Point Source Audio Debuts SERIES8 Miniature Microphones at INFOCOMM

Point Source Audio exhibits SERIES8, a high caliber collection of miniature microphones exceptionally resilient against boom breakage and moisture; and are easy to service with novel “X-Connectors.”

Point Source Audio SERIES8 Miniature Microphones

Point Source Audio’s new SERIES8 Robust Miniature Microphones are offered in headset, earworn and lavalier styles in both omnidirectional and cardioid patterns.

Petaluma, CA – Every user knows the inherent delicate nature of miniature earworn and headset microphones that achieve their transparency can be a double edged sword. Durability is hard to attain without compromising the product’s low-profile appearance but Point Source Audio (PSA), innovator of the original and one-of-a-kind “unbreakable boom” microphone, is meeting that challenge and more. The omnidirectional models of its new SERIES8 line will feature the prized 360° degree bendable boom combined with IP 57 waterproof protection against moisture, sweat and makeup—all while achieving a discreet profile and even a performance boost to 148dB max SPL. The long awaited Cardioid models round out the new offering for users looking for an “unbreakable boom” microphone capable of precise placement with a durable, yet low-profile. All SERIES8 mics feature user-friendly interchangeable “X-Connectors” for termination with popular brands of wireless transmitter packs including Sennheiser, Shure, Lectronsonics, Audio-Technica and more. The entire line of SERIES8 omnidirectional (CO-8) and cardioid (CR-8) headset, earworn and lavalier microphones will be shown for the first time at the Point Source Audio Booth 1426 during Infocomm 2013 in Orlando, Florida.

SERIES8 begins with a foundational performance criteria of 148dB max SPL and 135dB max SPL for its respective omnidirectional (CO-8) and cardioid (CR-8) offerings, each available in three different styles: headset, earworn and lavalier. The CO-8 omni mics are the only miniature mics on the market capable of reaching 148dB max SPL. They can capture all the nuances from spoken word to the extremely high vocals of singers. Combining this performance with the enduring bendable boom design that can be twisted into any position without worry of boom breakage—and a water/sweat proof protected element, the CO-8 omni line is the singular tool that can solve miking challenges big and small.

The CR-8 cardioid benefits are clear—this pickup pattern can eliminate nearly half of the environmental sounds around the microphone to focus more directly on the speaker or singer. Both the omni and cardioid mics come standard with easy-to-use low-cost “X-Connectors” which are replaceable connectors intended for fast on-site repair, or swapping to a new wireless termination with ease. The “X-Connectors” are attached with a short threaded cable connector so it carries none of the bulkiness or weight of other solutions, and stays securely in place. “Our SERIES8 mics are high value for customers that want a low-profile mic that has it all: unbeatable max SPL, a choice of two mic patterns in three styles, long-lasting boom durability, and moisture and makeup protection,” noted James Lamb, president of Point Source Audio. “It’s the best of all worlds.”

Availability and Price
The SERIES8 omnidirectional (CO-8) and cardioid (CR-8) headset and earworn mics are shipping July. The lavalier styles will ship in October.

Cathedral of Faith Church Relies on Hitachi for HD Production Upgrade

WOODBURY, New York – When San Jose-based Cathedral of Faith Church began its HD overhaul last year, they looked to systems integrator Spectaveris to select video production equipment that best met their needs. After carefully considering their camera choices, the Texas-based integrator found Hitachi Kokusai Electric America SK-HD1000 multi-format digital HDTV production cameras were ideal for their client. Five of the high-performance cameras were recently installed as part of the church’s two-phase project to upgrade to full HD broadcast capability.

“Choosing the right camera equipment was a lengthy process,” said Spectaveris president Dean Stone. “The church already had four lenses on existing standard definition cameras that were ‘HD Ready’ and capable of handling the tighter specifications of an HD camera. Because they wanted to continue using them once the church transitioned to HD, we had to find 2/3-inch format cameras that would work well with their lenses. After evaluating Hitachi’s cameras, along with other competitively priced cameras on the market, we were sold on the SK-HD1000’s superior HD image quality.”

Three of Hitachi’s production cameras are positioned in the back of the sanctuary with large LCD viewfinders, while the other two are used as handheld cameras in the front of the room. Each week, Cathedral of Faith records its Saturday service at the church’s San Jose location, and then transports the video on portable external hard drives to each of its seven remote locations around the San Francisco Bay area. The church also has live HD feeds to their outdoor pavilion every Sunday morning, broadcasts their services online, and offers DVDs of services to the congregation.

