Portugal’s TVI Launches Two New Channels on Snell’s ICE Channel-in-a-Box System

Installation Builds on Existing Infrastructure to Enable Fast, Cost-Effective Launch

READING, U.K. — May 14, 2013 — Snell today announced that Portugal’s most-watched broadcaster, TVI, has deployed the Snell ICE channel-in-a-box solution to support two new channels: TVI Fiction and +TVI. By installing ICE systems, TVI is quickly and cost-effectively bringing new channels to air. While the ICE systems enable fast expansion without significant changes to existing infrastructure, they also integrate seamlessly with TVI’s installed Snell Morpheus automation system enabling it to scale from a single channel to many complex channels, controlled from just one user interface.

“Snell’s ICE gave us a straightforward, easy-to-deploy solution for adding two new channels to our existing lineup,” said Carlos Gomes, head of technical department at TVI. “While our investment in ICE systems alone enables us to reduce the time and cost of our channel launches, we will realize a further benefit in the added power and flexibility that our Morpheus automation system brings to these channel-playout boxes.”

ICE is a best-of-breed IT-based playout system that combines what once were multiple racks of hardware into a single system. Each ICE has multiple inputs and outputs and includes two DVEs and eight keyers per channel mixer, routing and mixing functions, SD and HD format conversion, audio processing capabilities, and closed-caption/subtitle support.

TVI currently relies on Morpheus to drive playout for its main TVI channel, its 24-hour news channel (TVI24) and TVI International. The installation of the ICE units provides all the functionality that TVI needs to expand their flexible and highly scalable multi-channel system. In this environment, Snell’s unique FlexiCore architecture allows ICE to emulate the master control environment by facilitating reconfiguration of internal routing and supporting dynamic allocation of resources across all channels to meet operational requirements. Following rapid delivery and commissioning of its ICE systems, TVI successfully launched TVI Fiction in October 2012 and +TVI in February 2013.

More information about ICE, Morpheus, and other systems within the Snell product family is available online at www.snellgroup.com.

Riedel Expands Global Operations With New Offices for Benelux and Australia

WUPPERTAL, Germany — May 14, 2013 — Riedel Communications, provider of pioneering real-time video, audio, data, and communications networks, today announced that it is expanding its worldwide presence with a new office in Hilversum, Netherlands (just outside Amsterdam). Riedel has also opened a new office in South Sydney, Australia.

“Over the past few years, we have observed significant growth in the Benelux broadcast and event market,” said Wilbert Kooij, general manager of Riedel Benelux. “Therefore, the next logical step was to expand with a dedicated office here in the Netherlands. The office gives us the opportunity to offer very direct rental and sales support, along with even more thorough customer service.”

The new Hilversum office addresses growing markets and rising demand for Riedel solutions in the Benelux region. The facility will cover all sales, rental, and service operations. Kooij has been responsible for Riedel operations in the Dutch market for more than two years. The Benelux team also includes David Bouma, who will be responsible for the entertainment and event markets, as well as Christiaan Haasdijk as rental operations manager. Recent projects in that area involve the Dutch broadcast provider Dutchview and the Hilversum-based video service provider Parkpost.

Riedel’s new South Sydney office was opened in conjunction with the company’s five-year anniversary celebration in Australia. Situated in a 440-square-meter warehouse with a two-story office attached, the brand-new building offers Riedel customers a convenient location close to other production rental companies and broadcast/OB facilities and just 10 minutes from the Sydney Airport. Riedel Australia has provided solutions to Channel 9 Australia, The Canberra 100, Australia’s Opera on Sydney Harbour, The Maj theatre in Perth, and the Arts Centre Melbourne.

“Australia is home to Riedel’s second-largest rental division, which has staged events all over Australia, New Zealand, India, and the UAE,” said Cameron O’Neill, Riedel solutions manager, Australia. “This new office will allow Riedel Australia to grow with our existing and new clients. Now we will be able to serve their needs not only in the field, but also with appropriate training and pre-preparation facilities. The bigger premises will allow us to stock more of the equipment that our clients want, including wireless HD camera systems and fiber-optic systems, as well as more of the communications and two-way radio equipment that we currently supply.”

Sound Devices Offers Enhanced Recording and File Transfer Options for PIX 260i Users

Latest Firmware Update, Version 1.02, Now Available for Free Download

LOS ANGELES, MAY 15, 2013 — In an effort to continue to streamline workflows for production and post-production environments with its rack-mounted PIX 260i Production Video Recorder, Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, now offers expanded audio and video recording and file transfer capabilities with its newest firmware update, Version 1.02. Available as a free download to all PIX 260i users, this latest version will be highlighted at Cine Gear 2013 (Booth 94).

