HARMAN’s JBL Professional Named Official Speaker Provider for The American Pavilion at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival

NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN’s JBL Professional today announced that it is the Official Speaker Provider for The American Pavilion at the 66th Cannes Film Festival, which takes place May 15–26 in Cannes, France. The American Pavilion is the center of activity at the Cannes International Film Festival for the American film community, offering membership for professionals, provocative and insightful programming, immersive student programs, the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase and more.

JBL is providing four CBT 70J-1 column loudspeakers for The American Pavilion, which is located within the International Village. Because of the CBT 70J-1′s studio-grade drivers and JBL’s exclusive CBT pattern control, the loudspeakers provide the American Pavilion with superb sonic fidelity and even coverage throughout the space. The system includes four JBL CBT 70J-1 column loudspeakers instead of the 20 distributed loudspeakers that had previously been considered.

The CBT’s “Asymmetrical Progressive Gradient Coverage” sends more sound to the far area of the listening space than to the close areas. This allows sufficient sound to reach the far listeners without overwhelming listeners that are positioned closer to the loudspeakers.

The very wide 150-degree horizontal coverage allows more area in the pavilion to be covered from fewer loudspeaker locations and to ensure that off-axis listeners still hear the same quality of sound as on-axis listeners. Two of the speakers are located at the edge of the tent area, allowing them to also cover the listeners on the deck, who were not covered in previous years. In addition, the low-profile design of the CBT Series provides the pavilion with world-class sound while maintaining a visually discreet appearance.

With the ability to cover the area with fewer speakers, the entire system is driven from a single powered mixer, as opposed to the complexity of a rack system. With the power available from the existing powered mixer, each speaker is powered with 125 Watts.

“We are honored to be named as the Official Speaker Provider for The American Pavilion at Cannes,” said Brian Divine, Director of Marketing, JBL Professional. “JBL has a storied history in cinema, and this year attendees at The American Pavilion can look forward to enjoying the powerful, immersive and nuanced sound that JBL is known for.”

“We are thrilled to have the cutting-edge technology that JBL Professional brings to the table, which will give our members a sound experience beyond compare for all our programming this year,” said Julie Sisk, Founder of The American Pavilion at Cannes.

HARMAN (www.HARMAN.com) designs, manufactures, and markets a wide range of audio, lighting and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer, and professional markets. DPA Microphones Helps UEFA Deliver the Roar of the Crowd

As every football fan knows, the roar of the crowd at a major game is just as important as the action on the pitch when it comes to truly experiencing the excitement of the event. With this in mind, Outside Broadcast specialist United chose DPA Microphones’ 5100 Mobile Surround Microphone to capture the ambience of the Amsterdam Arena when SL Benfica played Chelsea in the 2013 UEFA Europa League Final.

Huub Lelieveld, Senior Sound Supervisor for United Outside Broadcast and Studios, says: “UEFA was adamant that the broadcast quality had to be top class as this was a huge 35 camera production that was going out to broadcasters all over the world. We wanted to make sure the audio quality would be as high as possible and that we captured the ambience of the stadium in phase coherent surround so that it sounded huge in surround, but also still sounded great in stereo and even mono.”

Widely regarded as a surround ambience adder, DPA’s 5100 Mobile Surround Microphone was perfect for the task because its compact size and ease of use comes at no sacrifice to stunning sound quality. Ideal for bringing truly engaging surround ambience to sport events, documentaries and other ambience applications, especially for HDTV production, these microphones require no external signal processing and are versatile enough to be mounted on a camera or microphone stand, suspended, or simply handheld via a hand grip.

Lelieveld, in conjunction with his colleague Mischa Kortleve, tested the DPA 5100 microphone during one of the UEFA preliminary rounds in the Amsterdam Arena to ensure they were the right choice for the important Cup Final event on May 15th. The microphone was supplied by DPA’s Dutch distributor Amptec.

“We recorded all our microphones to multitrack and decided, after extensive listening tests, that the 5100 was perfect for the Cup Final,” he says. “The DPA 5100 was rigged in the catwalk of the stadium where it was able to capture the whole arena in surround. We complemented this system with four DPA 4006A Omni Microphones, which were hung from the catwalk in each of the four corners of the stadium, and we also used two DPA 4017B Shotgun Microphones positioned on our two Steadicams as these were smaller and lighter than the microphones we usually use.”

Based in Hilversum, Holland, United is part of the huge Euro Media Group that has production and post-production facilities in Belgium, France, England, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. United operates nine state of the art Outside Broadcast vehicles and mobile control rooms and provides broadcast facilities to capture major sporting events and live music concerts all over Europe.

“We were really delighted with the performance of all of our DPA microphones, but in particular the 5100 Mobile Surround Microphone, which sounded fantastic,” Lelieveld says. “It was incredibly easy to rig and protect from bad weather and was significantly less expensive than other microphone systems. Thanks to the DPA 5100 Mobile Surround Microphone, we achieved a rich, smooth and fully enveloping sound that was great in its coherence, channel separation and localization accuracy.”

For the UEFA Europa League Final, United provided the live broadcast feed to Infostrada Sports, which distributed it around the world. And for anyone who didn’t see the game, the final score was 2-1 to Chelsea.