“Transitioning to HD has enabled us to better connect with our members,” explained Kurt Foreman, the executive pastor and director of operations at Cathedral of Faith. “Our church strives to give the congregation a memorable experience every week. High-quality video is an important part of this. The Hitachi cameras have helped enhance our services and engage our audience more than we could previously.”

Dean Stone added, “In upgrading the church to HD, our number one priority was to choose products that offer Cathedral of Faith great value. Installing Hitachi cameras provided them with the best products for their needs – while remaining within their budget.”

Bose® RoomMatch® Modules and Modeler® Sound System Software Make All the Difference for the Eden Baptist Church

Bose® RoomMatch® RM7020 and RM9040 array modules virtually eliminate the need for extensive acoustical treatment at the church’s new sanctuary building, saving time and money and creating a better, more cost-effective system than planned

Framingham, Massachusetts, May 23, 2013 – When the new sanctuary-auditorium for the Eden Baptist Church in Burnsville, Minnesota, was designed, it was assumed that this house of worship would require a sizable line array sound system and extensive acoustical treatment, to solve spoken-word intelligibility problems caused by the structure’s smooth concrete walls. A system was scheduled to be ordered, and the church was ready to install it and then await the application of acoustical treatments. However, John Vegter, Owner of AV integrator Quality Systems, was called on to commission the new sound system prior to its installation, and he hesitated, sensing an acoustical quagmire or, as he put it, “A bear of a job!” Instead, Vegter recommended the church use RoomMatch® loudspeakers from Bose® Professional Systems Division. Quality Systems specified a pair each of RM7020 and RM9040 array modules, precisely placed based on what was determined by the Bose Modeler sound system software. When they were done, the room’s sound, which could have proven difficult, turned out to be just what the church needed.

“When they first contacted me, it was within a week of the other line array system being scheduled to go in,” recalls Vegter, who runs Quality Systems with his wife and Co-Owner Cheryl Vegter. “I looked at the site and the plans and said this is going to be a bear of a job, keeping the reflections from a 120-degree horizontal-dispersion line array off the walls, and it was going to need a lot of acoustical treatment to make it work.” Vegter had worked with products from Bose Professional Systems before, including the Panaray® MA12 and 502® A mid/high-frequency loudspeakers. In collaboration with Bose engineers, he researched the RoomMatch series of array modules that Bose had introduced last year. “When Phil Nelson (the Senior Bose Engineer) and I went on-site for the commissioning, I looked at the walls of the finished space, and I said there was no way we could do this without a lot of acoustical treatment, but the Bose engineer just said, ‘Trust me.’ I did, and it turned out amazing.”

Vegter says it took only a few parametric equalization tweaks to get the RoomMatch system to do exactly what its name promises to do: sonically match the interior of the church perfectly. “The Modeler software gave us the precise location, position, inclination and angles for each speaker, and once they were installed and tuned, the room sounded fantastic.” And, he adds, to this day it still has not needed any acoustical treatment.

The Bose RoomMatch array modules enabled the project to stay on schedule even with the last-minute change in plans, and save the client money that would have been spent on extensive acoustical treatments. “It worked out so well that I brought the pastor of the Liberty Baptist Church in Eden Prairie into listen and he ultimately decided on the RoomMatch array for their church,” says Vegter, who then installed RM5510, RM7010, and RM9020 modules in a single array at Liberty Baptist of Eden Prairie, as well. “RoomMatch is a great match.”

Bose RoomMatch array modules deliver superb audio quality for fixed-installations in almost any room size, shape, acoustic requirement or budget. Overcoming the acoustic limitations of both line array and point-source conventional designs, RoomMatch modules form a new class of curvilinear array that allows seamless audio quality, with consistent front-to-back and side-to-side tonal balance.

The Bose Modeler sound system software is an acoustic design and analysis program for sound system designers or acoustical consultants. Using a computer-based 3D model of the acoustic space and advanced acoustic ray tracing algorithms, Modeler can predict a sound system’s performance. The first sound system software to offer full STI prediction, Modeler software has been a leader in sound system performance prediction for more than 25 years.

ABU ROAD RAJASTHAN, India – Brahma Kumaris, World Renewal Spiritual Trust has recently constructed Godlywood Studios in its Shantivan Complex at its International Headquarters at Abu Road, Rajasthan. This highly advanced electronic media studio creates television programs and films dedicated to spreading spiritual knowledge and Raja Yoga meditation. This ambitious studio project is intended to create and air various spiritually oriented TV programs and films was conceived and initiated by BK. Ramesh Shah, Managing Trustee of the Brahma Kumari Organization. To help achieve this vision, Godlywood Studios has installed a HARMAN Studer Vista 1 mixing console to serve at the heart of its audio system.