With Version 1.02, all drives are now formatted as exFAT instead of UDF. While this new drive formatting is available, it is still possible for PIX 260i users to record and play back from UDF drives for compatibility with the PIX 220i and PIX 240i. Users have the ability to set each PIX 260i drive independently to Ethernet File Transfer (Network) mode. This offers the convenience of transferring files over a network while the PIX 260i records new data. Drives will also automatically switch to the Ethernet File Transfer mode when full. In addition, the end user can now read and write data to PIX 260i drives over Ethernet. The update also enables the PIX 260i to provide users with both simultaneous recording to multiple drives or sequential mode, recording to the next successive drive as drives become full. A 10-second (maximum) pre-record buffer for the audio-only mode has also been added.

“The PIX 260i offers an innovative new approach to file-based audio and video recording,” says Paul Isaacs, Technical Development Manager for Sound Devices. “Every new version of PIX 260i firmware, including version 1.02, is the result of feedback from customers who have incorporated it into their everyday workflows.”

Based on Sound Devices’ PIX 240i portable audio/video recorder, PIX 260i is a rack-mounted, file-based audio/video recorder that seamlessly replaces tape-based video decks in production and post-production environments. PIX 260i offers 32 tracks of audio record and playback as well as control functionality from browser-capable computers and tablets. PIX 260i offers the features and tools that production companies and broadcasters require to migrate to file-based recording and playback capabilities. It records QuickTime files in either Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD video formats. Files recorded in these intra-frame codecs are ready for editing directly from the recorder in common editing environments, such as Avid, Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Premiere, eliminating time-consuming transferring and transcoding. For color-critical applications, the PIX 260i supports Apple ProRes 4444 through its 12-bit, 4:4:4 3G-SDI I/O. Users can also play out files from the PIX 260i for real-time applications.

PIX 260i users can download Version 1.02 by visiting www.sounddevices.com/download/pix260i-firmware/.

Sound Devices, LLC designs and manufactures portable audio mixers, digital audio recorders, and digital video recorders and related equipment for feature film, episodic television, documentary, news-gathering, and acoustical test and measurement applications. The fourteen-year old company designs and manufactures from their Reedsburg, Wisconsin headquarters with additional offices in Madison, WI and Highland Park, IL. Extron Fiber Optic RS-232 Inserter Now Shipping

Extron FOX RS 104Extron Electronics is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the new FOX RS 104, a four port RS-232 inserter for long-haul transmission of control signals to remote source and destination equipment over fiber optic cabling. Each port provides a bidirectional fiber optic connection to an Extron FOX Series transmitter or receiver for the insertion and extraction of control data, while maintaining a continuous pass-through link for video and audio. The FOX RS 104 is ideal for use in applications with a centralized control system that require the long-haul transmission of AV and control signals over fiber optic cabling.

“The FOX RS 104 provides system designers and integrators with a simple way to provide control to remote locations,” says Casey Hall, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Extron. “By embedding control data into the fiber optic AV signal, the inserter eliminates the need for separate control system wiring.”

RS-232 data from the Ethernet port is inserted onto one or more of the fiber optic outputs, providing remote monitoring and control. Reclocking on the unit’s buffered fiber optic outputs ensures signal integrity and transmits the fiber optic signal at its original power level. The FOX RS 104 maintains the performance of the optical signal transmission while providing bidirectional control from a control processor, eliminating the need for separate control system wiring to remote devices. Available in multimode and singlemode models, it is compatible with the extensive line of FOX Series extenders, distribution amplifiers, switchers, and matrix switchers.

ELAN g! Makes 269-Year-Old Farmhouse A Media Wonderland

If anyone needed proof that modern technology has a use in every home, a recently renovated colonial-era Pennsylvania farmhouse with iPad-controlled audio and lighting in every room through the ELAN® g! Entertainment and Control System puts the issue to rest once and for all. The installation presented a unique opportunity for Pennsylvania-based custom integrator World Wide Stereo, which was able to maintain the historic integrity and rustic charm of the 269-year-old dwelling while transforming the property into a modern media wonderland.

According to homeowner and interior designer Victoria Graves, her and her husband’s relationship with World Wide Stereo stemmed from his love for music, as witnessed by his collection of CDs that numbers in the thousands. When they first moved into the home in 2005 they met with World Wide to install the audio gear they already owned and to help rip their entire CD collection to an Escient music server. Shortly thereafter, Graves and her husband met with World Wide again to discuss a new multi-zone audio system.

As World Wide Stereo owner Bob Cole recalls, “The Graves’ gave us an opportunity to showcase new technology in a extraordinary setting. With Victoria’s guidance on design aspects, we were able to minimize the appearance of electronics through the home with the use of in-ceiling and in-wall speakers. The original ELAN Via system had in-wall touch panels, but with the upgrade to ELAN g!, now even those have been removed in favor of several iPads that can be carried anywhere in the home and provide complete control of every light and speaker.”

