BrightSign to Unveil its XD Smart Menu Board at NRA Show 2013

BrightSign, LLC®, the market leader in digital signage players, today announced the BrightSign XD Smart Menu Board, an all-in-one, integrated digital menu board solution. Quick-serve, drive-through and other restaurants are aggressively migrating to digital menu systems, although many proprietors are deterred by technical hurdles, lack of creative resources, and other barriers. BrightSign is squarely addressing these pain-points by delivering an integrated digital menu board system that greatly simplifies the process of going digital, while simultaneously reducing the cost of implementation.

“Digital menu boards give restaurants a great opportunity to influence customers at the point of purchase,” said Jeff Hastings, BrightSign’s CEO. “By packing all the necessary components into an affordable, easy-to-implement solution, our new XD Smart Menu Board is the perfect solution for any restaurant that’s resisted the urge to go digital due to the cost and complexity associated with other less-than-elegant digital menu board offerings.”

BrightSign’s XD Smart Menu Board is the ideal solution for restaurants that want to freshen their look, enrich their menu content and more effectively engage and influence customers at the point of purchase. In addition, digital menu boards are quickly becoming a necessity as restaurants adapt to new regulations dictated by the Federal Menu Labeling Law that require calorie count and other nutritional information be disclosed on the menu. XD Smart Menu Board is a comprehensive package that includes everything a restaurant needs to quickly and easily convert to a digital menu board system, including:

• Full HD, commercial-grade LG display, available in 42- or 47-inch configurations
• BrightSign XD digital signage media player professionally mounted on the display
• Free BrightSign App to easily make content updates via iPhone/iPad
• Content templates developed with HTML 5 and tailored to the restaurant’s brand

BrightSign is partnering with Red Dot Digital Media to offer customers attractive templates that are easily adapted to match the company’s brand and restaurant motif. The restaurant simply supplies Red Dot with logos and other corporate ID assets and Red Dot creates a customized, branded menu system. Once deployed, the restaurant can update menu content via the BrightSign App on iPhone/iPad.

BrightSign will demonstrate its new XD Smart Menu Board at this year’s NRA Show in Chicago (May 18-21, booth #6076). BrightSign’s partner Rockbot will also be present in the booth, showcasing its innovative music-streaming service with BrightSign’s digital signage capabilities. The end result is a socially-driven music service that helps bars, restaurants and cafes drive patron engagement, increase promotional reach and drive additional revenue.

Pricing & Availability
BrightSign’s XD Smart Menu Board is available from the BrightSign store. Users configure the solution to suit their needs, choosing between the 42- and 47-inch displays, and selecting the BrightSign XD model of their choice. Distributor pricing is available upon request. SE Systems Uses New NEXO STM System and Yamaha CL5s at MerleFest

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Held the last weekend of April in Wilkesboro, N.C., this year’s MerleFest included a roster of longtime roots artists like Leon Russell, The Charlie Daniels Band, Avett Brothers, Del McCoury Band, Donna the Buffalo, Jim Lauderdale, Michael Martin Murphey, Peter Rowan, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. As locals know, the festival is named for famed guitarist Doc Watson’s late son, Merle, a gifted musician in his own right. Doc passed away in May 2012, so this is the first year he hasn’t graced the stage himself.

For the past 26 years, SE Systems of Greensboro, N.C. has provided audio production for MerleFest, and this year included a new NEXO STM rig shared and alternating between the main Watson Stage and the side Cabin Stage. The system consisted of 15 M46/B112 per side for mains, 16 S118 subs in cardioid mode per side, two M46 for front fills, and a three-stack of M46/B112s were used for out fills in the VIP area. A Yamaha DME64 digital mixing engine functioned as a converter from analog to Dante that was networked to all NXAMPs. 20 NEXO 45 N-12 line monitors were also used on the main stage.

“The NEXO STM system was very musical and even horizontally and vertically, states Chris West, front of house engineer at the Watson Stage. “The mix sounded the same on the ground and at FOH. The throw was incredible; we hardly used the delays.”

“The NEXO STM system sounded natural, even at high volume,” states Haley Miller, monitor engineer at the Watson Stage. “When dealing with acoustic music, the environment plays a large part, so a natural sounding system is always a plus. On stage it was quiet, and sometimes we couldn’t tell if the PA was on; the system allowed great isolation from stage to FOH with no bleed.”

