them throughout the tour.”

DPA Microphones Goes On Tour With Priscilla

An Italian touring production of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical has arrived at the Politeama Rossetti theatre in Trieste, where audiences are enjoying great sound thanks to the extensive use of DPA Microphone’s 4066 Omnidirectional Headset Microphones and 4060 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphones.

DPA’s Italian distributor M. Casale Bauer has supplied the production with a total of 34 DPA Headset Microphones, which are being used for every member of the cast (plus a few spares). The show’s sound engineer Cristiano Grassini says the microphones are performing flawlessly every night and are proving very popular with cast members because they are so light and comfortable.

“The original Australian production of the musical specified DPA Headset Microphones and, having previously experienced the quality of these microphones on other productions, I was more than happy to use them for the Italian tour,” Grassini says. “Their quality is absolutely phenomenal. They sound great, they are very resistant to high sound pressure levels and obviously, because they are so small and discrete on the actor’s faces, they are good for the audience because they don’t detract from the performance.”

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert – The Musical tells the story of two drag queens and a transsexual woman who travel through Australia on a tour bus called Priscilla. Along the way they encounter many different people and have a variety of hilarious adventures. The musical first opened in 2006 in Sydney, Australia, before travelling to New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada and New York’s Broadway. Since beginning its run in Italy last December it has been to Milan and Rome and has notched up more than 250 performances.

“It is an amazing musical – full of colour and drama, and very funny,” Grassini adds. “However, it does involve a lot of costume changes and this is another reason why the DPA Headset Microphones are so useful. More than 500 costumes are used in this production and having a microphone that is comfortable for the actors to wear and very quick to remove does make it much easier to deal with the quick costume changes.”

Grassini has been a fan of DPA Headset Microphones for many years and has used them in numerous theatre productions in the past. “They always sound good and are just so easy to use,” he says. “In many situations they are simply ideal and, for me, the only microphone choice.”