WorldStage Teams with TBA Global on First Upfront for Gannett Company

When TBA Global was tasked with producing the Gannett Company’s first-ever upfront it selected WorldStage to provide AV and lighting support for the event at the AXA Equitable Building in Manhattan.

GannettFront 2013 marked the first time that all divisions within Gannett came together to highlight the company’s unique selling position and its evolution as a powerful media and marketing solutions company. The parent company of USA TODAY showcased all of Gannett’s brands to advertisers and media in a TV show-style presentation hosted by comedian Andrew Kennedy.

“The show was a little unique – Gannett is not the usual company for a typical upfront,” says Dave Longwill, vice president of production at TBA Global. “Gannett has television components and other news outlets, and they wanted to come up with a unique format to display their brands. So they asked us to create a TV talk show environment with interviews, one-on-ones, video interstitials and a Live remote feed from their Phoenix affiliate.”

TBA Global has selected WorldStage for various events over the years so “it made perfect sense” for WorldStage to support Gannett’s upfront debut, he adds. “We had four and a half weeks to take the show from a concept to a live upfront event, and everything worked out like clockwork.”

TBA Global’s design team created three styles of vignette sets with a large multimedia center screen and lots of plasma displays. “We had an aggressive one-day load in with the upfront scheduled for the next morning,” says WorldStage’s Michael May. “There were three cameras, one of them on a hydraulic pedestal. Multiple video feeds to audience monitors, the projection screen and on-stage scenic monitors were handled by our WorldStage flypack with Panasonic 450 switcher. Our new Yamaha CL5 console filled audio needs.”

WorldStage integrated its TV broadcast lighting package into the house theatrical lighting package for lighting designer Martin Graves. “We chose lighting instruments that had the feel of a live TV studio,” May explains. “We also supported the reception area with audio and lighting.”

“The WorldStage team did a great job,” reports Dave Longwill. “They really know New York and the venues and were able to adapt easily to on-site changes. Everything was very efficient; the cues and deployment were great. And the lighting package had a real rich TV studio look and feel. It all made for a very successful show.”

At WorldStage, Terry Jackson is vice president, director of lighting; Sarah Ibrahim project manager; Freddie Liberatore EIC; and Andrew Guberman audio support.

WorldStage Inc., the company created by the merger of Scharff Weisberg Inc and Video Applications Inc, continues a thirty-year legacy of providing clients the widest variety of entertainment technology coupled with conscientious and imaginative engineering services. WorldStage provides audio, video and lighting equipment and services to the event, theatrical, broadcast and brand experience markets nationally and internationally.

FUJIFILM Optical Devices Division to Show 4K Cine Zooms and Compact Cabrio Lenses at Cine Gear Expo 2013

Wayne, N.J. – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division will demo several of its latest products ideal for the film and video production community at the Cine Gear Expo, to be held at The Studios at Paramount in Hollywood from May 31-June 1. The company will be in booth #43 and will showcase its Premier PL 4K+ cine lenses and Cabrio cine/ENG-Style lens series.

The Premier PL 4K+ Series features the fastest T speeds available in a family of zooms, with unprecedented color matched 4K and beyond optical performance. The Premier PL lenses are available in 14.5-45mm T2.0, 18-85mm T2.0, 24-180mm T2.6, and 75-400 mm T2.8-T3.8. All four PL Mount zooms are similar in size and weight, and uniform gear placement and front barrel diameters (136mm). Focus, zoom, and iris gears are all in the same position—which speeds up lens changes, since follow focus accessories and lens motors can stay in the same position on the rods. Focus barrel rotation is a uniform 280 degrees on all four zooms.

Premier PL 4K lenses have been used by several acclaimed DPs for feature films including Oblivion and Iron Man 3.

In its Cabrio series, the PL 19-90 (model ZK4.7×19) and PL 85-300 (model ZK3.5×85) will be on hand at Cine Gear. These Cabrio lenses feature an exclusive detachable servo drive unit, making them ideal for use as standard PL lenses or as ENG-style lenses. The PL 19-90 and PL 85-300 FUJINON lenses offer exceptional optical performance with a 200-degree focus rotation, are equipped with flange focal distance adjustment, self-aligning servo drive, a macro function for extreme close-up focus, and coverage of a 31.5mm diagonal sensor. The digital servo on both lenses has 16-bit encoding, so operators can be assured that all lens data output is extremely accurate. Each lens can be controlled using cinema industry standard wireless controllers or with existing FUJINON wired and wireless units.

With a 19-90mm focal range and weight of only 2.7kg including servo motors, the compact PL-19-90 boasts the longest focal range available in a light weight zoom. The PL 85-300 Cabrio offers a longer lens that makes it ideal for shooting in demanding production environments, such as documentaries, wildlife and car commercials.

Cabrio lenses are being used in TV series and feature film production, including several 3D features currently in production.

“Cine Gear always provides a great opportunity to connect with our current and with potential customers,” said Thom Calabro, director, marketing and product development, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division. “The expo continually draws an audience of key decision makers in entertainment production, and we look forward to showing off our popular products and latest technologies at this year’s show.”