Four new Yamaha CL5 digital audio consoles with Rio 3224 input/output boxes all connected with Dante were used on the Americana Stage for mains and monitors and at the Dance Stage for mains and monitors. “The overall impression was they sounded great,” states Myron Surber, Sales Associate, SE Systems. “The preamps were warm and the Premium Rack was a real plus with delays on the input channels and the additional 1/3 octave EQs.”

“The Yamaha CL5 is a great improvement on previous Yamaha consoles having mixed on both the PM5D and M7CL in festival situations,” states Josh Berneking, who mixed front of house for all the acts on the Americana Stage. “The CL5 is much better in that situation. The new premium rack plug-ins, especially the Rupert Neve EQ and Compressor, sound great. I also like the increased naming and labeling capabilities; and color-coding my channels was a huge help at the festival. I also found that it was similar enough in navigation to the M7s that guest engineers walking up to the consoles having no experience were able to jump right in on the desk and mix on the fly with very little help from me. The Dante network and stage boxes worked great; they were very easy to patch on, and setup. We were also able to connect my talkback mic to the monitor console through Dante.” Jeff Neubauer mixed monitors on the Americana Stage.

“The console sounded great and was sonically very clean,” states Todd Dupree who mixed monitors on the Dance Stage. “We had two Rio boxes on our stage; they are great devices, well made, and solid. The indicator lights for signal, peaking, 48v, and the Ping feature worked great in the frantic festival setting.” John Adair mixed front of house at Dance Stage.

Christie Continues To Lead The Way In Visual Display System Education For Simulation

Christie will host the fourth SIM University training forum May 7-8 at the University of Central Florida

Christie®, a leader in simulation projection display solutions, today announced that it is hosting the fourth SIM University training forum, a free educational event taking place May 7-8 dedicated to the world of visual display requirements for the simulation industry at the Institute for Simulation and Training at the University of Central Florida.

Zoran Veselic, vice president of Christie’s Visual Environments, commented: “The capabilities and requirements of visual displays in the simulation industry are not only complex, but continuously advancing. Bringing together experts and participants in this field by way of an educational forum enables personnel such as visual, systems or design engineers and program managers to gain a more in-depth understanding of system parameters and metrics, for instance, and be better equipped to specify technology that will successfully meet system requirements. The event also expands our own knowledge of industry needs and priorities so that we can adapt and create new solutions for our customers.”

Based on participants’ feedback and positive responses, Christie will introduce a new format, which extends the event to one-and-a-half days. The first part is a half day that is dedicated to understanding the basics of display technology and is designed for those with entry-level experience in visual display systems for simulation or those interested in a refresher on display technology. Day two is focused on intermediate and advanced subject matter content or for anyone who attends the half-day session the day prior.

Joining Christie’s engineers and technical staff in presenting at SIM University are other leading organizations in the field of visual technology displays for simulation including Flight Safety International, a world-leading aviation training company, RealTime Immersive, Inc. a simulation and serious games studio established to support CryENGINE® licensees in the serious game and simulation market space and Thinklogical LLC, a global manufacturer of secure fiber optic video and KVM routing and extension systems.

Whether participants are visual, systems, or product design engineers, program managers or technical specialists in the simulation industry, they will benefit from this one or two-day session that includes technical presentations designed to increase one’s knowledge of various visual display requirements: color and latency, warping, night vision goggle stimulation principles and practices, and collimation, field of view and viewing volume in simulators, to name a few.

Specialists in simulation and training interested in learning more or signing up for the next SIM University can email the SIM University team.

Christie Solaria Series Projectors Light Up the Warner Bros. World Premiere of “The Great Gatsby” in 3D at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City

The highly anticipated world premiere of Warner Bros. “The Great Gatsby” lit up the screen in brilliant 3D, thanks to Christie Solaria® Series digital cinema projectors, which brought to life the splendor of the roaring twenties in rich, saturated colors and sharp, 4K-resolution. The star-studded event took place at Avery Fisher Hall, an iconic New York City venue at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the film is based on the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. on May 10. The event was a glamorous evening worthy of the film’s 1920s setting, featuring an audience filled with the film’s stars—Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Isla Fisher, Joel Edgerton, and Carey Mulligan. A host of other A-list celebrities, including Jay-Z and Jake Gyllenhaal, also made appearances at the red carpet event.