The Brahma Kumaris, World Renewal Spiritual Trust organization is spread over 138 countries with 8,500 centres. Following BK. Ramesh Shah’s vision to create a world-class studio with all functional infrastructure facilities under one roof, the implementation of this project was handed over to Shri. Haridas Bhanushali (BK Harilal). Under the leadership and guidance of BK Harilal, the team executed this project in a short span of one year.

Determined to create a modern facility with world-class tools and equipment, Godlywood studios enlisted a technical committee comprised of BK Shiva, Shashi Mekal and Gerard Goveia of Broadcast Media Equipments Pvt Ltd (BMEPL) along with Ashish Barje, Sales Manager, Recording & Broadcast, HARMAN Professional India. The team selected HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 mixing console to serve at the heart of the studio, marking the first installation of a Studer Vista 1 in India.

“The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization [BKWSO] chose the Studer Vista 1 as the perfect fit for Godlywood studios because the primary requirement was that of a compact solution without compromise on system performance, DSP capability or reliability. The Studer Vista 1 enables us to have the control surface, I/O system, DSP and power supplies all contained within one very small footprint console,” said Shashi Mekal, Technical Head, Godlywood Studios.

The BKWSO was also impressed with the Vista 1 for its user-friendly, easy-to-learn interface and unique functionality with its Vistonics™ user interface and 40 on-screen rotary knobs. Using Studer’s unique Virtual Surround Panning, the operator can take mono sources and create a realistic sound field for a film quickly and easily.

Commenting on a successful installation, Gerard Goveia, Director, TASS Services, Mumbai, said, “The Studer Vista 1 perfectly fit the bill given the specifications by BKWSO, as well as the budget for the studio’s setup. The Vista 1 sits at the heart of the studio, providing complete control and ease of operation to the technical users.”

Elaborating on HARMAN’s legendary expertise in broadcast solutions across the world, David McKinney, Senior Director, India Operations, HARMAN Professional said, “The Studer Vista 1 has proven to be the ideal console for this prestigious installation at Godlywood Studios. The internal 5.1-to-stereo down mix function allows for simultaneous live productions in both formats; this saves a lot of time for the engineers having to redo the mix. Being a successful installation of Studer Vista 1 in India, we are extremely proud of the installation and the team involved has done a commendable job in the project.”

Free Hearing Screenings Offered at InfoComm

As part of its commitment to advocacy for hearing loss and hearing loss prevention Listen Technologies will sponsor the House Research Institute’s free hearing screenings at InfoComm.

Bluffdale, Utah, USA — The House Research Institute and Listen Technologies are teaming up to provide free hearing screenings to attendees and exhibitors at the 2013 InfoComm Exposition at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

The free hearing screenings will be available in the Audio Pavilion, Hall A, Booth #A381 during show hours from Wednesday, June 12 through Friday, June 14, and will be open 30 minutes before the show for the convenience of exhibitors. A certified health technician will conduct the screenings based on regulatory guidelines established by OSHA, and House Research Institute personnel will provide hearing health education, tips and other resources.

The screenings are offered through the House Research Institute’s Sound Partners® hearing loss prevention program with exclusive sponsorship from Listen Technologies, as part of the company’s commitment to advocacy for hearing loss and hearing loss prevention.

Sound Partners raises awareness among audio and music professionals and the listening public about the permanent hearing health risks associated with excessive exposure to sound volumes at or exceeding 85 decibels (dB), and practical protection methods to encourage the lifelong enjoyment of sound.

“We are passionate about our ongoing commitment to build awareness about hearing loss and hearing loss prevention—and as such, we jumped at the opportunity to once again sponsor the House Research Institute to provide free hearing screenings for attendees at this year’s InfoComm,” said Russell Gentner, President of Listen Technologies Corporation. “The number of people with some degree of hearing loss is staggering. In the US alone, 17 percent or 36 million Americans have hearing loss and this number is rising. We are doing our part to bring a voice to those who deserve the opportunity to fully engage in experiences in a work environment, at their houses of worship, , at the theater, at the movies, and in seminars. Hearing loss can be isolating and we want people to know they don’t have to withdraw or settle for poor sound experiences. The free screening gives people in our industry a chance to understand where they are with their hearing and what they can do to protect it from noise-induced hearing loss.”

“Listen Technologies is a strong advocate for legislative compliance for assistive listening, hearing loss awareness and prevention,” said Marilee Potthoff, Director, Community Education & Outreach, House Research Institute. “Through their sponsorship, we are able to offer professional hearing screening services and the Institute’s extensive hearing health and science expertise to thousands of industry professionals whose careers depend on hearing well.”