The home has seen a lot of renovations and upgrades since being built more than two and a half centuries ago, and according to Graves, this most recent update was never intended to be a start-and-finish project. In fact it’s been an ongoing project for seven years!

“The house is always a work in progress,” she explained, “and the guys at World Wide found that out when they showed up one day and the kitchen was gone! Luckily our renovation afforded us the opportunity to create a crawlspace in the home, which greatly simplified the electrical and wiring and provides easier access for future enhancement and upgrades. We have a home that’s older than America itself, but it comes with music and lights that we control from our iPhones. It’s definitely the best of both worlds.”

In addition to providing 13 zones of audio, with several outdoor zones, the home’s ELAN g! system integrates a Lutron lighting system that allows the Graves to set lighting scenes to match their current location, such as the “Dining” Scene which lowers the kitchen lights and brings up the dining room. It also makes bedtime a lot simpler, enabling them to shut off every light on the property with a single button when it’s time to turn in. The Graves use iPads for daily system control, and have only a single 7-inch in-wall touchscreen remaining in the home, located just outside the office study.

Matrox Maevex Demonstration at InfoComm 2013 to Focus on Video over IP Decoding Quality

Visitors can expect to see superb video quality at low bandwidth as they interactively adjust bandwidth usage from 100Kb/s to 25Mb/s using Matrox PowerStream software

Matrox® Graphics Inc. will feature the new Matrox Maevex™ 5100 Series video distribution over IP encoders and decoders at InfoComm 2013 in booth 4759. The Maevex products extend full-HD-quality 1080p60 video and audio over standard IP networks, with minimal bandwidth consumption, at a fraction of the cost of other solutions.
Matrox Maevex Video Distribution over IP Encoder and Decoder
"The single most-asked question we have encountered is: Can you show me the decode quality?" said Ron Berty, business development manager at Matrox. "At InfoComm, side-by-side views of the source video and decoded video will let our booth visitors compare for themselves."

The Maevex encoder captures video and audio from a host PC or another media source and seamlessly extends the signals to one or more Maevex decoders via standard networking equipment—switches, routers, CATx cabling. The H.264 encode/decode platform delivers excellent-quality video extension over standard LAN connectivity at user-defined low bit rates for minimal network bandwidth consumption. Matrox PowerStream software application is used to remotely discover, manage and adjust the Maevex network and lets administrators conveniently define multiple stream parameters and balance network bandwidth consumption.

Maevex solutions are used to drive dynamic digital signage in such environments as retail, restaurant, transportation, banking and healthcare. They are also used to distribute high-quality video in academic, medical, training, collaborative video wall and control room settings.

Zylight Demos New F8 LED Fresnel at 2013 Cine Gear Expo Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – Zylight, a leading manufacturer of innovative LED lighting solutions, will demonstrate its new F8 LED Fresnel at 2013 Cine Gear Expo Los Angeles (Booth 325), which runs May 31 – June 2 in Hollywood, Calif. Available in tungsten (3200K) or daylight (5600K) versions, the compact lighting instrument collapses to less than four inches thick for easy transport and storage.

Equipped with an eight-inch SCHOTT glass lens, the fully dimmable F8 maintains single shadow traditional Fresnel beam shaping, and offers a patented focusing system for spot and flood operations. Its beam spread is adjustable between 16-70 degrees for even coverage for widescreen productions. Like other Zylight models, the F8 is equipped with ZyLink wireless technology, which makes it easy to link multiple Zylights for simultaneous remote control.

While the F8 draws only 100 watts, it has close to the light output of a traditional 1000-watt Fresnel. It is also water resistant (IP54) for use in challenging location conditions, and can be powered by a worldwide AC adapter or standard 14.4V camera battery. The F8 ships with barn doors and yoke mount, but additional accessories are available separately.

“Cine Gear Expo is an ideal venue to showcase the innovative F8 LED Fresnel for the motion picture industry,” said Charlie Collias, senior vice president, worldwide sales. “We’ve replaced the traditionally hot and bulky Fresnel with compact LED technology. The F8 delivers all the performance of a traditional Fresnel but in a much more compact and energy efficient design.”

Zylight will also showcase its IS3c LED light, an updated version of Zylight’s acclaimed IS3 large panel cyclorama and beauty light, at Cine Gear Expo. Now shipping with a custom soft box produced exclusively by Chimera for Zylight, the fully dimmable IS3c is a wide, high-output soft light with built-in controls for adjusting color temperature, color correction, and Zylight’s Color Mode, which produces millions of colors without gels or filters.