“Christie is thrilled to have projected the world premiere of ‘The Great Gatsby’, a long-awaited movie based on one of the most beloved literary classics,” said Craig Sholder, vice president, Entertainment Solutions, Christie. “As a trusted leader in digital cinema projection, we were pleased that that our projectors displayed all the splendor and opulence of ‘The Great Gatsby,’ fully realized in 3D!”

Preferred Christie® dealer Digital Media Systems selected two top-of-the-line Christie CP4230 DLP® digital cinema projectors for the screening, which converged the light from two projectors to create a seamless image projected onto a silver screen. Gregg Paliotta, president and owner of Digital Media Systems, said that this 4K Christie solution was the only choice for providing the brilliant 3D images needed.

“We have done other major premieres at Avery Fisher Hall in the past, such as ‘Hugo’ and ‘War Horse,’ so Warner Bros. and Lincoln Center trusted us and Christie to deliver the high brightness and absolutely flawless picture quality needed to screen this major studio event,” said Paliotta. “The Christie projectors always perform to our expectations, and ‘The Great Gatsby’ premiere was no exception. We are proud to be an exclusive Christie dealer for that reason.”

DPA Microphones Opens A New Office In Hong Kong

Following a record year for sales in the Asia and Pacific regions, DPA Microphones is consolidating its success by opening a new regional office in Hong Kong.

Headed by Ken Kimura, DPA’s general manager for the APAC region, the new office signals DPA’s commitment to its partners and customers by acting as a hub for sales, marketing and after-sales service. It will also enable the company to expand its sales network and develop new business channels in market sectors that have yet to discover the benefit of DPA’s high quality microphone technology and products.

Kimura, who was previously based in Shanghai, says: “Establishing our new office in Hong Kong makes sound economic and geographic sense. By basing our office here we can significantly expand our reach as well as visibility within the entire region and thereby aim our ambitions much higher.”

During the last trading year, DPA’s sales have been on the increase in virtually every APAC country with some showing growth as high as 40%. This incredible success has been achieved by DPA developing strong partnerships with its distributors and dealers so that they can fully support their customers.

Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones, says: “The increased consciousness of good quality in the Asian markets, combined with our ability to develop fantastic products, has resulted in our huge success in this region. To follow up on this we take the next important step by establishing this new office to support our sales partners even more and encourage their commitment to the brand. This support has been delivered in a variety of ways, including listening to our partners’ needs and implementing specific activities such as customer events.”

Renowned for their audio accuracy, reliability and superb engineering, DPA microphones are the first choice for numerous recording and touring artists and sound engineers. The company’s extensive product range also encompasses many other industry areas including broadcast, film, theatre, installation, conferencing and security.

“The breadth and depth of our product range is really quite staggering and gives us plenty of scope to develop our customer base around the world,” Kimura says. “The APAC region is no exception – there are many applications for our technology that have yet to be exploited and our aim is to be highly visible so that we can make the most of these new business opportunities.”

DPA plans to supplement its existing team in Hong Kong with new sales staff and is interested in hearing from any suitable candidates.

DPA Microphones Introduces The New d:dicate™ Recording Microphone Range

DPA Microphones is delighted to announce the launch of the d:dicate™ Recording Microphone range, which combines the best capsules with the best pre-amplifiers to deliver superior sound for all applications where high quality audio is required.

The d:dicate range includes DPA’s new modular MMC4018 supercardioid capsule, the counterpart to the MMC4018V capsule used in the company’s new d:facto™ Vocal Microphone and one that is ideally suited to applications where clarity and audio quality are critical. d:dicate also includes the well-known MMC4007 hi-SPL omnidirectional capsule, previously known as 4007, now in a modular version. Widely used for measurement purposes, this capsule has an unbeatable dynamic range and can handle extremely high sound pressure levels. Both capsules is widely used for picking up drums, percussion, brass instruments – and for measurement purposes. Both are entirely compatible with other d:dicate preamplifiers.

Completing the d:dicate line-up are microphones from the familiar and well-loved DPA Reference Standard series, which has been absorbed into the d:dicate range with all former Reference Standard products now carrying d:dicate branding. These include the modular 4000 and 2000 series, which are manufactured to perform within very narrow tolerances and offer exceptional linear frequency responses, high SPL and superior gain before feedback. Within the 4000 series there are a wide variety of capsules including the new 4018 supercardiod, 4017 shotgun, 4015 wide cardioid, 4011 cardioid and 4006 omnidirectional. The 2000 series consists of two twin diaphragm capsules – the 2011 cardioid and the 2006 omni versions that are rooted in the design technology of DPA’s classic miniature capsules. All these capsules can be combined with a state-of-the-art A pre-amp, a B pre-amp with low cut and high boost filters, and a C pre-amp, which is a compact version for discreet miking.

Like all DPA microphones, every variant in the d:dicate range delivers clear, transparent and precise sound, along with the robustness and versatility that are the hallmarks of DPA’s ingenious engineering techniques. These high quality microphones are increasingly being employed in harsh live sound environments, particularly on drum kits where there is a demand for exceptional sound quality but where the microphones solution needs to be robust and sturdy so that it can be relied on time after time.

Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones, says: “Our new d:dicate Recording Microphone range gives customers the ultimate in flexibility as any microphone in the range can easily be transformed into a new variant simply by choosing a different capsule or preamplifier. Customers will also find that owning several capsules is more cost effective than purchasing a completely new microphone.

“By gathering these microphones into a specific group, d:dicate now joins our other established product groups: d:fine™ Headset Microphones, d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones and d:facto™ Vocal Microphones.”

New accessories have also been developed for the d:dicate Recording Microphone range, including modular active cables (MMP-ER with rear cable entry and MMP-ES with side cable entry) plus modular active booms (MMP-F) that are compatible with all d:dicate capsules. These new microphone solutions can be used in many different situations, for example as a podium microphone on a desktop or podium, suspended for high-end capture or on elegant stage stands. The active booms come in several lengths and configurations with flexible gooseneck and XLR termination, while the new active cable only adds a centimetre to the capsule, making it even more discreet than the compact C pre-amp, while giving comparable performance.

“It was difficult to split the preamplifier construction and make an ultra-compact head without sacrificing the sound quality,” Christian Poulsen adds. “However, we succeeded and now customers can have DPA’s renowned sound quality across many applications where we have not been widely used before, for example installation, concert halls, on stage, etc.”

The two new capsules and new accessories in DPA’s d:dicate Recording Microphones range will be available from August 2013. Former Reference Standard capsules and preamplifiers now included in the d:dicate range are available now.

FiberPlex Appoints Sales Force & Associates to Represent its Fiber Optic Line

With copper cabling now giving way to fiber optic strands to solve the high-bandwidth issues of today’s AV systems, fiber optic technology manufacturer FiberPlex Technologies recently signed on manufacturing rep firm Sales Force & Associates, Hollywood, Florida, to represent its line to the AVL industry in Florida and the Caribbean.

“It’s all going to fiber,” commented Frank Woolf, Digital Systems Specialist with Sales Force & Associates, an AV firm known for its diversification and expertise in the pro audio, lighting and video industry. “When you see the issues of copper being simply resolved (by fiber) in an elegant, way more efficient feature-rich fiber system, it’s hard to then hold your head high and recommend a copper solution,” he added.

The firm services every facet of the AVL industry, including designers, installers and integrators as well as production houses, rental studios and retail stores.  Its customer base includes Disney World, Universal Studios, Carnival Cruise lines among other high profile names.  Adding FiberPlex’ LightViper and myriad of other fiber optic transport systems to its AVL line card, along with FiberPlex design and support, gives Sales Force & Associates the technology needed to bypass many of the issues that come with getting large video and audio streams from place to place.

“The prices of copper solutions are going up and many of the fiber solutions are coming down in price.  Regardless of price, you just can’t do with copper what you can easily do with a FiberPlex fiber solution,” said Woolf.

“We’re experiencing demand for fiber optic products now more so than ever because of that cost factor, yes, but also because there’s just no other way to meet the delivery requirements of big data,” agreed Kyle Rosenbloom, Eastern Regional Client Relations Executive for FiberPlex.
“As demand for fiber increases, it’s companies like Sales Force & Associates that will ensure that it is installed and integrated with the systems and products needed to make it truly useful to our customer base of AV integrators,” added Rosenbloom.

FiberPlex has signed on almost 15 local reps in recent months in order to keep up with demand.
